Lefter: O professor

From the very first scene, this film completely captivated me. Every element - the actors, the real story, the atmosphere, the cinematography - worked together so perfectly that I found myself in a state of pure transposition. It wasn't just watching a movie; it felt like crossing into another time Zone.

Lefter is a biopic about the football legend Lefter Küçükandonyadis. As a forward player in his real life, he scored 388 goals for teams like Fenerbahçe, Fiorentina, Nice, AEK Athens, and Boluspor, along with 52 international goals for Turkey. In his managerial career, he managed teams in Turkey, Greece, and South Africa. However, the movie overlooks much of his remarkable football career and tells a weak story of Lefter becoming a professional football player, and much of the film focuses on a strange love story. The film does not discuss his managerial career after his retirement either. The acting is terrible as well. The only good parts of the movie are about Lefter's childhood and the discussion of the 6-7 September 1955 incident, which vividly depicts the Büyükada scene.

As a Fenerbahçe fan, I was genuinely excited for this film - but the screenplay left me absolutely stunned, and not in a good way. The film is fragmented, difficult to follow, and ultimately quite dull. My expectation from a biographical film is to see the defining moments of the subject's life, the events that shaped their country or the world around them. Of course, their personal life is a part of that, but I cannot understand why a character who holds no historical significance received more screen time than the 1954 World Cup itself.

Sadly, Lefter's private life - much of which is clearly a projection of the screenwriter's imagination - overshadows everything else. Turkey has only participated in the World Cup twice in its entire history, and the first appearance, led by Lefter's generation, could have been a powerful opportunity to highlight national pride and to transition naturally into the 6-7 September events. Yet instead of exploring the life of a significant Greek figure who became an important part of Turkish sports history, we spent 45 minutes watching a love triangle.

It's baffling that the writers chose this direction, especially considering the director's previous historical works, which demonstrated a strong ability to portray meaningful narratives. Here, the script is beyond disappointing - it's a complete misfire that glosses over major events which should have been central to the film. With such wasted potential, one wonders if the filmmakers would have been better off marketing this as a romantic drama titled "A Football Story" rather than calling it Lefter's biography.

In the end, the strong cast, decent performances, and respectable production quality keep the film barely watchable. But the writing is a disaster, and the lack of focus on Lefter's true legacy makes it a deeply frustrating experience.

I recently watched the new biopic about Lefter, and unfortunately it falls far short of its potential. The film shows very little respect for historical accuracy, skipping or distorting key events that shaped Lefter's extraordinary life. Even more puzzling, both the teenage (14-15) and the adult version of Lefter are played by the same actor - without any noticeable age-appropriate makeup, de-aging, or visual effects. It's distracting and breaks immersion from the very beginning.

The narrative itself is fragmented and poorly structured. Instead of exploring the fascinating contradictions and challenges of Lefter's journey - especially as a Rum-origin Turkish citizen navigating a complex socio-political era - the film strings together disconnected scenes with no real emotional buildup.

Acting performances are unfortunately flat, and even the supposedly dramatic moments feel dull and uninspired. There is no atmosphere, no tension, and no sense of entering Lefter's world. Considering how rich, layered, and compelling his story actually is, this movie is a huge missed opportunity.

A disappointing tribute to a legendary figure.
