Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, has seen several demonstrations this week against lawmakers, with protests now escalating across the country after the death of a ride-sharing driver who was hit by a police vehicle on Thursday night.
Indonesia’s top filmmakers, producers and actors have expressed their anger over the rider’s death and wider injustice on social media, as protests engulf several Indonesian cities, including Jakarta and Surabaya.
Tear gas and water cannons are also being fired at crowds, according to local reports.
“I want the world to know the situation in Indonesia, how corrupt the system is, and how doomed the people are,” said actor Omara N. Esteghlal, who starred in Joko Anwar’s The Siege At Thorn High, on his social media. “Our house of representatives (Dpr) are not only insensitive, they are disgustingly corrupt. Their wages keep on increasing using taxpayers’ money, and what do the people get in return?...

Joko Anwar’s The Siege at Thorn High imagines a Jakarta just a few years from now, in 2027, but the air is thick with old hatred. This is a city haunted by the ghosts of past racial riots, a place where societal wounds have been left to fester. We enter this world through Edwin, a man who takes a job as a substitute teacher at a notorious high school.
Thorn High itself is less an educational institution and more a high-security holding pen for the city’s most troubled youth. Edwin walks these oppressive halls with a quiet, personal mission driving him. Before he can find what he is looking for, the city’s simmering tensions boil over. A new wave of ethnic violence erupts, the school goes into lockdown, and the simmering conflicts inside its walls are trapped with nowhere to go.

Inspired by the 1998 Indonesian Riots, Prime Video’s The Siege at Thorn High explores how racial discrimination can spiral into chaos and anarchy, and how riots fueled by ethnic divides rarely follow any sense of order. History has shown us repeatedly that when one group turns on another, the results are never good. From the Partition riots in India in 1947 to the Los Angeles riots of 1992 or the Rwandan genocide of 1994, the world has witnessed how prejudice and unchecked hatred can erupt into destruction. And yet, as this film reminds us, we never learn. I’ve rarely found myself believing that the horror unfolding on screen is real, but The Siege at Thorn High feels so raw and personal that it blurs the line between fiction and reality. The film’s realism pulls you straight into the action, and for once, I found myself genuinely invested in the survival of its characters.

The Siege at Thorn High is a tense, unflinching Indonesian action-thriller set against the charged backdrop of Jakarta during the racial riots of 1998—an era marked by brutal violence against Chinese Indonesians. Drawing from these real events, the film follows Edwin, a Chinese Indonesian man still haunted by the loss of his sister, Silvi, and driven by his search for her missing son. His path leads him to a high school infamous for its unruly students, where he takes up work as a substitute teacher.
Inside Thorn High, Edwin walks a razor’s edge—every corridor and classroom thick with hostility, every glance a reminder of simmering prejudice. Among his fiercest adversaries is Jefri, the school’s defiant student leader, whose contempt for Chinese Indonesians runs deep. When a fresh wave of riots explodes across the city, Edwin, Jefri, a handful of students, and Jefri’s gang of loyal troublemakers...
