Lucy Punch in Amandaland (2025)

Solid comedy. A rarity.

On first three episodes it is pretty solid stuff. Fans of Motherland may be a little disappointed as it's not quite as well rounded as that but stands on its own two feet.

Nothing brand new, and some of the gags are telegraphed a little too obviously but still many memorable one liners in each episode.

All the main cast fit their characters very well. Lucy Punch is good, very believable.

Reminded me a bit of I'm Alan Partridge S2 when he's living in the portacabin and struggling to get back on his feet. Cringe humour but not overdone.

Cannot believe there really is a KBK kitchen shop in Leytonstone...

A decent BBC sitcom.

Not as good as Motherland

In short:

It's hard to root for Amanda, She needed a redeeming moment straight away so we could champion her, so unfortunately she's still the horrible person we saw in motherland.

Motherland is better, but I wouldn't be against watching a 2nd series.

I wrote quite a detailed, slightly negative review of this originally that took a lot of time and effort and for some reason it was deleted, hmmmm..

So that's why I gave the quick review up top.

And for the synopsis:

Recently divorced Amanda must navigate parenting teenagers in new surroundings after downsizing and moving to South Harlesden in London...

A rare Successful Spin-Off

Too many people are expecting it to feel the same which in many ways, it does. It's got the same humour and little glimpses of Amanda's old life crack through.

I think it definitely needs to be long term as it was really funny.

However, the kids need some good acting classes because some of it was abysmal at times..

Episode One is really the only one I would miss on a re watch as the actors begin to find their feet. It's got a good story but it isn't as funny as the rest of the series.

Lucy Punch is brilliant in the role and it's nice to see her back on our screens. We just need a few cameos in the future from Liz and Julia. And maybe Kevin but he's a bit annoying...

ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS SPIN-OFF

This spin-off series is absolutely what we've been waiting for! It's hilarious, witty and entertaining, laugh out loud in pretty much every single scene and situation! I adore Amanda in this! I find her relatable, and embracing! She's so funny and comical! I love the new character too! So interesting and dimensional! I will be rewatching this again and again just like I have done with Motherland! Amanda is even more funny and hilarious in this spin-off! She's always been one of my favourites in the original show and in so happy they made this much needed show! It's really brightened my gloomy February and brought some much loved joy and warmth to it! Thank you!

Funny but not hilarious

I have not watched Motherland but I will now as I did enjoy this spin off.

I watched it because of trailers on the BBC and because Joanna Lumley is in it. Lumley can be credited with at least 4 of the stars in my rating of Amandaland. Her character is not too far removed from Patsy Stone so of course she is brilliant.

For the rest, even though I found parts of the first couple of episodes cringeworthy I did binge watch the series to see if it got any better. Either it did, or, I warmed to the characters and the style of comedy. The comedy is often delivered subtly and dry as it is in real life. When it is slapstick that's when it becomes cringeworthy. The Irish ladies Anne and Della are given the best comedic lines. I was wondering why there were 2 Irish characters featuring prominently in a London-based comedy, reading other reviews it seems this may be the legacy of Motherland. Anyways they are 2 funny ladies. As for Amanda herself, I wonder if her character is based on a real life Amanda we all know?

Brilliant

I was wondering if this would be as good as Motherland and it absolutely was. I binge watched all 6 episodes in a day and loved it. All characters were great and it was fab having Amanda being Amanda.

There's a lot more of Joanna Lumley which is good to see. Both Amanda and Felicity really grow on you in this spin off. I really hope there is another series to come and it would be nice to see some of the other Motherland characters turn up in the future. Ann is her usually funny self and Della, Fi and Mail are a great addition.

I can't believe it's had negative reviews I loved it and would definitely recommend.

Excellent comedy show, great characters, very funny

Must get Series 2 immediately!!

Brilliantly acted, just love Joanna Lumley but all the supporting cast are so good.

The writing is very good, the teenage characters are expertly written.

Anne is acted so well, I long for her to get her own show too.

Lucy Punch is just brilliant as Amanda, she is always trying to do the right thing by her children, whilst being totally fake . It's an excellent dichotomy of her personality.

The storyline are engaging and fairly true yo family life motherland was also excellent so I'd re commend you watch that too. I was hoping they would do another series. This could be even better. Thanks.

Its good if you are into British comedies

To be honest I thought I was going to dislike this and I kept looking for faults with it but after giving it a change I actually really enjoyed it.

Was disappointed that there wasn't much of the cast from Motherland in it but it was still good. A little cheesy and sometimes dry but definitely worth a watch. If you liked Motherland you'll definitely like this.

Lucy Punch (Amanda) is such a brilliant actress though. She just gives Amanda a spark that I bet not many could capture. I could probably watch a whole show with just her in and still not get bored by it.

All in all, I enjoyed it and would watch season 2. I do wish that season 1 was a little longer as well, but that being said though the show didn't feel rush and that can happen with mini series.

Don't believe the draggers

Most of the poor reviews are from people who barely watched the first episode. Seems they were determined not to like it from the start. It's utterly brilliant. Amanda isn't likeable, that's the point, but she shows a few sparse moments of vulnerability, of needing to be loved, of shedding the aspirational veneer. People are missing the point! Lucy Punch is brilliant, as is Philippa Dunne. I split my sides as Anne recognises Amanda outside the school. Her reaction? Priceless and so funny. The new cast had a lot to live up to but they do so splendidly. Mal is a perfect foil to Amanda; I'm sure we will see more of the two of them if there is another series. Yes, I miss Kevin, who wouldn't, but these bite-sized, half hour episodes are perfect for a post-work pick me up. Whoever can't find this series hilarious or at least funny needs a personality reset. Don't believe their humbug and watch it all - right to the end! LOVED IT!

Absolutely fabulous!

Just watch it - if you're English/and or live in London and have witnessed the 'yummy mummy' tribe being passive aggressive at school collection time will know just how painfully accurate this show is Lucy Punch is awesome and the attention to detail in each storyline is wonderful, and perfectly encapsulates the general strain of living in London, raising children and trying to be a trend setter... Motherland felt like it slightly ran out of steam whereas this feels like as long as Amanda's ego keeps running wild then there's plenty of material left to explore. It's also a joy to see Anne going even more extreme - again another great performance...,

Brilliant. Need a Series 2!

The first episode made me wonder if it was going to be too cringe as we'd had Amanda in smaller doses in Motherland but it picked up quickly in Episode 2. Can't believe Amanda was near endearing in this lol All the characters/actors without exception (yes including the kids, the stepdad) are brilliant and funny and really fit together. But can I just say how FUNNY the character Anne is?! Totally laughed out loud in all her scenes, without giving away too much, the homework scenes, the R Kelly and "Johannes" jokes were chefs kiss. Whoever is writing this well done. In a sea of absolutely awful stuff being churned out these days, this was good clean pure good comedy. Shows you don't have to have swearing, nudity, pc messaging to be funny which is the only requirement for comedy sitcoms.

And a big bow down to Joanna Lumley. Blooming brilliant woman.

It Was Simply Brilliant Comedy

Amandaland

This was quite a spin-off, who would have believed it. It was perfect from start to finish.

We had a script that had me laughing out loud every 30 seconds. Some great characters and the cherry on top Joanna Lumley.

I loved it and I think there is great potential for a second and third series, take Amanda on holiday to Spain, put her in amateur dramatics, make her do volunteering after a brush with the law, make her a school governor, there is some future comedy gold here.

One thing I particularly liked with all the up-to-date modern references that this sitcom sent up from start to finish. But really the stand out excellence of this show was the brilliant ensemble acting an amazing comic timing.

I am going to give this a firm 10 out of 10. I will watch it again and again.

Brilliant spin-off!

It's rare for a spin-off to live up to its predecessor, but this one certainly does.

Maybe it's because Amanda, Anne, and Felicity are all such strong characters played by such brilliant actors.

The rest of the main cast are also superb. It's hard to dislike any of them.

I really hope this series runs for as long as Motherland, even longer perhaps.

I would really love to see more of Felicity and Fi together.

Siobhan McSweeney is brilliant as Della, she really knows how to pull off those one-liners.

It would also be nice to get a little mention about some of the Motherland cast, perhaps even a cameo or two.

SLOW THEN GREAT!

This started off quite slow then found it's rhythm ... it's probably better to try and not compare this to the truly Amazing Motherland ... I did actually LOL and Sniggered quite a lot ... Johannes was an odd character ... I kept waiting for him to come out as some type of Scammer ... The Anne Character held firm and was a Strong part of the Episodes ... I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed Amandaland This started off quite slow then found it's rhythm ... it's probably better to try and not compare this to the truly Amazing Motherland ... AmandaBLAND

As a huge fan of Motherland, Lucy Punch, and Joanna Lumley, as well as having read all the glowing reviews of this series, I went in with extremely high hopes. Unfortunately, those hopes were completely dashed by a rather dull and unfunny first episode. Given the talent involved, however, I was sure things would improve in episode two. Sadly, that episode was just as laugh free and I decided it wasn't worth any more of my time.

I would truly like to know what those who've praised this show found amusing as I found it to be entirely laugh free. After two episodes, I think I only cracked a smile once. And barely at that.

Brilliant acting

So I adored Motherland and wished there had been more, ended up loving Amanda so this is great.

I thought the first episode was a bit cringy but carried on watching and now I don't want it to end. Love all the characters, especially Anne but all the newbies too.

What a great cast especially Lucy Punch and Joanna Lumley, they look so alike they could be daughter and mother.

I think the music acts as a character in itself, reflecting the silliness of the show.

I think at the heart of the show is that despite all her faults Amanda is actually a good person with a good heart. There's never any malice in what she does even if it is cringy at times lol. Lucy Punch is a great comic talent.

I can't wait for the next series.

Even better than Motherland

This programme is absolutely hilarious.

It has a slightly different vibe to it because it centres on Amanda, although we also see the return of Anne and Amanda's Mum.

It's great to see more of Joanna Lumley in this season as she is so believable as Amanda's mother.

Honestly I found there were more laugh out loud moments in this than in Motherland, usually due to Amanda getting herself into the most ridiculous situations because she can't accept her new lower station in life.

There are some really fun new characters and for the most part they are actually really likeable and endearing.

I'd definitely recommend this if you want a light hearted laugh.

Even better than Motherland

Finishing Motherland, I was really eager to see what Amandaland was like, but I didn't hold high hopes. Well, I was wrong. Like many have said, it starts off a bit slow, but it really gets going and is somehow better than the already great Motherland. I love Amanda, and I love Joanna Lumley. The humor is sharper, the characters richer, and the chaos even more delightful. It's a brilliant spin-off that stands tall on its own, blending wit and heart effortlessly. Highly recommend! Lumley's impeccable timing and Amanda's charm make it a joy to watch every episode. Pure comedic gold! A real must-see!

Amandaland Is My New Obsession - A Whimsical Masterpiece 💖

I am completely in love with Amandaland! This show is like stepping into a dream where reality bends, charm overflows, and every episode feels like a warm hug mixed with a dash of madness. From the quirky characters to the stunning visual aesthetic, it's impossible not to get swept up in the magic.

Amanda herself is a force of nature - hilarious, heartfelt, and unapologetically herself. The writing is sharp and original, the themes are surprisingly deep beneath all the whimsy, and the show manages to be both laugh-out-loud funny and emotionally resonant.

It's rare to find something so uniquely itself in a sea of formulaic TV. Amandaland dares to be different - and I adore it for that. I honestly can't stop watching, rewatching, quoting lines, and telling everyone I know that they need this show in their lives.

If you haven't entered Amandaland yet, what are you waiting for? Go get lost in it - you might just find a new favorite part of yourself in the process.

Awful

The forced comedy just doesn't work. The main character is too weak to carry the notion of Amandaland. I tried to stick with it but it was a struggle.

During Motherland, there wasn't one episode where I didn't laugh out loud but this? In the first 3 episodes, I didn't laugh once.

It is a pity as the idea of it is good. The actors involved are individually excellent but for some reason, this does not gel well.

There's alot to be said for tv shows that do not require any brain cells to burn while watching it....many of us need that type of entertainment at the end of a long day but when those sort of tv shows try your patience and challenge you to stay with it, then , it's time to throw in the towel.

I'm giving up on it!

Loved it and I didn't expect to!

Loved Motherland and have watched each episode multiple times. I really didn't look forward to this spin off. I watched the first episode and sat there being super sceptical. However it reeled me in. I'd say I'm pretty fussy when it comes to comedy. Love Amanda and Anne and all the new characters grew on me. I love comedy with a bit of heart and this was fab. Joanna lumley is an icon so she brings joy and class to everything she appears in.

I truly hope there will be a second series and I can't wait to see what happens next with all the new gang! Lucy Punch is a class act in the lead and everyone plays their part well. Fingers crossed for a second series!!!!!
