BFI Distribution has released the gripping first trailer for ‘Islands,’ the tense new psychological thriller from acclaimed German filmmaker Jan-Ole Gerster.

Following its acclaimed world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, the film will have its UK premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival before arriving in UK and Irish cinemas on 12 September 2025, with a BFI Player release on 27 October 2025.

The Little Mermaidis being adapted once again, and this time, it's not by Disney. Anime studio Kinema Citrus has released its trailer for Goodbye, Lara, an upcoming series that reimagines the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Little Mermaid, set in modern-day Japan. The project was first announced in 2024, and is scheduled for release in 2026.

The trailer features familiar scenes recognizable in any adaptation of The Little Mermaid. A mermaid named Lara saves someone in the ocean and takes them back to shore. Additionally, the trailer showcases the mermaid's origins and what she was like when she was younger, offering glimpses of the human world and the deal she's about to make with the sea witch.

Time to take another trip out to an island to escape from the world as we know it. One of my favorite films of the 2025 Berlin Film Festival is this fantastic indie creation called Islands, the latest feature film made by German filmmaker Jan-Ole Gerster. I'm already a big fan of Gerster - his first two feature films A Coffee in Berlin (aka Oh Boy - from 2012) and Lara (from 2019) are two of my favorites as well (and I recommend catching up with both since most people haven't seen them). He's a remarkably talented, crafty filmmaker who comes around every few years with an absolute banger new film that somehow remains under the radar despite getting rave reviews.
