A Decent Start, But a Disastrous Finish !

As a romantic comedy that tries to strike a balance between humor and romance but falls short in execution. While some comedy scenes land well, many fail to create an impact.

The biggest positive of the film is Sajin Gopu's performance, which stands out as commendable. He brings charm and energy to his role, but unfortunately, the script doesn't give him much to work with. The supporting cast delivers decent performances, but none leave a lasting impression.

The music and background score add a pleasant touch to the film, and while the songs are good, they don't have the recall value to make them memorable.

The film starts off on a promising note, keeping the audience engaged in the first half. However, as it approaches the climax, the storytelling takes a nosedive. The writing becomes weak, and the final sequences are chaotic and confusing. The climax, in particular, feels rushed and directionless, making it evident that the makers struggled to wrap up the story convincingly.

In the end, Painlili 2025 feels like a missed opportunity. It's not entirely unwatchable, but it certainly doesn't justify a theatrical experience. This one is better suited for OTT streaming, and even then, only if you have time to kill.

Starts well, but ends on a tame note. [+50%]

Painkili attempts to be a thoroughbred rom-com, and while the comedy here is quirky, at times situational, and mostly over-the-top, the romance aspect is not established well in any sense. That is primarily due to Anaswara's character not having any semblance of an arc to speak of, which is justified by her age (where mistakes seem apparent). Yes, there are some Jithu Madhavan-certified laughs, and Justin Varghese scores the film superbly; however, the film lacks a decent flow from event to event, overall.

Sajin Gopu gets to showcase more of his acting palette compared to his previous films, but since I watched Ponman way before this, I think his performance in that film (even with limited dialogues) was a lot more impactful. Here, he's asked to go all out-crying, laughing, being unhinged-and of course, bring some adorable romantic shades. He isn't successful at all of it, but if anyone (especially, the old-school directors) hasn't taken sufficient note of the guy yet, this will wholly ensure it. Anaswara is undoubtedly a wonderful actor, but this role will likely go down as one of her least memorable ones. The scenes with Riyaz Khan and LJP, intended to be comedic, didn't work for me.

P. S. Jayaram's hysterical scene from Kaavadiyaattam was poorly re-created.

Painkili - A good spoof entertainer with some cringe moments

Painkili

Rating - 3.25/5

A simple fun to watch entertainer with overboard performances and absurd situations.

The plot of the story revolves around a hapless guy whose life turns topsy turvy when an eccentric girl comes uninvited to his life and the humourous events that unfolds forms the story.

Jithu Madhavan has penned a humorous story but the flaws in the script is evident wherein the movie loses its momentum in few situations but gets back with good performances. Sreejith has executed the story exceptionally well through spoof humour moments and dialogues inspired from few movies. The story gets interesting towards the second half but few climax portions felt too overdramatic filled with cringe moments.

Impressive performance by Sajin Gopu who has proved his potential to shoulder any roles. Good performance by Anaswara with her eccentric character but the character arc designed for her felt immature and incomplete. Impressive performances by Abu Salim through his witty dialogues and mannerisms,Jisma Vimal,Roshan Shanavas & Chandu Salim Kumar.

Justin Varghese has done an exceptional work through his Music and BGM's blending with the quirky situations.

A decent entertainer by Sreejith and Jithu Madhavan with a bizarre story narrative style.

PAIN kili...Watch at your own risk

Watched Painkili...Mal Movie yesterday... PAINkili was really PAINFUL to tolerate in Imax Absolute waste of time and money... I wonder whether there is a deal between reviewers and film field...some online reviewers have given average and above average opinions....

Anaswara was like enthino thilakkunna sambar...may be to attract family audience Usual villans in comedy roles Abu Salim and Riaz Khan...different attempt Sajin Gopu and the second female lead were decent in their roles...

BGM was good most of the places but loud

Overall a below average experience

Better tile is CHALI or VALIPPU than PAINkili

3 star out of 10 for few scattered comedies and the effort by a few new casts

WATCH IN THEATRES AT YOUR RISK..

Above average

An over the top comedy that tries to be a little bit like the successful Malayalam comedies from the 90s but also doesn't really want it to be called like that. There were a lot of moments that really made me laugh out loud. Any time movies make a lot of movie references it makes me giddy and even though this only uses it in like some specific scenes, those were all great. There was quite a lot of stuff that felt really forced and thus lost the humor in it. But just in the comedy aspect, it had so much in it that, even though the stuff that didn't work was a lot, there was more stuff that worked for me.

However, the issue with this film is the story itself. There are so many plot points in this movie that are too stupid, and the characters are given a pass after questionable actions. This kind of stuff was very common among the unsuccessful Malayalam comedies of the 90s too. This plot could have worked more if they hadn't wanted to add some thematic elements and thus a heart to it, it should have been ridiculous throughout, just the way it started. Jithu Madhavan's writing intentions feel like he wanted to make it a bit emotional at the end which is still hilarious like he did in Aavesham. In Aavesham, it was all focused on one character but here, there are two main characters involved and the writing fails to make it sensible. The second act which was supposed to build a base for the climax didn't really work much and the ending was really a confused mess. Performances from Sajin Gopu, Anaswara, and Jisma really carried a lot of scenes that would have totally failed if the acting wasn't as solid.

But even with all those issues, it was still hilarious for the most part. Overall, an above-average experience for me.

Poor pynkili

Really hard to watch the film in one stretch....take a few minutes to relax from the boring situations in the film...very poor screen play...is jithu Madhavan gave pani to the director with his very poor screenplay...really need some guts to make such a film spending crores....watched the film in Ott and not in theatre...now felt proud of it...is anyone who acted or worked in the film should show the courage to tell fahad that this would be a utter flop in theatre...that is the problem of Malayalam cinema...people start to make film without any story or screenplay..even the experienced people are not giving enough importance to the script.

Good satirical comedy

This type of humor is not for everybody. But those who like dumb funny with a measure of intelligence in it will find this movie worth the watch. If you're a fan of comedians like Conan O'Brien and that similar style of sketch comedy this is right up your alley. All the characters were well developed and there is some really good world building in it as well. Hope they keep on making moving like this!

WHY? WHY? WHY?

Painkili is a mindless film that ends up frustrating the audience rather than entertaining them. It's hard to believe this was penned by Jithu Madhavan. Though it attempts to present itself as an experimental piece, it falters due to poorly developed characters and weak writing. The female lead, in particular, suffers from shallow characterisation driven by uninspired scripting.

While a few slapstick moments land well, they aren't enough to salvage a film that's steadily falling apart. Justin Varghese's background score works in parts but is often overly loud, and the songs feel repetitive and dull.

Abu Salim does a decent job in his comic role, whereas Riyaz Khan's comedy comes off as forced. Sajin Gopu puts in an acceptable performance, though his character lacks proper development.

By the end, you're left wondering-why was this even made?

Not recommended. Watch it only if you have time to waste-and even then, proceed with caution.

Name is apt

Painkili: directed by Sreejith Babu and released in 2025, other than the acting by Sajin Gopu there is nothing to watch in this movie. Weakest plot ever, comedy that hardly makes one laugh. Almost like utter nonsense. The name is apt for the movie. A girl with desires to do higher studies keeps jumping away from her house when they decide on her marriage. Turns out the parents are not her real parents, so she feels orphaned as well. In the process gets into the life of Sajin Gopu who initially wants to get rid of her, then falls for her. But she's focused on studies and was buying time till she's 18 to get out of the house and do it.

Just not worth watching.

Absolutely Hilarious!

I haven't laughed soo much for any movie in recent times. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone for a light hearted comedy watch. The acting, cast, comedy was spot on and absolutely brilliant. I have never gone to the theatre twice for any movie, I'm soo tempted to go again. Loved the movie from start to finish. The only sad bit was that I kept missing out on some dialogues because I was laughing. What an entertaining movie!!! It just exceeded my expectations. This movie is still simply witty with a story line that is far different from the main stream movies that come out today. Must Watch!!!

Best Comedy Entertainer in a while

If you like watching comedy movies this is one of the best for a long while in Malayalam movies. Lucky that we gave it a go. Don't trust the negative reviews here.

The story line was good. BGM was good too. It's a great entertainer .

Story is by the same guy who wrote Romanian and Avesham.

The acting of all of them are good, especially the girl who likes the hero from the start. And the one supportive friend of hero.

The usual Villan who acted as hero's dad was funny.

Heros acting towards the end was too good. Pretty sure he ll be a major stay in malayalam movies. He is soo versatile can handle comedy and serious roles.

An amazing comedy family entertainer!

Painkili (2025) truly shines as a delightful family entertainer, weaving together heartfelt emotions, humor, and a touch of melodrama into a thoroughly enjoyable cinematic experience. The direction exhibits a clear vision, resulting in a film that effectively blends charm, comedy, and genuine sincerity. While it occasionally embraces a touch of lighthearted cheesiness, this only enhances the overall warmth and appeal of the narrative. This is undoubtedly a super family entertainer where the impeccable comic timing, evocative background score, well-chosen casting, and commendable performances all coalesce to contribute to its success.

**Story and Direction**

At its core, Painkili explores the intricate tapestry of family bonds, the everyday ebb and flow of life, and the resilience required to navigate both personal and shared challenges. The story beautifully centers on the lives of relatable, ordinary characters grappling with familiar struggles, yet it is narrated with such authentic warmth and genuine humor that the audience readily forges a connection with them. **Sreejith Babu's** direction demonstrates a confident hand, skillfully interweaving moments of levity with more profound themes without creating a sense of discord.

While there are instances where the film might lean towards sentimentality or a touch of the cheesy, this ultimately contributes to its endearing and lighthearted nature. It's evident that the film aims to elicit an emotional response from its viewers, and it largely succeeds, particularly through its well-placed comedic sequences and tender moments. **Jithu Madhavan's** writing ensures a narrative that is both engaging and emotionally resonant.

**Cast and Performances**

The film's strength is significantly bolstered by its exceptionally talented lead cast. **Stars Sajin Gopu and Anaswara Rajan**, in their central roles, deliver performances that are nothing short of outstanding, elevating the entire film. Anaswara, already recognized for her compelling screen presence, imbues her character with both grace and a delightful wit. She serves as the emotional anchor of the film, her portrayal resonating with sincerity and keeping the audience invested throughout her character's journey.

Sajin Gopu provides the perfect complement to Anaswara, embodying a character that demands a skillful blend of humor, charm, and underlying depth. Their on-screen chemistry is undeniable, and together, they form a captivating duo that propels the narrative forward. Both actors masterfully make their characters feel authentic and relatable, striking a harmonious balance between comedic moments and emotional resonance.

Beyond the leads, the impeccable casting extends to the notable supporting cast, each actor bringing their respective roles to life with precision and adding significant depth and authenticity to the portrayal of family dynamics. **Jisma Vimal** delivers a noteworthy performance, adding depth to the family dynamic. The ensemble cast includes other talented actors like **Vijay Jacob, Ashwathy, Riyaz Khan, Deepu G Panicker, Lijo Jose Pellissery, Abu Salim, Chandu Salimkumar, and Roshan Shanavas**, each contributing to the film's rich tapestry of characters. Their performances are finely tuned, ensuring that every character, no matter the screen time, feels integral to the overall narrative fabric.

**Comic Timing and Jokes**

The comic timing in Painkili is truly a standout feature. The humor is seamlessly integrated into the narrative, often arising from the characters' interactions and their unique perspectives on everyday situations. The jokes themselves range from witty one-liners to more situational comedy, landing effectively without feeling forced or out of place. The delivery of the comedic lines by the actors is spot-on, enhancing the impact of each punchline and eliciting genuine laughter. Importantly, the relevance of the jokes to the characters and the situations ensures that the humor feels organic and contributes to the overall lighthearted tone of the film.

**Music and Songs**

The soundtrack of Painkili is undeniably one of its most memorable elements. The song "Vazhkai" stands out as a truly beautiful and soul-stirring melody that harmonizes perfectly with the film's emotional trajectory. This song beautifully encapsulates the essence of life's unpredictable journey and the inner strength required to navigate its twists and turns. With its heartfelt lyrics and soothing musical arrangement, "Vazhkai" offers a poignant moment within the film that lingers in the memory long after the final scene.

Complementing this standout track, the film's superb background score (BGM) plays a crucial role in enhancing the mood and emotional landscape of each scene. Whether it's amplifying the lightheartedness during a comedic exchange or intensifying the emotional depth in a more dramatic moment, the BGM is expertly crafted. The music seamlessly integrates with the narrative, amplifying the film's storytelling and maintaining a strong connection with the audience's emotions.

**Cinematography and Visual Appeal**

Painkili is a visual delight, with cinematography that beautifully captures both the inherent beauty and the understated simplicity of the everyday world. The visuals are consistently pleasing to the eye, ranging from vibrant family gatherings to more intimate and reflective moments. The framing and lighting are thoughtfully executed, effectively conveying the intended emotions of each scene. The editing is precise, ensuring a steady and engaging pacing throughout the film, even during its more contemplative moments.

**Final Thoughts**

While Painkili might not break new ground in terms of cinematic innovation, it masterfully achieves its goal of delivering a heartwarming and thoroughly entertaining family film that successfully blends humor, genuine emotion, and a touch of endearing sentimentality. The occasional foray into lighthearted cheesiness only adds to its overall charm and appeal. The film's impeccable comic timing, memorable background score, and the stellar performances, particularly from the lead actors, make it a genuinely fun and feel-good cinematic experience that resonates with a broad audience.

The team behind Painkili, including Fahadh Faasil & Friends Productions, deserves commendation for bringing this lovely story to the screen. Anaswara Rajan and Sajin Gopu warrant particular praise for their compelling and nuanced performances. The entire cast and crew have collectively delivered a fantastic piece of work, making Painkili a highly recommended watch for anyone seeking a lighthearted yet emotionally resonant film. Whether you're in the mood for laughter, a few heartfelt moments, or simply an uplifting story, Painkili is sure to deliver on all fronts.

A Feel-Good Romantic Comedy with Heart and Humor

Painkili stands out as a light-hearted romantic comedy that genuinely made me smile. From start to finish, the film offers a steady stream of humor that keeps the audience engaged. The comedy sequences, in particular, are the highlight - clever, well-timed, and effortlessly enjoyable.

The storyline has its charm and carries the rom-com vibe well throughout. While the climax felt like it could have been stronger, it doesn't take away from the overall feel-good experience the movie delivers.

The performances vary at times, but for a film in this genre, it works. If you enjoy movies that don't take themselves too seriously and aim to simply entertain, Painkili will do just that. It may not have gotten the attention it deserved in theatres, but it definitely found a fan in me.
