Locarno 2025 Lineup Includes New Films by Radu Jude, Alexandre Koberidze, Sophy Romvari, Abdellatif Kechiche & More
Image
Set to take place August 6-16, the 78th edition of the Locarno Film Festival has now unveiled its promising lineup. Among the highlights are the world premieres of Radu Jude’s second feature of 2025, Dracula; Alexandre Koberidze’s Dry Leaf; Sophy Romvari’s Blue Heron; Maureen Fazendeiro’s The Seasons; Le Lac from Jean-Luc Godard’s collaborator Fabrice Aragno; Ben Rivers’ Mare’s Nest; Abdellatif Kechiche’s long-awaited sequel Mektoub, My Love: Canto Due; Sho Miyake’s Two Seasons, Two Strangers; and many more.

“Building the program of the Locarno Film Festival means engaging with the living matter of contemporary cinema. A cinema that unfolds while the world is undergoing violent upheavals, while we witness – in real time – horrors that we had only read about in history books or studied in archival footage,” said Giona A. Nazzaro, Artistic Director.

He continues, “The question is simple, and brutal in its inevitability:...

‘Dracula’ by Radu Jude, David Lynch-Exec Produced ‘Happy Worker’ Set for Locarno Lineup
Image
Get ready for Dracula, a movie made with the participation of the late filmmaking legend David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, this year’s Cannes winner It Was Just an Accident, and much more, as the Locarno International Film Festival on Tuesday unveiled the lineup for its 78th edition. Dracula by Romanian director Radu Jude will get its world premiere as part of the Swiss fest’s competition program, while Duwayne Dunham (Return of the Jedi, Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet) will bring the debut of Legend of the Happy Worker, executive produced by Lynch, to the out-of-competition lineup.

Locarno, taking place Aug. 6-16, will also present the latest works from the likes of Abdelletif Kechiche, Vincent Grashaw, Sho Miyake, Ben Rivers, and Rosanne Pel, among others.

Locarno’s Concorso Cineasti del Presente (“Filmmakers of the Present”) sidebar, which puts the spotlight on first and second features, will include the...

Locarno: Radu Jude, Abdellatif Kechiche & ‘Viet And Nam’ Filmmaker Trương Minh Quý Among Directors Set To Debut New Works In Competition
Image
Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival will debut 17 features, including new works by Radu Jude and Abdellatif Kechiche, as part of its 2025 competition. This year’s event runs from August 6 to 16.

The festival announced its competition lineups this morning. The Radu Jude feature is his much-talked-about Dracula. The film was shot in Transylvania and is said to blend several takes on the Dracula story. Teasing the project as last year’s Locarno Film Festival, Jude said: “I am from Romania. My father is actually from Transylvania. It’s time that someone from Romania does a Dracula film. It’s only Hollywood that has done it 1,000 times. We shouldn’t let Hollywood dominate our Dracula.”

The Abdellatif Kechiche feature is Mektoub, My Love: Canto Due, the third edition in his controversial Mektoub series. Ben Rivers, a Locarno regular, will debut his latest feature, Mare’s Nest. Scroll down for the full Loarno lineup.

‘Heads or Tails?’ Review: Delightfully Madcap Euro-Western Serves Up Spaghetti With a Lot of Sauce
Image
The Wild West looks tame beside the lawless, senseless Continental plains and sierras of “Heads or Tails?,” an enjoyably off-kilter Euro-western that honors the stylistic and structural traditions of the genre while occupying its own reality entirely. The second feature from Italian directing duo Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis features a rogue outlaw cowboy, a gutsy, pistol-toting widow and Buffalo Bill Cody himself — all variously on the loose in a suitably parched stretch of northern Italy. But if those sound like standard ingredients for an old-school oater, or even a Leone-era spaghetti joint, this sui generis item takes a turn for the eccentric even before it pivots into outright surrealism.

One of the more irreverent titles at this year’s Cannes festival — where it premiered in the Un Certain Regard strand — “Heads or Tails?” is looser and loopier than de Righi and Zoppis’ cultish 2021 festival hit “The Tale of King Crab,...

Cannes Awards: Jafar Panahi Vindicated With Palme d’Or for ‘It Was Just an Accident,’ Marking Sixth Consecutive Cannes Win for Neon
Image
Bringing a turbulent world together through cinema, the 78th Cannes Film Festival closed with its most political moment, as Iranian director Jafar Panahi accepted the Palme d’Or for “It Was Just an Accident,” a film directly inspired by his time in prison.

Filled with equal helpings of absurdist humor and ire, Panahi’s film follows five characters who think they’ve identified the prosecutor who tortured them during their own arrests — but as they were all blindfolded in jail, none can be entirely certain their captive is the same man.

Since Panahi’s first arrest and conviction for “propaganda against the regime” in 2010, the director has continued to make films, even when expressly forbidden from doing so. In 2011, he sent a flash drive to Cannes with his movie, “This Is Not a Film,” and has remained a vocal defender of other directors whose work the government seeks to suppress.

Jafar Panahi Wins Cannes Palme d’Or for ‘It Was Just an Accident’
Image
Dissident Iranian director Jafar Panahi has won the Palme d’Or for best film for It Was Just an Accident at the 78th Cannes international film festival.

Panahi, who just a few years ago was imprisoned in Tehran and under a 20-year travel and work ban, returned triumphantly to Cannes, accepting his award from jury president (and vocal Panahi fan) Juliette Binoche.

Panahi’s film, his first since being released from prison in 2023, is a direct assault on Iran’s authoritarian regime. The thriller follows a former political prisoner who kidnaps a man he believes to be his torturer and then debates with other dissidents whether to kill or forgive him.

The win marks the sixth time in a row a film acquired by Neon for North America has won the Palme d’Or. Tom Quinn’s indie outfit kept its Cannes streak going by picking up It Was Just an Accident earlier this week.

Rai Cinema Celebrates ‘Heads or Tails?’ at Cannes and Readies for More Hits: ‘Cinema Without Audience Doesn’t Exist’
Image
It was all about Wild West myths and classy Negronis as Rai Cinema celebrated “Heads or Tails?” in Cannes on Thursday.

Presented in Un Certain Regard and directed by Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis, the surreal western follows Rosa (Nadia Tereszkiewicz), who, trapped in an unhappy marriage, flees with daredevil Santino (Alessandro Borghi). Many go after them, including Buffalo Bill (John C. Reilly).

“It’s a very original film and I think it will have a great impact. Not only in Italy, but in the world. It touches upon themes that are universal. There’s love, power and a little bit of politics,” CEO of Rai Cinema Paolo del Brocco told Variety at the event.

“It’s difficult to invent new things in cinema, but we hope more original films will come [in the future]. When we see a new idea, we invest a lot in it. We want it to be done well.

John C. Reilly Brings the Wild American West to Italy as Buffalo Bill in Cannes Premiere ‘Heads or Tails?’ — Watch Exclusive Clip
Image
All’s fair in love, war, and the flip of a coin. Italian Western “Heads or Tails?” turns back time to capture the famed “Wild West Show,” hosted by Buffalo Bill (née William F. Cody), which brought the myth of the American frontier abroad. In a twist of divine casting, John C. Reilly plays the iconic Buffalo Bill. The feature premieres at Cannes this year in the Un Certain Regard section as a sales title; this is Reilly’s recent return to the festival, as the star was previously the president of the Un Certain Regard jury for the 76th edition in 2023. Watch an exclusive clip in the video above.

Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis co-direct “Heads or Tails?,” which centers on how Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show changes the perspective of Italian woman Rosa, who is trapped in a stifling marriage to a powerful and violent landowner.

John C. Reilly Is Buffalo Bill in Cannes Film ‘Heads or Tails?,’ a Deconstruction of Cowboys and Legends
Image
John C. Reilly stars as Buffalo Bill in the surreal westerns- and heroes-deconstructing parable Heads or Tails? (Testa o croce?), the new feature from Italian writers-directors Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis (The Tale of King Crab), which world premieres in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section.

French-Finnish actress Nadia Tereszkiewicz (Red Island, The Crime Is Mine) and Italian actor Alessandro Borghi (Supersex, The Eight Mountains) lead the cast of the movie that dissects such themes as fame, myths, and storytelling.

The story, which the creator duo wrote with Carlo Salsa, begins with a documented 1890 Italy trip by frontiersman Buffalo Bill to bring his popular “Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show” to European audiences, and with it, the legend of U.S. frontier life.

At the show, Rosa (Tereszkiewicz), the young wife of a nobleman, falls in love with Santino (Borghi), an Italian cowboy, or buttero, who wins a contest...

Young Italian Filmmakers Come to the Fore at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard
Image
This year’s Italian presence at Cannes – one entry in competition by veteran auteur Mario Martone and two by young directors that landed slots in Un Certain Regard – accurately reflects the current state of Cinema Italiano.

Broadly speaking, following a protracted growth spurt, there has been a slowdown in production activity caused by the fact that the government has been dithering with modifications on tax incentives for local film and TV productions, which has stalled the greenlight process, especially for bigger-budget Italian movies.

But even though getting films financed has gotten tougher, a new generation of directors is bubbling under, alongside well-known names such as Paolo Sorrentino, Luca Guadagnino, Alice Rohrwacher and Nanni Moretti.

“I have the impression that once again we are seeing young [Italian] directors emerging and this is formidable,” Thierry Fremaux noted while announcing the lineup. The Cannes boss went on to add that “Italy is historically a...

Cannes: Indie Film Investors Bet on New Theatrical Company 1-2 Special (Exclusive)
Image
The indie film world is betting on 1-2 Special.

The spanking new U.S. theatrical distributor has closed its first round of equity financing, securing backing from a group of private investors led by Alex Lo’s Cinema Inutile. Anita Gou’s Kindred Spirit, Chris Quintos Cathcart and Tyler Boehm’s Unapologetic Projects, and Bill and Mary Way’s Fit Via Vi are also first-round investors in New York-based 1-2.

Launched by former Sideshow executive Jason Hellerstein in February, 1-2 Special is set up as a theatrical-first, all rights distributor, dedicated to “acquiring and releasing exceptional films from top-tier domestic and international festivals.” 1-2 picked up its first feature, Kontinental ’25, from acclaimed Romanian director Radu Jude (Bad Luck Banging, Or Looney Porn) out of the 2025 Berlin International Film Festival. With its coffers full of Pe cash, we expect 1-2 will be an active buyer in Cannes.

Scarlett Johansson
Cannes 2025 | Full line up for this year’s film festival
Scarlett Johansson
The Cannes Film Festival 2025 line-up reveals the films that likely will be chatted about long through the year. Here’s what’s showing.

Cannes Film Festival has published its official line-up for this year’s event, and we get our first hint at the films that are set to be part of the awards conversation for the coming months. The festival will be screening several interesting films, including the directorial debuts of Scarlett Johansson and Harris Dickinson in the new filmmaker category.

Screening out of competition will be Spike Lee’s latest offering, Highest 2 Lowest, and Tom Cruise and company are taking Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning to the festival too. This has proved to be a public relations misstep in the past (remember Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny?) but with Mission releasing so soon after the festival, this seems like a savvy move to us.

The list of this year’s Cannes Film Festival features Ari Aster’s Eddington, Phoenician Scheme, Mission: Impossible and more
Image
The full list of films that will be screening at the 78th Annual Cannes Film Festival has been released. The line-up was announced this morning by the Cannes delegate general Thierry Frémaux and President Iris Knobloch at a press conference in Paris. The Hollywood Reporter has shared the program listing for this year’s event. While there are a number of anticipated high-profile titles, a bevy of auteurs will be showcasing their latest, including Kelly Reichardt, who will be returning to the competition with The Mastermind. The film is an art-heist drama and stars Josh O’Connor and John Magaro, which takes place during the Vietnam War.

Joachim Trier, the Norwegian filmmaker who made a splash in 2021 with The Worst Person of the World, returns with the new film Sentimental Value, which features Renate Reinsve. Julia Ducournau, the director of the surreal film, Titane, which got her a Palme d’Or...
