Emma Mackey is getting put in a mystery box.
The “Sex Education” and “Barbie” breakout is joining Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega in lead roles in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Warner Bros. feature, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Details of Abrams’ first film since “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” are being kept mysterious — all we really know about it is that it won’t involve time travel. It will be the box-office-dominating writer-director-producer’s first film not based on I.P. since 2011’s “Super 8.” Abrams’ company Bad Robot is producing.
Mackey is a rising star who made her debut in Netflix’s comedy series “Sex Education” in 2019. She earned a BAFTA nomination for her performance as entrepreneurial high school student Maeve Wiley in the hit series. She also appeared in “Barbie,” the biggest film of 2023, as Physicist Barbie, a role that played up her physical resemblance to Margot Robbie.

Emma Mackey, the British actress best known for her work in Netflix’s Sex Education, has nabbed the female lead in J.J. Abrams’ untitled feature at Warner Bros.
The actress, who appeared as a Barbie in the studio’s billion-dollar grossing Barbie last year, will now join Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega in what is described as being a trifecta of leads.
Abrams wrote the script for the feature, whose logline and description is being kept in the mystery box. At one point it was speculated to involve time travel, but sources say that is not the case.
Abrams’ Bad Robot is producing.
The project has been percolating for months (Powell signed on back in May) but is finally heading before cameras early next year.
Mackey has been on a slingshot trajectory the past few years. Among her recent work has been starring as the titular character in Emily,...

BAFTA winner Emma Mackey (Barbie) is set to star opposite new A-listers Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega in J.J. Abrams’ still-untitled mystery movie for Warner Bros and his Bad Robot, Deadline has learned.
Mackey’s role is under wraps, as is the film’s plot, though we hear it’s not a time-travel film, as some have conjectured. Abrams will direct from his own script, with Bad Robot producing.
A 2023 recipient of BAFTA’s Rising Star Award, Mackey has most recently seen in Greta Gerwig’s Oscar-winning Warner Bros phenom Barbie, prior to that taking on the lead as famed novelist and poet Emily Brontë in Frances O’Connor’s Warner Bros drama Emily. Breaking out with her role as Maeve Wiley on Netflix’s Sex Education, Mackey has also previously been seen in Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile. Upcoming, she’ll star opposite Fiona Shaw, Vicky Krieps...

When you get the opportunity to interview Rob Reiner and Albert Brooks together it is indeed a special occasion. And that is just what I got to do earlier this week when they joined me at our Deadline Studio for this episode of my Deadline video series, Behind The Lens. Reiner has directed and appears with Brooks in the ultimate documentary (Reiner’s first) on Brooks entitled Albert Brooks: Defending My Life which is available on HBO and Max, and for fans of both it is a gem not to be missed. Our half hour conversation is not only hilarious in parts, but also eye-opening and full of some very surprising revelations. Check out a 2 minute preview where Brooks explains to me just how he and legendary director Stanley Kubrick became friends when Kubrick geeked out on Brooks’ film, Modern Romance.
