Very highly rated and highly anticipated. It's finally out and.......was unfortunately a let down for me.
The film has done something spectacular and new which, I have a feeling, connects differently with the Mollywood audience, especially the regular movie watchers. Without spoilers, there are references to...some big names in the industry, present and past, that may go over your head - which takes away from the experience that the film wants all its watchers to have. I wish I'd lowkey spoiled the film for myself so that I watched it with context but...ah well.
That said, the one thing that I did catch had me like "Wait, no way they did that. How did they....? Oh. Interesting." That's sadly my only highlight from the film because the plot overall is very predictable. How the weave the plot with real life Mollywood, I think, was the USP. As long as you know enough to catch the novelty in this film, (Y) If you can't, because you didn't have any context, which I didn't, this might be a let down, even though the film is a blockbuster hit in Kerala. All that said, what a few months has Asif Ali had. Thalavan, Kishkindha Kaandam, and now this. Good for him!
I'd encourage you to watch the film anyway, to support the effort, but just tame your expectations if you haven't watched a lot of Malayalam movies, especially the old ones.

A new year has begun, and Malayalam cinema is off to a strong start, delivering captivating stories and immersive cinematic experiences.
The story follows Vivek, a cop who, after being suspended, is assigned a 40-year-old cold case involving an unidentifiable skeleton. This discovery opens a Pandora's box of suspects & lot of dead ends. With a faceless victim and some powerful individuals implicated, can Vivek uncover the truth and bring the culprits to justice?
This suspenseful investigative drama keeps you on the edge of your seat. While it doesn't introduce a premise you haven't seen before, the way the screenplay is executed breathes new life into a tried-and-tested genre. The brilliance of the writing lies in its connection to real film stories and footage, as well as its portrayal of actual artists from the industry. The writer deserves credit for thinking outside the box and offering something fresh to the audience.
Asif Ali shines in the lead role, delivering an outstanding performance as a cop. With his recent choice of films, he's proving to be not just a bankable star but also an actor you can trust to pick compelling projects. Manoj K. Jayan delivers an earnest performance, while Anwara Rajan, in a limited role, makes a lasting impression. Additionally, several cameos of industry figures playing themselves add depth and gravitas to the movie.
Although the suspense reveal may not completely blow your mind, it still manages to defy expectations. The pace of the narrative is tight, ensuring there are no dull moments. However, there are a few cinematic loopholes that are hard to overlook. The de-aging of Mammootty has been executed with technical brilliance which with tons of money Vijay's GOAT couldn't achieve.
Director Jofin T. Chacko offers something unique for fans of the genre. If you're a sucker for suspense or investigative thrillers, this one deserves a spot on your watchlist.

This is the first time I am seeing such a movie in Indian Cinema . To tell the flashbacks, AI was used perfectly well. But the screenplay is a let down at multiple places .. Performance of Siddique, Anaswara Rajan and lot many new comers are superb. The flashbacks scenes and the artwork for those scenes are also , aptly made. Overall, I would say , a brilliant story, an outstanding direction, and an average screen play. Songs also could have been better , but background score is good. The editing is also a good one . To point out the downside of screenplay, I would have to put down spoilers, so I am not doing so.

Hey all, I just watched Rekhachithram (2025), and I must say, it's a nice movie. To be honest, I'm a bit confused about the genre of the film. It doesn't feel like a complete thriller, nor does it fit entirely into the drama category. Instead, it's more of a mixture of genres-an investigation drama thriller.
The film carries elements of mystery, but it's not overloaded with twists or the kind of suspense typically found in a traditional mystery. Yet, it holds enough intrigue to keep you engaged. What impressed me the most is how the film blends multiple genres seamlessly. I've seen this kind of genre-blending in Hollywood, but I'm doubtful if Malayalam cinema has explored it to this extent before.
The casting is spot-on, with each actor delivering a commendable performance. The cinematography is well-executed, capturing the essence of the narrative beautifully. While the film uses limited music, the background score is impactful and elevates the thriller aspects, adding a gripping pace to the story.
What stands out most is the fiction itself. The movie revisits themes from the classic Malayalam film Kathodu Kathoram (1985), and it does so in a way that makes the fictional elements feel real. The narrative blurs the line between fiction and reality, leaving you questioning whether the events and circumstances portrayed could have actually happened. To me, that's the hallmark of a well-crafted fiction.
I also appreciated how the film transitions between past and present, portraying both time periods effectively. It's a thoughtful way to structure the story and adds depth to the overall experience.
In conclusion, Rekhachithram is a film you can enjoy in theaters without the burden of overhyped expectations. It's unique in its storytelling approach, and for that alone, it's worth watching.

Each part of the story was connecting to each other very well. Last but not the least climax was also good. Asif ali perfomance was commendable. BGM sound effects were also so nicely done. Rekhachithram is an investigation thriller that thrives on a sharp, no-nonsense screenplay but falls victim to its own excesses. The film sets up an intriguing premise, backed by a solid plot and a gripping background score that enhances the tension. However, as the story unfolds, it bombards the audience with too many details and an overload of characters, which ultimately dilutes the impact of the investigation. Instead of keeping viewers on the edge of their seats, it leads them down an overly complex path, making the final revelation feel more expected than shocking.
While the film is undoubtedly crafted with precision, its obsession with intricacy works against it. The saying "less is more" perfectly applies here, had the narrative been more streamlined, the thrill factor could have been significantly higher. Despite its shortcomings, Rekhachithram remains a stylish, one-time watch that keeps you engaged, even if it doesn't leave a lasting impression. It may be a bit overrated, but it's not entirely forgettable.

Went to watch this movie with least expectation, but was surprised and impressed with the way they have presented the movie. It is basically an investigation thriller movie. Normally movies of this genre, contain lot of twists n turns before arriving at culprit, which sometimes create lot of confusions and question marks for the audience. But here we can see that the culprits are known from the beginning itself. What makes the movie really thrilling is -the way they conduct the investigation, the way they present an incident (crime)that took place around 40 years back (in a movie shooting set )and the factors that led to the crime etc. The actors have given 100% performance. It is sure that movie is going to be an all time classic malayalam movie, can expect remake of this movie in many other languages.

- 'Rekhachitram' directed by Jofin. T. Chacko starring Asif Ali and Anaswara Rajan has a very interesting plot and many cameos which was good but the film somewhat followed a generic thriller film template. It was not the story that felt generic to me but the execution. Some of the shots are like template for thriller films in malayalam industry nowadays. However the performances in the film especially by Asif Ali was great. The cameos and the story being revolved around cinema was nice to see. The score by Mujeeb Majeed was also good. I also really liked how the characters and the story of the film connected with each other. It is definitely enjoyable and thrilling here and there but it fails to maintain that momentum. Decent watch.

The movie is written exceptionally well. All characters are given their due importance, making it a wholesome experience.
I thoroughly enjoyed the way the story unfolded, with no dull moments throughout.
Even the cameo appearances were seamlessly integrated into the storyline, adding depth rather than feeling forced.
The movie cleverly builds up to a surprising twist at the end, leaving the audience satisfied and amazed. The trailer clearly deceives everyone from guessing the real story, keeping the suspense alive.
Congratulations to the incredible cast and crew for delivering such a phenomenal and memorable film!

I went into this movie after hearing some positive reviews. I had no idea what the movie was about or who all were in it. I was told this was a crime thriller. But I didn't find any thrill in this.
The dialogues and script are all so artificial. If this movie came out 10 years ago it would be fine. But considering the quality of today's malayalam cinema. This is not acceptable.
The story doesn't make sense. Characters' actions are totally weird and all characters are so one dimensional. There's some good aspects in the movie. But the story has so many problems, it's really dumb actually.
Really disappointed with this. I totally don't understand all the positive reviews and hype around this. All the great parts of the movie is totally overshadowed by the utter disappointment of a story. It's not a bad story, it's a dumb story.

Rekhachithram (2025) is a compelling Malayalam mystery thriller directed by Jofin T. Chacko. The narrative centers on CI Vivek Gopinath, portrayed by Asif Ali, a police officer reinstated after a suspension due to gambling issues. Assigned to the tranquil Malakkappara station, Vivek's routine is disrupted when Rajendran (Siddique) publicly confesses to a decades-old crime before committing suicide. This revelation leads Vivek to investigate the 1985 disappearance of Rekha Pathrose (Anaswara Rajan) from the film set of Kathodu Kathoram. The film intricately weaves past and present, blending real and fictional elements to craft a gripping narrative. Asif Ali delivers a standout performance, capturing Vivek's complexity and determination. Anaswara Rajan's portrayal of Rekha adds depth to the story, while the supporting cast, including Manoj K. Jayan and Indrans, enrich the film's texture. The cinematography by Appu Prabhakar beautifully captures the serene yet mysterious ambiance of Malakkappara. Rekhachithram is a must-watch for fans of intricate storytelling and stellar performances.

Tinkering with history and weaving fiction around it isn't new in cinema. Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a prime example. But what Rekhachitram accomplishes is something far more audacious-it doesn't just borrow from history; it makes history an intrinsic part of a gripping thriller.
The story unravels with the discovery of an unidentified skeleton buried beneath the earth, setting the stage for an electrifying investigation. From that very moment, the film commands unwavering attention, refusing to let go. The storytelling is so immersive, so meticulously crafted, that I found myself utterly transfixed, unable to shift my gaze even for a second-exactly what one hopes for from an exceptional cinematic experience.
While an OTT release is inevitable, Rekhachitram is best savored on the big screen. For ardent cinephiles, who revel in quality storytelling, this one is an absolute must-watch. Highly recommended!

They do not have the ostentations of Bollywood. They do not have the so called 'Pan India' tag attached to them. Yet Malayalam film directors have fascinated movie connoisseurs like us for ages. They seriously do not need CGI laden theatrics like the Telugu or Kannada movies. They do not need superstars with humongous fan base to ensure instant blockbusters even though they have gifted this country some of the most legendary superstars and actors. But what they possess is something the entire Indian film industry is in dire need now. Originality of contents, willingness to experiment and take the path less trodden. 'Rekhachithram' a gripping thriller on a murder mystery unsolved for decades is once again a testament to this fact. Unfortunately, there is no uproar over such creative content on the social media where fans are busy hailing or lambasting cringe contents like Sikander or Chhaava.
'Rekhachithram' , directed by Jofin T. Chacko is a complex, chilling, mind bending and no-nonsense thriller digging deep into human psyche, greed and the fulfillment of redemption. The story is centered around a disgraced cop recently reinstated from suspension for the offence of gambling, trying to find out the truth behind a murder that took place four decades back. As the plot unravels, CI Vivek Gopinath discovers the intricacies of human relationships, the pangs of tender dreams being shattered and the unholy nexus of power and politics to bury the crimes committed by those in power. With a runtime of nearly 147 minutes, the film is loosely based on real-life events, particularly the Sister Abhaya case and the filming of Bharathan's 1985 movie "Kathodu Kathoram," where a junior artist died under suspicious circumstances.
The narrative is sleek and tension is palpable throughout the length of the movie. Cinematography by Appu Prabhakar is top-notch and the long shots of Kerala or Kanyakumarika are treats to the eyes. Screenplay is tight barring the last haf an hour which could have been edited better. Asif Ali as the protagonist shines and you keep on rooting for him throughout. Manoj K Jayan as the crooked Vincent does a commendable job. Anaswara Rajan as enigmatic Rekha is brilliant and she surely has a glorious career ahead. Her eyes, smiles, composure, effervescence - everything is ethereal. It was hard to find any significant flaws in the acting of the rest of the cast. Did I forget to mention that superstar Mammootty plays a very crucial role in the plot even without being directly involved in the cast? Another beauty of Malayalam cinema !
From Manjummel Boys to Drishyam, from Bhramayugam to Aattam, from Aavesham to Guppi, Malayalam industry never fails to create one gem after another. 'Rekhachithram' by Jofin T. Chacko is yet another addition to this treasure trove. Any negatives? Yes, there are some loose ends which do not come to a full circle in the climax and there are some unanswered questions about some characters. The editing could have been crispier as well. But the flaws are so minuscule to the mammothness of achievement, the fun will not be dampened.
My rating- 8.5 out of 10 Streaming on - Sony Liv.

Rekhachithram (Sketch) is a commendable effort in invoking nostalgia, which it does using a fashion that cannot exactly be called a trope. The film follows the investigation of a crime committed several years ago and quickly manages to involve the audience in the hunt. While the audience is a mere spectator, they're bound to enjoy the procedural, with past movie references and CGI-improved footage that makes for visual glory in the film. The smoothness in which the film flows and the novelty of the plot are what made me lose my breath as I watched the story unfold. I kept thinking about the characters long after I left the theatre and that's enough evidence for me to call this a fantastic film. The forced English dialogues are my only gripe.

Set in 2025, Rekhachitram is an investigative alternate history centered on a case from 1985. In films like Talvar, which is rooted in real events, investigations of decades-old crimes are portrayed as extremely challenging. Given that Rekhachitram's case is 40 years old, one would expect a complex, arduous investigation. However, the film surprisingly presents a case that unravels too easily.
Nearly every character connected to the original incident effectively solving it, rather than leaving the breakthrough to officer Vivek. Additionally, the visual presentation feels lacking; instead of introducing fresh character dynamics, most characters appear unchanged from their 1985 depictions.
I would say, Kishkindha Kaandam has better representation. Go watch it. Then compare with rekhachitram 😀.

From the poster design itself, Rekhachithram promised something unique, and the trailer only strengthened my confidence. However, my experience with director Joffin T. Chacko's The Priest left me skeptical, as I found it dull and uninspiring. Yet, the overwhelming positive feedback from trusted friends convinced me to give this film a go-and I'm glad I did.
The narrative centers around the suicide revelation of an elderly man, which unravels a murder he and two friends committed over 40 years ago during the production of a Malayalam movie. A disgraced cop begins digging into the case, uncovering layers of mystery.
Asif Ali delivers a stellar performance as the investigating officer, a role that feels tailor-made for him. His minute expressions, dialogue delivery, and overall portrayal are nothing short of impressive. If he continues to choose such strong scripts, his presence in Malayalam cinema will undoubtedly remain for years to come.
Anaswara Rajan, despite limited screen time, shines in every frame and does justice to the titular role.
Manoj K. Jayan, while playing a significant character, was underutilized. His role lacked the depth and strength it deserved, which could have been addressed with better writing.
Siddique, Jagadeesh, Indrans, and Harishree Ashokan play pivotal roles in the film's revelations, albeit with limited screen time.
Zarin Shihab (of Aattam fame) delivers a standout performance, making her role memorable.
Supporting actors like Nishanth Sagar, Bhama Arun, Megha Thomas, and Srikanth Murali also shine with impactful performances.
The AI-generated recreations of Mammootty and Bharathan deserve a mention for being well-executed and not overly distracting.
The story by Ramu Sunil deserves applause for seamlessly blending an investigative thriller with alternate history-an approach rarely explored in Malayalam cinema. The screenplay by Ramu Sunil and John Manthrickal keeps the audience glued to their seats, while Joffin T. Chacko executes the narrative with precision, perfectly balancing nostalgia and tension.
Instead of following a traditional whodunnit formula, the film delves into the victim's past and motivations, mirroring the curiosity of SHO Vivek throughout. While the pace falters slightly in the second half, the overall execution compensates for these minor dips.
Mujeeb Majeed's background score elevates the film, playing a critical role in building intensity and engagement.
Appu Prabhakar's cinematography and Shammer Muhammed's editing are top-notch, contributing to the film's immersive experience.
The use of AI for recreations was subtle and effective, especially when compared to similar attempts in bigger-budget projects like Indian 2.
A fresh narrative style that blends investigative thriller elements with alternate history.
Brilliant performances, particularly by Asif Ali and Zarin Shihab.
Technically polished with engaging visuals and a haunting score.
Manoj K. Jayan's character could have been written with more depth.
A slight dip in pacing during the second half.
A historical inaccuracy: the Indian Postal Service logo from the 1980s is inaccurately shown as the one used during 1995-2007.
Rekhachithram is a technically brilliant and refreshingly unique thriller that stands out for its engaging narrative and exceptional performances. It's a cinematic treat, witnessed a standing ovation in the theater (UAE) after a long time.
Rating: 9.2/10.

Just when you think the Malayalam movie industry has produced enough thrillers, they drop another one that offers something new however small the newness maybe. Rekhachithram, directed by Jofin T. Chacko, falls in that category. While this has been marketed as suspense thriller, i'll say this is more of a drama interlaced with an investigative thriller.
Normally, in investigative thrillers, we follow the protagonist, usually a cop, trying to solve a mystery by identifying the perpetrator. Victims and their stories usually don't get much attention. The attention usually would be on the procedural. This is where Rekhachithram takes a different approach. We are told what the crime is, who committed the crime and when within the first few minutes. The rest of the movie is inspector Vivek, played by Asif Ali, trying to prove it and find out who the victim is and why they were killed. This procedural unfolds slowly like a drama happening in front of our eyes.
What makes this a good watch is the emotional connection we form with the victim and that makes a big impact in the end. I felt sad. This was because the brilliant writing by Ramu Sunil, Jofin T. Chacko and John Manthrickal and some top noth performances by Anaswara Rajan and Zarin Shihab. Anaswara Rajan plays Rekha whose ambition is to become a movie star but her upbringing poses hurdles and how she chases her dreams.
Some real events in 1984 that happened during the filming of Mammotty's Kathodu Kathoram directed by Bharathan formed as inspiration to this story. A junior artist died under suspicious conditions and the case was closed as it was a dead end. Writer Ramu Sunil took this event and weaved a story around it with real movie names, actors, directors and locations. This movie reads like historical fiction which adds a little more intrigue and prevents the movie from turning bland which is what most investigative thrillers end up being.
Overall, Rekhachithram is an emotional drama about Rekha and her dreams. While the slow burn may not be for everyone, I did enjoy it thoroughly. I recommend watching.

Rekhachithram Malayalam movie
1st half first 20 minutes hooked very well and later investigation produces are not engaging.
2nd half , the flash back story hooked me & I like it
Anaswara Rajan performance is good
Music is 👍👍

Plot :: Having recently served a suspension for gambling online while on duty, Circle Inspector Vivek Gopinath rejoins the police force and is looking to reclaim his lost honour. Awaiting him is a 40-year-old, unresolved murder mystery with a faceless victim.one that had been meant for Rekha. Vivek delivers it to Asha, fulfilling a long-lost dream of the deceased.

Loved this movie !
I would classify this as a drama more than a thriller - but a alternate history drama flawless executed with some impeccable acting, script and editing !
Alternate history when executed right - when it is solid coherently and invoke nostalgia and wonder - when it is done in such a manner in which it seems plausible ; that is historically coherent to events that happened and given proper respect to old characters ( some not alive today ) - is just magic ! We can see this in Forest Gump, Hey Ram etc.
I would highly recommend this movie ! Especially to those who knows Malayalam Movies ( especially movies from 80s )
