...40 and older movie

Its not a pretty movie. Its captured someplace in Ireland. Gray, cold, damp, desolate, solemn looking place. You hardly see anyone around, which I thought was odd. Gave me that Twilight Zone feel.

The acting is done well. Story is drama filled, with life and its consequences of bad and right decisions. You become the subject looking out to the world in his eyes. He's tenacious, patient and willing to do right thing. But those past habits always seem to be, not so far away. Boxing is thing out there. I figured it was predominately pubs and factories. Which adds historical interest. Its slow paced, but situations keep the interest moving. I would say the movie will be better received from matured audience. People that have lived and encountered similar situations.

Why the pundits gave it 4 stars is beyond me. I would crack it around 7.

surprisingly effective

Greetings again from the darkness. After reading the synopsis, I was tempted to pass on this one and move on to the next film on the list. What could possibly be appealing about another fading boxer whose life is in shambles? Co-directors Bjorn Franklin (also the screenwriter) and Johnny Marchetta are frequent collaborators on music videos, and this, their first feature film, is a solid action-melodrama with some moving parts that all (OK, mostly) come together. It also has a surprisingly effective lead performance.

Living in Wales, Sal (Toby Kebbell, "Servant") is a past-his-prime boxer taking falls in the ring at night, while showing touching care in his day job at the local Nursing Home. Sal is getting by, but it's clear he needs no sunglasses for his future. His teenage daughter, Molly (Kila Lord Cassidy) is holding on to anger towards him, while his ex-wife (Elaine Cassidy) mostly wishes he would just leave them alone. Matching the mostly joyless life Sal leads is the lighting and atmosphere created by the filmmakers ... hometown looks like a place where smiles are rare.

Just as we are adjusting to Sal's bleak existence and his misguided attempts to improve his lot through his job and slowly improving relationship with Molly, a bad influence pops up in the form of Vince (Shia LaBeouf). Sal and Vince were friends and boxing buddies in their younger days, and now, just out of prison, Vince wants to get the band back together for nefarious activities that can bring them some cash. And just like that, the melodrama of Sal's struggling becomes a bit of a crime drama, where Vince infuses chaos and Sal makes more poor decisions.

Sal's long-time trainer and mentor, old-timer Welly (James Cosmo) tries desperately to keep Sal on track and even scores him a real opportunity for redemption. Of course, we have come to know Sal as a man with the best intentions, but an inability to overcome the constant hurdles life puts in his way. Toby Kebbell delivers a truly touching performance as Sal, and his personal struggles are certainly the best part of the film. Shia LaBeouf adds heft as a guy we may initially misjudge, yet in this world happy endings are tougher to come by than victories in the ring.

Now available OnDemand and on Digital platforms.

Moody, gloomy, blue-collar Brit drama with a strong lead - but "Calm With Horses" it ain't

In moody blue-collar Brit drama "Salvable" Toby Kebbell (terrific under-rated actor) struggles in his small depressed town to balance his care assistant job, fading nonentitive boxing career (under coach James Cosmo), and relationship with ex-wife Elaine Cassidy & their teen Kíla Lord Cassidy (Elaine's actual daughter)... then old small-time crim pal Shia LaBeouf (with weird accent & goons inc Michael Socha) offers an alternative path. For their debut, co-directors Bjorn Franklin (with his debut screenplay) & Johnny Marchetta forgo 'feel-good' for authentic gloom, but too much so. For similar themes with superior balance opt instead for "Calm With Horses".

Really cool movie !

Dark ,gritty and amazing cinematography. This movie really pulled me in and I was gripped !

Great casting !

Each actor was completely believable The music was great too !

I hope I can buy the soundtrack somewhere as it had a real theme running through every song and totally complimented every scene .

Bjorn Franklins story and directing is top class !

The friendship between actors Toby and Shia character was very moving and made me want to root for both of them to win .

I tough the young 14 year old daughters acting was way beyond her years and deserves attention .

Over all I think this movie is great and will be up for some awards !

How many times has this been done ?

I have to admit I only made it through about 15 minutes of this film before I turned it off. I started to watch it because I like both Toby Kebell and Shia as actors, but how many times has a story like this been done and better ? That first 15 minutes was not only slow and boring but it could have been any scene out of any depressing gray film from Ireland or Scotland involving boxers. Maybe every story has already been done, but I want to see films that will hold my attention and offer something that hasn't been done 10,000 times before. There was nothing on screen of any interest and all I saw were Toby and Shia acting. Down on his luck has-been boxer, guys who are straight out of prison, unhappy marriages, how many clichés can you fit into one movie ? How hard can it be to throw in a different angle. If these actors thought their mere presence in the film was enough to elevate it to something special , they were wrong.

Gritty Knockout of a film

Is it a hit or a knockout blow?

Salvable tells the story of Sal (Toby Kebbell), an ex-boxer who has hit on hard times following his last loss in the ring. Whilst continuing to train with grizzly boxing coach Welly (James Cosmo), Sal struggles to keep motivated with his care home job and creates more tensions with his ex-wife when trying to get custody of his daughter.

This get even more tense when his old friend Vince (Shia LaBeouf) turns up after 14 years in jail and begins to rope Sal into the world of underground illegal bareknuckle fighting. Once Sal sees the lucrative draw of the scene, can he keep himself grounded enough to keep life in order or will he spiral out of control even more with the temptation of glory?

Salvable has all the hallmarks of a story we've seen a million times: The underdog, the down-on-his-luck-ex-fighter, the troubled family life, the redemption arc. It would have been easy for this to be a film with an 80's power-ballad training montage and an "ultimate victory" moment, however, the film steers away from being a Hollywood crowd pleaser, and maintains it's gritty bleakness throughout.

Toby Kebbell's performance as Sal is fantastic. He is believable throughout whether it be the boxing training scenes or the plight of the underachieving father. He can say a lot without actually saying it. His mannerisms and tone of delivery does a lot of the work for him, the sign of a truly great actor.

Then there's Shia LaBoeuf. In the first moment he's on screen and you realise he's doing a strong Irish accent, you realise that this is a strong performance from the actor. He's authentic and really well put together.

I went into Salvable not expecting to be blown away but I really enjoyed the performances, the story and the setting. This film was made by someone who wanted to show an authentic look at life rather than a glamorous redemption story.

Gritty, moving Drama

Salvable knocks you out like a good boxer would. Obviously, this isn't a movie about boxing. Our main character does fight people in the ring, but more than that, he fights life and his circumstances. This film powerfully conveys a mood-one of sadness, of tough odds, of hopelessness. And you'll feel all of that: through the music, the gritty, rundown locations, the grimy, raw coastal weather-and most of all through the characters, especially in a layered lead performance by Toby Kebbell.

Sal is the underdog in the story-and this movie, too, started out as an underdog, but turned into a great watch.

Classic low life type movie

Classic story about people with no money, broken homes, broken families, broken psyche, low morality, low intelligence, crime etc.

There is the boxing element to it, but this isn't a boxing movie, it's a drama.

It's well acted, Shia Lebouf is a minor character nice to see him taking some interesting roles, hope he gets back to the mainstream soon.

The acting and cinematography and everything makes this very realistic feeling. Like it's a true story.

Life sometimes breaks a man, and his best just isn't good enough, and there are few helping hands. Is it possible to break away from the grips of fate?

More Bruises Than Breakthroughs

Salvable offers striking visuals and well-choreographed boxing scenes - gritty, kinetic, and grounded - but the storytelling never quite packs a punch. The film centers on Sal, a washed-up boxer battling regret, family estrangement, and the lure of a dangerous comeback. While cinematography beautifully captures the blue-collar grit of Wales and the ring sequences feel authentic, the screenplay remains surface level. His relationships with his daughter and ex-wife feel underdeveloped, pacing suffers in the middle, and the emotional stakes don't fully land. Shia LaBeouf brings some energy as Vince, but mostly just steers Sal toward a predictable end. Salvable looks tough, but it never truly hits below the surface.

Heartbreaker

Caught this by accident as saw the trailer and figured it'd be the usual ex-boxer down on his luck story. But it surprised me. Some real moments in there that got under my skin, especially the stuff with his daughter. I've got two kids myself and one's a teenage girl, so yeah, that part hit home. Toby Kebbell plays it quiet but strong, nothing showy, just real. Reminded me that trying to fix things with your kids doesn't always come with big speeches, just showing up and being there when it counts. It's not perfect, but it's honest and hits you when you're not expecting it. Worth the watch for sure.

Terrific film

Great performances and great debut from the directing duo. LaBeouf is charismatic and compelling as an actor as always. I wish he was on screen more in the film. That would be the only complaint I would have for the film. Kebbel is great in the lead role too. However, it's LaBeouf who as usual, steals the show with his insanely, breathtaking performance as the best friend of Kebbel's protagonist. The directing duo who helmed the film definitely have a promising future as directors in the industry and I'm excited to see their future work. The film should've got a wider theatrical release to be honest.

Still thinking about it!

I Just Watched Salvable - And I'm Still Thinking About It

I didn't expect to walk out of Salvable with my chest tight and my thoughts spiraling - but here we are. This film hit me harder than most movies I've seen in years. It's not just a boxing story. It's a life story. And it floored me.

Toby Kebbell plays Sal, a former boxer who's broken in just about every way - physically, emotionally, spiritually. You feel the weight he's carrying in every scene. He's trying to reconnect with his daughter, navigate a mess of a life, and figure out if redemption is even still possible. Kíla Lord Cassidy, who plays his daughter Molly, is phenomenal. There's a scene between them that honestly made me tear up - it was that raw and real.

Then there's Shia LaBeouf as Vince - the wildcard, the old friend with charm and danger dripping off him. He pulls Sal into this underground boxing world, and everything unravels (or maybe finally comes together?). Shia's performance is electric in the way only he can be - unpredictable, intense, and deeply human.

The film is beautifully shot - grimy where it needs to be, but almost poetic at times. You can tell the directors, Björn Franklin and Johnny Marchetta, care about story and character above all else. Nothing here is flashy. It's all grounded. Gritty. Honest.

What I loved most? It doesn't give you easy answers. Life isn't clean. Choices have consequences. And Salvable doesn't try to sanitize that. It leans into the mess - the heartache, the shame, the stubborn hope.

It's the kind of movie that stays with you. I walked in expecting a boxing flick. I walked out feeling like I'd just witnessed someone fighting for their soul.

If you see Salvable this weekend, bring tissues. And maybe call your dad afterward.

Not what i expected from the trailer...but thats a good thing!

Just to be clear, this is not a boxing movie. It's very much deep in the drama category...and thats a good thing. I did not expect to be so emotionally broken after watching this. As a father myself, i couldn't help but think about my own children.

A stand out movie, one which will stay with me for a while think. The lead actor Sal played by Toby Kebell is outstanding, it almost feels like a real lived in documentary, you are with him every step of this film and you feel his woes even in the quietest moments of the film.

A must watch... but don't expect this to be an action flick, its a slow burn, beautifully crafted and emotionally driven drama. Just flawed me.

A Redemption Tale

A deeply moving feature debut from the directing duo.

Pitch perfect performances from the entire cast. Shia always subverts expectation, and here he makes Vince a slightly crooked guy with heart. Despite the circumstances of how his life turned out, he cares about his friend.

Been a fan of Toby's since early Black Mirror days and with Sal, he brought a nuanced performance that felt new in the genre and made me root for him.

I was surprised how poetic the film unraveled with visuals and details that made me taste the salt in the air. The sound design brought me into Sal's inner world.

I would have loved another 20 minutes in the final act because I really enjoyed spending time with these characters, flaws and all.

I have a feeling this one will linger with me.

A view into life

Relatable film on the struggles that life throws as we agree. Or a view into what is coming for those not there yet.

Solid acting and good story line. Ex fighter with estranged daughter has traveled down a rabbit hole with no options apart from fighting. Things falling apart at work and his daughter getting into trouble at school, dad's left with no option to take the hard choices that are on offer.. Namely shia labeouf and his Irish roots. The dirty side of life and dodgy dealings can only lead to bad decisions.

A great watch when you have a couple of hours but needs your full attention....

Really great film!

This is not a film I would normally watch, but I was so drawn to the cast. They have incredible actors for what appears to be first time directors. The film itself was poignant, sensitive and yet gritty. The characters were all very endearing in their own way and the acting is phenomenal. The mood of the film was quiet and brooding, and possibly a bit slow for some. I dont think everyone with get it, its quite art house, but i loved how it sat with you, and stays.

I thought the music reflected the story beautifully, overall a really heart felt film that personifies parenting and true friendship.

Beautifully well written, a strong gripping emotional drama

This movie just hits you in tha heart man... you do not expect the ending, and it is a heartbreaking one for sure. If you need a good cry go for it but gotta handle it !

"Salvable" isn't a film for the faint of heart. It delves into the complexities of loss, grief, and the fragility of life with an unflinching honesty. While the emotional journey can be challenging, it is also deeply rewarding. This is a film that demands your attention and your empathy, and in return, it offers a profound and unforgettable cinematic experience. If you're seeking a film that will stay with you long after the credits roll, a film that will provoke thought and perhaps even elicit a cathartic release, then "Salvable" is undoubtedly worth watching. Just be prepared to handle the emotional weight of its powerful and unforgettable conclusion. It's a cinematic punch to the heart, delivered with grace and devastating effectiveness.

Gritty, Emotional Knockout, Salvable Is a Must-Watch

Salvable isn't your typical boxing movie, it's something far more powerful, an emotionally rich drama that hits far deeper than the ring. It's a slow-burner, yes, but once it pulls you in, it doesn't let go.

Co-directors Bjorn Franklin and Johnny Marchetta craft a raw, intimate portrait of an aging fighter trying to piece together a broken life. Franklin's writing is sharp and soulful, elevating the story beyond the familiar.

The film's atmosphere is thick with mood: the bleak, coastal weather, the rundown Welsh towns, the haunting score, all of it working together to create a sense of quiet desperation. Simon Plunket's beautiful cinematography captures every gritty detail with unflinching honesty, painting a world that feels lived-in and painfully real.

Toby Kebbell delivers a powerful, nuanced, deeply layered performance, but it's Shia LaBeouf's show-stealing turn as the protagonist's best friend, raw, magnetic, emotional and unforgettable The fight scenes are tight, grounded, and refreshingly realistic, avoiding the flashy excess of modern action films. But this isn't about the fights, it's about the fight within. By the end, the emotional weight is overwhelming. There were tears in the theatre, and not just from the women!!

Salvable is a beautifully crafted, emotionally devastating film that demands your full attention. Don't miss it.

Raw in places and more to come ...

Yes it is raw in places especially if you have had similar experiences - more true to life than fiction. Toby shows his talent as an actor from one extreme to another with a chiselled jaw that has the cameraman drooling ! The gritty cinematography adds drama and atmosphere with some excellent scenes while the thread of the storyline goes from extreme caring to recklessness and it's not over yet ....

There is nothing in the film world that hasn't been done before and I have seen films on a similar theme but they haven't left me days later worrying about the future of the believable characters in it !

I commend the film for its production / direction / cinematography which is the height of professionalism and deserves awards.

Salvable - not just another boxing film

This film shook me - I was nervous that it was a boxing film but the fighting scenes were well filmed and powerful - the film made me think deeply - it was beautifully filmed with stunning colours and focus and whilst there were great boxing scenes which felt authentic and real it was so much more than yet another boxing film -the scenes between Shia LaBoeuf and Toby Kebbel were mesmerising and surprising - Toby was outstanding - the film is serious - it's not a superficial watch - but it's thought provoking, sad and stunning with great acting and superb cinematography- which reminded me of a painting - definitely a good watch.
