Canneseries Beta Film Buzz Title ‘A Better Man’ Unpacked by Its Stars, ‘Kon Tiki’s’ Anders Baasmo, Ingrid Giæver from ‘Dreams’ (Exclusive)
Image
“A Better Man,” backed by Norway’s Nrk, a byword these days for adventurous shows, has a first teaser, which sets out he set-up for one of the major buzz titles set to world premiere this weekend in Canneseries competition.

Produced by Maipo (“The Crossing”), which won big at Canneseries’ first edition with “State of Happiness,” “A Better Man” excels – like some other of the series which will bow at Canneseries over April 24-29 – in its large relevance, drilling down on Internet trolling, the cancel culture and men’s notions of masculinity. It’s also brief, as many series shorten, just four episodes. But its issues are wrapped in what becomes a social survival thriller. Most important, it’s also often touching.

Beta Film, which handles international distribution, has just dropped a teaser which presents the miniseries’ basic set-up.

Netflix Viewers Can't Get Enough of New Swedish Limited Series With 86% Rt Score
Image
Netflix has been treating subscribers to many original films and shows, both in English and foreign languages. Most recently, a lot of foreign productions have attracted subscribers.

Netflix's Squid Game is the streamer's most popular title so far, and in recent months, several new releases have become so popular they joined the Top 10 Most Popular lists, like the action film Ad Vitam and the disaster limited series La Palma. Its success with foreign titles was highlighted this week with two new titles: the Dutch thriller iHostage, and the limited series The Glass Dome. Per Tudum, the Nordic noir Swedish series The Glass Dome has caught the eye of millions of subscribers.

The Glass Dome premiered on Netflix on Apr. 15 and immediately entered the charts. For the week between Apr. 14 and 20, the Swedish series debuted in second place on the global charts. It received 9.2 million views and 42.6 million hours viewed. The Glass...

Netflix's Underrated Military Action Film Has Unnoticeably Joined the Streamer's Prestigious List
Image
Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services, and its influence continues. Although its original titles haven't always won the hearts of the critics, they have attracted millions of views on the platform.

The streamer has released many popular titles in the last few months, and many of them jumped on its prestigious "Most Popular" list. Now, it's Counterattack's turn, its new addition to the military-action genre. The Mexican action thriller is the latest title to join Netflix's Most Popular Movies in Non-English, per Tudum.

Counterattack, or Contraataque in Spanish, premiered on Netflix on Mar. 4. The action thriller was a massive success in its first week between Mar. 3 and 9, debuting at the top of the global charts for Movies in a foreign language with 22.1 million views and 31.3 million hours viewed.

Its reign continued, and during the week between Mar. 31 to Apr. 6, Counterattack already joined Netflix's Most Popular Non-English...

Cameron Diaz Proves She's Still a Major Star as Her Latest Movie Joins a Prestigious List
Image
Netflix is one of the largest streaming services, and, aside from having other licensed titles on its platform, it has also created a name as a studio. Its titles often feature high-profile actors, and despite some of them not often enchanting both the critics and the audience, the streamer has had an amazing few months.

One of the titles that received major success recently is Cameron Diaz's Back in Action. The action comedy, which stars Diaz and Jamie Foxx as retired spies, also comes with a tongue-in-cheek reference to the actress' long break from acting. Per Tudum, the break didn't stop her from continuing to be one of the biggest action stars, as Back in Action joined Netflix's prestigious Most Popular Movies list.

Diaz's last film was 2014's Annie, and then she took a break to focus on her personal life. Her co-star, Foxx, persuaded her to come back to acting,...

How Much Did Squid Game 2 Contribute To Netflix’s 2024 Q2 Viewing? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Netflix has solidified its position as the leading streaming platform, consistently drawing in millions of viewers worldwide. With an extensive library of original content, the platform continues to expand its influence, producing blockbuster films, binge-worthy TV series, and globally successful non-English titles. One of the biggest contributors to Netflix’s global rise was Squid Game, the South Korean survival drama that took the world by storm in 2021.

The series became a cultural phenomenon, breaking records and introducing millions of new viewers to international content. Naturally, expectations were high for Squid Game Season 2, which premiered on December 26, 2024. Despite being Netflix’s most-watched series in the year’s second half, it surprisingly accounted for only 0.7% of total Netflix viewing. While this may seem low, it points to the fact that Netflix does not rely on just a few major hits.

Jason Bateman and Taron Egerton in Bagagem de Risco (2024)
Netflix | Rebel Ridge was watched over 30m more times than Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F
Jason Bateman and Taron Egerton in Bagagem de Risco (2024)
Subscribers to Netflix love such original thrillers as Carry-On and Rebel Ridge, it seems, with the films receiving even higher viewing numbers than Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.

Netflix has released its viewership figures for the second half of 2024, and they provide a (possibly) interesting bit of insight into its subscribers’ tastes.

The most obvious take-away is that Netflix customers really like their thrillers; festive airport nailbiter Carry-On, starring Taron Edgerton, continues to be one of the most successful original films the streaming firm has released in years. Despite releasing right at the end of last year, it was still the platform’s most-watched movie with 137.3m views.

In January, Carry-On was Netflix’s fifth most-watched movie of all time. A few weeks on, and it’s climbed to the third position with a total of 169.2m views, placing it just behind Don’t Look Up (171.4m) and Red Notice (230.9m). Releasing a high-concept,...

Netflix Releases List of Most Watched Movies and Series of Second Half of 2024

For data nerds – it’s our favorite time of the year – the second half of 2024 viewing data has just been released! We’ve got a lot more to come, but what are the most-watched movies and series of the second half of the year? Let’s dive straight in.

What are the key points that Netflix has cited as being the most important for this data drop? Netflix reiterated that Engagement (time spent watching) is the best metric to gauge member satisfaction and that this data drop covers ~99% of all video watch time on Netflix and that no single title accounts for more than 1% of total Netflix viewing.

Squid Game S2 had the most hours viewed (0.7% of total viewing), and their total watch time for this period of July to December 2024 was 94B hours (5% increase YoY). Their most-viewed series was Squid Game S2 (87M views) despite premiering only 6 days before year-end.

Image
Netflix subscribers streamed more content than ever in the back half of 2024 — and the second season of Korean hit drama “Squid Game” was the biggest TV show on the service.

The streamer’s customers watched more than 94 billion hours on Netflix in the second half of last year, a 5% increase year over year, according to its latest Engagement Report sharing data on what people watched on from July-December 2024.

“Squid Game” Season 2, despite premiering on Dec. 26 with only six days left in the year, dominated the period as Netflix’s most-viewed series with nearly 87 million views. That said, no single title accounts for more than 1% of total viewing on Netflix. For example, “Squid Game 2” represented only 0.7% of global viewing for the time period. Christmas week brought a bounty of viewing to streaming platforms, with eight titles crossing the billion-minute mark in Nielsen’s streaming ratings. Netflix’s Squid Game, however, stood well apart from the pack.

The Korean hit posted the highest single-week viewing tally for any streaming title in the United States in 2024 with 4.92 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Dec. 23-29. Season two of Squid Game premiered Dec. 26.

The show’s premiere week was the best for any title in two years, in fact — since Wednesday delivered about 5.3 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Nov. 28-Dec. 4, 2022. Squid Game also smashed its own previous high of 3.26 billion minutes during season one’s run in 2021. Streaming Ratings: ‘The Traitors’ Scores Series High With Season 3 Premiere

The Traitors is becoming more than just a cult favorite.

The competition series opened its third season with its largest viewing numbers to date: It registered 499 million minutes of viewing on Peacock for the week of Jan. 6-12, based on preliminary Nielsen streaming figures. Season three premiered on Jan. 9. (Nielsen’s streaming figures include all episodes of a show, so some of that time came from prior seasons.)

That’s a series high for The Traitors, whose previous best showing in Nielsen’s streaming ratings was 402 million minutes the week after its season two premiere in January 2024. It’s also the best premiere week for any Peacock unscripted series to date and was the top unscripted show in the United States last week across all platforms.

Full streaming ratings for Jan. 6-12 from Nielsen will be released in a few weeks, per the ratings service’s agreement with streaming platforms.

Christmas action films, Red One and Carry-On, topped the streaming charts in December
Image
‘Twas the season to be thrilled with action. As people settled in and got cozy with their kith and kin this past Christmas, sometimes watching classics like Home Alone, A Christmas Story and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation just isn’t enough. Many viewers checked out some newer movies that incorporated action with their holiday theme. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Dwayne Johnson’s Red One on Prime Video became a big hit in homes after its brief theatrical run that grossed $186 million globally. His Santa action flick would be followed by Netflix’s Carry-On, which stars Taron Edgerton as a Tsa agent working on Christmas Eve when he’s faced with a terrorist plot.

Red One faced much criticism for its content, but the newest live-action film from megastar Dwayne Johnson topped the streaming charts in December with 2.1 billion minutes of viewing. Meanwhile, while finishing in second overall, Carry-On was...

If You Loved 'La Palma,' You'll Adore 'The Impossible'
Image
Netflix’s recent miniseries La Palma explored the aftermath of a volcanic eruption on the eponymous Canary Island, where there have been eruptions from the Cumbre Vieja volcano in real life — most recently, in 2021. The series examines how an explosion would affect both the people of La Palma as well as tourists, and the way that the characters are developed is strong, even if the natural disaster storyline itself is a little predictable. But while a lot of people have been watching La Palma, the show hasn't been doing too well with critics.

It’s difficult to watch the series without thinking of another natural disaster story — the 2012 film The Impossible. This movie centered around the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and was a lot more rooted in fact than La Palma. Starring Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, as well as an early instance of Tom Holland’s acting career, The Impossible...

6 Netflix shows that are guaranteed to make 2025 great
Image
2024 was another good year for Netflix, but not the best year ever. For instance, the streamer had just one movie get a lot of nominations for Golden Globes. We know the streaming giant will do even better in the future.

Thankfully, the Netflix Original series have never been disappointing. Maybe viewers do not love every show (La Palma has gotten some hate), but there are enough that get renewed that we cannot wait to watch a new season. Sometimes, Netflix makes us wait too long, though.

Such is the case with the first show on the list below. Still, even if we say we have lost interest, once the show is released in 2025, everyone knows we will tune back in. In fact, we should watch all of the following six shows.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Hits A Fantastic Milestone, Becoming The Number One On Disney Plus Worldwide
Image
According to third-party analytics, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has broken a fantastic milestone - becoming the number one TV show on Disney+ worldwide. 2024 was a rough year for Star Wars, with The Acolyte - intended to serve as a spectacular relaunch for the franchise - instead leaving the fandom divided. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew failed to hit the streaming top 10 in the U.S., leading to some concern the show won't get the renewal it deserves.

The latest third-party analytics from Flix Patrol reveal the show is improving in terms of performance, though. Skeleton Crew is ranked the number 1 Disney+ TV show or movie worldwide for January 2 - and the viewership trend is exciting, because it ranks higher than movies like Deadpool & Wolverine. Even more pleasing, though, is the viewership trend over the last week - as seen on Flix Patrol's metrics.

It's worth noting that Skeleton Crew had massive...

New Netflix Disaster Show Climbs Streaming Chart Despite 29% Audience Score
Image
Netflix's latest disaster show is trending on a new streaming chart despite a weak reception from audiences. Stories of disaster, both real and fictional, have tended to find an audience on Netflix. Society of the Snow, from director J.J. Bayona, was the third most-watched Netflix film for the first half of 2024. The drama unfolds in 1972, focusing on the true story of a Uruguayan rugby team's experience in 1972 and their ordeal after a flight crashed in the Andes Mountains.

Under Paris was also not too far behind as the fourth most-watched film during that same period. Directed by Xavier Gens, who wrote the script with Yannick Dahan, Maud Heywang, Yaël Langmann and Olivier Torres, the French film centered on a grieving marine biologist who has to save Paris from a giant shark. As the new year begins, though, a miniseries, with only four episodes, is showing signs of success.

‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Sets Netflix Premiere Week Viewing Record
Image
The first season of Squid Game is the biggest show in Netflix’s history. Season two is shaping up to be just as huge.

The Korean hit drew a record-high number of views over its opening weekend, the streamer says. Internal figures from Netflix show Squid Game season two racking up 68 million views worldwide (as measured by the total viewing hours, 487.6 million, divided by its run time of 7 hours, 10 minutes) in the four days after its Dec. 26 premiere. That smashes the previous week-one record set by Wednesday (50.1 million views) in November 2022.

The show’s first four days of release have already put season two on Netflix’s all-time top 10 for non-English language series: It currently ranks seventh, just behind part two of Lupin (68.4 million views). Another week of viewing will likely move Squid Game season two into second place on the list, behind only season one. Netflix’s all-time top...

'La Palma' fans will find reactions on Rotten Tomatoes hilarious
Image
You either love it or hate it. La Palma, that is. The show about a family trying to get authorities to do something to prepare for the impending doom of a natural disaster that could cause millions to be injured has divided viewers.

Because we live in the world we do, and most human beings have a computer where they can use their words to express to the rest of us how they feel about a certain subject (much like I am doing right now with you), people can log in to their favorite review site and post some thoughts. The ones on Rotten Tomatoes might make La Palma fans angry. Or maybe give them a laugh.

Oddly, there are only three professional reviews. Maybe critics simply do not want to take the time to write about every Netflix series. There are a lot of them and a lot of them are pretty good.

Netflix’s Thrilling New Disaster Series ‘La Palma’ Has a Nightmare Concept, but Could It Actually Happen?
Image
Netflix's disaster series, La Palma, offers up a truly terrifying premise. Following a Norwegian family on holiday to La Palma, an island next to Tenerife, a scientist discovers that a crack in the island's surface is widening, with a domino effect leading to the island's volcano equivalent to the size of Manhattan collapsing into the sea. With planes crashing due to the ash, and massive tsunami waves being created, which characters in La Palma describe as the worst natural disaster humanity has faced, the stakes of the scenario are sky-high, even if the more personal character moments feel slightly lacking in weight or logic.

‘Carry-On’ Closes In On Netflix All-Time Top 10 As ‘Virgin River’s Return Takes Top Weekly TV Spot
Image
Carry-On, a film about traveling through the airport at Christmas, is on course to break into Netflix’s top ten films of all time.

The thriller, which stars Taron Egerton, Jason Bateman, and Sofia Carson, bested its performance last week by adding another 55M views on top of last week’s 42M number. It remains number one on Netflix’s weekly film charts, having already become Netflix’s biggest launch of a film this year.

Given that it has scored 97M views in its first ten days, Carry-On, which was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and produced by Amblin Partners, it could well enter Netflix’s top ten films of all time. The Dark Lisa Kudrow & Ray Romano Comedy Series Blowing Up Netflix's Top Charts
Image
Streaming audiences have been all over the place with their holiday viewing this year. Instead of non-stop Christmas classics, we've seen Megan Fox sci-fi thrillers dominating Netflix's charts, and Gerard Butler-led crime thrillers taking over the Max rankings. That said, viewers have still managed to squeeze in some traditional holiday fare amid all the crime and sci-fi stuff, with Prime Video audiences propelling Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1996 Christmas comedy "Jingle All the Way" to the top of that streamer's charts. But even as the festive classics surface for the season, our collective appetite for darker offerings appears to be insatiable, as a new Netflix comedy drama series has managed to stand out amid the holiday stream-fest.

Back in 2022, "Dead to Me" creator Liz Feldman signed on to helm new Netflix series "No Good Deed," and now the show has finally arrived. It seems it was worth the wait, too,...

'Virgin River' Season 6 is Netflix's No.1 Streaming TV Show
Image
Netflix is bucking one of their most hated trends in a big way with the romantic drama Virgin River. While the streamer has gained itself a reputation for prematurely canceling many series too early, the early Season 7 renewal of Virgin River made it the platform's longest running original drama series ever.

Season 6 arrived on December 19, but fans already knew that the show has another 10 episodes coming sometime next year thanks to Netflix putting a lot of faith in the series and granting it an early renewal back in October. Now, with the sixth season scoring a huge win on the streamer’s TV chart, overtaking other trending shows such as La Palma and No Good Deed, it seems that Netflix’s decision is one that is going to really pay off in the long-term.

With Season 7 guaranteed, Virgin River overtakes House of Cards and The Crown, which both ended after six seasons,...

Anders Baasmo, Alma Günther, and Ingrid Bolsø Berdal in Inferno em La Palma (2024)
Reality and Fantasy Collide in Netflix’s Volcanic Thriller ‘La Palma’
Anders Baasmo, Alma Günther, and Ingrid Bolsø Berdal in Inferno em La Palma (2024)
Netflix’s latest drama, “La Palma,” has gripped audiences worldwide with its powerful depiction of a volcanic disaster. While the show has grown in popularity, it raises crucial considerations about scientific truth and the distinction between entertainment and realism in disaster stories.

Produced in Norway, “La Palma” has swiftly become one of Netflix’s most popular shows. The series tells different stories of a cataclysmic volcanic catastrophe in La Palma, one of Spain’s Canary Islands. A central plot revolves around a Norwegian family—Jennifer, Fredrik, and their children, Sara and Tobias—whose vacation transforms into a deadly battle for survival. Another thread follows Marie, a young geologist who finds early warning signals of an impending eruption at the island’s Cumbre Vieja volcano.

Real-world occurrences and scientific arguments inspire the show. La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted in 2021, causing substantial property destruction but no fatalities during its three-month eruption.

Image
Warning! This post contains minor spoilers for La Palma and The Impossible.

Netflix's brand-new trending miniseries La Palma is a perfect reminder to watch Ewan McGregor and Tom Holland's 2012 disaster movie The Impossible. La Palma was just released on Netflix on December 12th, 2024, and it is already among the platform's best-performing recent additions. The cast of La Palma features a host of Norwegian actors, some seasoned and others brand-new, and the miniseries is therefore dubbed in English.

Netflix Disaster Series 'La Palma' Takes the #1 Spot Despite Audience Reactions
Image
An unexpected (and now largely panned) TV series has exploded into the #1 spot on Netflix’s top 10. The limited series, which was released earlier this month with little fanfare, is titled La Palma and follows a Norwegian family who, while vacationing on the titular island, suddenly find themselves fighting for survival amid a natural disaster. La Palma has taken the streaming platform by storm, beating out the likes of Lisa Kudrow and Ray Romano’s dark comedy series No Good Deed, Jamie Foxx’s stand-up special Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was..., and the critical hit spy thriller series Black Doves.

Created by Martin Sundland, Lars Gudmestad, and Harald Rosenløw-Eeg, La Palma stars Ingrid Bolsø Berdal (Cold Prey), Anders Baasmo (Welcome to Norway), Alma Günther (Another Happy Christmas), Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and Thea Sofie Loch Næss (The Last Kingdom), and is only four episodes long, making it perfect for binge-watching.
