“Carry-On” and “Squid Game” Season 2 were Netflix’s most-watched movie and show, respectively, during the second half of 2024.

Despite only debuting on Dec. 5, “Carry-On” logged 137.3 million views during the month, and ranked as the most-watched movie on the streamer from July to December 2024. The streamer shared the metrics in its bi-annual data dump. Viewership for “Carry-On” exceeded that of “The Union,” which was the second most-watched movie during the interval with 131.1 million views, as well as “Rebel Ridge,” which took third place with 129 million views.

Viewership for “Carry-on,” “The Union” and “Rebel Ridge” well exceeded that of other movies on the streamer, with “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” coming in fourth place with 97.1 million views while “Our Little Secret,” which was released in late November, took fifth place with 81.3 million views.

With the second installment debuting Dec. 26 on Netflix, “Squid Game” drew 4.92 billion minutes over its two seasons in the interval between Dec. 23 to Dec. 29. Viewership for “Squid Game” was more than double that of Netflix’s “Virgin River,” which scored a whopping 2.25 billion viewing minutes as the second most-watched streaming program of the week.

Dwayne Johnson-led “Red One” also scored an impressive streaming viewership as the holiday movie scored 1.81 billion viewing minutes on Prime Video during the week, clocking in as the third most-watched program of the week. The competition series opened its third season with its largest viewing numbers to date: It registered 499 million minutes of viewing on Peacock for the week of Jan. 6-12, based on preliminary Nielsen streaming figures. Season three premiered on Jan. 9. (Nielsen’s streaming figures include all episodes of a show, so some of that time came from prior seasons.)

That’s a series high for The Traitors, whose previous best showing in Nielsen’s streaming ratings was 402 million minutes the week after its season two premiere in January 2024. It’s also the best premiere week for any Peacock unscripted series to date and was the top unscripted show in the United States last week across all platforms.

Full streaming ratings for Jan. 6-12 from Nielsen will be released in a few weeks, per the ratings service’s agreement with streaming platforms.

Netflix’s recent miniseries La Palma explored the aftermath of a volcanic eruption on the eponymous Canary Island, where there have been eruptions from the Cumbre Vieja volcano in real life — most recently, in 2021. The series examines how an explosion would affect both the people of La Palma as well as tourists, and the way that the characters are developed is strong, even if the natural disaster storyline itself is a little predictable. But while a lot of people have been watching La Palma, the show hasn't been doing too well with critics.

Season 2’s success has also caused Netflix subscribers to return to its first installment. “Squid Game” Season 1 scored 13.6 million views during the week of Dec. 30, putting it as No. 2 on Netflix’s non-English TV charts.

Society of the Snow, from director J.J. Bayona, was the third most-watched Netflix film for the first half of 2024. The drama unfolds in 1972, focusing on the true story of a Uruguayan rugby team's experience in 1972 and their ordeal after a flight crashed in the Andes Mountains.

Under Paris was also not too far behind as the fourth most-watched film during that same period.
