Animation could be a lot better

I have not finished watching this series yet, but the animation of the characters is distractingly bad, so bad I felt like expressing my displeasure here. This is really just related to the expressions of the characters. The rendering looks very decent otherwise, but, I swear, ReBoot, a 3D animated series exactly 30 years old, the second such ever, has much better facial expressions and mouth movements. How can that be the case in 2024? Otherwise from that, the voice acting, action and pacing is pretty good, but I hope the production company fixes the glaring weakness in subsequent iterations.

The good, the bad and the Netflix

I just finished watching the first season of Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance (2024-) and while this show was decent at best, I was also very disappointed as a Gundam fan. Then again, this show was made by Netflix, so I shouldn't be surprised.

Positives for Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance (2024-): I thought it was an interesting angle for this show to have the Principality of Zeon as the heroes and the Gundam Mobile Suit as the villain. There were some good characters interacts in between the action set pieces. And finally, you do get some great action sequences in these six episodes.

Negatives for Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance (2024-): This show suffers from the same issues as almost any movie or tv show made by Netflix. First off, I didn't feel like I got to know a lot about these characters. This season only has 6 episodes and it felt rushed. And finally, the show does the bare minimum like a lot of other Netflix projects.

Overall, Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance (2024-) was a good enough anime that can be improved upon in future season, but I'm starting to get very annoyed with Netflix now.

Bad CGI, wrtting and lipsync.

I am a huge Gundam fan, so it's sad to see how bad this one is, but again it's Netflix so wasn't expect much.

The CGI is really bad, like we had better CGI movies 5 or 7 years ago, this looks more like cut scenes from a PS3 game. It's not helped along by the bad lipsync or that it was made with English mouth movement in mind instead of Japanese, as only a tourist would choose the English option.

It's also got all the modern DEI thinks to check of, which is something you will notice really fast, and given it's something that means lower quality in the story and work in generel I would say they don't break that mold here. They even use the classic "touch girl" hair style we are seeing every time now, so when ever people I know and myself sees the half bold haircut we tend to write the show of then and there as they all go the same way anyway.

The sounds the Zaku used seems off when you are used to them sounding in pretty unique way. I don't know why they changed it here.

The ending is... well it's bad, I don't know why they don't focus test their shows, or at least hire fans to make them. We have seen with One Piece that it can be done, if they listen to the creator and have fans working on it without change everything to please the modern none existing audience.

I can't really give it more than 2 stars, as I see many trying to pump up the scor, and because it's not really that good even if you could look past the nightmare inducing CGI.

Pretty cool. Amazing Graphics.

Not a fan of Gundam, so watching this on a whim... as it came into my recommended movies list on Netflix.

I have to say, the animation is made up of very detailed images , photo realistic at times. I actually thought it was a mixed action + CGI type film at one point a the beginning. Amazing visuals.

The movement of the characters is a bit comic like or weird.. and the voices used for the actors are all over the show.

As far as the storyline, obviously some cliche scenes etc. From episode one I can figure out what the plot line will be for the series.

Other than that, l it looks decent enough (i'm only half way through it) Will update my rating later,.

The good the bad and the ugly . Gundam fan

So this really is a mixed bag. Overall I'm very happy it was made but disappointed.

There are some very strong points such as the animation the fight sequences the level of detail i like the main character who is a very strong female lead without being a mary sue.

There are some very weak points such as the actual dialogue which fluctuates between well thought out episodes with realistic dialogue and other episodes that sound like they were written by chat gpt .

There is a level of modernism that is thrown into this which is completely unnecessary and attracts from it.

The accents are all over the place which normally compliments Gundam films and TV shows but in this case was poorly chosen and makes no sense.

The middle half of it felt very weak and lackluster where is the beginning and ending was phenomenal. Episodes 1-2 and 6 held up to the original Gundam films. Where is episodes 3 through 5 varied from g gundam level of sillyness to some well done scenes.

As far as the mobile suits various armor and fight scenes very well done. They do overpower the Gundam which I think was silly and change the face. But it's much better than a lot of the UC spin-offs we have.

I do hope they make some video games with this assets.

Strenths Base story Set design and details Battle sequence Strong female lead Didn't red con anything Solid voice acting

Weak points Silly secondary characters Overpowered Gundam Bad dialogue written by chat GPT or poorly translated Filler episodes Modern political discourse injected which has nothing to do with Gundam or anti war gundam themes.

On the one hand I'm happy for anything uc thats new. But this very easily could have been much better with a little editing and a little better writing.... I'm convinced if you cut this down from 3 hours to an hour and a half and used ai to change some lines and add some it would actually A+ film . But its not . Worth watching for any Gundam fan not sure for anybody else.

first 2 episodes are amazing; rest slogs on

The first 2 episodes are incredible. The action is superb and ruthless. The depiction of the Gundam was like an unstoppable entity of warfare horror and I loved it. I found it difficult not to root for it. What helped this was that no identity of the pilot was given until the second to last episode; and the voice acting in this movie is a bit cringe, the characterizations even more so, exacerbated by the subpar CGI of faces. Whereas the effects excelled in the suits and combat, they failed with the people. I found this passable though; for episodes 1, 2, and 4. Episode 3 was a yawnfest and the last 2 episodes, while having some good action, were crippled by awful plot twists and revelations. Barring spoilers, I won't get into it, but...laughably bad. Nonetheless, a fun series to enjoy parts of if you like mecha.

I liked it.

I'm seeing a lot of reviewers panning this show due to their preconceived notions of what it should have been. I fornone like having the perspective of Zeon troops being hunted by the Gundam. You get glimpses of what it's like to go against a hero character, and what it takes to overcome just one.

It was done in Unreal Engine 5, which means a lot of the environmental CGI can look photo realistic at times. On the other hand, they did not take the time to really work on the human character models skin and facial expressions, so it sometimes is a stark contrast to the environmental scenery. Overall, it wasn't a deal breaker for me and it was nice to see a more realistic Gundam work than a traditional animation.

A little background of the one year war

The repblic of ZEON(protagonist's side in this series) is a fascist regime.

They killed about 3 billion of space colony civilians whom they swore to liberate with gas in the first 40 hours of the war.

Then they threw a space colony which weights about 600 to 1500 million tons to earth, that killed another 300 million directly.

After signing an agreement of not using WMD with the earth federation government, they tried to nuke another space colony to stop earth federation's mobile suit project.

ALL of the above are not possible without Zeon's cutting edge mobile suit--ZAKU.

Then in the first episode, "they've saved more lives than you can imagine".

A long time fan dream come true!!!

Im surprise there is no review yet for this amazing series, so I'm gonna start the ball rolling here. This series presents a refreshing, "down-to-earth" perspective on the Gundam universe, offering a grounded look at the human cost of war rather than the usual large-scale strategic warfare that many fans may expect.

The story deviates from the typical tactical war games that have become a hallmark of the franchise. Instead, it focuses more on the human element-the tragedies and chaos that arise from conflict. Admittedly, there are moments when the characters seem unsure of what to do, which can pull the viewer out of the immersion. Still, despite these occasional lapses, the narrative remains engaging and binge-worthy, a testament to the creator's vision. Notably, this is the first mainline Gundam series produced by a Western team, which makes the achievement all the more impressive.

One of the standout features of this series is the battle scenes. The mobile suits feel massive and imposing, with their movements and speed depicted in a way that's both believable and thrilling. This is the most "grounded" portrayal of mobile suit combat since Gundam Thunderbolt, and it surpasses even that in terms of realism. However, while the fight sequences are excellent, the character animation could use some improvement. I'm hopeful that with a larger budget in future seasons, this aspect will see significant enhancement.

For newcomers to the Gundam universe, there may be some terminology that doesn't quite resonate, but the core story is simple enough to enjoy without prior knowledge. Overall, I'd rate this series a solid 8/10-an impressive achievement and a worthy addition to the Gundam franchise.

Worst Gundam Anime Ever

This is definitely the most childish Gundam animation I have ever seen. The core of Gundam is anti-war. In the original gundam, Zeon killed billions of innocent people with poison gas and landing colonial satellites with Zakus. However, it is said in the show that Zaku saved a lof of lives It's simply an insult to the original Gundam. And the subsequent plot puts Zeon in the position of a victim, which is simply unreasonable.

The writer not only doesn't understand Gundam but also doesn't understand military affairs. The protagonist tells Gundam not to continue attacking at the end, but she hasn't stopped killing people in previous battles, so Zeon can only kill people but not the Federation? What is the logic of this?

Great anime even for people who aren't familiar with gundam

I'll be honest, I tried watching original Gundam and couldn't get into it. However, as someone who doesn't watch Gundam, I thought this series was incredibly well done. I've been wondering why animators don't use unreal engine or video game style dynamics, so when this came out I was pleasantly surprised. I've been watching animation for a long time, I prefer it over live action, and I can say with certainty that this is the most detailed and realistic animation made so far. I had to leave this review because all the negative people claiming this has terrible animation and unrealistic facial features. Truly, there is no animation on the market that has such incredibly detailed facial features. You can see so much texture in the characters faces, even very subtle things like veins, dirt smudges, old scars, and even the pores on their skin. I've watched all the best animations on Netflix and this is by far the most intricately detailed I've seen. Not to say this is my favorite by any means, but I really appreciate the time and energy the creators put into these characters to make them as realistic as possible. The dialog isn't the absolute best, and lip syncing isn't great, but overall this animation deserves more love then hate, because they really stepped outside the box with this one. I think the people leaving negative reviews either weren't paying attention at all, or they're just incapable of seeing small details. I know for a fact that no one can name an animation with more detailed and realistic features then this, whether it's 2D or 3D. It's just absurd to hate an animation for not having perfectly realistic facial features, because no animation in the world is "perfectly" realistic, but this one is the closest I've seen. People are just placing completely unrealistic expectations on this animation, because if you haven't noticed animation isn't exactly known for having realistic facial features and expressions; everything is exaggerated in anime. So let go of unrealistic expectations and just enjoy the show.

The series and story is amazing but the visuals...

I really love Gundam and have been watching and playing with it since the 80's.

But I have an extremely hard time trying to enjoy this due to the absolute wonky and amateur looking visuals.

As if they hired a company that only showed them pictures of what it could look like and the character facial details which looked amazing. So they accepted them for doing the visuals and never asked for actual movies scenes and just released it with full confidence.

I mean the characters look, act and behave so unrealistically.

Especially their facial expressions... It's just a pain to watch and only those that don't care about visuals would be able to enjoy this.

I'd rather listen to this as if it's an audio book then expose myself to these horrific visual.

Ignore the negative reviews

Want a great Gundam show? It's here.

Everything that defines Gundam is included in interesting, sometimes new and very entertaining ways. There's no long exposition heavy scenes, the flow of the show is consistent and engaging across all 6 episodes. Every episode hits, no fillers.

I loved the abundance of references to lore and Easter eggs deployed here.

I struggle to come up with any areas where the show falls short. Any negativity you read about this show will be from non Gundam fans. Which maybe that is a pitfall. Though my wife, not a Gundam fan loved it, I think an appreciation and viewing of previous series is a prerequisite to understanding the greatness of this show.

Characters are not super deep but then again they don't need to be. Every archetype of character from previous shows is represented. We've seen these types before and so heavy characterization wasn't necessary.

Love, Death & Mechs

Enjoyed this very much. Inspite of knowing very little about the Gundam franchise I was able to engage the story and got attached to the characters very quickly. I felt transported to the Eastern front and effectively "dropped in" with the Red Wolves. The tough female protagonists made the story feel less predictable helping to eschew the clumsy machismo that often comes with military shows. The mech battles did not disappoint and the classic designs were fun to see in a computer animation style. While the motion capture doesn't seem to have progressed much since the Captain Harlock movie the human character designs were very interesting and added a lot of depth to thier personas; these would make teriffic cosplay costumes. I really hope to see more from the Gundam series in this style perhaps exploring the background of some of the more central protagonists.

Good, satisfactory, truthful to the original.

Not a fan of the human animation, the rest of it is spectacular. The fighting scenes are awesome.

Watch it in Japanese, lip sync is made for japanese dialogue. And English voice over is awful.

A solid 8, expected much worse from Netflix, but was very good.

Pure nostalgia and they were faithful to the spirit and message of Gundam, war is terrible, everyone suffers, dehumanizing the other only leads to becoming monsters ourselves, soldiers die for no glory, everyone loses and we all want peace.

It respects the lore, it doesn't add unnecessary dumb stuff for the imaginary "modern audiences".

For that I praise it. Hope there is more incoming.

Attack of the Gundam-sized clichés

6 Episodes stock-full of clichés, devoid of backstory, lacking any real character development and battle scenes that pretty much all look the same. The story is about as dull and generic a war story as I have ever seen.

There is honestly very little here in terms of redeeming qualities. I was tempted to give one star, but some of the visuals are relatively pretty - not so much the characters, who are overly glossy in appearance and stiffly animated, like video game characters from about 10 years ago, but the landscapes at least. Sadly, that is the best I can say about this show. I'd be incredibly surprised if somebody decided to give this a second season.

Good idea. Bad execution.

I'm a major gundam fan and this show was a honestly a disappointment. The concept of showing these events from the regular soldiers point of view was a great idea in my opinion. I like that it shows the struggles of war in a more dark tone than gundam normally does.

This is definitely not a children's Gundam side story, it's rated MA for a reason. Just putting this here incase a parent didn't realize.

As far as the bad goes: I really did not like the animation style. It's one of those weird attempts at trying to make animation look more like live action and it just doesn't work. I don't like how the MC contradicts her morals for the writers to try and make her look like a beacon of morality. This is kind of a theme throughout, you can tell it was written for western audiences. I also don't like the heavy plot armor to keep the show going. I would rather have seen some of the main characters fall. It would have made the story more realistic. It's hard to explain well without spoilers, but there's many situations where atleast one of them should have either made a sacrifice for the team or fell heroically, etc. Not doing so took all the weight of the decisions away and makes everything feel pretty pointless. Most good war movies show this because it's important to make the characters actions feel important. I feel like MC should have been like the only one to survive the horror which could have fundamentally altered her view of humanity.

Overall I like the base idea, but the executive was pretty bad imo.

I have tgive it 10 is stead of 7.5-8.5 because of some tourist who doesn't know Gundam serires I give it 1.to balance the actual show score. The show itself decen fun. The Gundam series.originally written since.1979. So it warfare are heavy relies on WW2 warfare infromation. Aside from that the show was great, War scene are exciting especially after the Gundam show up. Some tourist may find disturb about girl boss charactor but originally Gundam serires itself full of girl boss charactor. Like Haman Karn,Mirai Yashima,Sayla Mass, wanna be girl boss Fraw Bow,Kycilia Zabi.etc Due to some of them are born noble, relative of high rank millatary men or hold high rank in millitary they are all become girl boss. So either you make peace with it or don't watch it. The world of mobile suit doesn't matter you men or wemen if you are skill you can become pilot and protaginise of story(even if you have mental iilness hair cut).

Entertaining spectacle with decent story

I'm giving it an 8 because it was entertaining and enjoyable enough to want to keep watching more after each episode. The animation had some scenes that were truly breathtaking and captured the feeling of mecha combat in all its glory. It also had some scenes that were very noticeably not modeled thoroughly, but they weren't many.

I would say to maybe not expect an amazing Gundam series, but I felt it captured enough of the feeling to make it a pretty amazing animation for me.

My main takeaways was that the show was given too few episodes at only 6, which made it hard to fully flesh out the narrative/story and that they had to rush some of the animation scenes. It did well with what it was given in my opinion and had enough epic scenes to make it worth watching.

Based on what I saw, a fully supported second season could take it to the level of greatness and I hope it gets one.
