Just saw the movie. First the movie is too long by probably a half hour. There is lots that could be cut to save time and make the movies pace better. I would have also appreciated more world building. There was a small blurb at the beginning but thats pretty much it. The mother is unlikable which I think is the point but it's too much for too little payoff. The step dad and his daughter are a breath of fresh air for the characters. The movie takes forever building up to the action which is at least good. There was a very cool dark action scene that I would have loved to have more of.

Overall it's too long too slow tells too much about stuff that doesn't matter and not enough about what does.

A good movie that could have been a great series with more characters. This is a post-apocalyptic film about a plague that forced humans to fight over farm land due to starvation and famine. A solid plot with great acting and lots of action.

This could have been a whole series or a limited series. The concept is very deep and I think the movie kind of limited the writing. I would have liked to see this in episode format. I mean the movie is so good that a series would have worked just as well or even better. Regardless, the family portrayed in this film is very diverse. The atmosphere is dark and the main character has a unique outlook on the situation. She treats her family like an army platoon. It's like they've gotten so accustomed to the despair and violence in the world they've learned to live with it by treating life like a mission. Even the kids have become soldiers.

40 Acres is advanced in how it treats familial, racial, and interpersonal traumas. One could look at this film as an allegorical reflection on the devastation ravaged by North American colonists towards multiple communities (i.e. Indigenous Canadians and enslaved Africans) and, while this is necessary to feel the full weight of these survivors' journeys, the genre bending and fast-paced sequences are so well-tailored that the thrills alone can carry the film.

These are survivors in the truest sense of the word, and it's not killing or laboring in the fields that gives them a hard time, it's learning how to build the trust to let others in.

40 Acres is a new Canadian, post apocalyptic......farm thriller?

The basic plot follows a family living on an isolated farm in the middle of rural Canada, several years after a mushroom pandemic, civil war and other weird stuff.

Society has fallen, and there are cannibals and raiders everywhere. A family of mixed ethnicity are now surviving, growing food on their farm, which is super important, all animals are now wiped out and farmland is a super hot commodity.

The movie is handsomely shot but it bounces around from dark humour, horror, a military movie, a family religious movie and a coming of age movie, oh and kidnapping movie.

It's almost like the director said to the writers "Hey you have all of this stuff in here. What kind of movie should this actually be?" And then they all said "Yes."

This is a textbook example of throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the wall, but what sticks actually does kind of work.

The movie is unique in that when it's the turn...things get worse for the characters....and then it gets worse......and then it gets worse...before being tied up in a nice little bow at the end.

At the end of the day, if you gave me this film's budget and actors and told me to go with god, this isn't the movie that I would necessarily come up with, but I'm glad that someone took a stab at it. The result is a low to mid budget thriller that actually pulls it off. I saw this movie at a surprise screening, but I'm glad that I did.

In a time of famine, a cynical veteran isolates herself and her family from the rest of the world. Abiding by strict rules, the family prospers, while others succumb to the famine or are targeted by cannibals. While she is okay with their way of life, her son is not and decides to test the limits of the rules, leaving the family fighting for survival.

This is not a typical end-of-the-world scenario. It does not involve zombies, a nuclear war, or an alien invasion. Like many end-of-the-world stories, it explores morality and human depravity. The family's race and history set the story apart from others. There is a good amount of well-choreographed action throughout, but some dialogue scenes are over-the-top and unnecessary. The story is predictable, even with a few unique aspects, making the one-hour and fifty-three-minute runtime feel long. This is definitely worth a stream when available.

40 acres kept me on my toes the entire time. I was enthralled. I'll start off by mentioning how beautifully shot the movie was. I loved each and every scene from the action packed moments to the heartwarming family moments. I also loved how the film was able to seamlessly blend humour, action and suspense in such a subtle but fun way. I also loved the characters and their development. Danielle Deadwyler killed it. Seeing Kataeem and Danielle grow individually and within their relationship was so pure, and it was refreshing to see Indigenous and Black love represented on screen. If you have a chance to see 40 acres... go see it.

Films about dystopian futures are getting more popular these days (are they trying to tell us something?), but they're not all created equal, and this debut feature from writer-director R. T. Thorne is one of those that doesn't quite cut it. The picture's intriguing premise starts off with considerable potential but, regrettably, as it unfolds, it loses traction, meanders, repeats itself, and unsuccessfully tries to fuse changes in tone and direction that don't mesh. In a world ravaged by a deadly fungal pandemic, civil war and famine, humanity's remnants struggle to stay alive, with farmland having become the most precious and priceless commodity. But holding on to this resource has become challenging given the rise of roaming bands of marauders seeking to steal it from its owners at any cost. Such is the experience of the Freemans, a family of African-Americans descended from Civil War survivors who migrated north to Canada after the conflict and settled on a lush parcel of land that has been in their possession for generations. Under present conditions, however, they must fight to retain it, combatting the invasively cunning intruders with same the same forcefulness and guile used by the would-be thieves. Leading these preventive efforts are parents Hailey (Danielle Deadwyler) and Galen (Michael Greyeyes) and their four children. They've trained the youngsters to be diligent and disciplined, which has helped to keep the farm productive and protected. But now, with the growing outside menace threatening them, they must be more vigilant than ever, a challenge considering the growing independence and unreliability of their eldest, Manny (Kataem O'Connor). As he comes of age, Manny has been increasingly looking to find his own path, one that frequently distracts him and doesn't always align with the family's objectives. And, as matters intensify, the Freemans are thus placed in ever greater peril. The depiction of that peril, however, becomes redundant, tedious and dubiously graphic after a time. The narrative also grows somewhat incongruent from the material that launches the film, namely, through the introduction of a far-fetched cannibalism storyline involving characters who more closely resemble zombies than their prototypical flesh-eating counterparts, who usually have the good sense to at least cook their food before consuming it. The film also has some of the worst sound quality I've seen in quite a while, its dialogue often coming across as garbled and barely intelligible (an increasingly annoying quality in many movie releases these days). To its credit, this offering features some gorgeous cinematography, an eclectic soundtrack and score, several engaging and unexpected (but underdeveloped) narrative themes and generally capable performances by the cast (despite not having a better script to work with). Ultimately, though, it's unfortunate that the execution here doesn't match the concept behind the story, coming across like an awkwardly conceived cross between the "Mad Max," "Rambo" and "Walking Dead" franchises. Judicious retooling might have improved the finished product, but, sadly, in its present state, those behind this effort could sadly be said to have bought the farm.

Doesn't give apocalypse nor scifi. Acting was amateur. The violence was accurate, the deuss ex machina scene was not believable. We didn't care enough for the characters from their poor development. Would not recommend not cause acting was laughable nor for the underwhelming climax of it all, but because loosely connected stories coupled by a deplorably written script gave a childish almost annoying vibe that makes a enjoyable movie going experience feel like torture . Had hopes by the rating of the film, so I had to leave a review to anyone thinking they might want to see this. DON'T. Your wasting your time.

I saw a preview for this movie a couple of months ago and made a point of making sure I saw it when it released. I'm so glad I did because this movie is easily one of the best Canadian productions I've ever seen.

R. T. Thorne really nailed this one, and left me leaving the theatre with a sense of pride that a Canadian filmmaker, and an almost all Canadian cast could make something so entertaining.

The casting was excellent! Everyone brought their own touches to an already excellent script. It was easy to care for every member of the family. Danielle Deadwyler is quickly becoming one of my favorite actresses and she nails it here as the overprotective Mom.

The cinematography was great, the title cards between the different sections of the film was a nice touch. All in all, this movie is worth the price of admission.

Bravo to everyone in the cast. I can't wait to see more from each and every one of them.

Bare bones dystopian sci-fi future thriller without AI, robots, cell phones, nuclear fallout or helicopters. Just farm living. And only crops are involved. Not even a smart pig. "40 Acres" works as a minimalist thriller because everything is very simple. A family defends their land from the bad guys. There you go.

A simple premise with plenty of layers to chew on. Technology is useless, except for radios and guns. Seeds are gold because livestock is deadstock, or just disappeared stock. No stock. Farms are the new countries, barb-wire bordered and defended to the death.

The defenders here just happen to be of a mix of Native and Black North Americans, coexisting as a well-oiled military machine, thriving in a survivalist bootcamp scenario. Community, culture, education, loyalty, tradition, family, survival, greed, coming of age, life lessons, it is all here. Albeit a bit formulaic and predictable, the film is lively enough to pull the scenario off.

"40 Acres" is a very good-looking film, brimming with excellent performances, that never strays far from the action. The secret to succeeding in this genre: never slow down so the audience can question the sketchy logic. Go go go!

The only thing I do not understand is the reason this movie is listed under science fiction. This is exactly how people will act when the food shortage hits the world, and it will hit us. Forget about viruses killing all animals, by 2050, we are guaranteed to have food shortages around the world due to the increased population, deforestation, decreasing soil fertility, climate change, unsustainable farming practices, and other factors. And just like this movie portrays, humans will lose their humanity and behave worse than animals (at least those are cruel unintentionally; they have no consciousness to comprehend their actions). So it is more of an action-drama than Sci-Fi.

A bit slow in the beginning. Could have been editted and cut for a shorter runtime. But overall, pretty good. Well shot with good acting and nice action. Gory at times but that is just to illustrate the point.

You've read the plot already, you know what the story is. So if you like Mad Max on a budget, feel free to give this a try.

This movie is great from beginning to end. Dialogue, storytelling, cinematography, and pace.

I keep waiting for Danielle Deadwyler to be found by Hollywood, but everyone gave great performances.

Theres even a setup that usually makes me rage quit movies and I still couldn't turn it off. This is a solid film in every way.

Screen Unseen for June 16th was 40 Acres, and AMC advertised this film for Juneteenth. I was debating whether I wanted to see it or not, and then I received the open time frame to watch this movie.

The engagement was compelling enough to keep my attention. Still, my reason for engagement was trying to understand the world-building and consequential behaviors through the protagonist continued to be mind-blowing. In her motherly role, she should have soft elements, especially with the exposition of history in the flashback scenes. By the time we view the ending scenes, the emotional finale did not leave a heart-warming impact or a specific message of family.

This movie has all the hallmarks of a good action/thriller, the plot was engaging and fast paced, and wow, the suspense! What stood out to me was the subtle but impactful exploration of Canadian history including things like the three sisters at the dinner table (Corn, Beans, and Squash), and other interesting notes. Although it was exploring a semi-familiar genre of cannibals (insane!) I found the movie refreshing and different. It was also beautiful, and the way the nature and landscape was shot was captivating. This movie will surprise you! I'm happy I stumbled upon it, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and entertaining watch!

Genuinely loved this movie. Was a great action flick based on a dystopian premise from a unique point of view. Some really great scenes in here - the lights out sequence was wild.

Director and co-writer Randall "RT!" Thorne really brought a world to life. There were genuine bonds of family that were shown, tested, and celebrated against a pretty tough environment. I've never seen a blended Black and Indigenous family portrayed on the screen in this way before. The film itself was a thrill ride but it was also a testament to resilience, love and community.

Loved the little Easter eggs in the books the kids were reading. And art in the house. All the way around, great film. Worth checking out!

I went to a mystery movie this evening. You pay admission and don't know what you are about to see. Tonight it was 40 Acres and since all animals are extinct in this movie there was no mule..... The hunt for food is real here, and if you have it, you have to guard it, and when anyone comes for it, you blast the life right out of them. It is about survival. Ma is a Vet. She is angry. It is her word, and that is it. It is one of those movies that is shot in the dark. Someone, please turn on a light. A few flashbacks help to move the story along, but not enough. Guns, guns, guns. Stabbing, slicing, gutting, cannibalism, enough.

It is about a family coming together in the end but the road to get there is bloody and tiresome. Can someone please make a court room drama, a family drama, a mind thriller.

It's a fun film. Don't let the thumbs down on these fool you because I have a sneaking suspicion that the majority didn't watch. They saw 40 acres, they saw a black woman on the cover, and they gave it a thumbs down. NEVER, judge a book by it's cover. In this case, a film. If you enjoy post apocalyptic thriller and horror movies.. it'll be right up your alley. Enough suspense and mystery to keep you guessing what may happen throughout. A few twists and turns to reel you back in just when you thought you knew what the outcome would be. It's much more clever than the title and picture on the cover portray it to be. In my opinion, had they named it differently and changed the cover initially, the rating would be even higher than it already is. Decently acted and written to be sure. I recommend a watch, judge for yourself and stop letting other people judge for you.

I watched 40 Acres yesterday and thought it was amazing. If you are in to good acting, great action and a story that connects to the soul and humanity found in each and every one of us then you must see this film. Music 10/10 as well.

I should also mention how touching some of the moments in the film are. It will take you back to your younger years. Some scenes will make you laugh out loud. There were scenes that had the whole theatre cheering.

The cinematography is very well done. Great editing and some very clever plots twists to keep you entertained.

The locations the film was created in were also very good.
