Ben Stiller Asked ‘Big Fan’ Barack Obama to Voice Animated Lumon Building for ‘Severance’
Image
Barack Obama was almost part of “Severance” Season 2. Ben Stiller, who executive produces and directs the series, said during a recent appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” (which you can see in the below video) that he asked former president Obama to voice the animated Lumon building in the second season. Despite Obama being a “big fan” of the series, he turned the role down.

“I didn’t ask him in person,” Stiller said of how he approached asking Obama. “I knew someone that knew his lawyer, and his lawyer said ‘I can relay the request if you write an email,’ so I wrote an email to him. Like two days later I get an email back from President Barack Obama saying, ‘Hey Ben, big fan of the show, love Season 1, can’t wait for Season 2. … Don’t think I have time in my schedule to make this happen.'”

Stiller added,...

Why Some Filmmakers Think Oscars Doc Voters Should ‘Suck It’ for Ignoring Celebrity Subjects
Image
During a recent appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” Will Ferrell playfully told Oscar documentary branch voters to “suck it” for snubbing “Will & Harper” in the best doc feature race. Although Ferrell was joking, he voiced a sentiment held by a number of doc branch members.

Netflix acquired “Will & Harper” for a reported eight figures after the film’s acclaimed premiere at last year’s Sundance Film Festival. The doc centers on a road trip Ferrell took with Harper Steele after she came out as transgender 30 years into their friendship. Although it covers a controversial, timely subject matter – gender transition – the film was, thanks in large part to Ferrell’s celebrity status, a success. But that success, depending on who you speak to in the doc branch, could be one reason why the film was not nominated.

Over the last several years, some of the most critically acclaimed,...

Why Oscar’s Best Documentary Feature nominees are notoriously difficult to predict
Image
Nominees for the 2025 Oscars will be announced on Jan. 23 — and one category that’s notoriously difficult to forecast is Best Documentary Feature. The Academy shortlist winnowed down the potential nominees to 15 films, but this year’s precursor awards have been all over the map. We’re also dealing with the Documentary Branch of the Academy — a group that has proven to be unpredictable.

In 2024, Gold Derby’s combined odds were able to forecast just two of the five nominees: The eventual winner, 20 Days in Mariupol, and Four Daughters. Scratched from the list were the Producers Guild of America’s top choice, American Symphony, along with Beyond Utopia, which had stacked PGA, Directors Guild of America, and BAFTA nominations, and the Emmy and National Board of Review winner, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie. So what have we learned?

Why we can’t count on the guilds

Last year, the...

Producers Guild of America extends nominations process amid ongoing LA wildfires
Image
The Producers Guild of America has extended the voting window and pushed back its nominations announcement to January 12 in light of the ongoing LA wildfires.

On Thursday the Guild said it had extended the voting window for the PGA Awards by two days until January 11 to allow members more time to cast ballots.

The PGA Awards are scheduled to take place on February 8 in Los Angeles. Last year’s best feature winner Oppenheimer went on to claim the best picture Oscar. American Symphony and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse won animation and documentary honours, respectively.

On Wednesday the Academy made a similar move,...

Barack Obama’s Top 10 Movies of 2024 Includes ‘Anora,’ ‘Dune: Part Two,’ ‘A Complete Unknown’ and More
Image
Barack Obama has shared his favorite movies of the year, continuing what has become an annual list-making tradition from the former President.

“Here are a few movies I’d recommend checking out this year,” Obama wrote in a briefer than usual caption on social media for this year’s list.

The full line-up, listed in no established order by Obama, includes “All We Imagine as Light,” “Conclave,” “The Piano Lesson,” “The Promised Land,” “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Anora,” “Dìdi (弟弟),” “Sugarcane” and “A Complete Unknown.”

Several titles on the former President’s list have featured heavily in awards conversations, with “Anora,” “Conclave” and the Timothée Chalamet-led duo of “A Complete Unknown” and “Dune: Part Two” being widely projected to land nods in the Oscars’ best picture category. The Tehran-set “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” is also Germany’s official submission for the best international feature film category.

Grammys 2025: Which artists, composers and films will be recognized in visual media categories?
Image
The Grammys’ visual media field honors the best in music made for film, television and other formats. This year’s contenders range from blockbuster soundtracks to more under-the-radar but important material from critically beloved artists.

For Best Song for Visual Media, the race is full of plausible winners. Olivia Rodrigo could take home another Grammy this year here for “Can’t Catch Me Now,” the lead single from the “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” soundtrack. There’s precedent for Rodrigo, as Taylor Swift previously won here for a song from the same franchise, “Safe and Sound” from the original “Hunger Games”; both, however, were snubbed by the Oscars.

Speaking of Oscars, one Academy Award-nominated song that could be a contender here is “It Never Went Away” performed and co-written by Grammy favorite Jon Batiste for his documentary “American Symphony.” Batiste doesn’t always win at these awards,...

Michelle Obama on the First Family’s Hollywood Pivot: “You’ve Got to Meet People Where They Are”
Image
The attendees of CAA Amplify are accustomed to an annual lineup comprising their own high-wattage, high-impact peers, but one of this year’s speakers was truly peerless.

Michelle Obama took the stage at the Ojai Valley Inn on Tuesday with Regina King for a conversation in which the former first lady reflected on her life since the White House and what she and president Barack Obama are looking to do with their production company, Higher Ground.

“What’s the format that people come together and learn? It’s movies, it’s short films, it’s stories,” said Obama, whose banner’s releases in the past year included the Jon Batiste documentary American Symphony, biopic Rustin and mystery thriller Leave the World Behind. “This is where America is, and you’ve got to meet people where they are. If Hollywood is where they are, as Barack and I think, then how...

Even When Naked, a Watch is a Must-Have Accessory At the Oscars — Just Ask John Cena
Image
Watch spotting at the Oscars is always catnip for timepiece lovers, as the biggest stars walk the red carpet wearing a parade of hyped horological mechanisms by the likes of Omega, Vacheron Constantin, Jacob & Co., Iwc, Cartier and Rolex (typically their own as that brand doesn’t gift or lend its pieces).

Falling into that latter category at Oscars 2024 was John Cena, who appeared nearly naked onstage during the telecast to announce the award for best costume design.

In addition to his modesty garment and a pair of Birkenstocks, the only other item the actor sported was his own Rolex Explorer II watch, which featured a white dial and an arrow-shaped 24-hour hand, as spotted by Watch Pro. The watch, which can display two time zones simultaneously, retails for $9,650.

Apparently, even when you’re naked at the Academy Awards, you don’t want to be without a trusty timepiece.

2024 Oscars Best Original Song nominees: 4 past champs, 1 veteran and 3 rookies
Image
The songs in the running for the 2024 Best Original Song Oscar are “It Never Went Away” (“American Symphony”), “I’m Just Ken” (“Barbie”), “What Was I Made For?” (“Barbie”), “The Fire Inside” (“Flamin’ Hot”), and “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Our current odds show that “What Was I Made For?” (31/10)) is favored to win, followed in order by “I’m Just Ken” (37/10), “It Never Went Away” (9/2), “The Fire Inside” (9/2), and “Wahzhazhe” (9/2).

This year’s roster of eight individual songwriters includes two pairs of former winners, each of which is associated with a “Barbie” song. Those who prevailed most recently are sibling duo Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, whose bid for “What Was I Made For?” comes two years after they took the gold for the title tune from the “James Bond” movie “No Time to Die” (2022). They are now set to battle “I’m...

Cinema Audio Society Awards: Oscar frontrunner ‘Oppenheimer’ wins with sound mixers
Image
The Cinema Audio Society Awards gave a boost to the Oscar hopes of “Oppenheimer” on Saturday. The film took top honors at these precursor prizes that honor sound mixing over one of its Oscar rivals for Best Sound — “Maestro”– as well as “Barbie,” “Ferrari,” “and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

The upcoming Oscars mark the fourth year for the Best Sound category, which combines Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. The Cas honors the latter while the Motion Picture Sound Editors salute achievements in the former.

Last year all five of the society’s favorites — “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Batman,” “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — sounded good to the academy’s sound branch. “Top Gun: Maverick” won both awards.

In 2022, four of the five Cas nominees — “Dune,” “No Time to Die,” “The Power of the Dog” and “West Side Story” — went on to contend at the Oscars.

Ryan Gosling, Billie Eilish, and More Will Perform Best Original Song Nominees at 2024 Oscars
Image
After Kenough of a back and forth, Ryan Gosling has finally agreed to perform “I’m Just Ken” at the 96th Oscars on March 10.

On Tuesday, February 28, the show’s executive producers Molly McNearney, Katy Mullan, and Raj Kapoor (who is also the showrunner this year) announced that all five tracks nominated for the Best Original Song Oscar will be performed live during the ceremony.

That means joining Gosling on stage will be Oscar-winning music producer Mark Ronson, who co-wrote the music and lyrics to nominee “I’m Just Ken” with his co-composer on the film Andrew Wyatt.

Fellow contributors to the “Barbie” soundtrack Billie Eilish and Finneas will also be back on the Dolby Theatre stage just two years after they won the same Oscar category for their Bond theme “No Time to Die.” This time, the sibling songwriting duo will perform “What Was I Made For?,” the climactic...

Oscars 2024 ceremony adds Ryan Gosling performing plus Michelle Yeoh, Brendan Fraser, Jamie Lee Curtis as presenters
Image
Oscar producers have announced the first performer and initial list of presenters for the Oscars 2024 ceremony. Nominee Ryan Gosling will perform the Original Song contender “I’m Just Ken” from “Barbie” years after he turned down an opportunity to sing music from “La La Land” on the event. That news is according to our Pmc sister website Variety.

Presenters include all four of last year’s acting winners: Brendan Fraser from “The Whale” and Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan from “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” In fact, every presenter revealed on Monday is a previous Academy Awards champ except for Michelle Pfeiffer and Zendaya. That list includes Mahershala Ali, Nicolas Cage, Jessica Lange, Matthew McConaughey, Lupita Nyong’o, Al Pacino and Sam Rockwell.

There is no word yet on who will perform the other nominated tunes “What Was I Made For?” (“Barbie”), “The Fire Inside” (“Flamin’ Hot...

Image
The 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards took awards season one step closer to the Oscars.

The annual PGA Awards happened February 25, immediately following the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards. The awards-heavy weekend festivities also included the 2024 SAG Awards on February 24.

The nominees mirror the Academy Awards’ frontrunners list, with winner “Oppenheimer,” plus “American Fiction,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Past Lives,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest” among the contenders.

Formally known as the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, the Theatrical Motion Picture category for the PGA Awards has historically been an indicator of Best Picture winners, with 15 of the previous 20 winners going on to win the top title at the Academy Awards.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” director and “Maestro” producer Martin Scorsese was honored with the David O. Selznick Achievement Award for his producing work over the last half-century.

2024 guild awards scorecard: ‘Oppenheimer’ finishes with 9 wins
Image
Between February 10 and March 7, a dozen motion picture guilds lauded the most outstanding achievements in their respective fields during the previous year. The 2024 guild awards season then officially concluded with the announcement of the Writers Guild of America honors on April 14. In the end, “Oppenheimer” outpaced all of its competitors with prizes from nine guilds.

Typically, all 13 guilds hand out their trophies before the corresponding Oscars take place, but this year’s WGA Awards were delayed six weeks because of the organization’s recent 148-day strike. The groups whose ceremonies preceded the Oscars on March 10 comprise art directors, directors, makeup artists & hairstylists, costume designers, visual effects artists, actors, producers, sound mixers, film editors, cinematographers, sound editors, and casting directors.

Below is a complete breakdown of guild wins by film. See the full guild nominations scorecard here.

PGA Awards predictions: Our official odds in 10 film and TV categories
Image
Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer” will notch another incredibly important precursor win on its path to the Oscars at the upcoming 35th Producers Guild of America Awards on Sunday, Feb. 25. According to our official odds, the blockbuster film will take home the honor of Best Picture. The ceremony includes other film categories such as animated and documentary feature and television trophies for drama, comedy, limited series and more. Scroll down for our official PGA Awards odds in 10 categories with our winner predictions highlighted in gold.

A victory for “Oppenheimer” here would be significant because, more often than not, the winner at PGA goes on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Since 2000, the two prizes have gone hand-in-hand 16 times. The exceptions are film years 2001 (when PGA opted for “Moulin Rouge!” and the Oscars awarded “A Beautiful Mind”), 2004 (“The Aviator” / “Million Dollar Baby”), 2005 (“Brokeback Mountain” / “Crash”), 2006 (“Little Miss Sunshine” / “The Departed...

Deadline’s Doc Talk Debates: Is The Documentary World Really “Reeling” Over The Oscar Nominations?
Image
When the Oscar nominations were announced last month, it marked a watershed moment for the Documentary Feature category. All the nominated films focused on international subjects – stories from Uganda, Tunisia, Ukraine, India and Chile — and not a single American director was recognized.

Two prominent documentaries by major U.S. filmmakers were among the leading contenders that got snubbed: Matthew Heineman’s American Symphony, and Davis Guggenheim’s Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie.

A headline in a recent Variety piece described the doc community as “reeling” over the nominations. An unnamed documentary producer quoted in the article expressed deep concern over the lack of recognition for American filmmakers and said it was a “giant mistake” that the Documentary branch – which determines the nominees – “did not nominate some of the most successful and most beloved films of the year.”

BAFTA winners list in all 25 categories
Image
The BAFTA Awards were presented on February 18 by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). So who prevailed? Scroll down for the complete 2024 BAFTA Awards winners list in all categories.

BAFTA is an independent arts charity that comprises thousands of industry insiders, much like the American motion picture academy. The BAFTAs could well give us a preview of what the Oscars might do in three weeks time on March 10. And with voting for the Oscars kicking off on February 22, this precursor could have an outsized influence.

Until 2013, the entire BAFTA membership decided the nominees in a complicated two-part process that involved a lot of longlists with the general membership deciding the semi-finalists and the branches making the final determination of the nominees. This was replaced in 2013 by a system more akin to the Oscars where nominations were determined by each branch (except for Best Picture). Two years ago,...

Two of the top contenders for Best Documentary Feature at the Academy Awards have something to celebrate ahead of their upcoming Oscar showdown.

On Saturday night, The Eternal Memory, directed by Chilean filmmaker Maite Alberdi, was named Best IberoAmerican Film at the Goya Awards in Valladolid, Spain. Meanwhile, on this side of the Atlantic, Mstyslav Chernov’s 20 Days in Mariupol won Best Documentary at the DGA Awards held at the Beverly Hilton.

As she accepted the Goya – Spain’s equivalent of the Oscar – Alberdi was joined on stage by Paulina Urrutia, one of the two protagonists of the film.
