Another winner!

I couldn't be happier! Marco Berger touched my heart again with this winning dramatic romance between two timid individuals, unsure of life and love. "Hawaii" makes the perfect addition to the collection of Marco Berger's offerings. Be sure to catch them all. They make a perfect film festival all by themselves.

"Hawaii" lays out the day to day interactions between Eugenio (played by the unconventionally handsome Manuel Vignau, "Bruno" from "Plan B") and Martín (played by Mateo Chiarino) that build a budding romance neither knows how to address. Tension builds until, finally, a fateful kiss that changes everything. I spent the rest of the movie repeating the mantra "please, please, please, please" for the perfect ending. See if I got my wish...

You already know this story

It feels just like when you were a kid and you felt attracted to that friend of yours:

The silent moments waiting for something to be said, the observing, thoughts running through your head, failed attempts to get attention in the right direction, the insistence, the uncertainty... The "I want you but I want you to be the one who makes the move."

With this movie I can remember the sensations I went through while discovering what true attraction feels like. They do a great job in beautiful silent scenes that comunicate way more than the spoken ones.

profound grace

a beautiful film. for silence and words. for the tension and new values of ordinary gestures. for the definition of friendship who explores the nuances more than significance. for the special joy, high delicacy, science to use the detail in gentle manner. a film about a meeting after long time, the search to reconquest the years of youth and the root of present dialog. sure, it is not a surprise. Argentinian cinema has many special films but this case seems be real special. for the tension who has not only sexual level. for the wise manner to use each scene as seed of the other. for the spring air , using a form of innocence who becomes the bridge between characters. a film who is not bad to see. for a rare state of emotions.

A beautiful film full of tension, beautiful imagery and fantastic mood.

Finally got to see Hawaii by one of my favorite filmmakers, Argentine Marco Berger. I was not disappointed, what a beautiful film full of tension, beautiful imagery and fantastic mood. Manuel Vignau, whom we've seen in Berger's film Plan B is mature in this film, exciting, intriguing. And balancing this portrayal is the also fantastic Mateo Chiarino. Both are just purely fantastic. The film is full of layers that are to be explored and understood for emotional context and in there is where you find the strength of this film which is full of silence, yet so much is being told. I personally love films like this and Mr. Berger is a master at showing and not telling, yet the small moments of conversation between the characters seem so full of importance and nuance you cannot help but to completely lose yourself in their story, this is a film that deserves a watch and maybe a couple more after that.

Clean, brilliant, a piece of film art

I was first introduced to Marco Berger with "Plan B", still one of my favorite films. In both that film and "Hawaii" Mr. Berger has done some of the finest modern story-telling I've had the pleasure to experience.

These are definitely NOT American films - they are slow to develop, sparse on dialogue and largely visual in nature. Those qualities by themselves make these films creative and interesting. But it is the development of both the story and the characters that really bring the films to life.

The single item that makes a film work (in my estimation) is whether or not an audience can feel that a character has come to life in the film - has come alive, feels real to us. "Hawaii" does that every bit as effectively as "Plan B." It is an additional measure of quality (and a great treat) that a film have more to say to an audience on a second, third or fourth viewing. Both of these films do that handily.

It is of particular note in this film to watch the slow building of a relationship between these two men. And, as in "Plan B", their sexuality in some respects is incidental to the connection the men in both films form. There is a breadth and depth to these relationships that seems rare these days in film.

Can't recommend both "Plan B" and "Hawaii" enough. Outstanding films.

Spectacular

Beautiful movie. Flawless. The direction is amazing. The music is just as fantastic as the photography, locations, story and editing. I really enjoyed every aspect of it. The work of the actors is a pleasure to the senses. They are completely natural and seem effortless in every scene, word and gesture. Manuel Vignau and Mateo Chiarino are really worth following. I'm sure that after "Hawaii", we will hear a lot more from them. I think it's a gift and a joy for the public and not as common as it should, seeing performances like the ones this two actors deliver in this film. This is the first Marco Berger movie (director) I have seen and I cannot wait to see more. He is honest, sensitive and clearly a perfectionist. It's a really poetic and subtle love story that moves you in a very special way. I really appreciate the fact that anybody can relate to this story and to their characters, their fears and their dreams, no matter what their sexual orientation might be. A very intimate and personal film.No gay clichés here. Non. "Hawaii" leaves you with a smile on your face and with very high spirits. If you can buy it, do, it's the kind of movie that you can see more than once.

Hawaii Review

I've watched the movie itself. And in my opinion, though it wasn't good, neither bad at all. Noticed that there are scenes, I guess, were there with no apparent reason as it has no conversation at all. The actors were merely looking at each other, viewers could not imagine to what they were thinking or trying to portray and for which that scene was? Aside from the very slow character development, it misses to give more emphasize on the climax of the story. Honestly, I was left hanging. I would recommend it to my friends and I did enjoy it as a whole. I can somewhat relate to the story, if not the film was made in Argentina, I would say that, it's a copycat of my own life story. Honestly, I fell in love with the character of Mateo Chiarino (Martin), very manly and appealing to the story. Hope to see more of Mateo's movies.

Staggeringly Brilliant

Marco Berger continues to redefine film in ways that simply have not been done before, making him the most innovative and creative filmmaker working today. Granted, his subject matter is remote from the audience mainstream and his appeal may possibly be quite limited, but his approach to film is so new, so advanced, that it really does leave you gasping for air. And sitting at the edge of your seat because what you are seeing is so new unlike anything ever done before in film. One thing does stand out for me, at least, and it is that Berger must find 2001: A Space Odyssey the ultimate film ever made because Berger pays homage to 2001 in virtually every scene he shoots, simply by virtue of the pace of the scene as well as the camera placement. As far as theme is concerned, Berger continues to convey the central idea that men in bonding with one another wish only to remain as innocent as children, forever playing in the sun, basking in the glory of pure friendship that remains for all time.

Happens too slowly

Although be the plot be too slow, the direction is amazing as well as the soundtrack, the ambience is calm and cozy. But the characters just stay staring to each other with no action, and when this happen is to late to develop something.

delicate picture

the past. and its possibility to be basis of present. a film about other as part of your definition. remarkable for its delicacy and touching nuances. for the precision of acting and for the exploitations of small, ordinary gestures. a film who impress. the cause - its smart mixture between vulnerability of the lead characters worlds. the atmosphere who reminds memories of viewer and a lot of hypothesis about story evolution. and for the balance of ages as land for memories. a seductive movie. for its details . for the tension. for the crumbs of childhood as pillar of ages. and, sure, for its end. a kind of gem. or, maybe, only a delicate picture from a summer.

Looks like someone's fantasy made it to production!

Not much happening here. There were so many parts that are strange and made me kinda cringe. eg. If I had a cut on my thigh, I wouldn't need a person to dress it for me while my package was in their face! Likewise with the guy waiting and watching while his friend tries on the clothes to see if they fit... I found myself shaking my head.

excellent

One of my favorite gay films ever. A charming tale about a young man (Martín, played by Mateo Chiarino) who is down on his luck, homeless and poor much of his life who returns to his birth town and randomly goes to work for a childhood friend (Eugenio, played by Manuel Vignau) as a handy man. The wealthy Eugenio, who is gay, takes a liking to the attractive Martin and eventually provides him with clothes and a place to stay. Eugenio subtly hits on Eugenio, who is seemingly blind to the advances. Both characters are deftly played, very nice directing and a storyline that at times is suspenseful. Won't give a spoiler but the ending is worthy sticking around for. Very enjoyable movie! Parental alert: frontal nudity by both actors, but not overboard with it.

Beautiful, Understated but Powerful Gay-Themed film

¡Qué buena película! Although it's very slow and the "music" is a little distracting at times, especially during the extended beginning sequence, this is an excellent Spanish-language gay-themed movie from Argentina.

The camera and director linger on small details and gestures, and create a very credible atmosphere and true tension and drama despite very little dialog.

I enjoyed this movie so much that I almost immediately watched it again. Perhaps not for those who prefer fast-paced action movies, I found this movie to be very engaging, interesting and fulfilling.

Highly recommended.

Very Enjoyable Film

I watched this movie last night and really enjoyed it. The two leads are attractive and enjoyable to watch, and the acting was wonderful - the unspoken attraction was very evident on their faces - and the slow build up rather than just one pouncing on the other immediately was a refreshing change.

The film's quiet scenes to me were actually a great metaphor for the unspoken attraction....how often do we find ourselves attracted to someone and longing to tell them, but remaining silent and just 'observing' them from a distance? There was a subtle beauty in the non-dialogue filled moments that allowed the actors to convey what the characters were feeling through their eyes, their smiles, etc.

This being a foreign film was, to me, a lot better than it would have been as an American made offering. I have enjoyed many American made gay films, but I have to confess that the foreign ones are, to me, overall better in story and quality, plus the gorgeous scenery of the locations are a plus as well.

Gay-themed films, which I watch a lot of, have to go a long, long way to surpass what has become my favorite in years (Esteros) but this film definitely ranks up in the pack of ones I've really enjoyed over time.

Definitely deserving of a 10./10.

Hawaii's scarce use of dialogue may put you off at first, but the beautiful music that fills up the emptiness surely makes up for it. Every time they do speak, it's either something simple or profound. The overall "feel" of the film is homely and warm. The softness of their voices adds to it. The tension between the characters is totally palpable and frankly adorable. There isn't really any sexual content, which was a pleasant surprise to me. But I digress. Definitely don't watch this if you're in a rush. Take your time, rewatch it many times. Soak it up. There's a lot of heart in this movie that has you feeling a thousand things at once. The setting is beautiful, the camera work keeps things interesting, the acting is really natural and easy to watch, and when it's over you'll wish there was more. Hawaii avoids clichés while maintaining a kind-of-plot (the one down-side: not a whole lot going on besides two men falling in love, but I, personally, don't mind at all, and I don't think you will either). It's realistic and tender and just pretty neat! Definitely deserving of a 10/10.

There is something about some pineapples

I loved the film. But there was the question in my mind about what the 'pineapples' meant. And then at the end I figured that we (the audience) are not supposed to know exactly what that's about. It's something for Eugenio and Martin to understand. At the end you'll know too. But that's great to have a message that only two of the characters will understand and us only tangentially. Excellent stuff!

Wow!

I was so moved by this film and I didn't expect to be. By the end I was openly weeping. I love love love Marco Berger and how he composes a film. It's gentle and real and heartbreakingly true to life. I'm obsessed with all of the men he shows in his films. They come across as real and beautiful, human.
