Fast services are on a tear — especially in Latin America, where Brazil is emerging as a global leader in adoption and monetization.
Already the second-largest market for Netflix subscribers outside the U.S. Brazil is on track to become the No. 2 international Fast market by 2029, the country playing a growing role in how the next era of connected TV unfolds.
That is one of the key takeaways from a presentation to be delivered by María Rua Aguete, Omdia’s senior research director of global analyst Omdia, made Tuesday as one of the opening sessions at Rio2C, Latin America’s largest entertainment creativity meet.
According to Omdia, the media and entertainment sector will generate $1.07 trillion globally in 2025, with online video commanding the lion’s share — accounting for 70% of that total and growing at 13% year-on-year. While traditional pay-tv is in steady decline, Fast services are scaling rapidly, both in terms of user engagement and advertising revenue.

Directors Fernando Coimbra (“A Wolf at the Door”) and top production houses Gullane (“Senna”), O2 Filmes (“City of God”) and Boutique Filmes (“3%”) feature among 10 new productions announced Monday by Netflix.
The new announcements matter. Netflix does not break out client figures for individual countries. Brazil ranks, however, as its second-biggest market globally with 20.6 million paid subscribers, according to global analyst Omdia estimates. That places it ahead of the U.K. (17.7 million), Germany (17.5 million), and France (14.6 million).
One of Brazil’s biggest challenges is to export its biggest swings. Save for a rare exception like “Senna,” Netflix Brazilian shows are not global plays. Yet some achieve global viewership via Netflix, led in 2024 by “Desperate Lies,” Burning Betrayal,” “Senna” (which bowed Nov. 29), “Bionic” and “Good Morning, Veronica” according to PlumResearch. Further breakouts this year take in “A Tragedy Foretold: Flight 3054,” “Sintonia,” “Senna,” “Burning Betrayal” and “Stranded with My Mother in Law,...

We join Liana’s journey in Desperate Lies,Lies, seeking motherhood yet facing deception. This Brazilian drama unfolds her struggles amid relationships tested by secrets and sacrifice over 17 episodes. While genres like drama andtelevision series television series inspire the story, balancing depth across such a runtime proves challenging.
Still, director Angela Chaves shapes a glimpse into family bonds worth exploring. At the show’s heart lies Liana, brought to life vividly by Juliana Paes. Her unwavering love and the challenges of pregnancy intrigue, though darkness looms ahead. Intertwining lives unfold against a backdrop of Brazilian culture, anchored by stellar roles such as Felipe Abib’s unsettling presence.
This review aims to appreciate both strengths and limits. Characters, narratives, and production will be assessed alongside themes of motherhood, betrayal, betrayal, and truth. Most importantly, we consider if Desperate Lies engages throughout its at times exhaustive journey or proves better in moderation.

Overall streaming numbers for July 8-14 came down a fair amount from the record-breaking previous week. HBO’s House of the Dragon, however, was virtually even with its prior viewing total — which was good enough to move it to the top spot for the first time.
House of the Dragon amassed 1.27 billion minutes of viewing on Max (not including viewing on HBO’s cable channels), just a smidge below the 1.3 billion it had the week before. With the two titles ahead of it the previous week, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and Suits, each falling by significant amounts, the HBO show moved up to No. 1.
Suits fell by 28 percent week-to-week to 1.07 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Peacock, which was good for third place overall, slightly behind Bluey (1.08 billion minutes on Disney+) and just ahead of The Boys (1.05 billion for Prime Video), which had its fifth consecutive week over the billion-minute mark.

Season 6 of the Peacock reality dating show was the No. 1 most-watched streaming original series in the U.S. during the week of July 5-11, hitting 919.1 million minutes watched, per Luminate. This week, one of the standouts from the streamer's catalog was a Brazilian series called Desperate Lies. The show centers around Liana (Juliana Paes), a woman whose life gets turned upside down after an unexpected pregnancy, betrayal, and abuse.

She kept this secret for 18 years. Tomas went along with the lie—to protect the kids—until he stopped doing so. He killed Oscar, the man who assaulted Liana, and ended up in jail and suffering for years. Tomas was filled with anger and decided to reveal the truth, not to clear his conscience but to ruin lives. He used the...

After watching the trailer for the upcoming Bollywood movie Bad Newz, I stumbled upon something really mind-blowing—superfecundation. It’s a rare condition where a woman can get pregnant by two different men at the same time. Yes, that means she can have twins with different fathers! Who knew this was even possible? This fascinating and somewhat shocking scenario also pops up in the Netflix series Desperate Lies. Here’s how the story goes: Liana, the main character, gets pregnant by her husband, Tomas, and also by a man named Oscar, who unfortunately forced himself on her. As a result, Liana ends up having twins with two different dads: Mateus, Tomas’ son, and Marcos, Oscar’s son. This situation totally turns their lives upside down and leads to all kinds of chaos and drama. There are so many questions that come to mind: How did Tomas cope with this situation?...

Desperate Lies tells the story of Liana, an ordinary Brazilian woman who is keen on having a child with her loving husband. Though the decision of wanting to have a child has always been both Liana’s and Tomas,’ he gets a little bit tired of having to make love on schedule and ends up cheating on his wife with a fellow cyclist named Claudia. Liana finds out about the affair, and Tomas decides to leave the house for a bit to cool down. At this time, Liana visits her best friend and business partner, Deborah, to speak about her anguish. Deborah tells her that the best thing to do in this situation would be to cool off at her brother Oscar’s club, which has the hottest scene in the city. Trusting Deborah, Liana decides to go with her, but as soon as they get there, Deborah ends up...

Rather than Desperate Lies, this series should be called “Excruciating Lies.” The Brazilian telenovela follows the story of Liana and the many lies that break apart her family. Liana is a woman desperate to be a mother, but her loving husband doesn’t much appreciate living on a schedule and decides to leave her one fine evening. However, things took a turn for the worse when a man Liana trusted, her best friend’s younger brother, gave her drugs and then assaulted her. To add insult to injury, a little while later, Liana learns that she’s pregnant with twins, but shockingly, one child is her husband Tomas’ and the other is the assaulter Oscar’s. The story begins in 2006 and moves all the way up to 2024, where Liana’s kids are now 18 years old, and the truth is out there for the world to see. While Oscar is dead,...

Alright, if you’re interested in a show that will have you hooked for two days straight, then Netflix’s new Brazilian original Desperate Lies might do the trick for you, but at what cost? The melodrama has 17 forty-minute to hour-long episodes that keep spinning the yarn, leaving you frustrated from start to finish. After watching 7 episodes of the show thus far, I’ve got to stop and wonder why exactly I’m invested in this story at all, or if I am at all. Desperate Lies follows Liana, a woman desperate for motherhood, and the many lies she has to spin to keep her family together. The show is essentially a family epic that is, in all honesty, exhausting. Not only is the drama way too long, including multiple plots to weave an intricate story that only ends up becoming a shoddy carpet instead of a beautiful tapestry, I mean,...
