Fast services are on a tear — especially in Latin America, where Brazil is emerging as a global leader in adoption and monetization.

Already the second-largest market for Netflix subscribers outside the U.S. Brazil is on track to become the No. 2 international Fast market by 2029, the country playing a growing role in how the next era of connected TV unfolds.

That is one of the key takeaways from a presentation to be delivered by María Rua Aguete, Omdia’s senior research director of global analyst Omdia, made Tuesday as one of the opening sessions at Rio2C, Latin America’s largest entertainment creativity meet.

According to Omdia, the media and entertainment sector will generate $1.07 trillion globally in 2025, with online video commanding the lion’s share — accounting for 70% of that total and growing at 13% year-on-year. While traditional pay-tv is in steady decline, Fast services are scaling rapidly, both in terms of user engagement and advertising revenue.

Directors Fernando Coimbra (“A Wolf at the Door”) and top production houses Gullane (“Senna”), O2 Filmes (“City of God”) and Boutique Filmes (“3%”) feature among 10 new productions announced Monday by Netflix.

The new announcements matter. Netflix does not break out client figures for individual countries. Brazil ranks, however, as its second-biggest market globally with 20.6 million paid subscribers, according to global analyst Omdia estimates. That places it ahead of the U.K. (17.7 million), Germany (17.5 million), and France (14.6 million).

One of Brazil’s biggest challenges is to export its biggest swings. Save for a rare exception like “Senna,” Netflix Brazilian shows are not global plays. Yet some achieve global viewership via Netflix, led in 2024 by “Desperate Lies,” Burning Betrayal,” “Senna” (which bowed Nov. 29), “Bionic” and “Good Morning, Veronica” according to PlumResearch. Endemol Shine Boomdog, the producer of Max Limited Series “Like Water for Chocolate,” has joined forces with Brazil’s A Fábrica to launch A Fábrica Mexico & U.S. Hispanic. Both are part of Banijay Americas.

The new label will focus on producing scripted content for the Mexican, Latin American and U.S. Hispanic markets, and is set to launch operations later this year.

Said Ben Samek, CEO of Banijay Americas: “This partnership expands our presence in the scripted content market and underscores our commitment to delivering engaging programming to a massive and ever-growing audience across Latin America and beyond.”

Overall streaming numbers for July 8-14 came down a fair amount from the record-breaking previous week. HBO’s House of the Dragon, however, was virtually even with its prior viewing total — which was good enough to move it to the top spot for the first time.

House of the Dragon amassed 1.27 billion minutes of viewing on Max (not including viewing on HBO’s cable channels), just a smidge below the 1.3 billion it had the week before. With the two titles ahead of it the previous week, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and Suits, each falling by significant amounts, the HBO show moved up to No. 1.

Suits fell by 28 percent week-to-week to 1.07 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Peacock, which was good for third place overall, slightly behind Bluey (1.08 billion minutes on Disney+) and just ahead of The Boys (1.05 billion for Prime Video), which had its fifth consecutive week over the billion-minute mark.

This was the second week at No. 1 for "Love Island." Season 6 viewership improved slightly from last week's 919 million minutes watched after the release of Episodes 28 through 33. "The Rise of Red" debuted on the the first day of this viewing window, giving it a full week to accrue its total.

The series falls in the second overall spot, right between the sports series Receiver and the superhero show Supacell. Already stacked with Korean rom-coms and Spanish high-school dramas, Netflix has now brought a Brazilian show, Desperate Lies (Pedaco De Mim), a dark romance show created by Angela Chaves and headlined by Juliana Paes.

According to the Netflix synopsis, “Due to a rare phenomenon, a woman finds herself pregnant with twins by two men. Over time, she strives to keep her family united — and her secrets hidden.”

Brazil’s Boutique Filmes, producer of “3%,” the first Netflix non English-language series to break out abroad, is linking to Portugal’s SPi (“Glória”) to produce “Seven Women,” a reimagining of Brazilian Letícia Wierzchowski’s novel which yielded one of the biggest hits in Brazilian TV history: Globo’s “A Casa das Sete Mulheres,” sold to over 80 countries.

Globo’s telenovela had 51 episodes; Boutique and SPi’s rolls off this huge IP but weighs in as an eight-part historical drama.

Boutique Filmes produced Netflix’s first Brazilian series, “3%,” which ran to four seasons, and notably 2020’s “Omniscient” and Netflix’s first Brazilian true crime “Elize Matsunaga: Once Upon a Crime.”
