Not familiar with anyone of the cast but Director Carles Torrens I'm familiar with, though with mix results.

Verdict

As a life long mid 40's horror fanatic by favourite sub-genre has always been zombies. However I'm not as excited booting a new zombie movie up like I used to be as generally they're cliché ridden, trope saturated generic messes and it's rare I come across one I truly enjoy. Part of reason is that they're cheap to make so indie filmmakers with no budget and even less talent are making them and even when the budget is there the originality has waned.

With a generic title like Apocalypse Z which would befit a Scyfy original I went in assuming the absolute worst but found myself engrossed in an entertaining and likeable affair.

Following a single character has been done before but tends to be the setup for rather boring zombie movies this bucks that trend and was very engaging. His tiny travelling companion added both joy and consistent dread throughout the film which I enjoyed but very easily could have not.

The film isn't perfect, it has a mediocre ending and suffers from pacing issues a couple of times but overall this is one of the better zombie movies I've seen in the last 5 years and is well worth a watch for anyone who is a fan of the sub-genre.

Rants

I have 6 cats, they're my world. Being a crazy cat dad and generally a person who looks at the world with a animals > people stance made me wince throughout the movie. I had to Google in advance to find out if the pet dies, if the answer had been yes I wouldn't have watched this as that to me is the biggest horror trope that needs to die. What it did bring here though was heart racing dread and genuine concern, I approve! Horror movies simply don't scare me anymore and haven't for 30 odd years but this dread was a surprising and appreciate substitute.

As a fan of zombie movies, I went into this without knowing the plot or heard anything before for this. I saw it because it was with zombies and I gave it a chance. What a pleasant surprise it was.

The movie managed to deliver the stress of being alone in such situation. At start it is slow but it needed so as to feel the character and to care for him and for his car!

The acting was above par the scenery beautiful, the zombies well done and general the feeling of the movie was excellent.

I would recommend it of course to zombie fans.

It remind me a little of 28 days later mixed with walking dead.

Nice little zombie movie!

Spain movie studios have proved themselves with this one; they can perfectly make post-apocalyptic zombie movies just like REC or this one!

It gave me The Last of Us vibes to some extent which allowed me to be on the edge of my seat almost constantly except for the second part of the movie which becomes a bit slow, and they use typical clichés such as X character appearing when you know they are just "disposable", or the protagonist being "miraculously" saved here and there.

However, it's a worth watching movie which leaves the viewers with a cliffhanger so that we eagerly wait for the sequel!

All in all, it's not the best zombie movie out there but accomplishes its task: keep you sitting in front of your TV till the end!

What a surprise when I came across this film the other day. I had bought the Kindle book version in 2020, and it was a blast reading, so much that when I finished it I went for the Part 2. The film similarity to the book is huge, with some changes but acceptable, missing the part in which its main Character has to do a mission for the russian sailors downtown, but for the rest is a very easy going film if you accept zombie movies and that not all zombies may die if wounded in the head.

As always there is so much more in a book reading than in its movie recreation. I would recommend the film and so the book.

Apocalyptic times will have you surviving the best way you can. A virus spreads fast across the world, creating rabid creatures. A man and his cat look for safe places to hide on sea and on land, as the food is dwindling. This movie is a story of survival by any means necessary. The physical and emotional aspects of this movie grasped me, as I was watching. I cared about the main character and his fight to survive. The tension and infection is rising as the cat starts to feel grumpy. Overall i enjoyed the movie & I am hoping for a part two, sequel, or prequel. Make it happen Hollywood. I love zombie movies.

Apocalypse Z: El principio del fin is a decent movie, but don't expect much. The story is typical. A normal man flawed with the sadness from his past, tries to survive and reach a place which he thinks it's safe.

The acting is good enough, and the special effects are decent. If you love horror genre and zombie movies, it is for you to have some good time.

The movie adds nothing to the genre, all the plots, twists and jumpscare scenes are there, but we don't get anything new. Survival, horror, fall of society and mankind is all we have seen many times before.

As horror is a genre which is not for everyone, this movie is not able to get much attention, and if you're interested in zombie genre, and a newcomer, there are many better alternatives out there.

Well, I just saw this because I had nothing to do, and I just had to catch a quick bite and then leave, but ended up postponing my meeting because I got hooked. The movie was alright, and it had that thriller, apocalypse vibe to it, you can see it's not a high budget movie, but they did very well with what they had, and it worked!

When you think about all the horrible apocalypse movies that had crossed the screen, this is way superior to those. The acting was also acceptable, nothing Bollywood ish over this movie, which I tbh was actually expecting a little bit lmao. I got a little bit the walking dead season 1 vibes watching this.

Despite the terrible title, this isn't half bad. It may be the most character driven zombie movie I've seen since the wonderful 28 Days Later. These zombies are created through a virus that first has a long incubation period and is under control until a new variant comes along (sound familiar?) in which that time period is reduced to mere minutes and we are off and running. The film starts out strong establishing the main character and a startling car accident. He is the focal point from there on in along with, honest, his cat. His attachment to this cat is one of the more affecting aspects here, though some of it is a bit preposterous that he could contain this cat through all they go through, but it's a movie and they do plug along. It is a bit distracting though as I found myself worrying if it was eating, wondering how did it go to the bathroom, etc. Lol. There's less action in this than most zombie movies these days as this is more character driven. That works for me as constant action & noise can be monotonous. It's a Spanish film and the lead, Francisco Ortiz, was unknown to me, but I hope to see him again as he's a very strong presence. The ending action was a bit much to me, but the final scene is dark and leaves this open to a sequel. Id so, I hope it has a better title.

"Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End" brings an invigorating Spanish flair to the well-worn zombie genre, blending terror with a surprising resilience not only in its human characters but in an endearing feline companion as well. At nearly two hours, the film could benefit from a modest trim or, perhaps, a few extra zombie-packed scenes to heighten the tension. Nonetheless, it maintains a fine balance of suspense and emotion, keeping viewers thoroughly entertained. For aficionados of the genre, Apocalypse Z is a delightfully crafted thrill that's sure to satisfy.

I would give it a sound 7 out of 10-an enjoyable entry in the annals of apocalyptic cinema.

I love zombie apocalypse movies but this didn't done anything new or unique from all of the other zombie movies done throughout the years. I think this isn't bad by any means it's just average if you're expecting something new you will be disappointed.

I see potential definitely held down by the writing there wasn't much zombies in the first half of the movie maybe the budget was low because they could've done a lot better in that small town. He also could've survived by fishing if there wasn't food left in the town.

This is just another entry in this genre idk why the writers and directors don't want to risk and try something new because people are bored and want something new and exciting. Hope they learned something and do better if they want to make a sequel.

Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End is a solid addition to the zombie horror genre. While it doesn't bring anything groundbreaking, it's a well-made film with good acting, an engaging story of a man and his cat surviving in what feels like the end of the world, and endless waves of bloodthirsty undead. Notably, this movie features "fast zombies," so expect lots of frantic chases and intense action.

After watching the trailer, I had high expectations, so I was a bit disappointed by the slow start. The first 45 minutes had little action, but it turned out to be the calm before the storm. Suddenly, the pace shifted, and in just a few minutes, Apocalypse Z went from zero to one hundred. From then on, the film was packed with action.

The movie delves into relationships on several levels. The main character has flashbacks about his late wife, frequently tries to talk to his sister, and, of course, converses with his cat. He also meets new allies and enemies among the survivors. As the story progresses, these relationships reveal their importance to both the protagonist's journey and the plot itself.

While the second half has plenty of zombies, Apocalypse Z reminds us that even during an apocalypse, there's something more dangerous than the undead lurking around every corner: other survivors. Resources are scarce, and desperate times bring out the worst in some, while others take a dark pleasure in chaos.

The special effects are skillfully done and add to the film's quality. Certain zombies, like the abandoned baby, are especially haunting. Although we're seeing more child zombies in recent films, not every director takes the risk of showing humanity's youngest transformed into such horrific figures.

The ending may not surprise seasoned fans of the genre; it's predictable but leaves on a cliffhanger. It's my hope that a sequel will explore what happens next, turning Apocalypse Z into a saga like 28 Days Later and other notable zombie series.

In sum, if you enjoy classic zombie horror with compelling human relationships, Apocalypse Z is definitely worth a watch.

This Spanish film, based on a book, focuses on one survivor's efforts to join his sister and her family who have fled the zombie apocalypse. I was impressed at how resourceful he is, repeatedly coming up with clever ideas to solve problems, starting with the diving gear and ending with an ingenious method of getting safely past a large number of zombies. As is usual in this genre, he has to avoid both the flesh eaters and dangerous human survivors, but unlike many other zombie films, there is no gratuitous violence. Indeed, the death count is relatively low (for the genre), but this doesn't compromise the action or the tension. I also liked his commitment to his cat. There may be a subtle political message in the film, which is not surprising, given when it was made. I don't normally watch zombie films which are not set in America, but I'm glad I watched this one, and I'd give it a 7 out of 10.

For anyone who enjoys this genre, like I do, I'd definitely recommend it.

Considering that this isn't a series like *The Walking Dead*, where every detail can be explored at length and the story unfolds at a slower pace, it's no small feat to compress all the events into just 1 hour and 50 minutes. Yet, I feel this movie managed it impressively.

It explained the death of Manel's wife, established an initial bond that led to the main goal of reuniting with his family, showed the food scarcity he faced while trying to feed both himself and his cat, and included the usual mishaps you'd expect in this type of film. It all wraps up with a scene clearly hinting at a sequel, so if this does well with audiences, I think we'll see a part two.

Great production overall, and I definitely didn't feel it was time wasted.

The previews I had seen had me excited for this movie but what should have been a suspenseful experience, instead had me shouting at my screen about how dumb the protagonist is.

The protagonist of this film May very well be one of the most aggravatingly inept main characters I've ever had the displeasure of watching. He spends the entire movie with a shocked face, never adapting to his situation. He always chooses incorrectly in pivotal moments like sticking his head out to stare at the bad guys or following the noise that is clearly a zombie until he alerts them.

This film was a disappointment.

This movie consists of nothing but cliches. Pull a bunch of scenes from other zombie movies (and the cat in the box from The Alien), add bad acting and simmer in slow and lackluster pace of a modern TV series with excessively prolonged dialogs and unnecessary scenes. Ugh! I almost fell asleep by the middle of it.

The only bright spot was the dirt bike. But even here this movie lets you down. What do you think when you see a combination of zombie apocalypse and a lone survivor on a motorcycle? Days Gone, of course! But instead of a treacherous journey on his steed through half the Spain, the protagonist rides the bike for about 3 minutes (two of them through empty highways- where are all the abandoned cars?) and then dumps it.

Boring and cheap, cheap and boring. I want my evening back!

If you didn't know, this movie is actually based on a spanish book with the same name. In fact, it's actually a book trilogy (The Beginning of the End, Dark Days and The Wrath of the Just) but this movie only adapts the first book, so sequels are probably planned.

Personally, I love the books, especially the first one and last one. And, while it's been a certainly long time since I last read them, I remember enough to know that this movie isn't as good as the book it's based on. Now, most of the events are portrayed similarly to the book, but a part of what made the book good and different from other pieces of Zombie fiction is the atmosphere it created. In the book, Manel(the protagonist) was always afraid to leave his house, there was this atmosphere where Zombies were taken in a much darker way, and everything is shown in more detail like Manel getting the Harpoon or the Neoprene suit. Getting out of his house for even a minute was a big journey in the book, and a good part of the book takes place on Manel's house. Instead, this movie features Manel easily going around the city like an action hero, and skims right past the previously mentioned things (he does get the Harpoon and Neoprene, but they don't put much focus on it). This isn't necessarily bad by itself, but then again, where the book was a 10 for me, this movie is a 7, which is still a positive score.

Now, it may seem unfair to reduce the movie's score by 3 whole points just because of this. But my other problem with it is the actors. The guy they got for Manel does a decent job and he looks the way I imagined him to look. But everybody else? Meh. I got nothing against Spain actors, but they are admittedly less actorally skilled than other, more mainstream actors, and you can notice it in this film during some of the more emotional moments. The biggest outlier for me is the guy they got for Viktor Pritchenko. He looks nothing like I imagined him to look, and his acting skill in this movie is pretty mediocre in my opinion, no offense to the guy who played him. Like, they can get away with this for this movie and maybe even Dark Days, but if they want to adapt The Wrath of the Just they need much better actors for it. I don't want to spoil what happens in that book in this review, but just know that it requires good actors capable of acting through emotional moments. There's also a certain antagonist in that book that probably also requires a good actor to play him, yet they will probably get a nobody to play him and he'll have no "aura" as a villain.

About the movie itself, I'd say it is pretty good. The action there is is more brutal than I expected (that's a good thing by the way) and it still adapts most plot points from the book, so it's still fun to see them being played out in the big screen because it makes me nostalgic. The first few minutes are kind of rough to get through, but it picks up after 20 or so minutes. Personally I recommend the book way more than this movie, but it's still a fun watch

It was a decent enough tv level zombie show, with decent enough main character and a cat. But it's pretty much the same story we've seen over 100 episodes without the stupid kingdoms of the walking dead.

We'll apart from the Ukrainian baddies.

The Characters have pretty much zero arc. They're much the same as they were at the beginning of the movie and it just stops dead in a cliffhanger at the end. Intriguing enough but is there an episode next week to resolve it? Is there a part 2, cos if there is they need to up their game a bit. We all love the thrill of the world build but we've seen this world hundreds of times now so what are you bringing to it?

There were some nice details. The cat was good, the loving sister with insight was good, the wetsuit and bite armour was good, It wasn't nothing but importantly it wasn't something either.

And we got a few smart people doing stupid things, notably the hostage on the boat who when untied and ungagged decided the best course of action was to make a lot of yelling noise attracting the attention of the guards instead of escape. No one finds this sort of writing entertaining but filmmakers still insist on giving us these terrible plot details. Be better.

All in all I thought this was a better effort than most zombie films of the last decade. It didn't really do anything new or ground breaking, but it also didn't fall into many of the pitfalls that other films in the genre have. The main character (and his cat) was likeable, and generally made good decisions throughout the film. Many mid to low budget zombie movies are ruined because characters do the dumbest things imaginable. It had a good lead up to the actual outbreak, some good scenes of the early chaos, and eventually settled into the kind of "survive and find a safe place" beats that fans of the genre expect. The setting changes enough to keep it interesting, and I found myself really caring that our hero and the people he groups up with along the way made it through. The cinematography and acting were good. The english dub had decent voice acting which is always nice if you dont want to read subtitles. If you don't like zombie survival films, this likely won't change your mind. If you do, this one will scratch the itch.
