not bad

From the cinematic point of view, this is a pretty good movie, and it shows excellent craftsmanship and directing skills. This is a showcase of capabilities of Russian filmmakers and production facilities that won't get unnoticed by international distribution and producing circles.

There are, however, numerous inconsistencies and illogical situations in the script that require a HUGE suspension of disbelief for people who are familiar with how the subway system functions.

Other than that, there are normal for this genre stereotyped characters, a love triangle, and, of course, a catastrophe itself that changes everything...

MY REVIEW: A Nice Ride!!

Metro. It's a Russian disaster movie based on the simple plot of how one day a metro train gets hit by the unexpected flood in a tunnel and how few key characters make themselves to see the sun light again despite all odds against them. What drives this metro are two key factors; technical finesse in showing the flood hitting the metro and few characters worth rooting for. The scene where water strikes the passengers in the compartments is a technical marvel. A small fresh love story, a broken marriage and a love triangle, all key connections and conflicts between the key characters are done nicely. Camera work and art direction in showing the haunting images of the disaster is astounding. However, acting wise there was ample possibility of improvement. I am going with good 7 out of 10 for Metro. It never reaches to the height of perfection but by doing few things up right, it makes you feel the experience of a disaster.

Stunning visuals - awful screenplay

It's like the Russian version of a typical Hollywood disaster movie. ("Daylight" is very similar to this one.) So the characters are clichéd, the escape at the end is quite unrealistic, there are no conflict between the characters, everybody just wants to survive. The acting is almost amateur.

On the contrary, the directing, the cinematography and the visual effects are amazing, they're even better than in many Hollywood movies. The main catastrophe and the immediate consequences are shown in a quite impressive way, almost better than in any other disaster movie before.

Because of this, I can recommend this one for watching, but don't expect anything better than a clichéd story.

Surprisingly entertaining drama movie made in Russia

I discovered this Russian subway drama thriller in a shopping site. I thought to give it a chance and I don't regret.

What I saw exceeded by far my expectations. There is a good balance between real action scenes and funny dialogs. Then the director mixed the dramatic countdown very well with the other mentioned ingredients. The result is an entertaining and solid drama thriller that can be set no doubt in line with many other Hollywood films of this genre. It was never boring and the pace just right,

Even my wife enjoyed it and thumbs up for all the actors who delivered a respectable performance,

If you like subway movies check out Unstoppable with Denzel Washington.

For all these reasons it merits a solid 7/10.

Hmm .. ... .

When I watched this movie, I was going to university by subway.

The subway trains in Baku were also like the movie, now there are new and modern ones. At that time, the movie was exciting for me.

When disaster film and soap opera fuse.

One night Sergeich notices water in the underground train tunnel, and informs the necessary personnel, but they assure him everything is in order and that they are aware of the water.

The film then cuts to the beautiful Irina (Svetlana Khodchenkova) in a sensual moment with a handsome man, Vlad Konstantinov (Anatoliy Belyy). It is then revealed she is actually a married woman, and having an affair with Vlad. Vlad is a wealthy businessman with an attitude, and is putting pressure on Irina to leave her husband.

Her husband is surgeon Andrei Garin (Sergey Puskepalis), and they have a young daughter, Ksenya (Anfisa Wistinghausen). Andrei suspects his wife is having an affair, hides it from Ksenya. Due to unforeseen events, Andrei and Ksenya take the Metro to her school. When Vlad finds himself in a traffic jam, he decides to park his car and also take the Metro instead.

The water in the tunnel rises quickly and when the train driver notices this, he slams the breaks, causing the train to derail and crash into the water. This crash scene was very well done. From here it becomes a survival movie. This was almost like The Poseidon Adventure on a train.

As a disaster movie, there's much to love about the film. It is your typical survival story where survivors of a disaster must overcome obstacles in order to survive. There's also well crafted suspense. Unfortunately, at times, the conflict between Andrei and Vlad overshadow the disaster element and the fight for survival.

The film also dishes up plenty of melodrama similar to a soap opera, but it was nevertheless entertaining. My main criticism is their attempts at clichéd Hollywood-style humour, which simply did not belong in this movie. This humour ruined much of the suspense. I also didn't like the way they made Vlad into a bit of an ass during the final act. Yes, the man is screwing another man's wife, but he became a hero on the train to some extent, only to act like a complete idiot during the final act. This was uncalled for, and I suppose the only reason they did this, was for the viewer not to root for him. I nevertheless still rooted for him, and he actually provided valid reasoning for Irina's adultery.

The film runs 135 minutes long, and I feel it could have been shorter had they decided to cut much of the conflict between the two men. This is a survival story, after all. Regardless, 'Metro' was still a pleasant watch which didn't have the predictable ending most Hollywood movies do.

Very nice Russian disaster movie

In Metro, a breach in the old subway system of Moscow lets water pour in, trapping an entire rush hour subway train underground. The crash scenes are spectacular and the rest of the film follows a small group of survivors trying to get to the surface.

This is what Stallone's Daylight should have been. There is no heroic saviour that solves everyone's problems, but everybody for themselves. The tension, the interaction between the characters, the very beautiful Svetlana Khodchenkova and Katerina Shpitsa and a kind of over the top coincidence involving a love triangle, they all bring quality to the film.

At more than two hours long, I can say that I did not feel the desire to fast forward even once, which is very rare. The Russian references have that sad/funny feel about them. You could laugh at them if you didn't have to go through them yourself, and then it's kind of sad, but you appreciate the recognition.

Bottom line: get yourself a decent translation (unfortunately I did not have one) and watch Metro. Its flaws are minimal, mainly related to acting, and you can easily enjoy the film from start to end.

Catastrophy underground

Chilling images of flooded metro tunnels and dead bodies lying and floating around after the incident. In the midst of it, a rather mediocre relationship triangle between father, daughter and mother's lover, and a little love story between a young couple on the side. Convincing acting, but no more than that.

Ridiculous plot line

So, a flood occurs in a major Russian city, effecting the Metro. Coincidentally, the husband, whose wife is having an affair with, ends up trapped with her lover. Do writers pull plot lines out of hats?

The dubbed voices, ye Gods, I'm sure the original actors voices were light years past the monosyllabic morons that dubbed this. For once I'd prefer to read subs. The Asylum could have made a better job of it. Avoid at all costs, Shark side of the Moon is Citizen Cane compared to this travesty.. The daughter of the unfaithful wife, has now been rescued from drowning by the lover and husband, Dear God, I can't take any more of this contrived dross.

"Safety first" (c)

Accustomed to the fact that in modern Russian cinematograph there are very, very few good films, I did not expect much from this either. The 6.5 rating only reinforced this concern. As a result, I was very surprised that I was very wrong. This is a very good movie. Not without it's small roughness and a few clichés, but definitely deserves rating above average. Generally maybe 8. But for me, as I was pleased that I caught a good Russian film - totally 9. P.S.: Never ignore dangerous signs.

Decent Russian disaster movie.

I found this to be a decent disaster movie. The story is interesting with a subway cart gets crashes and the tunnels began to flooded. It becomes suspenseful with the characters trying to survive in the environment and the flooding. The movie does have some illogical situations and moments in it. But it is pretty entertaining to see them trying to survive in this situations. There's a couple of plotlines that are rather generic and predictable that isn't interesting at all. A couple of characters are rather generic in this type of movie, but some of them are likable like the two young couples. Also, the dubbing is pretty bad in current areas of the movie.

Surprising

I found this movie while browsing Prime Video late at night. I really didn't expected to enjoy it!

It's a simple story movie with some breathtaking screenplay, well done! Kinda sad for the editing and cuts going so fast sometimes.

Anyway, a nice disaster movie to watch when don't want to think too much and enjoy your evening!

A decent movie

Other then the flooding of the tunnel, few will forget the scenes of gridlock traffic. And some fairly amusing scenes when the authorities tried to cut off film coverage. But overall a rewarding movie to watch. The special effects were good, although I thought the slo-mo scenes inside the crash were perhaps a bit too long, but certainly showed how people can get thrown around in a crash. In some ways a nod to Hollywood, with a love interest, a budding attraction with two of the characters who had not met until the subway, the husband and the man who bedded his wife, the daughter and even throwing in a cute dog. And they built up the tension at just the right points. It was dubbed, but perhaps not the best choices for the vocals. In it nice once in a while to get a disaster movie from a different perspective, and Russian movies can certainly do that if they have a decent budget. It is not a documentary on how a subway works, and one has to suspend belief that the control room was real for a massive system.

Passable Russian movie

Entertaining movie, dull actors, predictable story.

Seems a depiction of real life story, good enough to entertain a couple of hours. Maybe a bit tad too long. Nonetheless, worth seeing.

It was average!

The plot is about a metro rail passing under a river tunnel where, due to negligence in maintenance, the river water floods into the tunnel.

The plot is about ok, but it could've been a little improved, the metro driver where he tried to stop the metro seeing the river water breaking into the tunnel, it was so ridiculing seeing the chaotic derailing of the metro.

The overused story idea was not that entertaining, specially if you are into movies and consume movies often.

Overall, this movie is available for free with advertisements on YouTube and other OTT platforms, so not that big of a deal, watch it if you are having the time.

Russian masterpiece

Russians just proved that if they want a job done - they will do it at highest possible levels and beyond. I'm lucky - I know Russian language since I was a kid and I really enjoyed watching this movie on native language. Everything in this movie is interesting and sometimes very shocking, you will find yourself in doubt "how they managed to build a such amazing camera works or spec effects?". Trust me, there are plenty of them and some I have never seen before, not even in Hollywood movies. You can't spoil anything in this movie as the name of the movie says everything about it. It is movie about disaster, pain and a lot of fear and this is recorded at highest levels. Find a time and watch this masterpiece - you won't regret.

Even without a metro drama - still a decent drama.

A touching story all over the two hours, not just in the end. Intrigues - all over the movie, not just in the start. The end of the story - it may end at any moment, and it would still be great. No particular connection to Moscow, Russia, subterranean train - it can be anywhere, any time. People meet each other, struggle, about to die, struggle, survive, get to know each other on a new perspective.

It's a "must pause" every time you go to the bathroom. 'Cause even without the "subway drama", it's still a deepest drama, and it would rise your sentiments to a whole new level. 9 out of 10, but it starts from 9.

Some glaring pace issues. But other than that.

What a beast of a movie. Only weak part of the movie was the periodic nonsensical stopping an escape for your life to chit chat, allowing things, bad things to catch up with you. I know it's just a movie though. However the stopping and going was maddening. Like you KNOW things are going to get worse before they get better. Put on your big boy pants and run like hell. Dont trudge. Aside from this, it was an awesome movie. The disaster scene was a human cacophony of chaos I haven't seen filmed like that since the matrix 20 years ago.
