Slow Burn but Engaging

It's a slow burn but it doesn't get boring. The story of Mike Atlas is engaging made more complicated because he has a wife and daughter who're clueless about what's happening to him, and who are just about to give up on him.

The viewer, like Mike, is bent on pursuing the leads that would jog his memory to remember his past and uncover his mistake.

It's a typical German production quite competent in its execution. The cinematography is great; the script is tight, well-written. The characters come alive with their own backstories.

The actors do justice to the roles they are assigned to give life to. Special mention to Max Riemelt, Melika Foroutan and Carlo Ljubek.

Thankfully it's only six episodes, not the usual eight

It held my interest from the start and watched Sleeping Dog over two nights. There were times when I questioned certain situations that were lacking in probability as when the daughter of a police officer gets in a stranger's car because he says he knows her father. Some people in authority have shifty eyes and know one helps each other out. There never seems to be much traffic in Berlin and a scene where one party says we have to go to a place more quiet but they are the only ones in a park along a river. Yes, one elderly man is in the distance,so what. A young attractive district attorney is always acting like an undercover investigator running down alleys or entering dark cellars. She claims s she witness a murder and asks Should I got to the police ?

... solid-crime-drama from-Germany

... it's really good, definitely with that European-pulse... it goes at a steadily-fueled-pace... all actors filling their characters-parts exceptionally-well... you can watch it once again, even shortly after first-viewing, and it readily holds interest

... there are numerous Euro-crime-dramas with differences in the genre distinctly flavored by all the large number of varying countries producing their own individualized works.. and they have risen all together, each producing hi-quality streaming-experiences... regardless of requiring subtitles, as they to have become better-experiences... could-shoulda-been a good-couple-several season-series.

Decent one time slow burn

Yesterday finished German series 'Schlafende Hunde' aka 'Sleeping Dog'

It's based on Israeli series.

It's a slow burn crime thriller.

Start was confusing, Viewers get confused just like main character.

There are many characters and everyone has backstories, Which are sometimes unnecessary and doesn't add-up anything to main plot, it's just for filler.

Main plot is okay.

It has some typical tropes.

Suspended cop with Amnesia, portrayed as bad dad and bad husband, has messed up personal life, looking for redemption and trying to remember things.

They add-up some german tropes like LGBTQ, Racism, Nazi angle and social commentary on that.

Cinematography is good. Decent acting.

I would say, it's a decent one time watch.

Available on Netflix.

good copper tale from germany

In english, it's sleeping dog, but in german, it's schlafende hunde. A six episode arc, with two directors and three writers. According to imdb, this is a remake of the israeli series exchange principle, which had three chapters. Atlas, a former cop, is living on the streets. But has not given up trying to solve an old cold case. He breaks into offices after hours, and tries to stay under the radar. Andergast, the public prosecutor, also wants to reopen the case, but for very different reasons. Lots of mysteries and questions. Witnesses that won't come forward, for various reasons. Some are getting knocked off. They seem to be up against powerful families that stick together, and will do anything to succeed. Both atlas and andergast have people helping them and people working against them. Lots of suspense and drama. Mostly good stuff! Although one of the cops held up evidence, a hand gun, while wearing gloves. But he held the gun right where the suspect's fingerprints would be !! Bad cop.

Don't believe the bad reviews

Yes, it starts off a bit confusing, as the plot is quite complex. That pays off afterwards thought. It's a German conspiracy thriller with good twists and you sitting on the TV trying to figure out, who is responsible. Even after a few episodes, it's hard to understand what happened. For me personally, that's what gives a good thriller the suspense. For some people it might be confusing, as you have to be awake and concentrated at times. I liked this show.

The acting is really good, especially Peri Baumeister, who acts as the wife of ex-cop Atlas and himself, Max Riemelt, do a great job here.

I'd reccomend the series to everyone, who likes Scandi-Noir-TV!

Disappointed

The main character and some of the other characters were great. Their acting was good and their storyline was alright.

But sadly Jule and Tom totally ruined the series. They were bland and their acting was off. Their storyline was also really bad, totally unnecessary, nothing happened really.

Honestly didn't even understand if you were actually supposed to like them through the whole series. They were totally unlikeable, it doesn't match up at all since all the other characters somehow had something that was worth watching.

Ended up skipping several scenes with them simply because they were too boring. :(

The end of the series was sadly not good in my opinion.

It's sad since the rest of the series was alright, really wish the series would've focused more on the main characters, his story and the people that were close to him.

PS. Tom and Jule looked like siblings which also made it weird.

A Gripping but Unoriginal Crime Thriller

Quality German crime drama

Schlafende Hunde is a very well made German crime drama about a traumatized former police officer in search for what has caused his trauma. His story unfolds after the suicide of an innocent prisoner, for who's conviction he was largely responsible.

The story is original and told very well in six episodes. Every episode reveals a little more of the final plot. Build-up, scenario acting and dialogues are just fine. This series shows an intelligent combination of psychological drama, conspiracy and an atmosphere in which there's hardly any clarity as to who can be trusted.

A bit of a slow burner but just right. Definitely recommended.

Okay at best.

Storyline was okay, but told a hundred times by now (main character with amnesia, bad dad looking for redemption,...). You will not be surprised at any point, because it is so cookie cutter written. Also I feel like they did what german productions do to all scripts: Add some LGBT+ representation and racism/nazi themes that do nothing for the plot just because. I doubt it was in there before and REALLY alienating to see some their social commentary ham-fisted in.

It might keeps you interested enough to stay for the final, but in the end you get a lukewarm showdown and an eye roll inducing resolution.

Some actors did a decent job, most not so much. You could have cut half without losing anything, so this might should have been a better B-movie.

I can not recommend the show to anyone but diehard fans of german television crime series like "Tatort". You get some nice shots of Berlin, tho.

Twists and Turns

This series has so many twists and turns you think you're on a merry-go-round. What keeps it going is the wonderful acting from everyone involved. Not just the main actors, but everyone is marvelous. Given the context of the series, it's unexpected to find such good acting. Equally outstanding is the photography and the music.

Of all the good features, it's the story that compels viewing. In about 90% of the films/series I watch I can tell you the ending right away. But this one fooled me, pretty much right up to the end. Only in the last hour of the final episode did I figure it out, and that gives you some idea of how good it is.

Good for a Boring Weekend

Nothing else to watch? Give this one a try. I stuck with it only because it's 6 episodes, otherwise, hu-hu. Like Bourne ID, it starts with the plot already happening and develops through the series by adding back-flash to the story. It is a German show so the acting is different and the English dubbing doesn't help, still, better than reading. And then you have the hypnotic eyes. I'm the typical guy that doesn't understand the obsession some women have on eyes until now. Jule is played by Luise Von Finckh who has incredible blue eyes; it's as if I got drunk and I see double vision of "The Blue Marble".

When the movie start?

I kept watching and watching waiting for the movie to start the plot but that never came. There is not a strong story here. Nothing seems to to connected to anything, nor a police story, nor a legal story, not a drama and not a intrigue or action movie. Actors are not that bad, way too much dirty places, beggars and low life people showed unnecessary for the movie. The picture colors are OK and -perhaps some of the city shows ok but nothing remarkable. Sorry really a time that make the movie to be end with something that make sense but at the end only a young lawyer was the hero.

Waist of my time. Not recommended to anyone.

Slow and Confusing

This series is about a guy who is suffering from PTSD. He is a cop who is now off somewhere. He has lost some memory, especially that of an investigation and trial where his evidence sent a man to prison. The man later dies from an apparent suicide. He slit his wrists and carved something in Arabic on his chest. The problem here is the characters are so dull and uninspiring. Atlas, who is taciturn, his daughter, his wife and on and on. I am trying to make up my mind whether to watch the second episode. The case he has honed in on doesn't seem to be worth the trouble. There are some Mi-easterners who pose a threat to him and those around him.

Quite Interesting Show

The show is quite interesting it has mysteries right fron the start, the cast put a great effort in making this characters unique from one another, throughout the series you gonna ask yourself who is really the one that doing this that, upon watching the series in continuation answers from the mysteries will unveil, but there is some unpredictable scenes that really shocked me, and its really great for this kind of series. It is shorter than expected and i wish they extended the episodes so we can hear the stories beyond the main cast.

Still, overall the show is great max riemelt and the other cast really put their effort throughout this series and we appreciated it.

Wish it will become available in more countries c'mon netflix..

Beyond confusing!

This starts off by dropping you into a story that seemingly has already started. There is little or no context to any of the characters or the narrative. The writers try to remedy this with flashbacks, but since they appear to be divorced from the narrative and appear irrelevant, they serve only to create more confusion. The scenes seem to be stuck together in some random manner, so continuity of the story becomes impossible. The acting is not great. Without having seen the original Israeli series on which this is based, it's impossible to compare. However, on its own, this is just boring, slow moving and a waste of time.

Confusing, shallow, boring

I did something with this series that I've never done before... I gave up in the early part of episode 3 and just looked up what happened online. I could not muscle through any more than I already had to digest. Don't get me wrong a lot of the acting is good, the premise is interesting but it fell flat. The promising nature of this show was appealing and I really gave it chance but had to cut my losses. Underdeveloped characters, meaningless side stories that really never went anywhere. I'd like to think that I am a subtitle veteran and there were parts of this series where I had to stop and rewind in order to keep up with the conversation. Embarrassing and really frustrating. I would not recommend this.

Sleeping dog is Just that

A disaster of a series. It is not cohesive in the telling. Many disparate string stories show up that are disconnected from the viewer, putting the load of connecting the story on the viewer. Some never connect which is or are easy to miss. And there is no ending because nothing makes sense at the end.

Credit goes to the actors who act and say their lines as if they know what they are doing in that scene with the right emotional tone.

Somebody above the acting tried to keep the real story away from the viewers so well the ending is totally anticlimactic and does not make any sense.

Horrible put together series!!!
