SHUTTER is a Malayalam thriller that attacks the false morality of a middle class Kozhikodan Muslim male who wouldn't even let his daughter talk on the mobile with her friends. I recommend this film, it is one of the better Malayalam movies of recent times along with EE ADUTHA KAALATHU. Not only does it expose the hypocrisy of middle class Malayalis, but it portrays Kerala's infamous drinking culture with great hilarity.
LAL (not Mohanlal) has been lucky enough to work in a number of leading roles in the last 5 years starting with SALT N PEPPER. I guess the indifference of superstars like Mammoty and Mohanlal towards independent filmmakers has made them turn to actors like LAL. SREENIVASAN is perfectly cast as a cynical filmmaker. The rest of the cast is at least above average.
The film does suffer from some major problems like - the sub-plot with Srinivasan as the cynical filmmaker is more interesting than the main plot. Secondly, the screenplay could have been tighter. After a point, it just goes on and on with Vinay Fort bumbling around without any resolution. The scenes between Lal and Sajitha Madathil inside the closed shop is just not interesting enough.
But even then, this is a very interesting film. I look forward to more from director John Paul (who plays a guest role in this movie).

I have seen only a few Malayalam movies. 'Shutter' shines them all. Such a simple story yet so intriguing. Perfectly crafted. Malayalam people know about cinema. Kudos to everyone involved. I can only wish this kind of cinema reaches more people. This country has some real talent in it.
The makers have taken a very simple story on a current affair and done wonders to it. The simplistic approach which creates spine-chilling thrills is the reason i rate it a good 8.3/10.
Lal is good, Vinay Fort is better but Sajitha Madathil is best. She is the best performer in the movie with the right demeanor for a prostitute. I can only imagine the improvisation she carried out. Supporting cast is good enough. Sreenivasan is wasted, moreover his performance doesn't impress.
The screenplay is very slow in the beginning, but a time comes when things start moving so fast, your full concentration is required. Mostly the times when characters think what would happen next - those are splendid. Music isn't that great because it doesn't have any. Cinematography is good, casting is very good and overall a very fine thriller.
BOTTOM LINE: Must watch! Highly recommended!
Can be watched with a typical Indian family? YES
Profanity: Mild | Nudity: No | Sex: Implied | Vulgarity: Mild | Smoking/Alcohol: Strong | Violence/Gore: Mild | Drugs: No

Wonderful movie. Starts very slowly, seems boring at first. But the events happens quickly. Lal & Vinay forty is amazing. You will be thrilling when at the end. Eagerly watch what will happen next. Totally a great movie. Must watch.
I was about to stop it watching when I found too much boring and non-sense dialogues. Yet I gave it a try because it seemed to me that something is happening without anyone's knowledge. Thus the consequence make the movie full of tension and psychological pressure. While you watch this movie keep in mind the first half will be boring but on't ignore a moment, a scene. Just watch patiently.
Rasheed (Lal) deliver a great performance of a father who is locked in a closed shop with a sex woman, whom he liked while he was drunk. It was his most bad luck the shop become closed by one of his known auto driver, which was done in a consequence made by the situation.
The ending handled very well. Such an almost perfect script. Almost perfect casting. Almost everyone did very well, especially Lal.
