A Nice Family Movie With A Good Message

Some reviewers here are bashing this movie because they say it is overtly religious. Not true at all and you shouldn't listen to them. It deals with being kind to people who aren't easy to like. It centers around a play around the birth of Jesus. Hello!!!!! That is what Christmas is about. It does not in the slightest shove converting to Christianity down your throat like some have inaccurately stated.

It's a nice family friendly movie that isn't filled with adult language. If you want a feel good story with a good message then this is the movie for you. Will it win any Hollywood awards? No. It has a decent story and some scenes that made me chuckle and even tug at the heart strings a bit.

Don't listen to the naysayers. They probably prefer the blood and guts movies anyway.

Mixed bag

I really disliked the first hour or so. It try's really hard to duplicate the "Christmas Story" vibe but fails repeatedly to evoke any positive nostalgia. Also fails at humor. Everything seems very contrived and lacks any real emotion. I expect the "bad" kids to be a little over the top bad, but they should have some substance behind them. Everybody is two dimensional.

Then we get into the putting together the pageant and plenty of holes in the plot here too. But when we get to the retelling of the Christmas story I must confess that my heartstrings were pulled. There was a meaningful Christmas message that evolved from a pretty drawn out schmaltzy production. If I had turned it off after half an hour as I was tempted to do it would have gotten a 2. The last part brought it up to 7.

A Future Christmas Classic

The adaptation of Barbara Robinson's novel, directed by Dallas Jenkins, becomes one of those future great Christmas classics thanks to the charm of a script that is fun, emotional and full of Christmas spirit.

It stars the ever-reliable Judy Greer and a group of young actors who bring to life a nice film that entertains and excites with good fun for the whole family. This adaptation makes itself loved by transmitting its religious messages with lightness, humor, warmth, generosity, but also with the innocence of childhood that allows it to touch the most resistant fiber of any viewer, because the film never loses its intention to give you a clear, beautiful and welcoming message about the good sense of Christmas and what it represents beyond the figure of Jesus.

The good script work manages to offer moments of witty dialogue while transporting you to its spiritual duties, which end up resulting in it not being the best Christmas movie in history, but it touches your heart and makes you smile. This great achievement allows the film to feel like a great Christmas pastime and invites you to enjoy it in a family atmosphere without limitations.

An adaptation that preserves the essence of this Christmas novel and transforms it into an effective, positive, charming adaptation that is on par with a great pastime for these end-of-year festivities. A fulfilling film that will make us have a good time and will make us shed more than one tear for its gratifying and delicate staging that allows us to always be connected with this innocent, but real and bold adventure about family, belief and the power represented by the figure of Mary that makes the film so pleasant to watch on screen.

The best Christmas movie in recent memory.

Beth: "Everything is falling apart." Grace: "I'm not sure they were ever together."

And so it goes with an annual Christmas pageant, whose machinations would rival a small military exercise. It's the film adaptation of the child's book, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. And it is just as the title suggests, at least for me who thinks this is the best Christmas film in years.

Comedy and drama march together as Grace (Judy Greer) runs the annual pageant now that its usual director has been incapacitated. Grace is a good person exemplifying the best of Christian virtue, yet her values will be tested to the max with the arrival of the Herdman children, motherless ruffians notorious for being ornery and at times downright destructive.

Although Grace is inclined to accept the clan for major roles, in the absence of other volunteers, most of the town, even her children, are exclusionary of the infamous family. Thus begins the dominant motif of the subtle faith-based dramedy, the acceptance of those not like us.

As Grace uses her people and drama skills to pull off the pageant, so, too, do others see the value of listening to critics of the status quo as the Herdman's are. More destructive than anything else is their challenges to conventional wisdom, for instance, the account of the Three Wisemen delivering gifts wholly unsuited to an impoverished family. The answer of delivering a ham is perfect and indicative of the riches the Herdman's give to the clueless town in the form of vigorous opposition to the outdated norms of the Bible.

I hope I have persuaded you to try director Dallas Jenkins' The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. My tastes run from It's a Wonderful Life to Bad Santa and not faith-based films in general. Yet, I have been impressed by the quality of such Angel Productions as Sound of Freedom, Cabrini, and Bonhoeffer and now the Kingdom Story Company's Best Christmas. I'm open to new experiences.

Happy Holidays.

Another wonderful movie to watch during the christmas season

I was parusing through IMDB hoping I would find a new Christmas movie to watch every year. I read the reviews and I was instantly curious about The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. So my wife and I went to our favorite theater to see if my hunch was correct.

The writers took the time to introduce each character so we could feel as if we were in the movie with the children.

As usual there was the obligatory mean children who made the others always on edge.

As the movie progressed we not only felt sad for the bullied kids but became intrigued as to why the mean kids were bullies.

Give the movie a chance. We did. Now it will be on our Christmas must see movie list every year. 👏👏

9/10 for a Christmas movie

So I gave this a 9/10. I want everyone to know this is not a true 9/10, but instead this is based on a scale of catching the meaning of Christmas. Let's go ahead and say 10 is it's a Wonderful Life.

Tthe Best Christmas Pageant Ever" is a 9/10. I don't say this lightly. Goodness, it has been years since a movie captured the true spirit of Christmas. The spirit that makes you want to be a better person, and believe in others ability to change. That vibe is so hard to come by, but wow does this movie get it done.

Yes, it's a Christian movie, but not in a preachy way in the slightest. This movie is subtle, and wonderful, and leaves you wanting to be a better person.

Just wow. For a family Christmas movie, bravo.

Finally -- a holiday movie that works

Over the decades, our society has gone from MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET (on my IMDb list of best films) to many dozens of meet-cute pseudo romcoms that pretend to be X-mas films, and are forgotten as soon as the closing credits roll. Most if not all replete with suspicious Canadian accents. Finally, we have a film which is not original but on-point, interesting, well-written, well-acted, and impactful. They should all be like this. They won't. But they should. ((Designated "IMDb Top Reviewer." Please check out my list "167+ Nearly-Perfect Movies (with the occasional Anime or TV miniseries) you can/should see again and again (1932 to the present))

A new holiday classic!

Having read the book when I was young, I never saw too much into it that this was overtly Christian in any way. I wasn't a churchgoing kid but I knew people who did. Only a year ago did I learn that there was a whole legacy behind this, a stage musical, two literary sequels, and a 1983 TV special.

I'm not a big fan of 'faith-based' content (no matter how many I've logged implies) but on discovering that this was happening, I set aside all my hesitations in anticipation. Not only is it abundantly clear that this film adaptation faithful to the spirit of the source material but also expands upon it in a graceful manner. There's three notable segments I acknowledge, and they're all perfect.

Now I'm not gonna go watch The Chosen and harp on about it, but director Dallas Jenkins has crafted one of the best Christmas movies in recent memory. Not once does Christmas Pageant feel like it's proselytizing but it's telling the Nativity in such a manner that, in-universe, the Herdmans (aka the worst kids in the whole history of the world) are enraptured but also the unconverted take away with the logically warped way they see it.

It's the young ensemble cast who are the heart of this story, especially Beatrice Schneider as Imogene, the eldest Herdman who serves as guardian of her five siblings. The children's father allegedly left a few years earlier, and their mother works nights. She had to grow up faster than life would allow. The scene where Beth's (the protagonist) father brings a ham to the Herdman residence is perhaps the first sign that these kids aren't all bad.

The unspecified time period is beneficial to the story, in that this can happen anytime, anywhere. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is what I've been searching for for a long time, a 'faith' film that doesn't leave a bad aftertaste. This is my new holiday go-to.

Starts off slow but on the whole displays an amazing message

The film starts off rather slow and does drags in parts, specifically the bits where the mother is educating the children. I understand the reason why she is doing it but most of the viewers already know and understand the story and it kind of feels like those parts were aimed and younger kids which is fair enough because it is a Christmas movie after all.

The comedy also on the whole falls rather flat, for me the comedy wasn't very funny. Like I could see what they were trying to do but for me it didn't work.

This mixed with a few occasions of bad acting and some scenes felt a bit awkward.

With the negatives out of the way it's time for the positives, and gosh there is a lot. The whole message of the story was very powerful and emotional, the audience can really relate with what they are trying to display and despite the hermans being extremely menacing you can genuinely connect with them and really feel for their hardships in life. You can really see the Christmas magic in this movie and the strong religious themes express the magic. I would've liked to see more background information on the Herman's, I feel that would've added even more to their characters.

The reason it isn't rated higher is because I don't feel it comes anywhere close to some of the Christmas classics, a few adjustments to the film and it could've been a Christmas film to remember for a lifetime.

A new favorite!

This movie is so funny and heartwarming as well. My family and I watched this in theater and we enjoyed it from beginning to end. This is definitely a film for the whole family.

Dallas Jenkins did a great job directing and putting this together. There is even a few cast members from "The Chosen" as well. So, that was pretty neat especially since we've watched "The Chosen". Both the kids and the adult cast members did a great job acting in this as well.

I'll admit, we have not read the book. But this has inspired us to do so. We went in blind not knowing the story. So, this was definitely a welcome surprise. We will be going back to watch it again in theater. I'd definitely recommend this one.

I did not find this movie funny

I really had high hopes for this film, and was ready to laugh as I did for A Christmas Story. Although the acting and pace were good, none of the jokes landed for me. The story is key, and it does move the film and present the characters with broad intentions, especially the bad family.

I am not a driector, but maybe it needed a few lessons from A Christmas Story, which may have benefited from some of the individual character insight which I felt this movie lacked. Although it will not be on my top ten list for future Christmas films, I do give it a 6 to show that the other parts of the movie are worth while to watch.

I had high hopes, but alas

"I loved reading the book as a kid, and the TV version with Loretta Swit became one of my holiday favorites. I was so excited to learn they were remaking it. I found it barely watchable, unfortunately. It's so broad and over the top, the acting is hammy, and the pace is lugubrious. All of the charm of the source material is gone.

One of the biggest issues with this version is how it tries too hard to be funny, sacrificing the genuine heart and humor of the original. The characters feel like caricatures rather than real people, making it impossible to connect with them. The Herdmans, who are supposed to be rough around the edges but ultimately lovable, come across as mean-spirited and cartoonish. Instead of being mischievous kids who shake things up in a small-town Christmas pageant, they're portrayed as one-dimensional troublemakers, losing the nuance that made their journey meaningful in the book.

The pacing drags so much that even the more emotional moments feel forced and unearned. Scenes that should be touching or humorous are stretched out or overplayed, draining them of any impact. Instead of drawing the viewer in, the sluggish storytelling left me counting the minutes until it was over.

The production design doesn't help either. While the original TV version had a cozy, small-town charm that matched the story's tone, this remake feels oddly lifeless. The sets are uninspired, and the costumes look more like a bad school play than a heartfelt holiday production. It's as if the filmmakers didn't trust the strength of the story and tried to overcompensate with excessive gimmicks.

Overall, this remake misses the mark entirely. It lacks the warmth, wit, and charm that made The Best Christmas Pageant Ever a beloved classic. It's disappointing that such a timeless story could be reduced to something so forgettable."

The Cutest Remake Of The Year

LIKES:

Cute

Moves At a Good Pace

Funny And Wholesome

Good Acting

Realistic With Modern Sheen

Message Is Strong As Ever

Summary: The trailers portrayed this movie as a cute dive into a simpler time before the Internet exploded out of control. This remake is an example of taking history and bringing it to the present and capturing the wholesome nature of what was an adventure for most. It's not flashy, it's not state-of-the-art, and it's just feeling like living in a town that is fixated on traditions no matter their intended purpose. The movie lets the narrator tell the story, feeling like a television special, with an engaging teller to pull you into the tale. Its humor relies on relevance and timing, which had my fellow audience members frequently laughing and doesn't rely on wit or engaging quotes to do the work. A realistic overtone helps to keep this film in that cute sort of sitcom role and helps instill some emotions that hit me harder in this approach than the artificial feeling Hallmark injects its movies with every year. The real heart lies in the strong messages this movie brings, with the very message of Christmas radiating out, but again feeling genuine and perfect for the holiday season. As for the acting, the entire cast plays the roles well and makes this community of varying personalities match closely to communities I have lived in previously.

DISLIKES:

Preachy

Missing Character Development Completeness

A Tad Too Simplistic

Predictable

Missing The Full Fleshed Out Finesse

Too Many Characters in A Short Amount Of Time

Summary: Yet, the movie still suffers from what you might expect of a drama film such as this one. It's preachy at times, getting caught up in quoting the bible and taking asides to paraphrase the passages that it can get a bit too Hollywood. The movie's simplicity will be incredible for the key audience groups of family, while those looking for something more will find it tireless and boring, perhaps thinking this would have been best left to a straight-to-home release. The predictable plot is great for the family night-in but suffers from the lack of depth in character development and full immersion into the process. I felt there were too many characters and not enough time to fully invest in the characters nor give you time for build-up and gradual progression to the goal. It's a little too simplistic, lacking the full depth for just bites of the inevitable conclusion coming at the movie's end. I guess that's what religious-heavy movies are known for, but I would have liked just a bit more storytelling baked into the heartfelt message contained in this movie.

The verdict: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is a remake that sticks to the foundation without being a soulless carbon copy of the film before it. It is a delightful production that teaches the meaning of the holiday in classy, fun, and adorable tones without relying too much on the cliché theatrics and forced acting that some programs do. A wholesome and realistic edge works in this film, using just enough movie shine to glam it up without costing anything away from the goal of this movie. Yet, the simplistic direction of this movie is also a big limitation in terms of unique flavor and wow factors that one might be looking for in this movie, The short run time might get you out of the theater faster, but the storytelling suffers in regards to shallower character development, limited buildup of impasses, and a rather lackluster finish in terms of any real stakes to have you on the edge of your seat. It feels like a big-budget version of a Hallmark film at times, and those who like said movies should come out and see this movie (a killer youth group film). With all this in mind, my scores for this film are:

Adventure/Comedy/Drama/: 7.0 Movie Overall: 6.0.

Feel Good Christmas Story. Funny. A bit too TV-ish for the Big Screen.

The heartwarming story has a classic Christmas film feel. There are some very touching storylines and a few very funny moments. It's about the real story of Christmas, the birth of Jesus told in a pageant--so that is a BIG factor in the wide variety of reviews here. MOSTLY GOOD. I do think, for most Americans, the Christian story is appealing. If not, you may enjoy the touching human story here about kids in school, parenting, volunteering, and how negative some folks can be toward both change and prejudice. But, it must also be said, there are some "LIFETIME Movie" moments here that made me roll my eyes. Their criticism here is that they take a cheesy approach to portraying the 1970s. I wish it had more "authentic" elements, like 2022's Coda or 2024 The Wild Robot. The Wild Robot rates a 10/10 on authenticity and being heartwarming. This film is an 8 to me. I am glad I saw it. I think most families will enjoy this heartwarming film. It's fun to see in the theater, but it would work at home too.

Great family movie. Hits all the right notes for a Christmas film!

I'm a dad, in my late 40s. Took my 10year old daughter to see this and we both enjoyed it. I grew up doing these plays in church. I found myself welling up at all the right places. This movie focuses on baby Jesus and the Christmas nativity story, but the emotions come from standing up for what's right and putting others first. It also tackles how the nativity story can be glossed over as a nice photo - this asks some funny questions that had me laughing out loud.

Really like the story telling structure and narrator. The child actors were great.

Originally I saw the trailer and thought it looked cheesy. I was wrong. Don't judge a book by its cover - also the point of the film.

Very happy to take my daughter to see this film and will recommend it to friends. Happy enough that a day later I'm still thinking about it and felt it needed a positive review. By comparison, I didn't have that feeling with the last 3 superhero blockbusters I saw in theatres this year.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever: A Mixed Bag of Holiday Cheer

I went into "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" expecting a heartwarming holiday classic. I got that, but with a side of religious messaging that I could have done without.

Don't get me wrong, the film has its charms. The Herdman children, a gang of pint-sized troublemakers, are undeniably entertaining. Their antics, from spitting gum on the stage to demanding the starring roles, provided some genuinely funny moments. The young actors portraying them were incredibly talented, capturing the mischievous spirit of the characters perfectly.

However, I found myself rolling my eyes at some of the overly sentimental and preachy moments. While the film's message about acceptance and finding joy in unexpected places is ultimately positive, it felt a bit heavy-handed at times.

Ultimately, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" is a mixed bag. It's a decent holiday film with some entertaining moments, but it's not without its flaws. If you're looking for a lighthearted and humorous Christmas movie without too much religious emphasis, you might want to look elsewhere.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Recommendation: If you can tolerate a bit of religious messaging, and you enjoy a good dose of holiday chaos, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" might be worth a watch.

BEST CHRISTMAS MOVIE - Awesome Fun Drama from Dallas Jenkins

Dallas Jenkins (the Director of "The Chosen") said it was his dream for many years to make this movie. The Chosen is a great drama about Jesus and the 12 Apostles. Best Christmas Pageant Ever is about the struggling Herdman kids and it is even better. Dallas knows how to make excellent movies and compelling dramas.

Judy Greer is my new favorite as she plays the mom who is directing the church Christmas pageant for the first time. The story is told and narrated by her daughter Beth and centers around her relationship with Imogene Herdman who plays Mary. The mom's tension over Imogene playing Mary is a major theme. What a creative and fresh way to tell the story.

I had seen the play about 10 years ago but there were so many new things added. It was a pure delight to watch even though One of those movies that you do not want to end because you feel the story and characters so deeply. Good thing the theater was dark because my eyes were full of happy tears.

This is one version you don't want to miss.

Not particularly good.

Imagine if someone who watched The Middle when it was on ABC then watched the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies, then sold the shooting rights on Temu. The movie is more Christian than I remember the book being, website includes a five day bible study on the resources page, so if the original book was christian, it at least had the sense to branch out and be good. It's additional audience outside of Jesus types seems to be people who watched Parental Guidance 12 years ago but without the small bits of talent and charm if that movie.

So far it doesn't have the fat camp joke from the book, replacing it with spiel about Virgin Mary's strength.

Enjoyed the nostalgia

Yes it's sappy.

Yes it's predictable.

But good Christmas movies usually are.

We laughed. I cried a good bit.

I wish we had more movies like this.

I wish we had movies that didn't have to have tons of sex and violence. I actually took both kids and my mother in law and we all enjoyed it at different levels. I call that success and it gives me hope.

Most Christian movies are bad. But not this one. It was well acted. The music and editing felt top notch. At no point did I feel like I'd be embarrassed to recommend this film. And I don't think every Christian film has to hit you in the head with the gospel. This one hit that perfect balance.

Moving and touching with some good laughs too

A very enjoyable movie that I plan to add to my annual Christmas movie must-see list.

It's great to have a Christmas movie that is truly about Christmas, and provides moments to both laugh and cry. I had not been familiar with the story, and somewhat surprised to find that it had been around long enough to have already been turned into a TV movies 30+ years ago.

I hope this makes it onto many people's list of favorite Christmas movies. It might be the only one other than Charlie Brown's Christmas that intertwines the true meaning of Christmas with an enjoyable, amusing storyline.

Thank you, Dallas Jenkins.

The kind of Christmas movie we grew up with

Bad kids and good intentions with some lessons learned along the way. Those of us who grew up in the 80s and 90s remember the holiday movie season had some decent movies our parents took us too. Safe and family friendly with some decent fun along the way.

This movie features a mom directing a holiday play and decides use undisciplined kids. Not just any undisciplined kids but the family known by the whole town as bad. As you can imagine, the kids are wild and run amok if not supervised. There were times I thought the story was predictable but then it actually surprised me with some originality. By far this is the feel good movie with a lot of heart.

You'll laugh and might even get a little sad but by the end you'll be all smiles. ''Tis the season for the first good movie of the Christmas season. Destined to even become a holiday classic.

A pure joy

I'm a senior citizen, and I found this movie to be very entertaining, funny, and witty to say the least.

I really enjoyed the holiday backdrop of this movie, made me feel something of a kid again.

I may even go see it a second time.

I did not even mind some of the bratty kids in the back of the theater running around, as I was focused on the humor, and the development of the story with this movie.

One of the year's best. Something the whole family or just an individual would enjoy.

Will enter my list of the holiday movies I will rewatch again and again.

Some of the subject matter may be a bit off setting for some.
