Ciara Renee Sues After Being Cut from Upcoming Broadway Show
Image
Ciara Renee has reportedly filed a lawsuit against the producers of the upcoming Broadway musical Wanted, claiming that she was promised to play the lead role and was later cut from the show.

The 34-year-old actress is best known for playing Hawkgirl in the DC Comics television series Legends of Tomorrow, as well as in episodes of The Flash and Arrow. K-Pop Demon Hunters: Who Is Rumi Based On? Fan Theory Explained
Image
Rumi, the fierce leader of Huntr/x in K-Pop Demon Hunters, has quickly become the center of a big fan debate. Many believe her look and aura were inspired by Blackpink’s Jennie. The theory makes sense as Jennie is a worldwide icon. Her solo album Ruby crossed a million sales and set first-week records for female K-pop soloists (via THR). Earlier this year, her single Like Jennie was Spotify’s most-streamed K-pop song (via Kbs World).

With 88 million Instagram followers, Jennie is often seen as the face of modern K-pop. Director Maggie Kang, however, stepped in after a viral tweet on June 27 claimed Rumi was directly based on Jennie.

14 fantasy TV shows with worldbuilding that rivals Game of Thrones
Image
A lot of fantasy shows try their hand at worldbuilding, but which ones do it right?

Worldbuilding is vital to any fantasy epic. It’s not just creating some world at random; you need to craft the backstory, the history, and the overall feel for it. Game of Thrones succeeded by immersing viewers in Westeros, starting with the opening credits map. It showed the wide range of the world and the lore that the series would build on.

Various series try to emulate that, with some failing while others are good, just not great. Yet some fantasy shows are amazing in how they offer better worldbuilding than some fantasy novels.

Laufey Sets Modern Problems to Classic Melodies
Image
The emergence of Laufey, the Icelandic-Chinese singer-songwriter who has become one Gen Z’s chief flag-waver for throwback pop, is largely attributable to her abundant talent. She has a sculptural alto that easily curves into her heart-on-sleeve lyrics, a knack for marrying 21st-century problems with fishhook melodies that recall standards from previous centuries, and a keen sense for framing those vocal lines in arrangements that highlight the tensions lurking underneath.

She’s also a product of her time, when critical masses in pop can develop away from the expected places.

Doctor Who: BBC Says The Series Will Continue, Even If Disney+ Ends Its Streaming Partnership
Varada Sethu and Ncuti Gatwa in Doctor Who (2023)
When the BBC announced a partnership with Disney+, the intention was to bring Doctor Who to a larger global audience than ever before. In exchange for the show's streaming rights, the House of Mouse gave the long-running sci-fi series a cash injection, leading to a much-needed big-budget overhaul.

Unfortunately, even with better effects and bigger-name guest stars like Frozen's Jonathan Groff, Doctor Who hasn't proven to be a ratings hit either on television ot streaming. Reviews have been mixed, while fans haven't embraced many of returning showrunner Russell T Davies' "woke" ideas for the Time Lord.

Netflix and HBO Max are supposedly in the mix to replace Disney+ should...

KPop Demon Hunters: Sony's $100 Million Budget & Theatrical Release Potential
Image
KPop Demon Hunters is the smash hit of the summer, in part because it went to streaming rather than having a traditional theatrical release, but its success makes it hard not to wonder what could have been. Reaching 186.4 million views, the animated fantasy adventure about a trio of K-pop stars moonlighting as demon hunters is now the second most-watched Netflix movie of all time.

However, it has been increasingly difficult for original movies to win over the box office in recent years, and even a phenomenon as big as this might have struggled if Sony Pictures had released it theatrically. Yet it is clear that Sony has lost something huge as KPop Demon Hunters continues to top both streaming and music charts.

A report published by Puckbreaks down what Sony's potential financial losses are due to the sale of KPop Demon Hunters to Netflix. According to Matthew Belloni, the estimated...

Alan Tudyk confirms he won’t be voicing this popular character in Disney’s live-action ‘Moana’
Image
Here's some fowl news: Disney's beloved Moana franchise is making the leap from animation to live action next year, but Alan Tudyk won't be coming along for the ride. The actor and Mouse House voiceover star provided the clucks and crows for the title character's trusty rooster sidekick Heihei in the Oscar-nominated 2016 original and its box-office-record-breaking 2024 sequel. But the feathery baton will pass to another performer in the live-action Moana, due in theaters on July 10, 2026.

"Heihei will be played by someone else," Tudyk confirms to Gold Derby during a conversation about his Emmy-nominated voiceover role in the Disney+ series Andor. The actor adds that the "someone else" will be a female performer whose casting has yet to be revealed. "Everybody calls Heihei a chicken, even though he's a rooster," Tudyk jokes. "So it's about time they got an actress to put a little more 'chick' in the chicken."

The ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Craze Couldn’t Have Happened in Movie Theaters
Image
This summer’s zeitgeist-defining animated film isn’t coming from theaters. It’s coming from streaming with Netflix/Sony Animation’s “KPop Demon Hunters,” which has defied gravity in a way that no film in the streamer’s history has ever achieved before.

Since its June 20 release, the original English-language animated film about Huntr/x, a K-Pop trio who uses their music and sharp blades to protect Korea from soul-devouring demons, has only snowballed in popularity, passing “Carry-On” and the Oscar-nominated “Don’t Look Up” this week to become the second most-watched film in Netflix history. And in two weeks, theaters will finally be able to partake in the cultural phenomenon when a sing-along version hits the big screen for a limited weekend engagement.

The rise of “KPop Demon Hunters” comes as Hollywood faces a conundrum on how to get the public engaged with new stories and characters — a problem that...

How Republic Nabbed the Soundtrack of the Year With ‘KPop Demon Hunters’
Image
It’s difficult to overstate how big a summer Sony Pictures Animation’s KPop Demon Hunters is having. Netflix now has its biggest animated original film of all time, and with it, Universal Music Group’s Republic Records and its now red-hot new record label partner Visva have what could go down as the biggest soundtrack of 2025.

Both the movie and its songs are on the cusp of a moment not seen since 2022, when Encanto’s “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” took over the world and became Disney’s highest-charting song of all time. And as “Golden,” Demon Hunters’ biggest hit thus far, has reached a new high at Number 2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 this week, it’s a moment that could be about to materialize.

“I still have to keep pinching myself every morning when I wake up and look at the charts, we’re a month in...

Amid KPop Demon Hunters' massive success, all signs point to a sequel
Image
Sony Animation Studios, the same company that brought us hits like the Spider-Verse movies and The Mitchells versus The Machines, took a wild turn with one of their latest releases, KPop Demon Hunters on Netflix.

It's as if they combined Power Rangers, Sailor Moon, and the K-pop music genre. The story follows an all-girl music group, Huntr/X, who come from a long line of warrior musicians wielding their voices to strengthen the veil between humans and demons. The veil begins to deteriorate when an all-boys music group, the Saja Boys, who are secretly a band of demons, starts to steal the girls' fans.

With singing not the only battle they have, while in the dark, the girls don armor and take up weapons to kill demons up close and personal.

It's safe to say that no one should underestimate the reach of Korean music, Eastern animation styles, and fantasy as a whole.

KPop Demon Hunters Could Expand with Sequels, Live-Action, Stage Musicals, World Domination
Ji-young Yoo, Ejae Kim, Arden Cho, and May Hong in Guerreiras do K-Pop (2025)
KPop Demon Hunters is Netflix‘s most-popular animated offering yet, and according to a report from The Wrap, Netflix hasn’t been shy about hoping the musical fantasy becomes their own version of Frozen. The streamer is mulling multiple sequels, a short bridge film (remember “Frozen Fever?” in 2015?), a stage musical, and even a live-action adaptation.

Kdh follows the girl group Huntr/x as they battle demons in the form of a boy group, Saja Boys. In classic House of Mouse tradition, these fantasy elements serve a personal coming-of-age narrative, in this case about a girl struggling with shame. After the film’s drop on June 20th, the music broke streaming containment and charted on Billboard.

While no follow-ups are official yet, co-ceo Ted Sarandos is making franchise expansion one of the company’s top priorities. During a second quarter earnings call in July, Sarandos hailed the “phenomenal success out of the gate…...

New Demon Slayer Movie Breaks Major Box Office Record – But There's a Catch
Image
In 2020, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train made history, as it became the highest-grossing film at the Japanese box office -- a record it still holds today. Now, in 2025, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Infinity Castle is looking to be following in its predecessor's footsteps -- but it has several anime movies to beat first, even as it enters the top 10 biggest box office successes of all time in its home country.

The newest Demon Slayer movie has become one of the most successful Japanese films of all time, and is now working to surpass the rest of the top 10. The list of the ten highest-grossing films in Japan is still topped by Mugen Train, but that doesn't mean that every member of the top 10 is an anime, or even a Japanese production, although several notable entries are, per Japanese news site Oricon.

One Ghibli Film Proves Hayao Miyazaki Should Make a Full-Fledged Romance Story
Image
The Wind Rises proves that Hayao Miyazaki isn’t just the king of flying castles, soot sprites, and heartwarming chaos; he also has the chops to absolutely crush a full-blown romance movie, and he really should do it. Yes, there has always been romance in Ghibli films: like the sweet mutual admiration between Ashitaka and San from Princess Mononoke or even the magical messiness of Sophie and Howl from Howl’s Moving Castle.

But we’re talking real, grown-up, heart-thumping, tear-jerking romance, the sort that crashes into you like a train. And guess what? Hayao Miyazaki nailed it in The Wind Rises, that beautiful, melancholic, painfully underrated gem from 2013. It’s a deeply emotional love story about a man obsessed with his passion, a woman battling illness, and a relationship blooming quietly amidst chaos. Let’s dive in.

Wait, What? Hayao Miyazaki Made a Romance Film?!

So, in The Wind Rises...
