Exclusive: Jenna Elfman, best known for her starring role in the 1997 ABC sitcom Dharma & Greg, is returning to the network with a recurring role on another multi-camera comedy series, the upcoming Shifting Gears, headlined by fellow ABC sitcom star Tim Allen. It is produced by the same studio, 20th Television.
Shifting Gears stars Tim Allen as Matt, the stubborn, widowed owner of Parker Customs, a classic car restoration shop. When Matt’s estranged daughter (Kat Dennings) and her kids move into his house, the real restoration begins.
Elfman will play Eve Drake, a spirited choreographer and owner of the dance studio across from Parker Customs. The role is a good fit for Elfman who is a classically trained ballerina and began her career as a professional dancer, appearing in music videos by Depeche Mode and Anthrax and dancing on the 1991 Academy Awards live broadcast. When news broke that the South Park guys were making a Broadway musical, few would have guessed it would go on to win nine Tony Awards. Trey Parker and Matt Stone were probably surprised as well, since their original intention for Book of Mormon was to make an animated movie as a follow-up to one of their biggest movie successes.
That’s what one of the musical’s original stars, Josh Gad, told Jesse Tyler Ferguson on his Dinner’s On Me podcast, via Indiewire. “Trey and Matt thought that they were going to do it as an animated film. It was going to be their follow-up to Team America. And we ended it,” Gad explained about a live reading of the script. “The response was effusive, albeit people were definitely taken aback and shocked. And they had a huddle and they decided in that moment, ‘Let’s try this as a live theatrical thing.

Before it became a Broadway smash hit, “The Book of Mormon” could have gone animated.
Josh Gad, who originated the role of Elder Arnold Cunningham in the 2011 production, said during Sony Music Entertainment’s “Dinner’s On Me” podcast that co-writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone originally set out to make “Book of Mormon” in the vein of beloved animated satirical film “Team America: World Police.”
However, after the live reading of the script, it became clear that “Book of Mormon” was best suited to Broadway.

Television history is littered with failed sitcoms headlined by comedians that audiences seem to love — in the right show. Turn up in a stinker, however, and the shows are gone in a blink. Matthew Perry was great in Friends, but no one wanted Mr. Sunshine. Audiences adored McLean Stevenson in M*A*S*H but said goodbye to Hello Larry. Jon Cryer scored with Two and Half Men but was booted from his Extended Family this year.
Here are four more comedy stars who flopped multiple times while trying to get sitcoms off the ground…
1 Jason Bateman
Bateman received two well-deserved Emmy nominations for his performance as Michael Bluth in Arrested Development, recognition that came decades after his breakthrough as a Tiger Beat cover boy in Silver Spoons and The Hogan Family. In between, however, he starred in several sitcom flops that lasted a year or less, including It’s Your Move...

Fulfilling a decades-old prophecy — and by prophecy, I mean a throwaway joke that was clearly never meant to be taken seriously — Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs is finally getting a sequel. Whether or not it’s actually going to be called Spaceballs II: The Search for More Money remains to be seen.
Last week, Josh Gad posted images of a heavily-redacted screenplay on Instagram, indicating that he was working on a mystery movie that would be “Based on Characters Created by Mel” somebody, and opens with the scene heading “Ext. Star Field.” Fans quickly deduced that Gad’s script was for a sequel to Spaceballs. It was either that or a Passion of the Christ spin-off set in the distant future.
It’s now been officially confirmed that a Spaceballs follow-up is in development at Amazon MGM. The belated continuation of the 1987 Star Wars spoof will star Gad, who also co-wrote the script.

When spoof-master Mel Brooks delivered his classic "Star Wars" parody "Spaceballs" back in 1987, his Schwartz-wielding character Yogurt (a riff on Frank Oz's beloved Yoda) made a meta joke that put forth the hope of one day seeing a sequel, "Spaceballs II: The Search for More Money." Sadly, in the decades since "Spaceballs" was released, the line has proven to be nothing more than a punchline. Despite the fact that George Lucas returned to "Star Wars" with a prequel trilogy, Mel Brooks never came back to his sci-fi lampoon, even though the lambasted saga of Anakin Skywalker would have been ripe for parody. However, it seems that the chance of a "Spaceballs" sequel coming together has increased.

A Santa-in-waiting and a Santa with a dark side are among the biggest additions in the upcoming season of The Santa Clauses, dropping November 8 on Disney+. The hit show starring Tim Allen is an engaging, comedic extension of the actor’s successful The Santa Clause films, creating a more deeply layered and textured Santa universe. The buzz is building on the season ahead after season two's trailer revealed Santa’s son Cal was enduring Santa training and a “mad” Santa is on the loose. The actor who plays that role will no doubt become a fan favorite.
In addition to Allen, season two brings back the cast that helped make the show a hit — Elizabeth Mitchell (Mrs. Santa), Elizabeth Allen-Dick (Sandra Clause), Devin Bright (Noel), Austin Kane (Cal), and Matilda Lawler (Betty). Look for Modern Family favorite Eric Stonestreet to figure prominently this season. Jack Burditt is the series’ executive producer and showrunner.

Sitcoms have historically been hits with television viewers for generations. But not all sitcoms have been beloved by TV audiences, and viewers were happy to hear they were canceled, whether in the middle of the season or after an entire season aired.
Every network has faced negative responses to sitcoms regardless of their intended audiences. Shows like Fred: The Show was targeted at kids but didn't make waves, while 1600 Penn was supposed to appeal to the whole family but didn't catch the audience's attention. For every wildly popular sitcom, there has been at least one that fans were glad to see leave their screens.

Most characters created for commercials aren't fleshed out enough to make a show around. This was the case with Cavemen. The show was supposed to focus on the Geico cavemen, who were created to demonstrate how easy it was to get insurance.

From the political aspects to the sharp writing, fans are still looking for shows like The West Wing. Created by Aaron Sorkin, premiered on NBC and ran for seven seasons from September 1999 to May 2006. The show is a political drama, one of the first of its kind. At the time of the series premiere, there hadn't been a popular television show whose focal point and main character was the President of the United States and the location for every episode was The White House.
The series is of course, completely fictional and not based on any president in particular, but it does tackle a lot of the issues surrounding politics and the current events at the time the series was being written. This show paved the way and created a fan base for political drama. For fans of this series, there are a few other shows like The West Wing...

The superhero movie genre is getting Kevin Hart comedy Night Wolf, which comes from the writers of Detective Pikachu.
Night Wolf is joining the seemingly-ceaseless deluge of superhero cinema, with Kevin Hart set to star-in and produce the comedic cinematic genre offering.
STXfilms announced its acquisition of the script to Night Wolf, which is being described as a “high concept comic superhero” offering. The early details of the plot describe a scenario that’s initially akin to Meet the Parents, in which a man (Hart) meets his prospective father-in-law, eventually discovering the secret that he’s the film’s eponymous superhero, the Night Wolf.
The Night Wolf project was pitched by writer Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, a duo who did some work on the screenplay for this past May’s live-action/animated hybrid film, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, as well as television comedy work on episodes of...

Contrary to popular belief that insists upon their demise, first-rate romantic comedies are still alive and well. Sadly, Jason Winer’s perplexing farce “Ode to Joy” — on the misadventures of a tedious male lead with a self-sabotaging biology that opposes happiness — makes it harder than ever to dispute the mourners of the supposedly vanished genre. Humorless to a paralyzing extent, this joyless effort (developed under the title “The Pursuit of Unhappiness”) illustrates how a bad-on-paper idea can turn into something cringe-inducing onscreen. It also reminds that pulling off a smart, intoxicating happily-ever-after tale with sexual chemistry, refined contemporary jokes and lovably quirky sidekicks (à la “The Big Sick” or “Crazy Rich Asians”) is much tougher than we often imagine.
Inspired by a true story featured on the “This American Life” podcast, the labored romp follows the Brooklyn librarian Charlie, played by a deliberately monotonous Martin Freeman (“The Hobbit”) sans an emotional range.

Someone, show Wynonna Earp the money! Production on Season 4 of the Syfy series has been delayed due to financial challenges on producer Idw Entertainment’s part, per The Hollywood Reporter.
A new start date remains unclear as Idw seeks funding for not just the next season, but a Season 5 as well, which Deadline says was quietly ordered by Syfy.
Syfy — which licenses the drama from Idw Entertainment — says it is “completely committed to the series. This has not changed.”

Sacha Baron Cohen’s controversial Who is America? is performing a valuable service in that it’s exposing how “shameless” are those members of the Gop who will “literally do anything,” the hosts and creators of Pod Save America told TV critics at TCA.
The four Dems on the HBO TCA panel said their party need not clutch its pearls over Cohen, insisting his very divisive Showtime series is not going to hurt Claire McCaskill’s chances in Missouri.
The most depressing thing about what Cohen does “is that he’s not that manipulative… He does not have to push them too hard,” Jon Lovett said.
(Late Tuesday, it was announced that Georgia state Rep. Jason Spencer, who mooned the camera and yelled racist slurs on Cohen’s program, will resign from the legislature.)
Lovett got asked the inevitable question about his short-lived NBC sitcom 1600 Penn about a zany...

In a TV world where some services offer up brand new TV shows every week, it’s all the more impressive when a network can maintain quality with only a handful of new series each calendar year. One such channel? FX, which for the better part of the last 20 years, has been a place that’s helped push the boundaries of what’s allowed and what’s successful on TV.
Particularly since 2002 (the year when two of the shows in this collection premiered), FX has become a force for compelling dramas, surprising comedies, and a few shows that proudly defy falling into either category. Not all their efforts have been critical or audience successes (for every “The Shield,” there’s bound to be an “Anger Management”), but there’s a certain consistency to the FX banner that’s come without having a particular house style.
So which of these shows are most worthy of praise?...

ABC, with good showings by dramas “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal,” tied with Fox for the demo lead on Thursday but “American Idol” continues to sag at the midway point of its 12th season. CBS, which usually wins the night, lagged this week with its annual coverage of college basketball’s March Madness.
According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, ABC kicked off its night with the season premiere of “Wife Swap”, which certainly performed better than previous slot occupant “Zero Hour” even if it was a bit below the recent three-week average for celebrity version of the show on Tuesday. “Wife Swap” outperformed all episodes from its most recent season for the show’s strongest numbers for a non-celebrity episode since April 2009.
“Grey’s Anatomy” bounced back from its series low of last week to edge out “American Idol” as Thursday’s No. 1 show in 18-49. And at 10, the first new...

Exclusive: There is a casting change on the NBC White House family comedy pilot 1600 Penn following the project’s table read yesterday. The role of the President’s eldest daughter Becca is being recast with Martha MacIsaac (Greek). Brittany Snow was originally tapped for the role. The producers opted to make a creative change with a younger and darker-looking Becca after the table read as the original character and Snow appeared not to mesh well with the rest of the family, including in physical resemblance with the other siblings. Coincidentally, MacIsaac also played a character named Becca in Superbad. Co-created by Josh Gad, Jason Winer and Jon Lovett and directed by Winer, 1600 Penn is a dysfunctional family comedy set at the White House, where the president’s (Bill Pullman) out-of-control oldest son (Gad) returns home and becomes not only the family’s biggest liability but also the glue holding everyone together.
