"Alice in Terrorland" will be remembered, but as one of the worst horror films in history.

"Alice in Terrorland" is another adaptation of a children's novel to the horror genre, and the result is terrible. Speaking of the art direction and cinematography, the result is pleasant, but the director's work is bad, it seems non-existent, the actors try to give good performances but the terrible script fails to favor them. The costume design is simple, the soundtrack goes completely unnoticed and the horror and suspense elements are non-existent. The film totally fails in quality, in addition to being a sleeping pill throughout its duration. "Alice in Terrorland" will be remembered, but as one of the worst horror films in history.

do not even waste your time

I went to watch this movie with my dad and my sister (we're horror movie lovers) the movie was poorly structured, production was nice but the flow of the movie was poor and boring and made no sense. The ending was absolutely terrible and it really was a waste of time and money. There were a total of maybe 2 good jump scares and the scenery was a bit thrilling but the events were boring and lead to absolutely nothing. My arab dad absolutely hated the movie and regrets the $30 he spent today. I personally don't think the movie was that horrible (i enjoyed the production and the scenery and the way it made me feel but i did not enjoy the events or the flow of the movie especially not the ending). Watch literally any other movie, don't waste your time.

worst movie in cinematic history

This is the movie that should enforce the development of a " DO NOT WATCH " list on the Internet.

I watched it with a group of 7 friends and i kid you not half of them left during the first 10 minutes of the movie. If i were to direct this movie i wouldn't offer it to a dog let alone to actual cinemas. It was a disgrace to my eyes, ears, wallet, time, and body watching that movie. The plot line is so bland and meaningless, the movie has no motivation behind it, it is so low budget i can probably do a better remake with an iphone and my living room. The setting is completely centered around a single place which revolves around a single character that converses with a new person every 5 minutes about things that do not build up on the events that happened before. The director or whoever came up with the idea of this pointless movie should pursue another job. I am surprised it got a rating on IMDb when there is nothing good about the movie. Remove it from cinemas before people start blinding their own selves. Worst movie in cinematic history, if the inventor of cameras had watched this he probably wouldn't have invented cameras.

Overall rating: -7.2/10.

bunch of audience left halfway through

Terrible, a mere waste of time and money. Wish i read the reviews before entering the theater. I was looking for a thriller/horror to enter with my wife, sadly there was no other movie and i was too lazy to read reviews before entering as there was nothing else to compare it to. 77 minutes later with nothing at all to discuss.

The acting was terrible, the effects were more like filters, the plot was too dull and finally the dialogue was full of itself for no reason.

Q: do you want to have a good time and may be some good memories about a movie?

A: see something else, literally anything other than this have a extremely significant chance in bringing you joy and delight.

Honestly Boring

It was soulless garbage, and a shallow attempt to make the classic Alice in Wonderland into a horror, which other media will tell you this actually can be done well. This wasn't one of those examples.

The dialogue is awkward, and weird. The idea that Alice is being read the original, and in her fever dream is being taken to wonderland could have worked actually. But damn, girl your fever dreams are boring. Even the idea that her parents have passed and that has altered her mental state, has existed before. This just does that badly.

The costume elements are boring. The pacing is weird and doesn't work. And it has moments where it tries to be edgy but, it falls flat because it's trying too hard.

Slow Motion Dark Mode

This is apparently some film school dropout's final project. They TRY to be "artsy" throughout the whole thing. It starts out with three rapid fire scenes with no context. Then we are "treated" to a monochromatic kaleidoscope of fractal images with some trippy music in the background. I swear, if I'd had some LSD, I'd have at least been in the right mood.

All these dropouts seem to think that slow motion builds tension. It is an overused trope that every one of these art projects over use. I'm serious... I have seen molasses flowing up hill in January at a faster pace than this... movie. There is one scene where Alice is literally slow motion crawling across the floor for a GOOD five minutes. If they had run all of the slow motion scenes at normal speed, the movie would have been at least half an hour shorter. Not a lie.

Then, as is the case with every single modern "movie," the entire thing is filmed with two candles and a 4 watt night light bulb. I swear... what is it with this freaking trend?! You might as well make it a radio play for all you can actually see.

I'll bet you want to know about the plot, though, don't you? Yeah... you and me both. The entire thing is a really bad retelling of "Alice in Wonderland" with a twist you can see coming a mile away.

There is an adult, x-rated version of "Alice in Wonderland" - a musical at that! - from 1976 that has a better story line, better acting (and better lighting) than this trainwreck of a "movie."

A bizarre take on the classic Lewis Carroll tale...

Another horror movie that I hadn't heard about prior to stumbling upon it by random chance. And with it being a horror movie that I had never seen nor heard of, of course I had to sit down and watch it. Horror is my go-to genre for entertainment, so of course there was no doubt about me sitting down to watchng what writer and director Richard John Taylor had to deliver here.

However, from the glorious 3.2 rating here on IMDb, which was the rating when I sat down to watch the movie, I have to say that I wasn't exactly harboring much of any expectations or hopes to the movie. But still, I opted to watch it on the off chance that the movie might actually be entertaining to me.

The storyline in "Alice in Terrorland" was somewhat of a swing and a miss in terms of properly entertaining me. Sure, there were aspects to it that proved good, but the overall impression of the narrative was not something that I found to be overly enjoyable or entertaining. So it was a bit of a struggle to sit through the movie. And truth be told, the pacing of the narrative was rather monotonous and bland, which resulted in a somewhat boring viewing experience.

Sure, I will give writer Richard John Taylor points for managing to take Lewis Carroll's classic tale and spin a modern twist on it. Just a shame that it failed to properly entertain me.

I was not familiar with anyone on the cast list, and that is actually something that I do enjoy when I sit down and watch a movie. The acting performances in the movie were good, though I have to say that I couldn't point anyone out for putting on a memorable performance.

Visually then I will say that the movie was fair. The props, wardrobes, etc. Looked good and had a certain atmospheric feel to it that definitely added something to the overall impression of the movie.

Now, I am sure that there is an audience out there for a bizarre movie such as what "Alice in Terrorland" turned out to be. So give it a chance, if you find odd movies to be your thing.

My rating of "Alice in Terrorland" lands on a three out of ten stars.

Very different and definitely worth a watch

Love it! It's very dark in places as you would expect from a horror movie. The original book was quite dark so keeps with spirit of Alice in Wonderland. There are some nightmarish visions which are very well done (I wont say any more as don't want any spoilers). You will have to watch it to see!

It flows well and there are some great performances and some good practical effects. Its one of those movies that doesn't follow but leads with some great set environments.

Jon-Paul Gates has the Mad Hatter off to a tee. Incredible performance; its different but thats what makes it great! Definitely worth a watch for sure!

Not great horror

Alice in terrorland is one of your run of the mil direct to dvd horror horror films. It's low budget and doesn't have much pay off. Having that I'm mind though there are a few things this movie does effectively. The opening credits with the colydascope hedge looked trippy and almost brought you into the world. Izzy Willis plays Alice. Some of the better acting here this also includes Jon Paul gates as the mad jatrwr, his hat had a coll design. The location itself was pretty eerie and despite the very bad acting of the other cast members the chaeacters still gave thrm something. Also this d was too short to get going and when it ended I felt there could have been more. Overall not great. But it's not really a terrible film eothet.

A boring, well shot, slog

Me and my friend watched Alice in Terrorland primarily for the reason that Jon Paul Gates, who is an icon, is in it. That was our first mistake, the film is extremely dull and forgettable. With few scares and even fewer Jon Paul Gates (so sad!) What it does have going for it is its pretty good cinematography and interesting colour scheme.

The plot is confusing and unexciting, but at least they tried more than the average low budget horror flick of "this is a spooky house, here are some ghosts, be scared!" I liked the costumes in part too. But these few positives can't excuse such a dull, forgettable and lackluster film.

3/10: Such a dull film can't even justify its short run time.

Worst Movie Ever?

It may very well be. It looks like it was shot on an iPhone 4, it is devoid of literally anything that might keep you engaged and is so boring it is painful to watch. Kudos to whoever financed this movie as you clearly have more money than sense. Some movies are so bad they are fun but this isn't one of them.

Prisoners at Guantanamo Bay watch this movie daily as punishment for their crimes. Cruel and unusual indeed but I'm sure they deserve it. I watched all of this and I'm dumber for the experience. It was punishment to prepare me for another trump presidency. If you can stomach this movie you can stomach 4 more years of trump. Beware people, beware.

Performance 'art' does not a movie make

Odd. Weird. Strange. Disjointed. Plot-light.

Incredible. Each of these terms describe this movie, except one. Guess which one. I bet you can't...

Honestly, though, I didn't think it was THAT bad. Yes, it's terribly disjointed, and yes it's hard to follow the "plot", and really it's not even a proper horror movie - it's much more of a short collection of Lewis Carroll-inspired performance art pieces which, taken individually, are actually kinda interesting for what they're doing...but it's not a horror movie, and it's not even really a movie as such. I reckon it's something someone did to try to join the recent-ish glut of 'horror' movies based on childhood tales.

Acting saved the money

Low budget? Yes. What's wrong with that? Not so scary? Maybe. It tries to be a more phychological aproach to the story. Little or none similarities to other versions of the original "Alice"? Why should it be the same? It is a new, different and darker reading of a well known fairy tale. Ok: It has a lot of flaws and a few virtues. And among these, I would point on some acting achievements. In particular Jp Gates portrayal of the Mad Hatter. If we want to get immersed in the dark atmosphere of the original Lewis Carroll's "Alice" (maybe darker, like is the case of this movie), the real Mad Hatter wouldn't be like the cartoonesque Johnnie Depp's portrait of that character, but instead, it would be more like the psychopathic bipolar madman depiction that JP Gates had magnificently achieved with his performance. Definitely the best of what we may find in this movie.

Two thumbs up to him!

Surprisingly good.....

I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed this British horror gem. The main draws for me were the title and casting of Rula Lenska and that's all the info I went in with.

I'm kinda shocked at the amount of 1 star reviews because the film is nowhere close to 1 star material in my humble opinion. Admittedly I'm a fan of a slow burn so long as the plot/concept grabs my attention and for the most part this film had my attention. It was also beautifully shot with some impressive cinematography on display and the music also added to the film.

The weakest part of this film for me was the lead actress with her storybook accent and overall flat performance. Rula was an utter delight in every scene she was in. I could tell the actress was relishing in playing such a "character".

Overall this film was pretty good, nothing stellar don't get me wrong but I'd definitely watch it again.

Aside from Lenska, it's a dreary bore.

While it was great seeing Rula Lenska* in a choice role pulling out all the stops, the production is a dreary misfire, full of imagery that bores rather than intrigues. A half hour's with of story is dragged out to a length that felt far longer than the running time. If you care to watch, fast forward to all of Lenska's scenes. The rest is, sadly, not to be recommended.

*I was a member of the Rula Lenska Fan Club here in the United States, a kind of parody of fan clubs since Lenska was only known for her Alberto VO5 TV ads in which she introduced herself, "I'm Rula Lenska," to a befuddled but bemused American public that had never heard of her before-her lack of notoriety became, itself, a sensation and a punch line for late night comedians like Carson. What the RLFC did successfully, with tongue in cheek, was humanize the actress with bits of news and background. Lenska already had a career overseas, so we heard about that too. I drifted away as I grew older and the novelty wore off. Lenska didn't catch on in a big way in the States, and years went by. First with video and flash forward to now with streaming, vintage overseas entertainment has thankfully become ever more readily available.

Not that bad...but still bad

As I'm writing this, the rating for "Alice in Terrorland" is a dismal 2.7. Had I known that prior to watching it because the poster looked interesting I wouldn't have bothered. And now that I've seen it...I probably shouldn't have bothered.

But I must say, I don't agree that it's the worst horror film ever made. I also don't agree that it's the best. But it is really boring and not particularly scary and everything is in the shadows-even outside. But I feel like it deserves a couple of points for attempting to be artistic and at least another point for Rula Lenska. Honestly, I didn't know she was even still around and she did a decent job.

A different re-telling of Alice in Wonderland.

This movie has very bad ratings, so why do I give it a 10? Because I see it not as a fairy tale, but a story of greed so terrible that it's hard to believe how it brings out the worse in a person. First; I have to say two things about me. One, I am a retired psychologist, so I have seen evil very close. People like one of the characters. Second, I am 77 and I still have my copies of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass for almost as long as I have been alive. Both books show the age, but they have been with me throughout all my moves, which included intenational. That's how much they meant to me. This is movie shows the evil side of one of the character, the Red Queen if anyone is wondering. Obviously not a version to take a child to see.

More of a thriller. Jon Paul Gates stands out as Mad Hatter.

Alice in Terrorland presents an interesting twist on Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. The film, as should be expected by the title, is darker than Carroll's original tale. I thought the scenery/locations, etc. Were well done. I liked the Grandmother/Granddaughter storyline, which is not standard fare for films based on Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. I thought Lizzy Willis' performance as Alice was very good. And, as usual, Jon Paul Gates did not disappoint as the Mad Hatter. IMO his portrayal of deranged, evil, maniacal, and creepy characters is among the best. Some might be disappointed in the lack of true terror/blood and guts. But I much prefer the psychological thriller genre so it was right up my alley in that respect.

A sinisterly beautiful re-imagining of Lewis Carroll's world!

With beautifully eery and striking cinematography, coupled with superb casting of all the iconic characters for Carroll's writing, Alice in Terrorland is a pleasure to watch and a refreshing take on indie horror films that adapt well know properties within the public domain.

From the moment you step into Wonderland with Alice, you are filled with anticipation and intrigue as how to the narrative will unfold. Admittedly the narrative is not unfamiliar to other dark retellings of "Alice in Wonderland" in modern media, but the modernised contextualisation provides the ability for the audience to more easily understand how the story unfolds within a new setting and adds to the character's personal development and as the film progresses.

For me, the stand out moments in terms of acting and characterisation are optimised in the portrayals of the Cheshire Cat, the twins (tweedle-dum & tweedle dee) and especially Jon-Paul Gates portrayal as The Mad Hatter. With all actors giving us a chilling and encapsulating performance, revelling in the twisted version of Carroll's world portrayed within the film's context.

Jon-Paul Gates' ability to switch emotions and metal states on a dime is truly impressive and pleasing to watch as a fellow actor, let alone how unpredictable he is, which is very suitable to the role and certainly leaves a lasting impression on you as the viewer. Full marks for Mr. Gates!

On the whole, I very much enjoyed watching this spectacle unfold. I was left a little disappointed at the climax of the film and the ending scene to which I was not sure of the relevance of within the film's plot. But the world building, the character portrayal, the outstanding cinematography capturing the sister beauty of Wonderland left me very satisfied with purchasing this film and I look forward to seeing what comes next from this director and studio.

A slow burn thriller

I keep seeing all of these negative reviews, but I'd like to add a (slightly) positive one. This movie is a slow burn thriller, no pun intended. It's not quite the gut clenching terror of Watcher in the Woods, but it's not the mind numbing tedium of The Lobster. It falls somewhere in between. I'd recommend it for fans of the original novel, but keep in mind, it's not a DIRECT translation, nor is it a gore filled slasher fest.

Watch it on the streaming service of your choice, and try to not allow yourself to be distracted. Enjoy it for the slowly building suspense and occasional jump scare moments.
