Viktor, a metropolitan Investigative Committee investigator, arrives in the small village of Rybnoe on the border with Finland. His girlfriend Eva, who was visiting her grandmother, disappeared there.

After being released from prison, Viktor begins investigating the murder of cash collectors and the disappearance of Eva. He is trying to interview the local population, but people are not making contact.

At night, Kazantsev pursues the man who shot at him, but he manages to escape. In the morning, he interrogates a local loafer Stas Shatalin, who considers his detention illegal.

Kazantsev arrives at Blagykh's house to share his suspicions. It turns out that Stas Shatalin's rifle is not a murder weapon.

Kazantsev informs Viktor about Eva's death. However, Viktor does not believe that she drowned. Viktor asks Zatsepin for help in the hope of finding out what happened to Eva.

Viktor comes to the workshop of businessman and activist Klever, saying that he considers him guilty of setting fire to the warehouse of Blagikh. Klever denies everything.

Kuzmich is sure that the robber will secretly leave the country with the money. Kazantsev believes that the criminal is still here. An armed attack is being carried out on Yakov. Sergeant Fyodor is tracking down the attacker.

Nastya is outraged that her ward is being adopted by a couple from Finland. Kryukov takes Nastya hostage and goes to an orphanage. With a hostage and a kidnapped daughter, he is trying to cross the border.

Yakov is gradually recovering, and Darya Kazantseva offers him to become her deputy. Viktor receives a photo of Eva from an unknown number, who enters a house.

Stas Shatalin, who came to the police station, declares that he did not shoot Viktor, but Kazantsev detains him. Turmalay, along with his accomplices, attacks Kazantsev, Blagikh, Katya and Zatsepin, who are transporting money.

Kazantsev sees that Stas Shatalin is lying, but cannot understand the reason for this behavior. After the results of the ballistic examination, Viktor realizes that Stas Shatalin could not have fired the shot.

Pan joins the race for the money. Having organized an escape from the detention center, he rushes to the farm.

Kazantsev is summoned to the investigator of the regional department of the Investigative Committee, Rubtsov, who considers the major's report to be fiction. The major is suspended from the case. Kazantsev and Viktor decide that one of their own was leaking information to the side.

An investigative team arrives at the scene of Blagikh's murder, but Kazantsev is not allowed there. The criminologist reports that Blagikh was killed with the same knife as Gavrila Shatalin a year ago.

There is a showdown in the New Horizons office in Moscow over a series of murders that draw attention to their activities. Viktor is trying to find out from Mikhail Repin where he was during Eva's visit to the police.

Mikhail Repin informs Kazantsev that he knows who poisoned Eva. Kuzmich overhears their conversation and goes on the run.
