During production between September and October of 1996, Big Idea's air conditioning at their then headquarters was being replaced and a heat wave had hit. Everyone pushed themselves to get the video done on time for the holiday season. After production, Phil Vischer woke up one night with terrible chest pains. At the hospital, the doctors tell him that a bacteria is eating at his heart. He had to stay in bed for a month but eventually made a full recovery.
At one point, Buzz Saw Louie says that everyone with hands should tie a rope together. At the time this video was made, the creators hadn't answered the question of how the veggies manipulate the world around them. For example, when Larry gives his guests cookies during his song, 'Oh, Santa,' the robber and the Viking take the cookie partly off-screen. The Peach, however, lifts the cookie from the plate with his mouth.
Having recently undergone an audit, Mike Nawrocki included the Peach as an IRS agent in 'Oh, Santa' just so he could have Larry slam the door in his face.
The episode was soon released on television in "The VeggieTales Christmas Spectacular" which included songs and new animation. The spectacular can be found on the episode DVD's bonus features.
It is the first Christmas-themed episode of this religious educational animated series.
