Exclusive: The K-drama craze continues around the world, with Rakuten Viki snapping up a soon-to-launch drama starring Song Joong-ki (Reborn Rich) and Chun Woo-hee (The Wailing) for multiple territories.
The Asian entertainment-focused streaming has acquired rights to My Youth in the U.S., Latin America and Europe. It will launch on streaming service Viki in September.
Directed by Lee Sang-yeop (Yumi’s Cells) and written by Park Si-hyeon, the series follows Sun Woo-hae (Song) and his first love, Sung Je-yeon (Chun), who reconnect after a decade apart. Sun has found comfort and satisfaction in his work as a novelist and florist after a difficult childhood in the entertainment industry, while Sung is driven to reach the highest echelons of career success as a team leader at Feel Entertainment, having seen her wealthy family lose everything. Hot on the heels of his Un Certain Regard prize win at last year’s Cannes for “Black Dog,” acclaimed Chinese director Guan Hu is set to unveil his latest project at this year’s Cannes Film Market.
The Seventh Art Pictures will handle international sales for “Dong Ji Island,” an $80 million war epic based on true events from World War II. Co-directed by Guan and his longtime assistant director Fei Zhenxiang, the film follows the harrowing rescue mission of local islanders who brave treacherous seas and Japanese forces to save British prisoners of war trapped on a sinking Japanese warship mistakenly attacked near China’s easternmost waters.
The film is based on the sinking of Japanese ship “Lisbon Maru,” which was also the subject of documentary “The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru,” which was China’s entry to the Oscars’ international category.

Exclusive: Korean animated film Yumi’s Cells: The Movie will be released on streaming platform Rakuten Viki on July 19, after a theatrical run at the domestic box office in April.
The Asian-content focused Rakuten Viki has also unveiled a collab with Chinese video site Bilibili to bring animated series Mom, I’m Sorry and Rakshasa Street Seasons 1-3 to the platform.
Yumi’s Cells: The Movie was adapted from the eponymous webtoon, which originally received an enormous 3.5 billion views. The webtoon also spawned two live action drama series titled Yumi’s Cells in 2021 and 2022, which are available on Rakuten Viki. Broadcast rights to the show were sold to more than 160 territories.
According to the Korean Film Council’s data, Yumi’s Cells: The Movie grossed around $445,000 from 76,500 admissions at the Korean box office in April.
