The usual level of quality you expect from a streaming movie

I am starved for comedy movies. They seem to be nearing extinction. So I sometimes make exceptions to my "I only watch theatrically released movies" rule for a chance at some laughs.

From one perspective, You're Cordially Invited did make me laugh out loud 12-15 times. On the other hand, it feels like another barely mediocre movie that we constantly see from streaming originals.

Will Ferrell has nearly all of the funny parts. Aside from him, I found the majority of the cast unfunny. The failed comedic attempts made me cringe on several occasions. And there are so many stupid moments and things that make no sense in order to make the joke work.

Maybe I'm the wrong demographic. But aside from a few laughs, I did not enjoy this movie.

Best Part was the End

I've liked almost every Reese Witherspoon movie I've watched. Will Ferrell rarely disappoints. Putting them together in a comedy seems like a no brainer My issue with this movie is that I knew it would be terrible. Not because of the trailer. Just because this is the norm with straight to streaming movies. One out of ten movies like this are good. They now you don't invest much but 2 hours where you spend half of it scrolling on your phone as you hope to laugh and be surprised. This move doesn't disappoint if you go in knowing it will be bad. Don't expect to laugh out loud

The singing in the post credits scene was the highlight for me.

Terrible

Super cringey. Rating this a 2 instead of a 1 because the scenery is gorgeous and the clothes interesting. If they didn't use terrible language the whole time it might have at least been a 4. Awful characters, bad jokes. There are comments here criticizing Will and Reese as old but frankly it's just the awful script. For starters, the basic premise that a wedding would be booked without a deposit and no interaction with the venue makes no sense. None of the people getting married, no one in the wedding parties, and no family members are likeable. It's a shame because this should have been a cute wedding movie.

Try To Enjoy It For What It Is

Here is a film that will make you laugh alot if you just sit back and enjoy it for what it is. Don't come in expecting the best movie ever made. Its a light hearted comedy. Try and see the humor in the situations each character faces and you will thoroughly enjoy it.

Will Ferrell doesnt have to always shock and awe us to be relevant. His level of funny has matured just as he has. Yes he may not be as funny as he was in "Old School" but he doesn't need to be that funny in every role.

The movie is entertaining, but of course like always there will be people who complain and say, well this isn't as good as this movie or that movie. Don't be willing to write off everything as a disappointment before you have even truly given it a legitimate chance. Try not to have huge such huge expectations, or try to compare this movie to all the others you have seen before it, and if you do that, I am certain you will enjoy this funny movie as my friend and I did. It literally had us laughing in most of the scenes. 7/10.

What happened?

With two well known actors I thought this film was going to be funny and entertaining. But like my headline states "what happened?".

I thought in the movie as soon as it started with will and his daughter doing the silly greeting to each other was so cringe. Then through the film it just become boring. I tried my best to watch it but it kept loosing me. I also think Will Ferral as now become boring to watch and his films don't seem funny anymore.

Just boring and cringe all the way through and couldn't wait for the ending just to knock it off. Tried my best to keep watching and thought it get better, unfortunately it didnt.

Disappointing and weird

I was eager to watch this one. I love comedies and these two are among the best at it. Spirited was amazing, so i has renewed faith in a streaming platform to make it right... And then i watched.

In the movie's defense, there are a few laughing out loud moment (mostly courtesy of Ferrell), but those moments feel far apart and mainly due to the comedy ability of the stars.

But this movies feels wrong sometimes. It just plays mean, they do crazy things that feel forced and awkward, some of the humour its just dry and lazy and it portraits southerners like they still live in the 1800s. If its a feel good movie, they do a very good job of making you feel sorry for the couples. And its hard to like someone with so many bad actions, despite being super likeable.

Oh, the score its awful - and why play over and over? - and the aligator scene its stupid.

A missed opportunity, not a movie i will rewatch.

This is so bad

There is nothing redeeming about this movie. The plot is idiotic. The chemistry is not there. I love these actors, but I cannot stand this film. It's only January but this I'm sure will be my least favorite movie of the entire year..

Why was this made? Were they blackmailed or under contract and required to do this movie?

Even the comedian Fortune Femstier can't save it.

I mean, come on... Will Ferrell wrestles a crocodile? Even for romcoms we've seen the cliché of a double booked wedding before. It really is not worth any of your time. Please avoid at all costs. The appealing cast cannot salvage this awful awful film.

Liked it

I actually liked it. It was light and funny in an obvious way like it wasn't too much and not lame, the mix was weird but that what actually made it light. Reese witherspoon and her moments with her mom did touched my heart and made me realize how motherhood can be little challenging on both ends and I did relate to that. The accuracy of how gen Z would get married and deal with relationships was portrayed correctly and how they are using synonyms "gaslighting" even though they didn't realize what does it mean.

The dynamics of family, motherhood and fatherhood and all the unexpected feelings that overwhelms us as a family was shown in a cool non obvious way.

Its a mix of everything and fits exactly where it should be.

Dumb not funny

This movie was everything wrong. The writers lacked. Sat thru this movie hoping it would get better, and it never did. All very predictable.

This was a typical movie for Will Farrell, dumb. I have yet to see a movie of Will's that is good. All are the same.

Reese Witherspoon should be more selective of her scripts. Her movies keep getting worse.

One of the Jonas brothers made an appearance, altho not sure why. Ridiculous.

Dock scene was very predictable, as were numerous ither scenes.

Blathering because the amount of characters is insane, far too many. I hope you enjoy this movie more rhan I did.

Fun movie, wait for the end credits

I really liked this movie. At first from the trailer I thought Reese was going to be the mother of the bride on her side which I thought they did that to better match her with the older Wills character but thanks goodness that was not to be and it made sense that Wills character was just a somewhat older Dad and she was the older sister and it worked. These two actually worked well together and the chemistry was there, albeit cheeky, but it worked and I enjoyed watching the two of them in every scene they shared together!

The movie made me smile a few times and laugh out loud even more . It's just a fun movie , nothing too serious, even with the weddings , they were not done the run of the mill way like in all other movies, these weddings were different and again it worked and was a bit of a breath of fresh air to see the less than perfect weddings and how they turned out. Forget all of the silly reviews here rating this because anything under a 6 is just madness , it was light hearted comedy, not forced , and the banter between Reese and Wills characters was just amazing from start to finish of the entire movie .

I could easily watch this again and soon!

Please do yourself a favour and wait until the end credits for the icing on the cake, so special!

Typical Will Ferrell...

... Which is pretty dang good! This was a slapstick movie, which usually isn't my genre but I love me some Will and Reese!

Silly, ridiculous, over the top, but it worked for me.

The highlight was the closing credits. That actually took it from a six to a seven.

ABOUT MY REVIEWS:

I do not include a synopsis of the film/show -- you can get that anywhere and that does not constitute a meaningful review -- but rather my thoughts and feelings on the film that hopefully will be informative to you in deciding whether to invest 90-180 minutes of your life on it.

My scale: 1-5 decreasing degrees of "terrible", with 5 being "mediocre" 6- OK. Generally held my interest OR had reasonable cast and/or cinematography, might watch it again 7 - Good. My default rating for a movie I liked enough to watch again, but didn't rise to the upper echelons 8- Very good. Would watch again and recommend to others 9- Outstanding. Would watch over and over; top 10% of my ratings 10 - A classic. (Less than 2% receive this rating). For Lifetime Movies for Chicks (LMFC), drop the above scale by 3 notches. A 6 is excellent and 7 almost unattainable.

Wasn't expecting much and that's what I got

I had zero preconceived notions before watching this movie but was hoping for at least a typical romcom. Sadly, it lacked the typical and believable cutesy, cheesy and sentimental elements you come to expect of this genre, but I can say it was very heavy on cringe. The dysfunction between characters/families was a little much, and the gratuitous language was a turnoff. The storyline might have worked, but it lost me with the unbelievable scenes which were supposed to be comedic. However, I did enjoy the Peyton Manning cameo, even if it was wasted in this film. I hope others enjoy this movie, I can definitely say it wasn't for me.

You're Cordially Invited - A Forgettable Misfire

Despite boasting the star power of Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell, You're Cordially Invited is a bland, uninspired attempt at a romcom that fails to deliver on both romance and comedy. The film feels like it wants to recapture the charm of old-school romcoms, but instead, it stumbles into the realm of generic teen comedy-minus the laughs.

The script is the biggest culprit here, offering little in the way of memorable dialogue or engaging characters. Most of the supporting cast is entirely forgettable, with the sole exception of Reese Witherspoon's character's mother, who steals every scene she's in with the only genuinely funny lines. It's a shame, because Witherspoon and Ferrell have proven comedic chops, but they're given so little to work with that their presence barely makes an impact.

Ultimately, Your Cordially Invited is neither outright terrible nor particularly entertaining-it's just forgettable. A misfire from start to finish, and one I won't be revisiting.

Missed opportunities

It was enjoyable enough. I laughed a few times. Some of the humor was too obvious to really be funny. (If even I can predict the punchline, then some comedy writers aren't doing their jobs properly.) My husband even pointed out some scenes that could have been made funnier (like Reese's family HELPING Will evade bridesmaids at the end).

I felt ZERO romantic chemistry between the leads, so I wouldn't call this a ROM-COM, just a COM. (See, that's the best joke I can come up with, and I feel some jokes were at that level, so again, I'd expect the writers to do better than that.)

All-in-all, not the worst way to spend a Friday in front of the TV for movie & pizza night when you've been married for 25 years, but we're pretty boring, so take from that what you will.

Disappointed and Missing the Good Movies

As part of the 80s/90s rom/com generation, I was excited to finally see something new from Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell. However, the story, the dialogue, all of it was just average to bad. I watched because I like Reese and Will, but together (in this story) was a mismatch - zero chemistry. It fell flat from the start and never picked up. The only thing that made it slightly better was Leann Morgan, Jenni Viswanathan and Jack McBrayer - they were the "toothpicks" holding up the proverbial dock which was this sinking movie. I don't know what happened to the.

I miss the genius that created movies like Sixteen Candles, Say Anything, You've Got Mail, Notting Hill, and even Sweet Home Alabama. Will we ever see a great one again?

I watched because of Leanne Morgan.

I really watched this because I wanted to see Leanne Morgan. I typically don't watch silly romcom, and this truly was a silly romcom. So if you're into that sort of thing, it's perfect for that genre.

Nothing really stood out. It was entertaining and fun to watch. Story was good. Jack McBrayer was a highlight. As well as Leanne Morgan, who is adorable.

One things that kind of bugged me, being southern I can pick up on different southern accents. The mother's accent was truly a Carolina accent, while Leanne's was Tennessee hillbilly. To be truly authentic, their accents should've been more similar since they were mother and daughter. Just just.a minor thing.

Ferrell and Witherspoon Know Comedy But Romantic Sparks Elude Them

Director/writer Nicholas Stoller must have recognized the challenge he had in casting Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon as a romantic pair in this 2025 comedy because he basically waits until the end of the film to deal with the dilemma. In the meantime, he focuses the energy on the revenge hijinks that occur when a reservation mishap leads to a double-booking of a lakeside mansion for competing wedding parties. Ferrell plays Jim, an oversensitive, widowed father of one bride, who has a somewhat disturbingly close relationship with his daughter in Atlanta. Witherspoon is Margot, a Type-A LA-based reality TV producer who wants to plan the wedding of her pregnant baby sister, even though the relationship she has with the rest of her deceptively genteel Southern family is quite dysfunctional. Initially upon discovery of the scheduling conflict, Jim and Margot are willing to work together and compromise, but of course, conflict and increasingly elaborate shenanigans ensue. Ferrell and Witherspoon are masters at their respective comedy styles and get a lot of mileage out of the sight gags (like an errant alligator), contrived plot mechanics, and clever under-the-breath asides. It all works well enough until that awkward point of no return. A solid supporting cast helps with standout work from Leanne Morgan as Margot's sexually desperate sister, Keyla Monterroso Mejia as an overzealous maid of honor, and Celia Weston as Margot's dismissive mother. If the film stopped fifteen minutes earlier than it does, it would've greatly improved.

I loved it!

I thought Will Ferrell, Reese Witherspoon, and Leaane Morgan were fantastic in this. I thought it was hysterical. The alligator scene was a bit over the top though. There were a couple other scenes that were also a bit ridiculous. I absolutely was thrilled to see Leanne Morgan. She's my family's absolute favorite comedian. I initially watched it just to see her. But I actually really enjoyed the rest of the movie as well. It has a light-hearted, funny plot, a dynamite cast, and some great quotes. I've watched it a few times. Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell were fantastic, as they are in every movie they're in.

Good fun

So here's the thing: it's not a bad movie-far from it. In fact, it's surprising that self-declared Ferrell fans are calling it bad when, really, it's just another classic "film with Will Ferrell in it."

I honestly found the script good - messy, yes, but good nonetheless - with a gallery of characters who are all exquisitely mediocre, like people you meet in real life (because, let's be honest, most of us are, in the grand scheme of things, absolutely and utterly unremarkable). Ironically, I suspect this very aspect of the film is what truly annoyed some viewers. And maybe the seemingly inconsequential plot too, although for me, that only made it more fun.

I also really enjoyed the chapter structure and the cinematography/editing, which gave it a distinct personality.

If you like Will Ferrell, quirky comedies with borderline nonsensical plot twists, and delightfully horrible people, don't be fooled by the negative reviews-this movie is a lot of fun.

Complete insult

So it feels like someone about 14 wrote this film and they thought it would be funny using ridiculous language. Completely ridiculous. Reese Witherspoon, you are worthy of much better material. Will, what was your inspiration. Yes money talks but both of you should have declined this project after reading the first 3 pages of dialogue. Hollywood, people in general are not as stupid as you might think. I don't even know who the target audience for this train wreck is? If these kinds of projects keep getting green lit I think in a short period of time people will stop going to Netflix for new content. Total waste of time.

I do (find it funny).

'You're Cordially Invited (2025)' is a comedy about a double-booked wedding that sees overprotective dad Will Ferrell go up against no-nonsense sister Reece Witherspoon in an effort to ensure their closest family members get the big day they deserve. It's tempting to say the film isn't hilarious (which it isn't), and there is a sense that it's slightly shoddy in its execution (thanks to its occasionally iffy editing, strange structure, runtime that undeniably drags a bit, odd insistence on adding some unneeded rom to its com, and generally very by-the-numbers narrative), but I think it's more important to acknowledge that it is genuinely funny more than once and is mostly always amusing enough to keep a smile on your face. Ferrell and Witherspoon play off each other well, even if their chemistry doesn't exactly scream "will they/ wont they?". It's pretty obvious that a lot of the most successful jokes are improvisations, leading to the reasonable assumption that its stars are essentially carrying the entire thing on their backs, but that isn't a bad thing; it just means the filmmakers knows how to leverage their most expensive assets to improve the likely initially underwhelming material they're bringing to life. The bottom line is that it makes me laugh way more often than a lot of comedies do, and that's worth celebrating. It also has basic but satisfying character arcs, simple but sweet messaging, an excellent ensemble cast who make even the least interesting scenes totally watchable, and a typically good-natured approach that keeps you in high spirits throughout. It isn't great, but it's a lot better than I expected it to be given its very middling reception. It's a rock-solid comedy that should give you a good giggle or two.

Comedy so cheap it should say "Made in China"

Im asked if this review contains spoilers? Watched the first 5 minutes and you literally know exactly how this movie will play out and end. This is the absolute worst Will Ferrell movie to date. Seriously do writers actually review this dribble? All the jokes are god awful. "My job is in business where we make business for other businesses?" Seriously? And the constant swearing to get the shock and awe factor. Just absolute garbage. Do 6th graders actually write this? Right away in the beginning you know EXACTLY what is going to happen. Omg they double booked the same wedding on the same day on this tiny ass island because the old lady dropped dead! Didn't see that one coming. I am beyond sick of this new cheap comedy wave. When will it possibly end?

Stop the pearl clutching already

All of these negative reviews about dirty language and inappropriate behavior should have just not watched an R rated movie.

While this is not the best movie I have ever seen, it is far from the worst and it's being dragged by people that think the F word is jaw dropping offensive but they still made the choice to watch an R rated comedy. What did they think the R was for exactly?

It started strong but it fell off with some unnecessary and poorly pieced together storylines. I personally think they should have leaned in harder with the language and had they kept the dialogue filthy it would have been even better. Reese Witherspoon throwing side eye and using R rated level language is just a good fu@&ing time.

The younger cast are overshadowed by Witherspoon and Ferrell which kind of sucks but it was a choice. Geraldine Viswanathan is under utilized in this movie and is an absolute comedic beast and should be in more movies and shows. Keyla Monterroso Mejia Was is another example of potential being wasted because this actress and her ability to deadpan is straight up stellar. If these two actresses were cast as leads together, it would be hard to beat and I hope that someone that sees the magic and will make it happen.

Definitely not an Oscar contender but it is an absolutely adequate alternative from doom scrolling and the Muskification of current headlines.
