Dark Comedy

If you're a fan of shows like Search Party, and I definitely am, this one's for you. Great upcoming comedic ensemble cast with lots of surprising cameos too. Smart, funny writing and premise which keeps you engaged as it twists and turns. There are a lack of comedies out in streaming and especially dark satirical series like this one. Bonus this is a highly bingeable watch. No spoilers here, just a recommendation to watch it with all of this in mind. I've seen some poor reviews here and I truly think it's because they don't understand the genre. Must have a second season Peacock, it was really good.

Lost the charm of the original...

First.. watch the original 2011 New Zealand show (same title - same premise).

This incarnation of the concept is decent.

Hsu does a fantastic job. No complaints with any of the cast really. The acting across the board is pretty good.

However, the writing is a bit lackluster.. funny in spots for sure, and it shines when the focus is comedy or the dark humor. Unfortunately, this show moves a bit too far into the "sappy" side of things. It's a bit too much of a "love story" overall. Seemingly just sticking with dark humor was not enough. In addition, it gets a tad tiring listening to every single character berate Ruby episode after episode after episode.

If anyone has seen the original NZ version of the show, it's based on the same premise.. "killer v"... but is far, far, far less "sappy" or "love story" oriented. That was the charm of the show originally, the dark nature of the humor without all the over indulgent self-reflection and apparent need to create some drippingly sappy love story.

In this series, by the end of episode 6 the series ending starts getting fairly predictable. It becomes so easy to predict how the last 2 episodes will play out.

Overall.. if they removed all the "love story" stuff it would have been a MUCH better series, but even with that in mind, it wasn't that bad. I don't regret watching it once, but will probably never watch it again. I'd tune in to a renewal, but wouldn't be surprised if one season, ending on that ever-present cliffhanger, is all it gets. The NZ series did have (only) 2 seasons, so there's precedent for that.. we'll see.

Watch pat the first episode

The first episode was hard to watch, but you need it because it lays out how horrible Ruby is. It's necessary. It gets so much better and more ridiculous as the season goes on, especially the gravitas Stephanie and Zosia give the most inane situations and conversations. Give it time and get to know the characters. Everyone has a weird and shiny moment, and there's a big laugh almost every episode. There are a couple of surprise guests along the way, adding to the zaniness, although with one of them, I got a little uncomfortable with how she sent up some of her famous history for a laugh, but with the other, who to me will always be the doctor from Lost, I had no complaints. He needs to be a mysterious figure on every show, in my opinion.

Fun, Quirky Binge-Worthy Series

Binged worthy entertaining series. The show's humour had me laughing in stitches at times, thanks to good choice of casting who can delivered strong believable performances for unbelievable plot.

The pacing was generally well-balanced, keeping me engaged throughout. I appreciated that the storyline wasn't predictable, keeping me on my toes.

The tone remained consistent throughout the series, which helped maintain the show's momentum. The soundtracks was absolute highlight, perfectly complementing the episodes.

My only criticism lies with the season finale. The approaching climax ending didn't quite match the pace of the preceding episodes and felt it was rewritten to allow for possible renewal.

Overall, I'd highly recommend Laid for its entertaining story, memorable characters, and tracks.

PLEASE RENEW THIS

I laughed harder at a show than I have in years. (I went to business school...) We had to rewind so many times to hear dialogue we'd missed because we were laughing too hard. Or crying. We did some of that too.

The first one or two episodes moved pretty slowly as the writers took their time in demonstrating the self-involvement of the lead character. But the show picks up quickly and is worth every minute. Every episode brought more laughs than we've had from most comedies. The story arc is almost entirely character-driven, but there is real revelation and development rather than the rinse and repeat cycle of most TV dramas.

We can't wait for a second season.

Just Didn't Gel For Me

The show was okay for me. It's a fun premise, but it just didn't stick the landing. The cast is good but for the most part, the chemistry between most of the actors seemed off. A lot of the jokes (visual or verbal) didn't land. The story had a habit of forgetting storylines or not fleshing them out. For example: the storyline with the cop never goes anywhere so why bother having it. The show did focus on a lot of banter between characters and little on story development. Ruby didn't do much to save her boyfriends and they were dying in too rapid-fire fashion to have any meaning. There's a lot of pop culture references dropped during the series and quite a few seemed out of place for characters in their 30's. It highlighted the show not being as finely honed as it could've been.

Hilarious and inventive show

First I want to address the reviews complaining about this show centering around an awful person. This is true. Guess what? That's the premise of Seinfeld, Difficult People, Will and Grace, Curb Your Enthusiasm, VEEP, Girls, Will and Grace, Arrested Development, Strangers with Candy, Archer, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia AND Absolutely Faboulous. This is nothing new, it's not specific to this generation, and I would even say that Laid, if it continues to be as hilarious as it is, will stand among these shows as one of the better comedies, particularly *because* it is about an awful person and still manages to make us (eventually) root for her. If people are complaining about this promise now then you can throw out the last thirty years of comedy too.

Beyond that, the premise it super interesting, the show is well paced and the jokes are very funny throughout. There is a scene in first (maybe second?) episode that is one of the funniest thing I've seen in years.

If you need your characters to be selfless angels in unfunny situations this show is not for you. But if you're looking for something extremely funny and fun give this a chance.

Love Actually meets Final Destination

"Laid" (S01, 8-eps, 30-min, Peacock) This is clearly a showcase for Stephanie Hsu who EPs and stars in this fun, superficial comedy. Her character, Ruby, is a flighty and very promiscuous party planner. She soon realizes that former romantic conquests are unexpectedly dying so the balance of the series is her, with costar Zosier Mamet as AJ, treating this as a true crime thing that needs to be solved before more die. I have to agree with other reviewers that note Stephanie thinks too highly of herself in this role given she's a 4 (with makeup) so plausibility takes a hit. Though she doesn't resolve her mystery, the final scene of the finale opens the door for that resolution in a sophomore season.

Wow...this was awful

I couldn't get past the first entire first episode. This is a show about a woman who is the most miserable, self-centered, awful, fake person ever trying to somehow "do good" after finding out her exes are all dying. The acting is terrible and hollow. There's no emotion or feeling in the acting and it's like the writing comes from the meanest people in the world. Absolutely one of the worst shows I've ever seen. I'm sorry but a show about the meanest people in the world being as the most narcissistic, self-centered and awful to others is a terrible premise. I have no idea how anyone can watch the first episode, which takes place at a funeral by the way, and think the main character has a single redeeming quality or even if she does, she deserves any solace in her life for being absolutely scum to everyone at that funeral because it has to be all about her. That first episode infuriated me to the point I probably won't watch any show the main players are attached to for a long time. This is a disgusting show and deserves to be at the bottom of the barrel.

Funny, raunchy & refreshing

I love a good romance and I love true crime, this show was a nice blend of the two in a way that was, yeah, kind of over the top, but ultimately fun. Ruby isn't really likeable and she's not meant to be but that was kind of endearing and I enjoyed the show from start to finish. She was incredibly selfish but people are and I don't think the heroine in a rom-com needs to be perfect and bubbly and all that each and every time.

I loved her best friend, AJ (back to my own true crime obsession) and her dry delivery of every single line. The dark and raunchy humor was a nice twist and I hope there's a season 2.

Those eyebrows

To be honest, I came here for Zosia Mamet: somehow those eyebrows... I just don't know. Unfortunately, hers is not the main character, but still an important one.

As for the show itself... It's fine. It's not as funny, as one could want. They definitely try, but quite often jokes feel stretched out, forced and flat. There is not enough "soul" in it, I guess? Maybe it's done to seem like "dark humor", and I am missing the point, though.

But the story itself is relatively good, and has a strong message behind it. I would probably drop some of the moments, and compressed it to maybe 6 episodes at most to provide better dynamics, perhaps somewhat close to those raunchy romcoms from the 90s.

I also definitely liked, that unlike a lot of media recently, the main girl is not a "girl boss". Nothing wrong with girl bosses, but the way a lot of them have been portrayed recently is not good, since they are shown with "I do not need anyone, I can do everything myself" kind of attitude, which is actually toxic. Ruby, though is clearly not that. She is far from perfect, and she does need people to help her. In fact, it's kind of a theme here, too, since through-out the season she comes to realizations about herself, that somewhat humble her. Which may be another reason I though of 90s sex comedies

Does this need a second season? Well, since they got such a cliffhanger - definitely, I do know what will happen (especially to Richie), but it probably should have been 1 season with maybe 12 episodes. It's too stretched out at times. Like that signing in the car thing in 1st episode.

NOT Worth Sitting thru Ads For

I watched the trailer and thought I would really like the show.

Nope.

The storyline is original and interesting, and contains lots of opportunities for even further originality.

The acting is good, even if you don't like the characters, or that the two main protagonists have a strong anti-depressant type of chemistry together. (That is to say, none.) The director's style is clean - nothing to write home about; but nothing cring-worthy either.

What literally bombs this show is the SCRIPT! It's. Just. Not. Funny.

In fact, the dialog is soooo tired that it trips over itself moving in between moments. Imagine one very hungover writer doing it all alone, and not showing the script to anyone else before the cold reads. (But then you'd have to imagine everyone else involved not caring enough to say out loud, "This is boring.") There IS a smattering of 'grinnables', but the average wait time in between, along with the winceful other lines is trying.

I couldn't make it past the 2nd episode.

And, what the heck is the "Clog Dropper". I couldn't tell from the off screen sound effect.

fun quirky show

Party planner Ruby Yao (Stephanie Hsu) is going around telling her former sex partners that they are going to die. She and her best friend AJ (Zosia Mamet) had discovered that many of her exes are dying under unusual circumstances.

This is an American remake of an Australian show. Stephanie Hsu has a nice comedic touch and Zosia Mamet has made a career out of the quirky best friend roles. I would like better with the guys. Michael Angarano is fine, but the other guys are a bit too dull. This is generally a fun quirky show. It only got one season. I do wonder if this premise could hold for much longer.

Really Enjoyed!!!

Zosia alone is worth watching the series. She eats up every scene she's in. Her humanity and warmth to Ruby's vapidness and self absorption plays so well. It took me a few episodes to understand how I was supposed to view Ruby and once I caught on? I was down for the ride! I liked each episode better as they went on. I'm not sure there is redemption for Ruby but would like a second series to see where these characters go. I have many questions about Issac, I have a feeling there is a lot more there not yet explored. Ritchie isn't done yet either. Fun celeb pop ups with Simu Liu and Chloe Fineman.

Minus the Premise this is all me.

Please keep this show. I love it so much. The performances are incredible. I'm still ugh in my 30s and failing to find love. The show hits all right moments that I'm sure are lame to those who aren't going through it. But I needed this. It sheds light on my own selfish moments. I love that there are also murders going on in the background but this show could not be more relevant to the straight dating scene. Well at least here in the Midwest. I love Shu Shu. She's the breakout star of my generation and I love her. If anyone can make it, she can. Also, if you need to drag it out for 8 seasons. I'll manage 😂

The characters are so unlikeable

I really wanted to like this show but the protagonist is just annoying and really unlikable, same with her friend. The guy that was hit by a car was the most likable character in the first episode after he went it went downhill. Went to the second episode to keep trying and it just got cringier and more awful. Would give a 0 if I could. This is a novel idea and could have been executed better but the casting is just not good and the characters are completely unrelatable and honestly just plain boring. This could have been executed better but the writing makes he protagonist completely selfish and kind of nasty.

PLEASE RENEW

I understand the hate that some people have for this show. It is tough in the beginning to like the characters and the best friend's obsession with the deaths of her ex's can feel like it's lacking empathy but as the show goes on I think it really grows. I like that her ex's are calling her out on being a selfish person because I think we always see ourselves as the one doing the right thing or being the good one in a relationship. I like that it makes the Ruby analyze her relationships with others in her life and her relationship with her father. I just wish it didn't end on such a cliff hanger!

Better than I expected

I randomly found this show scrolling through Peacock and it did not disappoint. I was iffy for the first two episodes and pushed through and then couldn't stop watching. The first season has 8 episodes, and I didn't know that when I started watching. After the 8th and another didn't come, I audibly yelled wanting more. I know a second season isn't confirmed but I really would love more of this show. It's a great mix of easy to watch, a little love and romance, a little bit of strong female friendship and some comedy. Little raunchy as well. My fiancé got into it too so not just a show for the ladies, too!

A meaningless, meandering series that tries to be funny but fails.

If it wasn't for Zosia Mamet, I would have bailed on this stupid series. I did manage to fast forward through much of this to get to the end. The lead actress lacks charm and charisma. She has no sense of comedic timing. She is supposed to be some sort of sex kitten that men can't resist, but there is nothing sexy about her. She is not pretty and her body is shapeless.

By all accounts her character is a horrible person who has no remorse for the horrible things she does. We are supposed to have sympathy for her character but that was impossible for me. The two male leads behave like women themselves, and the overall theme of this series is that casual sex is better than love and commitment, and both of these women seem to prefer weak effeminate men instead of finding husbands that would be strong fathers.

This series represents everything that is wrong with Hollywood today and America in general. Women avoid alpha males in search of beta males with gay characteristics. Men are killed in horrible ways and it's a running joke throughout. If this was a dark comedy that would have worked, but it's an aimless series with an unbelievable plot line that shift tones more often than my guitar pedals.

It's great to see Zosia Mamet in anything. The second star is for her.

Stephanie Hsu KILLS!

Stephanie was so great in this! Loved it evrytime she was ok screen and her little mannerisms and quirks made her character hilariously flawed! Is she self-centered? Of course, but it makes her the anti-hallmark movie romance. And Zosia as the "straight man" as always plays well against these crazy characters. Definitely hoping for a season 2! The only character I didn't like was Zach, just hated everytime he was on screen. Richie was great and always fun to see Olvia Holt pop up. May even give it a rewatch soon. It reminded me of "You're the Worst". And also watching the Australian version. Fair dinkum.

Disappointed

First, as a big Stephanie fan, this is no indictment on her, but this character is so cringe and very unlikable. It's hard to root for her eventual turnaround when she can't even be honest with her so-called best friend.

Premise intriguing, coupled by having Stephanie in the lead, however the writing is lazy, mixed with stereotypical humor and little to no stakes to pull you in to what again should've been a promising premise of a show.

Are we supposed to care about her character redemption or was this show a way for other women to perhaps find comfort in a correlation of events during that decade between 20-30 where body count and bj overlay with ghosting is excusable. I can hear the audience saying, "yep, this was TOTALLY me! Lololol" And yes, I'd feel the same way if this was a gender reversed show with a male terrible character.

Either way, this just wasn't fun.

Love Hsu and Mamet

This show shines when it focuses on the friend love story between Hsu and Mamet, who are both really fun to watch and play dark comedy really well. It loses its footing a bit when it veers into rom-com territory.

The whole show is really well cast and the ensemble is fun to watch, and I loved the look at Millennial life-it was nice to see characters who aren't rich (at least not most of them), funny actors with great, expressive faces, and the Seattle setting was a bonus. Excellent music choices as well. On the down side, the plot makes no real sense, the tone is uneven, and the season feels two episodes too long due to a sort of pointless love triangle.

I'd definitely watch a second season, provided it was really about Hsu and Mamet getting their Nancy Drew on. For those who liked Search Party (this show also features John Early, who is always a treat) and After Party and have seen enough true crime docs to get the references.
