Want to stream cartoons on a Saturday morning like the old days (but via modern technology)? Maybe don’t turn to Apple TV+.

The core Apple SVOD service has all but abandoned developing animated shows at a clip that would make Netflix blush, a new study from Luminate Intelligence has found.

In (late) 2019, when Apple TV+ launched, the service ordered all of one animated series — it was very early days. Three animated shows were ordered in 2020 and eight greenlights came in 2021, more than Peacock, Prime Video and Paramount+ (but less than Max and Hulu, and significantly less than Disney+ and Netflix). It was the pandemic, and turning to animation simply made sense; Frog and Toad did not need to quarantine.

As things returned to normal in 2022, everyone but Apple TV+ (and Netflix, which was basically flat) began to shrink their animated development slates. Apple’s 15 series orders, meanwhile, nearly doubled...

Sago Mini Friends is returning for its third season. A sneak peek has been released teasing what is next for Harvey, the floppy-eared dog, and his best friends, Jinja the cat, Jack the rabbit, and Robin the bird.

Season two of the animated series for preschoolers, inspired by the Sago Mini World app, was released in January. Five episodes have been produced for season three.

In the above trailer for the upcoming Netflix rom-com, “New York sportswriter Mack (Rodriguez) has spent years devising successful hook-up ‘plays’ with best friend Adam (Wayans Jr.) and their crew. Apple TV+ today released the trailer for season two of ‘Harriet the Spy’, based on the iconic children’s novel chronicling the coming-of-age adventures of the irrepressible Harriet M Welsch, premiering on May 5, 2023. Produced by The Jim Henson Company, the animated series stars Golden Globe nominee Beanie Feldstein as Harriet, a fiercely independent and adventurous 11-year-old girl, alongside Emmy Award winner Jane Lynch as Ole Golly, Harriet’s larger-than-life, no-nonsense nanny.

Apple TV+ has announced premiere dates for new and returning shows geared toward kids and families. Viewers will see Eva the Owlet (new series), Frog and Toad (new series), Jane (new series), Harriet the Spy (season two), Pinecone & Pony (season two), Pretzel and the Puppies (season two), and Stillwater (season three) on the streaming service in the months to come.

Sago Mini Friends, a new special, will also be released, along with the A Charlie Brown Valentine special (above). The latter first aired on ABC in 2002.

Apple TV+ announced its spring kids and family slate, which includes Peanuts specials new to the platform, a variety of original series and a “Frog and Toad” show, based on the beloved Arnold Lobel books.

“Frog and Toad,” premiering on April 28, boasts a voice cast including Nat Faxon, Kevin Michael Richardson, Ron Funches, Fortune Feimster, Cole Escola, Aparna Nancherla, Yvette Nicole Brown, Margaret Cho and more. Rob Hoegee serves as showrunner, with Titmouse producing the animation. EPs are Hoegee, Adrianne Lobel, Adam Lobel and Titmouse’s Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio and Ben Kalina.

Per Apple: “Frog and Toad are best friends who know that the true secret to friendship is not only enjoying the things you have in common, but embracing the things that make you different. Our differences are what makes us special, and Frog and Toad celebrate them in what makes them unique.”

Normalcy is returning to television series’ release pattern after a couple of Covid-affected years. Streamers have made for a busy summer with buzzy shows such as Stranger Things, House of the Dragon and Lotr: The Rings of Power. They will soon be joined by the broadcast networks, whose main series roster is sticking to the traditional season that kicks off in the fall. Here is Deadline’s annual list of the fall premiere dates for new and returning series.
