30 mins of fun.

I was reluctant to watch this, due to the lack of common sense in most TV shows nowadays.

But I'm glad I gave it a go.

These are 30 min episodes that are goofy, cheesy, funny, dramatic and engaging. Likeable characters and light entertainment.

Watched all 6 episodes and I'm looking forward to a season 2. A couple of cliffhangers to end the series nicely.

I'd recommend checking this out and it's a perfect runtime that fits perfectly into a half hour show. Any longer and it would have dragged on.

The French soundtrack is engaging too. I'm going to look for it on YouTube music.

Check it out.

The Fargo is strong in this one

In rural Quebec, Ruth Landry (Margo Martindale) is struggling to maintain her maple tree farm while her husband is in a coma. The tyrannical association chief Leonard Sr. Is looking steal her property on the cheap. Remy Bouchard (Guillaume Cyr) is the frustrated lone security guard at the association warehouse. Mike Byrne (Chris Diamantopoulos) is a low level bagman with a Boston mob family.

The Fargo is strong in this one. Like that franchise, this could have been a movie or a TV show. It also has the snow, the quirky criminals and small town folks, and even the true/not true story. Homage has been paid. The actors are led by the greatness of Margo Martindale and the slightly unhinged Chris Diamantopoulos. Two things do worry me at the beginning and they do hold it back somewhat. The story is inherently silly and I'm not sure that the Fargo treatment is worthwhile. The other issue is the language barrier. That does take some getting used to. Despite the slow start, the show leaves me wanting more.

The Sticky - great Fun!

"The Sticky" was great fun! The entire cast was phenomenal, with Jamie Lee Curtis delivering a brilliant performance as always. But I was particularly impressed by Margo Martindale - she absolutely shines in her role. The sharp, witty dialogue kept me constantly entertained, and I'm really hoping for a second season. This show has a unique blend of humor and crime drama that I haven't seen in a while.

Here's hoping the creators decide to give us more! The unexpected twists and turns kept me guessing throughout, and the Canadian setting added a unique flavor to the story. It's absolutely worth checking out. You won't be disappointed.

Starts Off Well...

This series starts off so well and then sort of... tanks.

I didn't realise this was "season 1". I was lead to believe it was a full story told in 6 parts. Because of that, it's both not enough -leaves you hanging- and is stretched too thin.

The casting and production design are terrific, but it's like the original Twin Peaks: once the "big crime" is solved, the story's over. Trying to draw it out with extraneous subplots becomes painful no matter how much we enjoy spending time with these quirky characters.

I realise I should have soaked this review in syrupy jokes, but maple trees are always sad because they're so sappy...

Hilarious dark comedy mini-series from Canada

As Episode 1 of "The Sticky" (2024 release from Canada; 6 episodes of about 30 min each) opens, we are reminded that "This is absolutely not the true story of the Great Maple Syrup Heist", which took place in 2011. In the opening scenes, the local Quebec police is called to quell a disturbance, only to find the body of a man in a maple barrel, murdered for reasons unknown. We then are introduced to Ruth, who tends to her maple tree farm but as it turns out she doesn't have the proper license for this, and she may lose the farm... At this point we are less than 10 minutes into Episode 1.

Couple of comments: This is a dark comedy series from Canada, more specifically from Quebec, where maple syrup is big business. I have no idea to what extent this mini-series accurately reflects what happened in the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist of 2011, but frankly it's not even relevant. The reason is that this mini-series is absolutely hilarious and fun from start to finish. I laughed out loud quite a few times throughout these 6 episodes as this mini-series is quirky, dry, and even absurd at times (in the best possible way). The no-star ensemble cast is stellar. Comedy, good comedy, is incredibly difficult to do, but this mini-series delivers.

"The Sticky" started streaming on Amazin Prime last month, and I just discovered it. I watched all 6 episodes in a single setting. THis mini-series is currently rated 82% Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. If you are in the mood for a quirky dark comedy starring our neighbors of the north, I'd readily suggest you check this out, and draw your own conclusion.

This series reminded me of the Fargo series which I loved... it's a high 8 imo as it held my interest.. just sad that it's just 6 30 minute episodes. Margo Martindale is her usual terrific self... love all her roles. I didn't know that Canada produces over 70% of the world's maple syup... 90% of that from Quebec. I remember a story about 10-12 years ago of a maple syrup heist in Quebec... millions of dollars worth so I had to watch this. The supporting cast are all wonderful too... the story having a French/Quebec flavor (syrupy analogy lol). The music is interesting as all these familiar hits are tastefully recreated in the French language with beautiful voices. The scenery is so Quebec rural which lends to the realism of the story. The story is a drama but with some tasteful comedy. Jamie Lee really adds to it and it was great seeing her again on the screen. It's not a long drawn out series like many so it makes a nice light change... I recommend it highly... a must see.

Okay. But stretched out.

This started well, with a nice premise. Like many other reviews have noted it has elements of Fargo about it, but is in no way as sharp or innovative.

The cast are great throughout, but the piece feels stretched out much further than it should be, the plot gets going then slows, the comedy as the series goes on begins to feel forced and the padding of shots and extended sequences becomes a problem that starts making the plot feel disjointed and stuttering.

I read that they were hoping for a season two (hence the way the finale plays out) I doubt if they'll get one, and even if they do another season of this would slow to a crawl.

Could have been much much better as a two part mini series with two feature length episodes.

We know how to have fun in Québec!

Nice and sweet television serie! The whole thing is good entertainment and nothing more. It is based on an actual fact but. Far from the real story that you can google. It is fast pace and short episodes wich makes it even more attractive.

And YES, as a local everybody hates the Maple cartel and does accentuate a real problem with free trade.

I have not more less to write but if I want this review to show , I need to write six hundred caracters minimum. So in my opinion this is a deterrant to many users that will simply NOT write anything substancial. So for my last 28 words, I do recommend you watch this show.

Canada Number 3 Grade Syrup

I want to start by mentioning that I went into this show with medium-to-light expectations, so there was no major let-down or any real surprises. I knew about the real maple heist, saw the preview, and thought it would be a fun watch.

And it can be a fun watch, if you're into a low-grade rip off of Fargo by folks who do not understand any of the functional ingredients of the Coen brother's movies. And I guess it could be said all the little elements they snatched from other movies could be homage and hat tips, if they didn't feel so awkwardly and inappropriately confident in their uniqueness. There's a certain smugness to the writing and direction that, frankly, is un-earned. It's someone else's work regurgitated time and time again. It's the end of the game of telephone, and the phrase is almost unrecognizable.

The only real draw to the show, the one that kept me watching to the end, was the cast. They're giving it 100%, even if the characters were all the same archetypes that those actors seem to always play these days. Snarky, homely, bad-a**, weird-bad-a**. It seems like certain cast members are unable to escape the type cast that's captured them. I want a better range for them, even if they're truly great at what they've been continuously trapped in doing.

What a ride!!

I never expected it to be so good! There's drama, tension, suspense and the dialogues are candidly hilarious! Every character is thoroughly developed, even if they appear just for a couple of minutes.

However, as the plot progresses, it seems that in spite of the complex and personal issues each of the three main characters experience, the show is mostly comedic, and the proof of that is that the director has perfectly nailed what makes a great comedy : the MOVEMENT.

Indeed, most of the 'funny movies or series' which are released nowadays lack this essential substance, namely actors who know how to use MOVEMENT for comedic effects.

Hands down to the direction.

A score of 7 or even 8 has been demolished by the season finale

This is a refreshing crime comedy series! Centering the plot around maple syrup is quite ingenious and the decision for 30 minutes per episode works quite well. The scripting holds up for most of the time, sometimes you can hear the keyboards of the authors clicking.

But what makes this series really worth watching is the casting: They are all doing an impressive job, highlights are the leading role Margo Martindale and, as always, the impeccable Jamie Lee Curtis. For those two alone, my recommendation holds up.

However, be prepared for a truly disappointing last episode of season one for the incomprehensible decision to cut the story line right in the middle of the climax.

Above Average

Produced by Jason Blum and Jamie Lee Curtis for Amazon Prime, we follow Ruth Landry (Margo Martindale), who along with some old and new friends plots to steal millions worth of maple syrup in revenge against the syrup associations owner. Definitely not Blumhouse studios normal kinda stuff, and also starring Chris Diamantopolos as Mike, a low level crime family mobster who kicks off the whole thing, I quite liked him in Mrs. Davis so was fun to see him in this, I hope he continues getting more. The writing is decent, especially given the fully fictionalized nature of it after the real life heist incident its seudo-based on (but also not at all), however it does get a bit formulaic in its mob family stuff. All shot in Quebec, and only a single season of 6 episodes so far, my biggest gripe is I went in expecting a miniseries only for a relatively large cliffhanger to be left at the end and a push for season two, which may or may not happen at this point. I hope we see it, but for a fun, short comedy, sure I'd recommend.

Great Idea Poorly Written and Executed

This could have been a great watch, instead, for anyone who has lived and worked in Quebec, it feels forced and inauthentic. Absolutely no francophone would speak English to each other, especially family members. Why not spew some awesome Quebecois slang and have it subtitled? The setting is vague and undefined. A small town with a sushi restaurant? Ruth is the only anglophone? Where are the colourful details that make Quebec Quebec?

Margot Martindale is a powerhouse performer but it feels like she was directed to be one note, angry, grumpy and foul-mouthed. Sadly sporadic comedic lines are poorly delivered, couched in the wrong tone.

Good storytelling is telling a complete story but leave viewers still wanting more. Especially in the streaming landscape, no one needs a cliffhanger to tune in for another season. There is plenty of Canadian cast, crew and creative influence here despite the American writers so we can't blame it on their lack of familiarity with the province, sadly, it is just poor execution.

Qite good, but it could have been great!

I sat to try this out last night because I'm a Margo Martindale fan. I ended up watching the whole thing. Funny, cheesy, silly, goofy, with a sprinkling of very touching moments. An all-around good time!

Here is where it missed the mark. The story is set in Québec, the largest producer of maple syrup, and features quality french-speaking Québec actors. Unfortunately, the dialog between the québécois characters is mostly in English, which makes it look inauthentic.

It would have been so much better with Margo Martindale (excellent as always) as an English-speaking resident and the hysterically funny Mike Burn and Bo characters speaking English dialog between themselves and with the French characters, but with dialog between the French fathers and sons, between the two cops, between farmers, etc, entirely in Québec French with subtitles. An opportunity missed, sad.

That said, Guillaume Cyr and Guy Nadon are very good, as is the always wonderful Suzanne Clément albeit in a minor role. What a joy Chris Diamantopoulos is! I'd never seen him before; he made me laugh out loud several times per episode!

Laugh out Loud Fun

I was forced to write this because of the reviews below 7/10 that I read. I just strongly disagree and want people to give this little gem a chance. It apparently is very loosely based on the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist of 2011. It is a refreshing surprise from the start. It is a little reminiscent of Fargo but done more for laughs. The characters are off beat and engaging. The acting is way above average with some surprise appearances. Every episode has a few laugh out loud moments and a few genuine surprises I didn't see coming. I am hoping for a second season, but if not, I'll just watch it again.

Way too much fun

A collection of oddball characters in terrible situations trying to manage a heist of maple syrup to salvage their financial problems. Ruth, whose husband is in a coma, has lost her right to sell maple syrup to the cartel, run by Leonard. It seems her husband owns the rights to harvest the syrup, so she has been fined for using his rights illegally. Remy, sort of a sadsack character is the guard at the warehouse where all the syrup is stored and was sneaking a barrel or two out of the warehouse at night, with a friend who suddenly gets killed. He is the only guard for the entire stock of maple syrup. Since Ruth got into financial trouble the only way forward was stealing on a much larger scale, and she and Remy brought Mike into the scheme. Mike comes off as a power who can get big things done. The truth is quite different. And with all the clashes of personalities and mix ups, it almost becomes a Keystone cops caper. Each time they seem to have things under control, snags happen, and their approach to trying to solve it is a great part of the humor. A cop-out is that is leads to a second season, so there are loose ends galore. And as made very clear, this is not how the actual theft was done. So this is a funny fictional account. And a very interesting cameo appearance.

perfect balance between dark humor, suspense, and quirky storytelling.

The Sticky is a surprisingly entertaining series that strikes a perfect balance between dark humor, suspense, and quirky storytelling. Drawing clear inspiration from shows like Fargo and Breaking Bad, it combines crime drama with offbeat comedy in a way that feels fresh and engaging.

The acting performances are top-notch, with the cast delivering memorable and nuanced portrayals of their characters. Each episode is filled with unexpected twists that keep you guessing, ensuring there's never a dull moment.

Another highlight is the pacing-each episode is satisfyingly concise, making it easy to binge without feeling dragged down by filler.

In short, The Sticky is a clever, well-crafted series that will appeal to fans of smart, darkly comedic crime dramas. Definitely worth watching!

I would have rated it a lot higher ;but....

The show deserves a higher rating ;but cutting off the season at 6 episodes just so they could make 2 seasons was a garbage decision by whoever decided on it.

I get cliffhangers are all the rage ;but how many times have shows not been renewed and the people who enjoy the show been letdown?

I can't count on one hand how many shows I think were amazing ;but ended with an unresolved cliffhanger. I'll name just a few as examples, My Name Is Earl, Ash VS. Evil Dead and Last Man On Earth ;but there are MANY more I could list (even if just to fill the stupid 600 letter requirement).

The viewers who invest the time into these shows are the ones who get screwed over and it happens way too often these days.

This entire story could have been told in a 10 episode season ;but they'll drag it out to give us 6 more episodes.

Well Worth Swift Six episodes Fun

Beautiful setting, and most jokes land.

Ham acting by both Margo M and Chris D. Are both a strength and a weakness to the show sometimes adding to the humor and sometimes taking away from the credibility of the premise.

A lot of the actions by Mike were really questionable and some confrontation between characters feel repetitive. I think what would've really helped is flesh out both Ruth and Mike's characters much more in earlier episodes making it a total of 8 episodes. That's why sometimes the series might feel just a bit underbaked.

Ep5 featuring Jamie Lee C is obviously the highlight of the entire series. Mad fun half hour!

Overall Holiday Season is usually a total lull of programming barring trash family movies . WATCH THIS and increase its chances of a renewal !

Absolutely love it

My gosh, such a great series. Love the cast. Live the storyline and the light humor.

I like that there was a ton of violence, but still had the scenes with the badass people like with Jaymie Lee Curtis.

Maybe I'm biased because I'm Canadian, but I feel like I have to watched anything this good in a while.

Honestly kinda wish there was more.

Lastly, while there was some French thrown in there, it was just the right amount that you didn't have to read a ton of subtitles or wonder what they were saying.

Thanks to all the cast that said yes to this one. Definitely captured Canadian culture and attitudes. Spot on.

Very entertaining, well acted and creatively written

I had nothing to watch one night so I thought I'd give this show a go because I like Margo Martindale in Ozarks. Yes it did seem Fargo-like at first and it did appear to be a more serious show the 1st couple episodes. I was thinking 'this doesn't make sense and is a bit far fetched' but then the plot tightens with many unexpected twists. It also becomes comical. Chris Diamantopoulos is hilarious as a bumbling mafia hitman. He really does nail the part. Jamie Lee Curtis was surprisingly good as a mafia hit woman. I laughed at many scenes as the writing was so spot on and the acting and character building was also top shelf. If you want a series that is just goofy funny but with a serious premise and well written and acted then this is for you.

Okay but a little confused

I will watch it again but did anyone else find the end odd ? They get the syrup, then it stops, 3 or 4 plot lines just got left up in the air.

Occasionally funny, very quirky with a little tension, it nearly got there, but just falls short of being good.

The acting was excellent but the production values reflected a low budget, if the story fell flat because they are hanging out for Season 2 they still could of given the viewer a bit more, to just stop and roll credits was poorly thought out.

One highlight was the oddball Canadian soundtrack, I found that as funny as the scenes, you kept going "I know that one, but it's in French !".
