It's a shame Neil Marshall has gone down to this level. After his magnificent start (Dog Soldiers, Descent, Doomsday) it appears he peaked very early in his career.
The dialogue is very predictable. The story been told a million times and much better.
Unconvincing fights and overlong back and forth shoot outs become tiresome.
Tiger pit was hilariously overused.
The lead actress isn't as drop dead gorgeous as the director seems to think she is.
Her accent grates. Her fighting is terrible.
When so many kick ass female characters out there (Atomic Blonde, Red Sparrow, Nikita, Ava. Anna, Salt to name just a few) all done so much better it's kinda been done to death so if going to do it. Do it well and maybe a little different.
Sean Pertwee is always a fun watch, even if okays the same character in every film. He's a regular with Neil since Dog Soldiers.)
Stephanie Beecham is hilarious as "Charlie" the supposed dangerous hhead of a criminal organisation. But was cringe. Maybe they thought this would be her new breakout rolel playing against type (like Hugh Grant in The Gentlemen) of so then big fail.
Ita not all terrible. Just forced and cliché. The narration by the female lead was irritating straight away. Yes. That Snatch Guy Ritchie era narration wasn't good as the less you heard her voice the better.
Credit to the surprise desert death which I didn't see coming. One of only a few good moments.
Oh Neil. What happened?
Just go watch Atomic Blonde again.

It's that all familiar style of movie with the names of characters popping out to introduce them with some silly narration completely unnecessarily, some "funny" violence and all the characters are some kind of criminals. Except the dialogues are weak, there is not enough action, and it lasts 2 hours.
It's not a total trainwreck, camera work, effects, even the acting is solid but the characters aren't particularly interesting at all. The main lady is attractive.
Some of the characters have a rather strong accent which some might find hard to understand.
I'm not a fan of this type of movie in the first place but even if you are this is one of the weaker ones for sure.

This movie is not that bad as some reviewers say. To start, the voice over of the main character (Duchess) is great, I like that always, gives a bit of background and story telling idea. The famous trick that the beginning scene is a teaser and then back to how it all started, makes you immediately curious. It's fast paced, maybe a bit too long though, never boring. Great performance of. Charlotte Kirk, perfectly casted. Less good in my opinion is the extreme violence showed, not functional and not to my taste. The humor is great, compensates this a bit, the story is not intended to be taken too seriously. The British accents are funny on themselves. All in all worth watching when you expectations are not too high.

Neil Marshall, a filmmaker I used to be a big fan of in the 2000s and early 2010s, is single-handedly ruining his career by making it his prerogative to show off his fiancée Charlotte Kirk in all his recent flicks. She's great eye candy indeed but has the charisma of a block of wood. Same applies to the rest of the cast she's working with. Marshall's desperately trying to pull off a Guy Ritchie here and fails big time. The voiceovers and quirky edits are all lacking the stamp of a seasoned filmmaker, much less their eleventh venture if I were to be precise.
Is this the same guy who astonished us with practical effects in Dog Soldiers and made us gasp for breath in The Descent? Neil, you gotta bounce back man. Don't go down the Rob Zombie path. Don't compromise on the filmmaking vision. Don't treat us to lazily made garbage like Duchess and deem it feminist just because the lead character is a woman. Also, was it unfair to expect some wry Brit humour at least? What a charmless affair!

I read somewhere that this film can be compared to Quentin Tarantino's work, and why not - I immediately got a copy and started watching.
Everything is designed following the template of proven cult classics. The goal of every scene is to shock, to be brutal and comedic. They drink the blood of enemies, and the Colombian necktie is explicitly shown. But...
After the first minute, it becomes clear that this film is just an annoying copy, printed with a faint toner, based on all those films we love and respect. The action is forced. The dialogues are terrible - someone tried to make them good but failed. All the characters are similar - meant to be dangerous but are actually as desperate as the dialogues. The comedic writing of names next to characters who enter the story, after the fifteenth repetition, becomes boring and feels like someone is mocking you to your face.
I think one star is a harsh rating since the actors did at least try to show up for filming. So: two stars.

Poor dialogue, poor acting, the main character whoever she is, is a terrible actress who shows no emotion at all.
All the actors in it have nothing about them.
Something very missing in the story and actors, I feel like a bunch of 14 year olds made this movie.
So 1 star, wouldn't advise anyone to watch it.
Don't waste your time, go find another movie worthy of your time. Not worth watching even if its free. Honestly would rather do the housework than watch this.
Boring movie, boring main actress. This woman has not got her job through talent, other means of getting a job I think.
So basically don't watch it.

Earlier this month, I had binge through all of Neil Marshall's filmography and it was a fun experience for the most part. Now, I just finished watching his latest movie, Duchess (2024) and it was very mediocre.
Positives for Duchess (2024): Charlotte Kirk gives a good performance as the titular character in this movie. There are spots to where the B-Action side of this movie can be fun. And finally, the action sequences in this movie are good.
Negatives for Duchess (2024): The movie's premise is all that interesting to begin with. There are some noticeably bad performances from the other actors. And finally, the movie's runtime is dragged out way too long.
Overall, Duchess (2024) is one of those movies where it depends on you go into this movie and what you are expecting from it, so I would recommend that you go check this movie out for yourself.

Duchess starts off well. The titular heroine, Charlotte Monaghan, falls for a charming, dynamic man who pulls her into his high-flying drug-funded lifestyle. The twist is that she's more than tough enough to make a go of it. Their relationship seems perfect.
From the outset, Marshall uses a variety of visual touches reminiscent of Guy Ritchie movies - freeze-frames, bold text captions, colorful narration in the heroine's distinctive voice (the most shameless over-the-top cockney accent since Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins).
The performances make it work. Charlotte Kirk is not entirely convincing in the lead role, but she's very likable in a deliberately cartoony way. Philip Winchester is effortlessly charming as her crime-boss beau - I'd like to see much more of him in other roles. Sean Pertwee, a Neil Marshall regular, is welcome as always, doing his crusty supporting part. And Colm Meaney is meaner than we've ever seen him, in a single scene as the heroine's low-life father.
So far, so good. But about midway through, Duchess takes a turn for the more conventional and somewhat less enjoyable. What started as a quirky underworld romance morphs into a fairly straightforward revenge yarn. The flavorful characterizations of the first half are de-emphasized, in favor of over violently over-the-top action.
I'm okay with the violence, and with the revenge theme - but not so pleased about the predictability and occasional loose logic. It's still entertaining, with some nice set-piece moments - but not as fresh and original as the romance of the first half, nor as clever as we might expect from a director of Neil Marshall's accomplishments.
Nonetheless, I would definitely recommend Duchess to anyone who enjoys a wacky, ultra-violent crime send-up. It's an entertaining film, worth seeing if only for the off-beat performances.

Not a bad tough girl flick. Yes it has a lot of cliches and revenge scenarios but it's quite good. Lots and lots of gunplay action , fights a lot of gore and foul language, no full nudity but a few sexual situations are inferred. Power comes at a high price everyone knows that, and respect is earned at similar stakes. Duchess delivers a tidy serving of all the above. A rag tag pickpocket of a girl gets a raise up into international diamond trading through a handsome key element and is set on fire after many betrayals into a focused killer out for complete revenge and then a quick retirement plan to start her new life of freedom , but even this comes at a high price as one must be on top and watching your own back as you go. A good watch, May see this a few more times. Don't believe the bad reviews, it's a fun action flick. Enjoy.

Surely, no Oscar material, or a match to Guy Ritchi's Gentlemen, but this movie gave me a very entertaining two hours with a well told story, massive efforts from not very talented actors (but efforts go a long way) and a consistent use of practical effects.
Surprisingly, the few well-known names (Meany and Pertwee) deliver the films least memorable moments, but Colm Meany's worst is still on par with the lead actors' best. But the lead cast do try to "steal the show" from them. Kirk delivers a solid performance as lead and I do not felt that I ever dropped my attention or got bored of her as the lead.
Altogether, I enjoyed this move and I wouldn't mind seeing it again in a few months' time.

It's sad to think that a director like Marshall, who had such a stellar beginning with the horror cult classic "The Descent" is now stuck doing gun for hire, uninspired, action shlock like this.
Movies like this usually have their saving grace be the action scene choreography and cinematography. This dud doesn't even have that. The actions scenes are so boring, that nothing can save this.
The only thing this has going for it are Charlotte Kirk's looks and body. There's no doubt she's stunning from head to toe. But this movie saddles her with the lamest voice over narration, that even her appearances start to grate.

Don't normally write reviews for films but this was atrocious!
There was literally nothing good about it and the level of intellect in its creation was akin to something written in crayon!
It actually makes me pretty mad and sad that there is funding for something so rubbish when people are finding it hard in so many ways...
the casting is beyond terrible; not a believable person/character in the list!
The characters are just a joke; were they imagined up by some pre-pubescant boy who's never actually been outside??
The language and the costume were just laughable; literally nothing original or interesting about any of it and not even of any merit as a pastiche or homage to type of thing.
Seriously, we all thought covid was bad on the movie industry but this, this has done more damage to it for me after just suffering through a few minutes of it.
Sas, marines, mercenaries and mockneys! Hahahahahaha (but in a BAD way!)

Within 5 minutes of this starting i was about ready to turn of. It's just more of the same rubbish we've had many dozens of times since Guy Ritchie decided to give us 'Lock, Stock...'. Every single effort since that film has somehow managed to fall well short of it('Lock, Stock, wasn't a bad film, but it really wasn't great either).
All this film is, is around 1h50mins of some foul mouthed London bint roaming round swearing her head off alongside her male compatriots. She manages to swear far more than any of them, and that's really about as deep as this effort gets.
It's just a really poor film, badly acted, with an extremely lazy script.
These 'Lundin 'ard Man' films never convince. In all honesty, they're more funny than anything else, with the over use of expletives being crammed in for absolutely zero effect.

Rarely a movie is so bad that I'd call it annoying, but that's the case with "Duchess". It tells us the story of a female pocket thief who manages to steal a wallet and then tries to eliminate gangsters of an international diamond cartel, boldly ignoring that's 10 difficulty levels higher up.
The ridiculous story aside, the pseudo-cool style with its text inserts, off-screen narration, slow-downs and speed-ups is almost unwatchable and a poor imitation of people who poorly imitated Tarantino.
Funny thing is the final showdown was shot in a valley in Tenerife which I chose in 2015 for a photo session. A couple of years later, Neil Marshall decided to shoot the key scene of his movie in front of exactly the same rocks. "Duchess" may have bad taste in some respects, but not the location choice.
Anyhow, I love a lot stuff Neil Marshall shot in the past: "The Descent", "Doomsday", "Dog Soldiers", some "Game of Thrones" episodes when the series was still great. But "The Lair" and "The Reckoning" were only "meh" and now "Duchess" is the first serious disappointment.

This is the best combination between humor and action. The cast is very good and everything fits. It's not a complicated movie and that is what I love about it. Just sit and watch and have some fun. I really don't no why some people are saying there isn't enough action. Not every movie can be a John Wick movie. Sometimes you need some dialogue and some romance. The action is sometimes very hard but the humor and the coolness of the characters makes is bearable to watch it.
So in conclusion, for me this movie was a lot of fun, it was action, it was sexy, it was humor so from everything something. I hope that there will be a Duchess 2! For me this is a 10 out of 10.

This low budget, British action film has a very shaky start. The dialogue is silly. The camera work not great. However, this one takes a turn for the better along the way and becomes much better than it starts. It is a revenge film and it has decent action and fight choreography. The film is done very much in the style of Jesse V. Johnson and Scott Adkins' The Accident Man; however, it is not as good. It grew on me in a way many movies of this genre do not. The film also goes under the name Scarlett, which confused me a little when trying to find it. The cast is pretty good in this on, especially, the ancillary characters.

This film appeared to be the typical revenge thriller type film starring a female in the leading role. It uses the same cliches and tropes we have seen before. The lead actress is a solid enough actress for the role but at times her accent was extremely distracting and difficult to fully understand in dialogue. The story isn't anything special where we see the predictable betrayal by her boyfriend's friends on him and in the end, our lead duchess and her team fend off the villains getting her revenge. It has the feel of a Quentin Tarantino film in its style as well as a Guy Ritchie film but of course isn't on the level of those directors films.

... but it will mostly keep you engaged.
The story is derivative. A young hot small time female pick pocket ends up under the tutelage and under the sheets of a high end diamond smuggler.
It morphs into a revenge flick notable for its creative violence.
Veteran character actors Sean Pertwee, Colm Meaney, Stephanie Beacham add enough acting weight to the proceedings to make up for the lesser known actors.
My biggest complaint was the accent of the main character which might be hard for North Americans to figure out. I lived in England for several years, but I still felt like Jason Statham trying to make sense of Brad Pitt's Pikey in Snatch.

I just finished watching Duchess on Prime - a lower-budget action flick that walks the perfect line between pulp fiction and camp. It delivers gritty revenge with just enough over-the-top flair, treating its story with the same seriousness a big-budget action flick would, even when the budget says otherwise. It's pure pulp in tone - tough, fast, and stylized - but with a campy charm that makes its earnestness unexpectedly endearing.
If you didn't see this in the early minutes, you should have turned it off and spared the time to write a review showing your misunderstanding of this genre. And certainly stay away from any Scott Adkins movies...
