The film was to be released on October 10, 2025 which would've marked the 20th anniversary of the original Avatar: A Lenda de Aang (2005) television series as well as the 15th anniversary of the first and only live action film O Último Mestre do Ar (2010). However, it was pushed to January 20, 2026 after being revealed at CinemaCon.
The original writer and director from the Avatar: The Last Airbender series are making this film, which is stated to be the first in a trilogy.
This will be the second theatrical feature film based on the Avatar: A Lenda de Aang (2005) television series ever since O Último Mestre do Ar (2010) as well as the first one to be an animated movie and not be shown in live action.
The word "avatar" is not used in the film's title to avoid comparisons with James Cameron's science fiction franchise of the same name.
Like her character, Dionne Quan is also blind in real life.
