Mumbai, March 11: The new horror comedy Roohi is the first film in the genre that Alexx O'Nell has tried, but the Bollywood actor of American origin says he is familiar with the art of making people laugh through acting.

Alexx, who hails from Connecticut, plays Tim, an American filmmaker, who arrives at a tiny village in rural India to do a story on a very unique small-town tradition.

New Delhi, Nov 4 (Ians) Actor Vijay Varma has been around in the industry for over eight years but he became a household name only last year, after Gully Boy. He says he is content now, as he found the recognition he was craving for.

Vijay made his acting debut in 2012 with "Chittagong". He was then seen in films like "Rangrezz", "Monsoon Shootout", "Raag Desh" and "Manto". It was only in 2019 that he found fame, after he featured in the Ranveer Singh-starrer "Gully Boy".

"I think I got content as soon as I found the recognition that I was so craving for, which I feel I was rightfully deserving. It's been nice," Vijay told Ians.

He has evolved as a person too, with time.

"Over the years I have evolved as a person and I figured out I cannot be at unrest all the time. Now it is a lot easier.

The Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles has announced the juries and additional programming for the upcoming 14th edition, which runs April 6-10 in Hollywood.

Three films have been added to the line-up on April 10, including Lena Khan’s feature debut The Tiger Hunter, and a community screening of Sami Khan’s Khoya.

A restored version of Sujata, provided by the National Film Archive Of India, will screen as a tribute to director Bimal Roy on the 50th anniversary of his death.

Apart from being a world class filmmaker, Anurag Kashyap has supported a few films as a presenter, latest being the write-actor turned director-producer Zeishan Quadri’s upcoming film Meeruthiya Gangsters. Not only that Anurag has edited the film as well.

Zeishan had written Gangs Of Wasseypur (Gow), assisted Anurag on it and then acted in the same film where he played the popular character “Definite”.

When asked, Anurag informed that when he was invited by Zeishan to see the first cut of the film, he “kind of made an excuse because he was scared that he might not like it”.

“Then Vasan Bala (director of 2012 film, Peddlers) called me up, and said that he was blown by it. I saw it, and was not just surprised, but completely taken in. Vasan and I then sat with him, and gave him feedback. The film is funny, edgy, and contemporary,” added Anurag.

Kolkata, Jan 11: Bedabrata Pain, who won the National Film Award for his maiden venture "Chittagong", Saturday said he is in talks to direct a remake of the 1983 cult hit "Masoom" and claimed it will be different, he claimed.

"I want to do it but it has not to be the remake of the 1983 movie. I am in discussion with the producers. I want to direct a movie based on the 'Man, Woman and Child' but the man has changed, the woman has changed and the child has changed..it has to be a different take on the story," Pain told Ians on the sidelines of the Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival 2014 here.

Chennai, Nov 13: With successful commercial films such as "Love, Sex Aur Dhoka" (LSD) and "Kai Po Che!" to his credit, Bollywood actor Raj Kumar says he would like to strike a balance between commercial and independent cinema.

"I would like to do all kinds of films. I have already done quite a few successful commercial films like 'Ragini Mms' and I have also done independent films. In future, I would like to continue doing both commercial and independent films," Raj Kumar told Ians.

Shonali Bose’s feature film Margarita, with a Straw that won her the Sundance Institute– Mahindra Global Filmmaking Award 2012 has completed principal photography. The film was shot in India in March and in New York in June 2013.

The film features Kalki Koechlin (Shanghai, That Girl in Yellow Boots), Revathy (Thevar Magan, Dhoop, Marupadiyam) and William Moseley who played Peter Pevensie in the film series The Chronicles of Narnia.

Produced by Bose’s production company Ishan Talkies and Viacom 18, the film is still in need of finishing funds. It is expected to be ready by October this year.

The film revolves around Laila (Koechlin) who falls repeatedly in love, yearns to have sex and wants to be a Bollywood lyricist.

Mumbai, May 2: Actor Vijay Varma, seen in films like "Rangrezz" and "Chittagong", says he might share screen space with actress Priyanka Chopra's cousin Meera in "Gang Of Ghosts". She is making her Bollywood debut with the movie.

"I am not allowed to speak much about my film. Well, looks like I will be sharing the screen space with Meera, who is debuting (in Bollywood) with 'Gang of Ghosts'," Vijay told Ians.

The actor will join the movie's crew May 6.

"We will be shooting in Surat. So let's see what's in store for us," he added.

New Delhi, March 18: The song "Bolo na", which has been named for two National awards Monday, had the calibre to win such an honour, says Shankar Mahadevan, who has won the best playback singer (male) for the number.

New Delhi, March 5: Director Bedaprata Pain's critically acclaimed film "Chittagong" has won the Audience Choice Awards 2013 at the Sedona International Film Festival.

The festival, which took place at Sedona in the Us, declared a tie between "Chittagong" and Hollywood movie "Least Among Saints" for the award.

"Chittagong", which talks about life of 14-year-old boy Jhunku in times of the 1930s Chittagong Uprising, had also won an award at the 2012 Radio Mirchi Music Award for its song "Bolo na".

The Manoj Bajpayee-starrer will also be screened at the ongoing Cinequest Film Festival March 7 and March 9, where Pain.

That 2012 began with an overwrought hyper-melodramatic brutal and tumultuous remake of Agneepath and ended with Yash Chopra’s muted mellow all-heart-no-malice ode to romance Jab Tak Hai Jaan seems indicative of the direction that Bollywood seems headed for. Miriam Chandy Menacherry’s The Rat Race won the award for best documentary, Vikram Dasgupta’s Calcutta Taxi was awarded the best short and Bedabrata Pain’s feature Chittagong bagged two awards- The Jury Award and the Piaggio Foundation Award at the 12th River to River Indian Film Festival in Florence, Italy.

The Rat Race is based on the night lives of Mumbai municipal corporation’s rat killing department. The film was screened at the 14th Mumbai International Film Festival.

Debutant Vikram Dasgupta’s Calcutta Taxi, a Canada – India co-production, is set in the backdrop of the political crisis of Calcutta. The film revolves around three lives that coincide and affect each other in a way that each one gains and loses something. The film will compete in the 35th International Short Film Festival of Clermont-Ferrand.

In it’s 12th year, all eyes are on Florence, Italy, for Bollywood and Indian cinema lovers, as the River to River festival opened with a big bang. Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur I will open the 12th edition of the River to River Florence Indian Film Festival, while its sequel Gangs of Wasseypur II will be the closing film of the festival. A documentary on the life and career of Amitabh Bachchan, Everlasting Light by Ram Madhvani, will be screened during the festival. Bachchan will also be present for a Q&A session post the screening of his film Black.

Besides film screening, the festival will also host interactive sessions on topics like, ‘Shakti: Women in Indian cinema and literature’ and ‘Bollywood and the expression of emotions in today’s India’.

The festival will run from 7th to 13th December in Florence followed by an edition in Rome from 14th to 16th December 2012.

Opening today is Bedabrata Pain’s take on the Chittagong uprising in 1930. The director brought together a cast of incredible actors for Chittagong including Manoj Bajpayee, and Nawazuddin Siddique to tell this incredible tale.

Talking about the story of the film Manoj Bajpayee told us, “I am playing a revolutionary from the 1930 movement which happened in Chittagong. His name is Surya Sen, who was fondly called Masterda. He is the teacher that led the movement that comprised of all the children who looked up to him.”

Gangs Of Wasseypur's powerhouse performer Nawazuddin Siddiqui injured himself on Tuesday night, right after a screening of his latest release Chittagong in Delhi attended by the likes of Sheila Dixit.

A shocked member of the Chittagong team informed this writer, "Nawazuddin slipped and fell outside the theatre after the premiere. He has injured his leg badly and was in no position to travel or to shoot the next day."

Apparently, Ketan Mehta's film starring Nawazuddin which was supposed to start shooting later this week had to be postponed.

When contacted Nawazuddin tried to downplay his injury. "It's nothing that major. Yes, I've suffered a knee injury. It was a rather unfortunate end to a glorious evening. Mumbai, Sep 28: Actor Manoj Bajpayee has revealed that he liked the script of Anurag Kashyap's "Chittagong" so much that he did it for free.

"The script is excellent. When I read the script, I decided that I would do it even for free and this is actually what I have done," Manoj, 43, said here Thursday at the music launch of the film.

"It is a hard-hitting film that tells the story of our country. It won't let the viewers lose.

Mumbai, Sep 27: Director-producer Anurag Kashyap, known for his cult films, is happy producing Manoj Bajpai's "Chittagong" and said the film will finally come out towards the middle of the next month.

"This film is finally coming out and will see the light of the day. I know how this film was made and how it was put together. In fact, I got the star cast of 'Gangs of Wasseypur' through this film. Manoj.

After his outstanding performance in the recent hit Gangs Of Wasseypur, Jaideep Ahlawat has bagged a role in Vipul Shah's next Commando directed by ad maker Dilip Ghosh.

Jaideep will be seen playing a villain in the film, which will mark the debut of Miss India Pooja Chopra. Vidyut Jamwal of Force fame plays the lead hero in Commando.

Jaideep got his first break in Priyadarshan's Khatta Meetha in which he played a villainous role. When contacted Jaideep on bagging the villain's role yet again, he said, "I am new in this industry. It's just been three years. It's not about getting a villain's role. It is about getting a role which audience will appreciate." The shoot of the film has commenced in Patiala.

Chittagong will be Jaideep's next release which comes out on October 12.

The 12th Annual New York Indian Film Festival (Nyiff), presented by the Indo-American Arts Council announced the nominations for various categories of awards.

The festival will be held from May 23 to 27 at the Tribeca Cinemas in Lower Manhattan.

Nyiff will more than 50 features, documentaries, and short films over a span of five days.

Anyone who follows my writing here on the site, and particularly my reviews, knows that I'm a huge history geek. I'm easily swayed by a good historical drama, and the first to stab a bad one in the eye. Bedabrata Pain's debut feature, Chittagong, is right in my wheelhouse in that sense. The film's depiction of the Chittagong revolt against the British in the early '30s paints a vivid picture of the kernels of rebellion and the politics and posturing that accompanies any such act of anti-imperialist revolt. The 12th annual New York Indian Film Festival is nearly here, and they've got some great events and films to share. The festival begins on Wednesday, May 23rd and runs through May 27th. Rituparno Ghosh in Chitrangada

Rituparno Ghosh’s latest film Chitrangada will premiere at the 12th annual New York Indian Film Festival (Nyiff) which will run from May 23 to 27 at Tribeca Cinemas in Lower Manhattan.

In Chitrangada, to be screened as the Centerpiece film of the festival, director Rituparno Ghosh faces the camera again in the role of a choreographer who plans to stage the dance drama ‘Chitrangada’ on the occasion of Rabindranath Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary.

The festival will close with Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur which will have its World Premiere in Directors’ Fortnight at the 65th Cannes Film Festival.

The festival announced earlier that it will open with Bedabrata Pain’s Chittagong.

Another highlight of the festival will be the screening of Oscar-winning documentary Saving Face from Pakistan.

The festival is presented by the Indo-American Arts Council.

Bedabrata Pain’s Chittagong will open the 12th edition of the New York Indian Film Festival.

Set in the turbulence of the 1930s British India, Chittagong is a true story of a 14-year-old boy, Jhunku, and of his journey to find where he belongs.

The Centerpiece Film Hum Dono Rangeen will pay tribute to Dev Anand.

As the Sidebar, the festival will hold a Retrospective of Shyam Benegal followed by a post-screening discussion with the director. Three of Benegal’s films which were penned by journalist Khalid Mohamed will be screened: Mamoo (1994), Sardari Begum (1996), and Zubeidaa (2001).

After a stellar performance as the haughty Intelligence Bureau officer Khan in Kahaani, a record six films of actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui were screened at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles 2012 including the opening film (Chittagong) and closing film (Patang). Think of any anticipated film of 2012, and he is there. He is being proclaimed as the actor of the year. Is the growth of this actor all too sudden? Or did we not notice him before?
