‘Kimi ni Todoke’ vs ‘Blue Box’: How Modern Shojo Fixes the Trivial Methods of Classic Shojo’s Narrative
Image
If you’ve been watching anime for a while, you completely understand the shojo formula: shy girl meets her ideal guy, there’s a school festival going on, which may involve a misunderstanding or two, and then there’s a grand confession amid fireworks or falling snow, and voila, “a happy ending”.

Whether it’s Kimi ni Todoke, Kaichou wa Maid-sama!, these shows have a certain tone to them. They’re warm, cute, and follow a script: festival → misunderstanding → confession → dating → credits roll. And hey, no hard feelings; we truly loved them. But eventually, it kinda feels like you’re seeing the same love story over with different character designs.

You Know ‘Kimi Ni Todoke’ Has No Competition When Fans Like a Side Character More Than the Male Lead Without Any Discourse
Image
It is not uncommon for anime and manga fans to fall in love with a side character and make him more popular than the main protagonist. However, oftentimes this results in the main protagonist getting overshadowed and thus hurting his character in the series. One of the few anime series that managed to perfect it was Kimi ni Todoke by Karuho Shiina.

Kimi ni Todoke is one of the most underrated names in the Shoujo genre, following the themes of romance, comedy, and slice-of-life. It is a coming-of-age story that follows the adventure of Sawako Kuronuma and her struggles as a high school girl with a scary face as she yearns to find friends and also a love interest in Shouta Kazehaya, the male protagonist of the story.

Crunchyroll Is Kickstarting 2025 With One Anime's Most-Anticipated Romances
Image
Sometimes, romance anime enthusiasts just want a conventional story that focuses on two people falling in love with no prominent distractions, third wheels, or gimmicks, where the audience only really knows how one of them feels and hopes the other likes them in return. There can be strong hints of reciprocity, but nothing outright to eliminate doubt. Unfortunately, the start of Crunchyroll's 2025 winter season didn't have much to offer fans looking for this kind of straightforward romance, with the first two weeks debuting series that either didn't put enough emphasis on any actual romance or relied too much on these aforementioned distractions.

But then out of nowhere came Honey Lemon Soda. It now stands out from the other romance anime currently airing, as made apparent through an opening scene that identifies the story's two love interests with no unnecessary gimmicks. Luckily, the rest of its debut episode easily follows...

Top Slice-Of-Life Anime
Image
There is something incredible about watching small, seemingly mundane moments from everyday life portrayed on the screen. With the recent trend of romanticizing one's life dominating social media discussions, slice-of-life anime's popularity is coming back. The best slice-of-life anime series and movies teach meaningful lessons to the audience, like in A Silent Voice and Kimi Ni Todoke.

Unlike sci-fi or action series, slice-of-life anime feel much more down-to-earth and relatable since the characters deal with the same things as the audience. Slice-of-life anime invites viewers to live in the present, enjoy simple pleasures, and form meaningful connections with other people. Slice-of-life anime is often blended with comedy, romance, and, occasionally, magic.

Updated on January 11, 2025, by Natasha Elder: Slice-of-life anime often offers a nice respite from daily life's stresses while offering engaging plot lines and intriguing drama. Anime like Aria: The Animation and Silver Spoon have viewers encouraging protagonists along their life's journey.

Let's Face It: One of Anime's Best Romances Needs a Reboot And Needs It Fast
Image
Yona of the Dawn may not hail from the ’90s, but with nearly a decade since its release and the story left incomplete, a reboot feels overdue. Unlike other romance anime that might need a reboot to fix lackluster animation or poor adaptation choices, Yona of the Dawn doesn’t suffer from these pitfalls. Instead, it stands as a prime candidate for revitalizing the romance-adventure genre, offering a refreshing alternative to predictable plotlines and clichéd twists.

Much like Kimi ni Todoke, which recently returned to great fanfare, Yona of the Dawn could capture a new generation of viewers while reigniting its devoted fanbase. With its rich world-building, compelling characters, and a plot that balances romance and adventure, a reboot has the potential to redefine how anime tackles these genres. Fans have long expressed their desire to see Yona’s journey continue, especially with so much of the manga left untouched.

Ranma 1/2 Is a Classic, And Its Reboot Proves Akane x Ranma Is Best Modern Anime Couple
Image
Ranma 1/2, a reboot of a classic series from the 2024 Fall anime line-up, highlights the timeless charm of classic anime. While modern romance anime explore diverse narratives—spanning high school romances, university flings, office love stories, villainess redemption arcs, and more—audiences might feel overwhelmed by the influx of titles like A Sign of Affection, Kimi ni Todoke Season 2, Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian, and 7th Time Loop. Despite this, Ranma 1/2 reintroduces a refreshing, innocent romance that blossoms from the quirks of everyday life.

The story revolves around Ranma Saotome, who transforms into a girl when splashed with cold water, and Akane Tendo, his hot-headed fiancée. Their journey balances humor and heartfelt moments, proving that Akane and Ranma's dynamic relationship isn’t just nostalgic. It’s the perfect blend of modernity and classic storytelling, making them one of anime’s most enduring couples today.

Modern Anime Miss Out a Big Part of What Made Classic Romance Like Nana and Fruits Basket So Charming
Image
The debate between modern and classic romance anime has been ongoing for decades. While classic anime offers a nostalgic hit, modern anime offers better animation and a less problematic plot. However, series like Nana, Fruits Basket, and Ouran High School Host Club can never be replaced by modern anime, and there’s a good reason for it.

From the lack of originality to less development in the series, the problems that modern anime face are endless. While some series manage to shine, others fall into the black hole of cliched plots and characters.

Modern anime lacks the originality of classic romance series Nana | Credits: Studio Madhouse

Since classic anime came first, there was way more scope for exploration. They had the edge of being the trendsetters during their time, something that classic series took full advantage of. While modern anime can offer better visuals and animation, the plot can feel cliched at times.

Sometimes an anime can just be a few characters that you want to spend time with. It can be something simple and nice. “My Clueless First Friend”, based on the manga by Taku Kawamura, is exactly that; just passing time and having fun.

New Shojo Anime Just as Good as the Classics
Image
Shojo anime had a spike in popularity in the 2000s with the release of classic series such as Maid Sama!, Ouran High School Host Club, and the original Fruits Basket. In recent years, however, there has been a noticeable lack of shojo in the anime landscape. With almost all of the currently popular anime hits being shonen series, it can be hard to find the little shojo out there or know if it's worth watching.

Despite this, new shojo series are still being released, albeit at a relatively slow pace in comparison. Many of these series draw from the legacy of their predecessors, giving audiences the same feelings that shojo classics of the past evoked. As old favorites get picked up by studios once again to continue their stories and new series shake up the formula in interesting ways, there is hope for a resurgence in the shojo genre in the modern day.

Anime Reboots Are on the Rise, so Give Ouran Host Club a Comeback Already
Image
Anime reboots have become a growing trend that gives life to classic and beloved series. From Fruits Basket to the arrival of Kimi ni Todoke, these shows have set a precedent for returning to anime that has resonated deeply with fans. The success of these reboots isnt just about nostalgia but rather about giving older, adored series a chance to fully explore their source material and storylines with modern animation techniques.

Yet, despite the resurgence of other anime, one fan-favorite shojo anime is noticeably (and tragically) absent from the reboot roster. Ouran High School Host Club has long since been a cultural phenomenon that captured viewers hearts with its humor, heartfelt scenes, and clever, ahead-of-its-time satire of gender roles. While the 2006 anime adaption is still widely popular, it only scratches the surface of the mangas full potential, leaving Ouran as a prime candidate for a reboot worthy of its timeless excellence.

Dazai's Ability "No Longer Human" complements Chuuya's "For the Tainted Sorrow," making them a formidable duo. Despite their constant bickering, Dazai and Chuuya share a strong bond, trusting each other with their lives in dire situations.

Bungo Stray Dogs has gained a considerable following since its release in 2016, and its not hard to see why. The internet loves to make fun of it, but the dreamed is truly one of the best brain-dead shows to watch when it’s too hot to do much of anything else. Lily Collins wears the most amazing outfits! There’s lots of kissing! Why do you think you’re better than it?! Much like other recent Netflix hits such as “Bridgerton,” “Emily in Paris” Season 4 will be divided into two parts, with Part 1 dropping August 15 and Part 2 debuting a month later.
