After taking the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival in May, Iranian auteur Jafar Panahi's revenge thriller It Was Just an Accident is set for a U.S. release on Oct. 15. Neon is distributing the film and released a new trailer that plays up its raft of strong reviews as well as its tense plot, which depicts the fallout of a traffic accident that spirals out of control.
Filmed in secret and without a permit in Panahi's native land, It Was Just an Accident stars Ebrahim Azizi as Eghbal, the driver in the aforementioned accident. During a nighttime drive with his wife and daughter, he's involved in a hit-and-run with a stray dog that forces him to take a detour to nearby garage. There he encounters another man, Vahid (Vahid Mobasseri), who comes to suspect that Eghbal is the responsible party for the traumatic abuse he experienced during a stint in prison.

The fall movie season, these days, technically begins at Cannes, the new launchpad for Academy Awards contenders and the international arthouse fare that dominates the conversation into the year. That’s where “Anora” began its journey en route to the Oscars last year. Same for “The Zone of Interest” and “Anatomy of a Fall” the year before. In other words, the time of year typically reserved for its best movies isn’t always its first stop.
Hot off a return-to-form quintessential movie summer thanks to a stacked lineup of blockbusters from “Jurassic World: Rebirth” to “Superman,” this fall will usher in hundreds more releases vying for eyeballs and awards. We’ve narrowed our list down to 54. Major themes this fall include the rise of beloved auteurs making a comeback, as well as just how much international is here to stay.

Nouvelle Vague, Richard Linklater’s loving homage to Jean Luc-Godard’s 1960 film Breathless and the French New Wave, which received a 10-minute standing ovation and rave reviews following its world premiere at May’s Cannes Film Festival, will be released in American theaters on Oct. 31 and play on big screens for two weeks before dropping on Netflix on Nov. 14, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
When Netflix acquired Nouvelle Vague’s U.S. rights shortly after Cannes, some reacted with surprise and dismay that a movie shot on film and about cinema would end up with a streamer. But the company is planning a robust theatrical release that will include not only screens in New York (where, appropriately enough, it owns the historic Paris Theater) and LA, but in all of the top 10 U.S. markets.
Additionally, THR can report that the largely French-language film will be pushed across all categories.

The Korean film, Fragment, tells a shocking story about a murder. But there’s a twist like no other. The protagonists of this film aren’t directly involved in the murder at all. They’re the children of the murderer and the victim. It is truly astounding how thriller movies have made us so unhinged in that we’re always eager to learn about the whos, whats, and wheres of a mystery, never truly seeing beyond a crime. Of course, it’s the ones who’ve been left behind that truly deserve all our attention. Are the kids of a murderer violent enough to become criminals themselves? What does the grief of losing everyone dear to you make you? Monster or angel? What are the effects of such a crime on young minds? These are the many questions that the Korean thriller-drama Fragment is asking.
The premise of Fragment is deeply riveting,...

Ryan Gosling is blasting off into space in next year’s “Project Hail Mary,” but first he made a stop at San Diego Comic Con on Saturday.
Gosling joined a packed Hall H panel alongside directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, writer Drew Goddard and author Andy Weir, who wrote the original book. Gosling plays astronaut Ryland Grace who “awakens on a spacecraft with no memory of himself or his mission. He slowly deduces he is the sole survivor of a crew sent to the Tau Ceti solar system in search of a solution to a catastrophic event on Earth. In his search for answers, Grace must rely on his vast array of scientific knowledge, sheer ingenuity and human will — but he may not have to search alone.”

Project Hail Mary star Ryan Gosling had Hall H in stitches Saturday afternoon at Comic-Con 2025.
In addition to Gosling, author Andy Weir and screenwriter Drew Goddard were on today’s dais with Lord and Miller in conversation with Joshua Horowitz. When asked about the efforts for scientific accuracy in the film Lord and Miller described exact velocity to set-building. Later on in the panel, they jokingly teased that no amount of discomfort was too far for Gosling, whether he needed to hang from wires or be smothered in Vaseline.
“I was sent the manuscript from the greatest scientific mind of our time. And he’s sitting right next to me! No pressure,” Gosling said of Weir. “I knew it would be brilliant because it’s Andy, but nothing could prepare me for what he’d come up with this time. It showed me things I had never seen. It was...

Three-time Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling stars as a middle school science teacher who can’t even moonwalk but is now expected to spacewalk and save Earth in Project Hail Mary. He’s reluctantly recruited for a mission that has almost zero chance of succeeding, hence the title. And in the final moments of the trailer, it seems our hero learns earthlings aren’t alone in this universe.
Oscar nominee Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Emmy nominee Lionel Boyce (The Bear), Ken Leung (Industry), and Milana Vayntrub (Die Hart) also star.
“Science teacher Ryland Grace (Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light-years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out,” reads Amazon MGM Studios’ synopsis. “He must call on his scientific...

What if you took the "Science the s*** out of this" energy from "The Martian," added a dose of "Arrival," and swapped out the professionalism of Mark Watney for something closer to the buddy comedy hijinks of "Lethal Weapon" ... but in space? The results would be something close to the story of "Project Hail Mary," the latest adaptation of an Andy Weir novel. Starring Ryan Gosling as our newest astronaut completely in over his head, the story follows Ryland Grace as our main protagonist stranded in space with absolutely no memory of how that actually happened. The book remains one of my favorite reading experiences in recent memory, precisely because it plays out by throwing us into the deep end and slowly unspooling the circumstances surrounding these life-or-death stakes over the course of several chapters.
The movie, by directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and written by Drew Goddard, takes a slightly different tact.

Ryan Gosling is heading back to space, and this time it’s for Project Hail Mary, a new sci-fi movie based on the hit book by Andy Weir, the same guy who wrote The Martian. The trailer for the film just dropped, and fans are already buzzing about it. The movie is set to come out in theaters on March 20, 2026.
In the movie, Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship. He has no idea who he is or why he’s there at first, but bit by bit, he starts to remember.
Turns out, he’s the only one left on a super important mission to figure out what’s making the sun slowly die. If he fails, Earth could go extinct.

The sci-fi epic has been set for release on March 20, 2026, with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Into and Across the Spider-Verse) directing a script written by Drew Goddard. Ryan Gosling is heading to space in the first trailer for “Project Hail Mary.”
The comedic sci-fi film from Amazon MGM Studios follows Gosling, whose character makes a leap from unassuming teacher to an astronaut assigned to a risky space mission. The “Barbie” star appears opposite Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), who convinces Gosling’s character to launch himself into space to save humanity.
“It’s an insanely ambitious story that’s massive in scope, and it seemed really hard to make, and that’s kind of our bag,” Gosling said about the film at CinemaCon. “This is why we go to the movies. And I’m not just saying it because I’m in it. I’m also saying it because I’m a producer on the film.”
Based on the Andy Weir novel of the same name, the film was directed by “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

When we think of the essential checklists of must-see movies, film buffs tend to gravitate towards Sight & Sound or my personal favorite, They Shoot Pictures, Don’t They?’s list of the 1,000 greatest films. And while they do give just about the most well-rounded syllabus for those interested in the history of cinema, they tend to lean a bit older. While that’s good and well and necessary for a comprehensive appreciation, some might want something more modern. But instead of the widely skewed IMDb list, we now have a new one: The New York Times list of The 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century.
Coming in at #1 on the list of best movies of the 21st century was Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite, which won the Palme d’Or and also the Best Picture Oscar, becoming the first foreign language film to do so. In at #2 was David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive,...

This is no accident … you’ll soon be able to see 2025 Palme d’Or winner “It Was Just an Accident” in theaters on Oct. 15.
Neon picked up Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi’s latest movie — “یک تصادف ساده,” — out of the Cannes Film Festival last month, marking their sixth consecutive acquisition of the French event’s top film.
“Inspired by Panahi’s second Iranian incarceration, ‘It Was Just an Accident’ follows what begins as a minor accident as it sets in motion a series of escalating consequences,” according to Neon’s Wednesday press release.
Panahi spent almost 20 years in prison or under house arrest in Iran for making films that the country deemed to be anti-government propaganda. After winning the Caméra d’Or in 1995 for “The White Balloon,” the director was able to attend Cannes this year despite a 20-year ban on making movies in 2010 and an additional prison sentence in...

Netflix is no stranger to producing great thrillers, and it seems like the streamer might have another big hit on its hands later this summer when Hostage makes its premiere in August. Created by Matt Charman (Bridge of Spies), the five-episode limited series stars award-winning actresses Suranne Jones (Gentleman Jack) and Julie Delpy (Before Sunrise) as two heads of state, and sounds like it could be ripped from today's headlines.
Premiering on August 21, Hostage features Jones as British prime minister Abigail Dalton, and Delpy as French president Vivienne Toussaint. Jones also serves as an executive producer on the project, which promises to deliver a political thriller that will have viewers on the edge of their seats. The premise may seem a bit familiar given recent hits like Prime Video's G20 and Netflix's Zero Day, but it still sounds like it's going to be a worthy addition to the genre:

‘Her Will Be Done’ Review: Superstition Meets Smalltown Bigotry in a Grimily Atmospheric Psychodrama
For a long time in the popular cinematic imagination, the French countryside was a golden place, of haybales, wildflowers and uncannily beautiful goatherdesses. More recently, mainly thanks to the darker sensibilities of Bruno Dumont and Alain Guiraudie, it has become the dank breeding ground for peculiar stories of rural spite and small-town perversity. This is the new tradition to which Julia Kowalski’s “Her Will Be Done” belongs — not least because it features two Guiraudie familiars in “Misericordia”‘s Jean-Baptiste Durand and “Standing Vertical”‘s Raphaël Thiéry. And though it promises more than it ultimately delivers, mostly Kowalski’s sophomore title is a solid addition to the subgenre, developing into an intriguing mix of heady and earthy, in which folk-horror eeriness fuses with provincial narrow-mindedness, and mysticism oozes through the muck.
The opening moments cement its tonal dissonance as, with a twang of Daniel Kowalski’s spare, uneasy score, a brief prologue with fire,...

Olivia Cooke has cemented herself as one of the most magnetic performers on HBO's House of the Dragon, and will now apply those talents to Chloe Okuno's latest thriller, Brides. The project will be distributed by Neon, which has recently garnered acclaim for its film Anora.
Per Deadline, Cooke will be replacing horror veteran Maika Monroe, who has appeared in films like It Follows and Okuno's breakout film, Watcher. Monroe was forced to step down from the role due to scheduling conflicts with her Universal film Reminders of Him– adapted from It Ends With Us author Colleen Hoover's novel of the same name. The film follows "Sally Bishop (Cooke) and her husband, who travel to a remote Italian villa whose owner, a mysterious count, takes a peculiar interest in Sally."

Agathe (Camille Rutherford), the charming protagonist of Laura Piani’s pleasant romantic comedy Jane Austen Wrecked My Life, dreams of being a writer. A bookseller in Paris, she spends her days roaming the stacks and absorbing the words of literary greats. But like many aspiring authors shy about their talent, Agathe only scribbles in her spare time and refuses to let anyone read her work. When her best friend and colleague Felix (Pablo Pauly) discovers one of her drafts, he submits an application to a prestigious writing residency established in Austen’s name on Agathe’s behalf. Once she’s accepted, her decision to attend changes her life.
With ample charm, Piani fashions a film that is both an ode to the 19th century literary figure and a love letter to writing. Jane Austen Wrecked My Life doesn’t reinvent the rules of the rom-com, but it does find ways...

The general consensus surrounding the 2025 Cannes Film Festival was that the lineup this year proved to be surprisingly muted; with no shortage of exciting names both in front of and behind the camera, the pervading disappointment that began with the premiere of the bloated and repetitive “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” echoed throughout an edition that never quite caught fire, despite the caliber of talent consistently making its way along the Croisette. In any case, no year in Cannes is ever outright bad, and 2025 still saw its share of exciting features that will no doubt come to dominate movie discourse for the rest of the year and beyond.
In compiling a list of 10 movies from the Cannes festival 2025 to keep your eye on, there are a few titles that just barely miss out on the proceedings. Honorable mentions should therefore go to films like Joachim Trier’s competition standout “Sentimental Value,...

Even in supposedly enlightened societies it is practically an article of faith that a woman’s identity as a mother must supercede all her other identities. Not only that: any woman not willing to sacrifice all the other love in her life for the love of her child is unnatural, an aberration and the ultimate taboo: a bad mother. Anna Cazenave Cambet’s sweeping, moving “Love Me Tender,” based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Constance Debré, aims at the heart of this pervasive ideology of hypocrisy and unreachably high expectations, and largely thanks to a rivetingly radiant Vicky Krieps, hits its mark with painful accuracy. The paths to what is socially deemed success as a mother are few and narrow and heavily policed, but there are a million ways to fail.

Still from "Sentimental Value"
Herewith a list of all the films that won prizes at Cannes. Some of these will come to the US this year. Others will surely be held until 2026 (the whims and vagaries and troubles of distribution). A select few will probably compete for attention at the Oscars in one category (Best International Feature Film) or another (what's this year's Anatomy of a Fall?)

For many years most in the industry have looked to the fall festival trifecta of Venice, Telluride and Toronto as the real start of Oscar season, but recently, with two Palme d’Or winners going on to also be Best Picture winners, the “start” of the season has to be redefined. It really now starts at Cannes.
For example, in 2024 the Cannes Film Festival selections and winners scored very big at the Oscars, with Palme d’Or winner Anora becoming only the third film to also win the Best Picture Academy Award (after 1955’s Marty and 2019’s Parasite). Emilia Perez, The Substance and the animation feature winner Flow also saw big success out of Cannes at the Oscars, where the festival’s films scored an overall whopping 31 nominations. In fact the track record has been pretty good, not at all a detriment for its early positioning, in the past seven...

As Iranian director Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just An Accident was declared winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or on Saturday evening, one of the first questions from the Deadline team was: “Could it go to the Oscars?”.
It’s an obvious question given the Oscar track record of recent Palme d’Or winners Anora, Anatomy of a Fall and Parasite.
However, it is unlikely that Iran’s Islamic Republic government will allow Panahi’s film to be put forward as the country’s Best International Feature Film submission for the 2026 Oscars.
Aside from Panahi’s outspoken stance against its stranglehold on democracy which has twice landed him in prison, the film is highly critical of Iran’s penal system on the back of the director’s own firsthand experiences.

Cannes 2025: Why Oscars could be next for Palme d’Or winner Jafar Panahi’s ‘It Was Just an Accident’
The 2025 Cannes Film Festival concluded on Saturday following two weeks packed with screenings, stars, press, and parties. With the prizes having been handed out for the festival’s 78th anniversary, awards pundits can now start looking at what contenders might be in the best spot to get into the upcoming Oscar race.
This year's prestigious Palme d’Or was awarded to It Was Just an Accident from the long-persecuted Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi. The revenge story centers on five former prisoners who believe they’ve identified and found the person responsible for torturing them. It’s Panahi’s first project since his ban on making films was lifted by the country’s religious leaders who had imprisoned him for “propaganda against the Islamic Republic.” It marks the second Iranian film to win Cannes' top honor after Taste of Cherry (tied with The Eel from Japan) in 1997 from Abbas Kiarostami, whom...

Call them a barometer, clairvoyant, or just god damn shrewd when it comes to choosing award-winning movies, but Neon has just scored its sixth Cannes Palme d’Or in a row with It Was Just an Accident.
Deadline’s Andreas Wiseman first reported two days ago that Neon scooped up North American rights to the movie.
This comes after last year’s Cannes top prize winner Anora, Justine Triet’s 2023 title Anatomy of a Fall, 2022’s Triangle of Sadness, 2021’s Titane and 2019’s Parasite. Out of that bunch, Anora and Parasite went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars, which is whole other level of award campaigning genius on behalf of the Tom Quinn run distribution label.

Iranian director Jafar Panahi’s triumphant return to the Cannes Film Festival, “It Was Just an Accident,” has won the Palme d’Or as the best film in competition at the festival, the Cannes jury announced on Saturday evening.
Panahi, who spent almost 20 years in prison or under house arrest in Iran for making anti-government films, was allowed to leave the country and go to the festival for the first time in more than two decades with the film, which deals with victims of oppression who abduct a man they believe was their torturer in prison.
“The bracing thing about ‘It Was Just an Accident’ is that it has married Panahi’s wit and humanism with real anger,” said TheWrap’s review.“… In a festival full of fury, this is one of the films that hits hardest and resonates longest.”

Exclusive: Neon is closing up a deal for rights to Natalie Portman-voiced animation Arco, which recently launched at the Cannes Film Festival.
French director Ugo Bienvenu’s animated feature, which has been described as “France’s answer to Studio Ghibli”, is about a boy who uses rainbows to travel through time and his adventures as he gets stuck in the wrong era.
Oscar winner Portman is also producing with Sophie Mas under their joint Paris and New York banner MountainA with Félix de Givry at Paris-based Remembers.
It’s another win for Neon, which has been voracious once again at Cannes, also acquiring The Secret Agent, It Was Just An Accident and Sirat, in addition to Sentimental Value, which they already had.
Taking its cue from the fantasy premise that rainbows are time machines, the movie revolves around 10 year old rainbow-child Arco, who lives in the distant future, 2932. His...

Updated, May 24: My final ranking of how this year’s Cannes Film Festival titles will shake out while vying for the Palme d’Or is below. Reviews and reactions to late premieres “The Mastermind” (Kelly Reichardt) and “Young Mothers” (Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne) haven’t startled the race too much at this point. The Palme is Neon’s to lose, with either “Sentimental Value,” or the company’s mid-festival acquisitions comprising “It Was Just an Accident,” “Sirât,” or “The Secret Agent” taking the top prize. My money is on “Sentimental Value,” which delivers on the emotion the jury looks for, but who can really be sure?
If not Neon, then the Palme could go to Mubi for Mascha Schilinski’s avant-garde tone poem of generational female anguish, “Sound of Falling.” Expect this film to win something. As for Neon, if they win the 2025 Palme, it’s their sixth in a row after “Parasite,...

With the final weekend of the 78th Cannes Film Festival in sight, it’s time to project who gets the biggest launching pad for the upcoming Oscar season by walking away with the coveted Palme d’Or.
Based on critical reception, audience ovations, and speaking with several sources on the ground and close to the jury members, a handful of films have clearly separated themselves from the pack — none more so than “Sentimental Value,” Joachim Trier’s incisive father-daughter drama that’s become the buzziest title on the Croisette.
Distributed by Neon, which is aiming for an unprecedented sixth consecutive Palme win — after “Parasite,” “Titane,” “Triangle of Sadness,” “Anatomy of a Fall” and “Anora” — “Sentimental Value” received the most enthusiastic standing ovation of the festival. Trier, a Cannes veteran whose “The Worst Person in the World” nabbed Best Actress in 2021, seems poised for a coronation.
However, could it be that easy?...

Neon has secured North American distribution rights to Oliver Laxe’s Sirât following the film’s competition debut at Cannes. The deal, announced on the opening day of the 78th Cannes Film Festival, marks Neon’s fourth competition acquisition this year.
Sirât premiered on May 15, 2025, offering an atmospheric journey into the deserts of southern Morocco. The narrative follows Luis, portrayed by Sergi López, alongside his son Esteban (Bruno Núñez Arjona), as they search for a daughter who vanished amid a desert rave.
Laxe co-wrote the screenplay with Santiago Fillol, melding spiritual symbolism and raw human emotion. Cinematographer Mauro Herce Mira captured the film on Super 16mm, underscoring its tactile, hypnotic quality.
The Spanish-French co-production received €1.2 million in development funding from Spain’s Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts before filming across Teruel and the Moroccan Sahara. Laxe described Sirât as “accessible art with a tribal beat,” emphasizing its fusion of mysticism and music.

Neon will release “It Was Just an Accident” in North American theaters later this year. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
In his rave review for TheWrap, Steve Pond hailed the movie as one of Panahi’s best. It follows a group of individuals who abduct a man they believe to have been an interrogator at Iranian prisoners.

Tom Cruise marks his anticipated Warner Bros. return with an untitled collaboration alongside decorated filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu. Though it was thought the upcoming project would see Cruise play an all-conquering global figure looking to prove he's the world's savior, Iñárritu suggests the movie isn't nearly as serious as it sounds.
Speaking with Deadline at the Cannes Film Festival about his film with Cruise, which recently wrapped production in London after beginning shooting last fall, Iñárritu insisted the movie is a "wild comedy" that proves Cruise's acting range and is a "character-driven" film that will engage audiences. Dissident Iranian director Jafar Panahi struck a chord with “It Was Just an Accident,” one of his most political movies, and his first film since being released from jail in Iran. The movie, which marks his comeback in competition at Cannes seven years after “Three Faces,” was greeted with a nearly eight-minute standing ovation at its premiere on Tuesday.
After the roaring applause died down, Panahi made an emotional speech in which he paid homage to the filmmakers who are currently imprisoned in Iran, saying he felt some guilt upon being released from prison. “I turned around and saw a very high wall. And behind this wall, all these other loved ones, all these people remained behind this wall,” he said. “So I wondered how I could be happy, how I could feel free, if they were still inside.”
He continued: “Today, I’m here with you, I receive this joy,...

Four years after winning the Palme d’Or for Titane, Julia Ducournau is back on the Croisette, debuting her latest Cannes Film Festival Competition entry Alpha. Inside the Palais late Monday local time, the genre-bending movie received a 12-minute ovation.
The response came after a disruption mid-screening, when some audience members in the gallery section began shouting to stop the movie. It turned out that a person was having a medical emergency. The movie continued, however, and the shouts abated after a minute or two. The person later was carried out on a stretcher.
Ducournau thanked all who supported her film after the screening, saying the team “all put a lot into the film.”

Michael Angelo Covino’s open marriage comedy “Splitsville” brought much-needed laughter to Cannes on Monday night, earning a warm six-minute ovation.
As the applause roared, director Covino teared up and Dakota Johnson comforted him with a hug as he kissed her on the cheek.
It was Johnson’s first time in Cannes, but as a Venice Film Festival veteran she’s no stranger to applause. Even still, she humbly waved off the cheers when the camera panned to her first. Then, when Arjona got her roar of approval, her boyfriend Jason Momoa could be seen clapping enthusiastically in the row behind her. Covina and Marvin shared a brotherly embrace as they celebrated another well-received collaboration.
“We need to keep making comedies for Cannes, plain and simple. Because laughter should be seen in a theater, not on a television screen,” said Covino.
