In late 2002, CIA officers at Guantanamo Bay reportedly rented the 1998 Roland Emmerich flick "Godzilla." The film had largely failed to engage the interest of even the most explosion-happy action fans, but the agents were not looking to be entertained. Abu Zubaydah, a high-ranking al Qaeda operative, had confessed to them under interrogation that the terrorist organization had made plans to blow up "the bridge in the Godzilla movie." Had the officers been familiar with the movie they would have known he was talking about the Brooklyn Bridge.

The possibility that a Saudi terrorist knew more about Hollywood than a roomful of American intelligence officials may be obvious in its irony, but isn't unlikely. The men who conceived of and carried out the September 11th attacks were infatuated with American entertainment (the young Bin Laden was said to have been particularly taken with "Bonanza").

Alex Gibney is the Woody Allen of the documentary world, in that the guy is more than a busy little bee.

Along with his portion of the omnibus documentary, Freakonomics, he has a film called My Trip To Al-qaeda, and now we will finally get his follow up to yet another release from 2010, Casino Jack And The United States Of Money, a film called Client 9: The Rise And Fall Of Eliot Spitzer. HBO Documentary Films has acquired domestic TV rights to the feature-length documentary "My Trip to Al Qaeda," directed by Oscar winner Alex Gibney.

The film, described as part doc and part performance piece, is a collaboration between Gibney and Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist Lawrence Wright. It is based on Wright's one-man play and developed from Wright's 2006 book "The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11."

"My Trip to Al Qaeda," performed by Wright, chronicles fundamentalist Islam's rise to power and the dilemma he faces as a writer in maintaining his objectivity.

The movie, a 2010 Tribeca Film Festival selection, will debut on HBO in fall 2010. This is HBO's second collaboration with Gibney, following "Taxi to the Dark Side."

The deal was negotiated by Cinetic Media's John Sloss with HBO.
