Kris Collins’ directorial debut tackles the found footage genre with a tale of paranormal activity that gets lost in predictable scares and an uninspired ensemble.
“I already made one shitty horror film in my lifetime. I don’t need to make another.”
Filmmaking has become increasingly accessible and technology has reached a point where someone can deliver exceptional visuals and tell a complete story with something that was filmed on a phone. Not every story lends itself to a low-budget and small-scale setup. However, these elements are not just accepted, but expected in many found footage horror films. There’s something naturally enticing about a low-stakes, low-budget found footage film that’s presented as a social media personality’s standard content. There can be such powerful payoff when these types of movies work, yet it’s become more common to ride on the subgenre’s coattails than to genuinely innovate...

Michelle Randolph is trading in the rugged landscapes of Taylor Sheridan’s empire for something far darker — and far more subterranean. The 1923 and Landman breakout is in talks to star in Malibu, a new horror thriller from Paranormal Activity 2 director Tod Williams, being developed at Screen Gems, as per THR. The film, which is being produced by horror heavyweights Roy Lee and Steven Schneider under their appropriately named Spooky Pictures banner, is being described as a “subterranean horror thriller.” Plot specifics are being held tightly under wraps — possibly in a basement with no windows — but production is set to begin later this year.
After gaining attention for her role as Liz Strafford in 1923 alongside Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, and Brandon Sklenar, Randolph quickly became a rising name in the Taylor Sheridan TV universe. Her next major role came in Landman, the modern-day oil drama on Paramount+ led by Billy Bob Thornton,...

The climax is arguably the most important part of a movie. It is the last thing the audience is left with. Hence, an ending needs to be powerful. How the plot concludes can make or break the film experience. Some endings imprint themselves on the viewers’ minds, while others do not have as much of a lasting impact. Some endings are polarizing. After all, not every cinematic project garners unanimous praise or even acceptance. They leave with controversy in their wake.
Controversial endings lead to some jaws dropping and some brows scrunching. A masterfully curated climax can inspire a plethora of feelings in the audience. Or it can ignite serious disputes, debates, and discussions; which gain a cult following and last for years on end. For instance, Was there enough room on the door for Jack to stay afloat alongside Rose in Titanic might go down as the most debated movie ending of all time.

January is the least exciting time for new movie releases due to factors like bad weather and people's frugal spending habits. Studios use this month to release films that didn't perform well in test screenings or at the box office. Some successful films have been released in January, including limited-release award contenders that expand nationwide in the month and horror films that face little competition. While there have been some surprise hits in January, it is unlikely that the reputation of the month as a dumping ground for Hollywood's leftovers will change anytime soon.
2023 is finally gone, and with the awards season about to kick into full swing, the major Oscar contenders have all been released. But as we wait to see what the Academy decides to crown this year, we unfortunately have to endure the least exciting time of the year for new releases. For at least the last few decades,...

Kerry Condon follows up her Oscar nomination with a thankless piece of Blumhouse schlock that tries, and fails, to make swimming pools scary

Masterworks such as The Devil Inside (6%), Texas Chainsaw 3D (19%), The Forest (10%) and The Unborn (10%) have all crept out of the gate in previous years, often unscreened for critics, and despite a consistent lack of quality, the practice has become profitable, audiences happy to see in the new year with the very worst the industry has to offer. If you love your spine-chilling narratives with a hint of some good old folklore then the trailer for Lord of Misrule, an upcoming indie folk-horror helmed by William Brent Bell, will excite you. Bell's track record speaks for itself as the director has in the past created gems such as The Devil Inside, Stay Alive, Orphan: First Kill, and The Boy. The recently unveiled trailer hints at yet another potential triumph from the director. For starters, there's an eerie mask-wearing cult in the movie's town and there seems to be some mysterious dark history behind the town legacy.

For horror fans hoping that David Gordon Green's (overall) successful reboot of Halloween would translate equally well to the Exorcist franchise, we hate to be the bearer of bad news. The Exorcist: Believer is getting eviscerated by critics; as of this writing, it holds an outright dire Rotten Tomatoes score of 20%. Not only is that a lower score than any of Green's Halloween films, it's the third-lowest rating in the franchise. Only Exorcist II: The Heretic and Exorcist: The Beginning got worse reviews.
So what happened, considering Green showed such initial promise as a horror director with 2018's Halloween legacy sequel? Do the reviews spell box office disaster for his intended trilogy before it even begins?
Box Office Trouble?
The answer thus far seems to be no... at least for now. Current box office projections predict The Exorcist: Believer to earn between $30 and $36 million in its opening weekend,...

Warning: Contains spoilers for various movie endings.
Bad movie endings can ruin the entire movie, including poorly executed plot twists and vague conclusions. For example, the ending of "Identity" relied on shock value over substance, revealing that everything that happened in the film was just in someone's head. Another example is "The Devil Inside," which had an abysmal ending, cutting to black without any resolution and providing a website link for viewers to learn more.
Landing a good movie ending is extremely important, as a poor conclusion can leave audiences with a bad taste in their mouth. A film, or any story for that matter, is often defined by its ending. For example, Game of Thrones was a massive cultural phenomenon in the 2010s, but the widely criticized ending caused it to almost immediately be wiped from relevance. The third act of a film is perhaps the most important to sell,...

While twist endings can be great, some movie endings are so frustrating that they render the entire proceeding plot pointless in retrospect. Some movies can have incredibly uplifting, hopeful endings. Other movies have cruel endings that stun audiences but are undeniably fitting in terms of theme and tone, such as Darabont’s later King adaptation The Mist. Then there are the movies that have endings that make their whole story seem like an exercise in futility. These endings aren’t always necessarily surprising, but they do leave the viewer feeling oddly cheated.
While some movies change their original premise halfway through the story to focus on new characters or another plot, this sort of playful experimentation can be rewarding. However, movies that wait until their last scene to lose all interest in their characters are much more annoying. These movies set up intriguing plots and compelling characters only to leave...

Netflix is reshuffling its streaming offerings once again, and the latest round of movies set to leave the platform includes a few new horror classics. More specifically, if you're looking for a scary movie to watch in September, you'll have to cross Oren Peli's 2009 horror phenomenon "Paranormal Activity" off your to-watch list before then, as it's due to leave the streamer at the end of this month.
"Paranormal Activity" may not be the most enduringly scary horror touchstone of the past two decades (its slow burn scares were polarizing even upon initial release), but it's certainly among the most replicated. The shoestring-budget flick about a couple who set up security cameras to pinpoint the source of unusual happenings in their home was inescapable upon its release, earning nearly $200 million at the box office and spawning six sequels and spinoffs and counting. Along with J.J. Abrams' "Cloverfield," the film...

Movie fans debate disappointing endings that make movies feel like a waste of time. From the unfaithful ending of the Watchmen film to the surname appropriation at the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, there are plenty of controversial movie endings. Endings are always tricky, because they have to resolve the film’s themes and narrative in a satisfying way. Twist endings don’t always feel earned, or land the way they’re intended to land. Some movie endings are wildly controversial, either because they deal with offensive subject matter, like the lighthearted crucifixion at the end of Monty Python’s Life of Brian, or because they fail to provide closure, like the anticlimax of The Devil Inside.
There are many reasons why an ending might divide audiences. If it’s a remake or adaptation that alters the ending of the source material, the new ending might be deemed to be inferior. If it’s too ambiguous and leaves too many questions unanswered,...

Beginning with Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist in the '60s and '70s, the best exorcism movies have deftly combined the psychological thrills of the unseen with the visceral and grotesque manifestations of malevolent spirits. Whether it is demons, tormented human souls, gods, or creatures from folklore, exorcists in movies confront the worst and most dangerous entities to crossover into the physical realm. Scary exorcism movies are traditionally based on Catholic or Judeo-Christian mythology. However, Asian filmmakers have also been tapping into Eastern folklore and mythology to contribute to the world's best exorcism movies, giving the overplayed horror subgenre a much-needed shakeup.
Indeed, while movies about demonic possession such as The Pope's Exorcist and The Exorcism of God keep the genre's core traditions alive, others like The Medium, The Wailing, and Keeper of Darkness tread new ground and open new creative avenues for the exorcism subgenre to grow. Today,...

Movies about possession and exorcism must scratch a very particular itch for American viewers. Going back to the mother of that horror subgenre, "The Exorcist," you can see one of the biggest box office hits of 1973, and in the fifty years since, many movies have played with that premise. A filmmaker can do it relatively cheaply, often just needing to rely on fearless performers willing to contort themselves and speak in tongues. And seeing an ordered world enter total disarray is what horror is all about.
William Brent Bell's 2012 film "The Devil Inside" took that to heart, dealing with the threat of possession through a mockumentary, found-footage lens. In the movie's universe, it's a documentary about Isabella (Fernanda Andrade) as she investigates her mother, particularly the grisly murders she committed when Isabella was a child. After escaping from a psychiatric facility in Estonia, Esther travels to America by impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family. Yet, an unexpected twist arises that pits her against a mother who will protect her family at any cost.
“There’s always been something wrong with Esther,” says the tagline on the poster for William Brent Bell‘s brand new psychological horror film Orphan: First Kill, which serves as a prequel to the 2009 film Orphan, which features one of the most insanely brilliant twists in film history.
The tagline of this film is absolutely true, as well. This tightly constructed 99-minute thrill-ride is a gritty, thrilling, and chillingly dark exploration of Esther’s origins, brought to life beautifully by a sharp script and a powerful performance from Isabelle Fuhrman,...

A muddled execution undercuts laudable ambitions in the latest effort from director William Brent Bell, who previously demonstrated his talent for turning low-budget horror films into major commercial hits with such movies as The Devil Inside and The Boy. The filmmaker mines deeper emotional terrain than usual with Separation, which attempts to inject scares into a Kramer vs. Kramer-inspired scenario. But the film squanders its intriguing set-up and terrific performances by devolving into familiar genre tropes. Not that it will prevent horror-starved audiences from flocking to see it on the big screen thanks to the further lifting of pandemic restrictions.

While the last decade that Jaume Collet-Serra excelled in providing a genuine Hitchcockian vision to B-movie concepts, it was 2009’s Orphan that served as a notable breakout. Telling the story of a couple who adopts a nine-year-old girl harboring secrets of her own, it was a stellar showcase for the director to flex his psychological horror muscles. Now, over a decade later, a prequel is moving forward.
Sadly, Collet-Serra will not be returning to the director’s chair, giving the reins to William Brent Bell. However, star Isabelle Fuhrman––who is now 23––will be returning to the role of Esther, Deadline reports. One may wonder how Fuhrman will be embodying the role of someone younger than nine, and it’s reported that the production, which is now underway in Winnipeg, will be utilizing “forced perspective shooting and a world-class makeup team.”

Looks like something is still wrong with Esther.
Isabelle Fuhrman, who broke out in Hollywood as the lead of the disturbing 2009 hit “Orphan,” will reprise her role in an upcoming prequel to the film.
Fuhrman played Esther, an Eastern European child adopted by parents (played by Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga) overcoming an unspeakable loss of their own. It earned $80 million worldwide on a reported $20 million budget.
While the movie received mixed reviews, it was largely credited with delivering a twist that broke new ground in the sub-genre of disturbed little kids — Esther was not a child at all, but an adult woman with primordial dwarfism masquerading as a nine-year-old. This made her attempts to split up her parents and eliminate her siblings all the more sinister and unforgettable.
While the prequel’s plot is under wraps, Fuhrman will return as star and associate producer on the project. William Brent Bell...

In something of a surprise announcement, it's been revealed that we're getting a prequel to 2009's Orphan. There is no word on casting yet, but production is expected to begin this summer,...
