Stephanie Hsu said she could not contain her laughter for several takes when Sabrina Wu's Deadeye was explaining their nickname to Kat by putting on a blank expression.
Director Adele Lim said the genital tattoo scene with Kat was inspired by a friend of hers who was a full-on freak in college. She was afraid the production company would tell her, "Fuck, no!" But she said when you work with Seth Rogen's company, their reaction is, "Fuck, yes!"
In addition to a cameo appearance, Daniel Dae Kim was involved with casting suggestions. He recommended Ashley Park (Audrey) and Stephanie Hsu (Kat) after working with and befriending them on Broadway productions.
A life-size set of Lolo's "adult playground" art piece was built at a park in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. A sequence was filmed but was later cut.
The working title was "Joy Fuck Club", a nod to the 1993 film "The Joy Luck Club", a drama featuring a predominant Asian-American ensemble cast.
