Manoj Bajpayee in Despatch (2024)

Great Actor, but Movie is Incomplete

The film suffers from unnecessary adult scenes and a lack of connection between the stories. Manoj's dialogues are often hard to understand, not due to volume but poor voice clarity, making key moments frustrating. While natural delivery is appreciated, essential lines must remain audible. Additionally, the attempt to highlight the 2G Scam feels underwhelming; the narrative deserved a stronger, more coherent approach. Overall, the execution fails to engage effectively, leaving a lot to be desired in both storytelling and technical aspects. I dont know about other reviews who are saying it is great movie and all.

No Thrill

Anwar Says: The film was marked as thriller but you are hardly thrilled. Tension is found only on the face of Manoj Bajpayee , not in the movie. It took eight years to get released, this Kanu Behl directorial debut, containing all the ingredients for investigating journalism but your wait doesn't end till the film is over. The role, though tailor made for Manoj , but he should reconsider the decision to carry the movie alone.

The supporting cast did well, particularly the females in the life of Manoj. His frustration of a disturbed married life, hardly get solace with a much younger girlfriend and the occasional fling with co-journalist Noorie, ably played by Rii Sen. So many angles were put in like 2G spectrum scam, shell companies , D-Company and hardly finds any breakthrough.

On the whole, I had lot of expectations after watching Behl's TITLI and AGRA , when Manoj is in the lead but was disappointed. 4 out of 10 from me.

A bad storyline and Unnecessary adult scenes

The movie fails to engage with the storyline, and I don't understand why Manoj Bajpayee was made to deliver his dialogues so slowly as if he had some kind of speech problem. I was very excited about this film, but honestly, I had to look up the scam it was based on to better understand it. In a nutshell, if you're not familiar with this scam, you won't be able to grasp the movie fully.

Much cry and little wool

There was a lot of buzz bout the film due to one of the most fabulous bollywood actor manoj bajpayee. I too was really excited for the movie. Initially when movie started I thought plot is great storyline must be even amazing even in the last 20 minutes of movie I thought maybe something will happen but it never. Absolutely waste of time, for someone like me who watches movie for story it wasn't upto the mark for which people need to see the movie. Effort was put in acting and directing but what can anybody do when the characters are not making any point. I wasn't able to connect with the movie even once.

Don't West your Time

've always been a huge fan of Manoj Bajpayee's acting. His performances are usually extraordinary, and I admire the depth he brings to his roles. However, this series was a massive disappointment. To be honest, it felt less like a well-thought-out production and more like something bordering on a p0rn movie with excessive s*xual content. The storyline seemed to take a backseat, overshadowed by these unnecessary scenes.

It's disheartening to see an actor of Manoj sir's caliber involved in something like this. I expected so much more from him, given his incredible talent. Honestly, you'd be better off watching cartoons on Pogo than wasting time on this series. I really hope Manoj sir chooses better scripts in the future, ones that reflect his brilliance as an actor.

A good attempt at an underexplored genre which fails to live up to its potential

Despatch was a very pretty mixed experience. It draws inspiration from the crime journalism thrillers of Hollywood from the previous millennium and translates it well to an Indian setting and current era but at the same time somewhat alienates itself from Indian movie making stylistically by injecting it with some gratuitous (Almost) nudity that is irrelevant and not pertinent to the progression of the story. Not sure how the multiple shots of Manoj Bajpayee's bare backside adds an additional level of complexity and nuance to his character. Those scenes make the watching of the movie a bit uncomfortable without adding any real value.

Manoj Bajpayee does an overall good job but it feels like he is playing multiple inconsistent characters through the duration of the movie which is a bit on the longer side at 151 minutes. Kanu Behl should have either trimmed the story and focus on his failing relationship and made Despatch into a leaner and meaner 1.5 hr to 2 hr thriller or gone all out and explored the nuances of the various relationships and expanded this into a longer format mini series like Killer Soup earlier this year that would have given the stories more time and air to breath, mature and shape up better.

In my opinion the story and characters needed some more time. Individually the stories, relationships, characters and the acting are all good. Shahana, Arrchita, Rii are all pretty good in their respective roles and all deserved some more time. Overall Despatch is a good attempt at a underexplored genre in Hindi Cinema but it fails to live up to its potential. 6/10.

Expect more from Manoj Bajpayee

Truth is always stranger than fiction. This much-heard proverb looks fresh till date. But can life, achievement, dignity, impression, and more importantly relevance be perceived from the same parameter? The answer is an emphatic affirmation. The realm of art and creativity is no exception. This goes on and on. But what lesson does it teach? This is far more important for an artist or artiste than those who like to plunge here and get rejoiced. People have neither time nor interest to know about the outcry behind creations. The pathetic reality is: art does not allow the performer to compel one swallowing a bitter pill; a boring narrative. Who cares for those who fail? The world adores the rising sun and the artists or artistes are no exceptions.

This prelude seems somewhat applicable in the context of renowned actor Manoj Bajapayee; one of the brilliant performers of modern Indian cinema. Bajapayee has already become icon as a versatile actor. Importantly, apart from ordinary cine-goers or today's movie-viewers in the OTT platforms, Bajapayee has fans and followers among his contemporary artistes which is really significant achievement. There is no doubt that Bajpayee has redefined Indian Movies to great extent. But problem begins as one takes things for granted.

In fact, cinema has travelled a long way since Gangs of Wasseypur and such others. This generation wants to watch something else. But what is that? This became more predominant in 2024 and in the contemporary race; actor like Manoj Bajapayee status seems staggering. Manoj Bajpayee has not looked in proper rhythm in 2024. In most cases Bajpayee has made wrong choices or performed in stereotypical manner. Although, Bajpayee has performed in many unconventional characters in 2024, but nothing looks impressive.

Naturally, the viewers kept on waiting for the Movie Despatch; perhaps the last Bajpayee starrer Movie in 2024. But unfortunately, Manoj Bajpapyee has failed to impress despite ample opportunities. The storyline of the movie is absolutely good. However, all eyes were on Manoj Bajpayee. The point which seemed the strongest one has proved to be ineffective for the Movie; the role performed by Bajpayee. Really, except some scenes reflecting his class of acting, Bajpayee has failed to perform as per his merit. This particular Movie bears special significance for Bajpayee like acting stalwart. Perhaps the renowned actor has missed to measure the changing discourses and so he has failed to do justice with his potential caliber. The year 2024 has not been productive for him. But much is expected from Manoj Bajpayee in the days ahead. The cine-lovers want more from him.

Really an unexplored genre

It's good movie for people who enjoys to open ending in a story as it gives us a lot of angle to see.

Manoj Bajpayee in a totally different character

Cinematography of this film is beautiful. Manoj Bajpayee! I don't know how he do it. You can't believe it is the same daring guy of Family Man or Ek banda kaafi hai. He served the movie so well with his acting skills. All the characters were good, the movie lacked in storyline only. You won't be engaged with the film till end though it will give you chills in many scenes. Also the climax was not satisfying. You can only watch this film if you're a Manoj Bajpaye fan. Rating it 6 because the effort of the director and producer was great to make this a good film, they just missed a good storyline.

Boring

If you are a Manoj Bajpayee fan and expecting something similar to Family Man, Aiyaari, Silence, 100 etc. Then you will be disappointed. Very slow. Unnecessary vulgar scenes. When the story and presentation does not have spice, making vulgar scenes will never. In Short, Bakwaas. 3/10 is a higher star rating for this. Too many characters possibly trying make reality in movie. Sometimes, as an audience one may start thinking which character is the story referring to and feel just lost. I am a great fan of Manoj Bajpayee and have seen many of his top quality movies or series. This one is even worse than Bhaiyaji. I think Manoj Bajpayee is almost in the end of his era of lead roles. Manoj sir. You have an image in public mind. Please don't destroy it.

AVERAGE

There's no doubt that Manoj Bajpaee is an absolutely brilliant actor. However apparently when he acts in C grade movies like DESPATCH (and other films from Zee 5) he reduces his quality of acting to match the overall quality of the film. Everything about this movie at best was average with nothing at all including the overall acting direction screenplay editing being praiseworthy in the slightest. Films like these don't stand a chance in the cinemas and are ideal only for OTT. Very difficult to enjoy these type of movies where everything is of such a very poor quality. These are forgettable movies.

Nonsense movie

This is utterly nonsense storyline moreover the audio was not clear. It's not clear what's happening in the movie. Subject less and story line is not executed well. Even the concept of movie didn't work. Half of the time there are some adult grade scenes which make no sense and not aligned with storyline the movie could only get initial audience because of Manoj Sir's face value. Other wise its just waste of time. One will not even understand what the movie is made for. I am very sure most of the positive reviews of this movie are purchased or sponsored ones to just create a hype. Otherwise the plot is not understood TIME WASTE.

Took me 10 days to finish but I didn't give up

As Manoj Vajpayee is trying to put together what is going on, so are we. Like I still have no idea what the movie was about or what was the plot. An apt title for the movie would have been "you don't know what you are getting into" because that's like the 50% of the dialogues. And neither the protagonist or the audience really find out what he was getting into.

You start the movie and 5 minutes into it, you can't go on but then something also compels you to watch it, like an unfinished task that is so boring that you keep procrastinating but also annoys you that it is not done so you keep chipping away at it. Likely that's also why it took 8 years to finish it. I am glad that it is over and I can move on.

This is garbage

No motive no story nothing to watch in this also why manoj giving the nude scene, i think manoj don't have anything to do for now that is why he is nothing to do new besides remove cloth and naked scene. Very pathetic, do not watch with family. It is garbage. I was huge fan of manoj but this time he disappointed. I dont understand the motive of the movie. I dont understand why the male acter need to have remove cloth and shoot the nude scenes. I would say just watch Agni pratik gandhi movie beside this. The agni is the best movie for now. Pratik was superb rather than nude manoj. What an a actor pratik.

Good (MAMI MFF 2024 #5)

Despatch starts off really well and I was rooting for Joy Bag (Manoj Bajpayee) as he starts investigating a murder for a story in his paper. I tell myself this is good cinema until Joy gets entangled in a mess. Then all goes haywire as the plot grips and you scratch your head wondering who called him and why and what happened there and oh was that it. Despatch is a film with a lot of potential to send a message about whistleblowers but in an attempt to be a lot of things together, it ends up being a master of none. Still, this is a good Kanu Behl film if you have the time to watch and appreciate Bajpayee's natural acting. Just pay extra attention in the last parts.

(Watched its world premiere at the 2024 MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.)

Boring Non-story! Too bad!!

I watched the entire movie with extreme patience till end only to waste entire time in a baseless run of the mill Mumbaiya story with no substance. It looked more like an unclear documentary rather than a movie.

Firstly, it is a non-story narrated in an extremely dull and monotonous manner that lacks everything that could keep the audience engaged. It is a unfocussed confused story that talks about the protagonist Joy Bag, a Mumbai based journalist leading a lower middle class life. Totally confused and unsettled in his job but well accepted and applauded by his colleagues, without any notable quality. A below-average looking, bespectacled middle-aged, lean bodied Joy with a rough face and poor personality man yet adored by wife, a girlfriend and an additional sex-mate equally and all the three crave for him for god known reasons. He starts working on a case yet gets drifted to another case, getting into a wild goose chase and finally gets killed by a set of goons of some unknown person. The audience remains confused about the characters in the non-story, who is what? How is he related to the lead character? What is the matter being discussed on screen? And where does the story lead to next? The characterization is extremely poor and left totally unclear and is left to the wisdom of the audience. The latter keeps guessing about the various characters of the story, their profession, their profile and their connection with the main story. At one point, the protagonist suddenly packs his bag and leaves for London as if going from Churchgate to Matunga in Mumbai, locally. To compensate an extra dose of ugly kisses and sex scenes have been forced at many places into the story, an absolute waste and abhorring!

Now since there is no story in the movie, we cannot talk about acting. All the actors look trivial and uninterested, as if worked for free. No make up, poorest of the poor locales, shabby buildings, untidy homes and dirty roads are shown in entire movie. All the actors look worse than usual and far below average if not ugly without even the least of the makeup. Dialogues are inaudible at several places and keep switching between English to Hindi to Marathi to what not.

Manoj Bajpai is a misfit for the role and looks overaged, Shahana Goswami appears bad in the role despite a hard try, Rituparna Sen, Archita Agarwal and all others all make wasteful attempts to enact their unclear roles and look more confused than the audience.

In all it is a wasteful attempt that fails in every aspect. Rating 0/100.

Finally a realistic film on investigative journalism in India

Yes there were parts of the movie where I felt a bit lost. We go along with the protagonist in unearthing the story, but we don't know as much as he knows and that creates a bit of confusion. The Director had to fit in a lot of facts within a short time, I wished this was a series. It needed a slower build up, there is enough ammunition to last 10 episodes. Also, from the audience's point of view, we would learn something in the process- about scams, about laws broken, this film could also educate us in the process then.

Yet, I loved the film. We need more films like these in India about real people and real events.

Direction, casting, acting is all 5 stars.

This isn't just a film, this is more than that because the death of an investigative journalist casts serious doubts on the state of democracy.

This film makes us think about a lot of issues.

How these investigative journalists put their lives at risk to show us the true face of our society. Yet They dont earn much.

I liked the treatment , liked how the story is told.

Manoj Bajpayee being him. But story ran a bit low

I know most people gave low ratings but i still liked it to a lot. One time watch. It was not able to invoke any good emotion. Not thriller not anything much. I liked Manoj's acting but again . Underutilized.

There were just too many unnecessary movie scenes that could be definitely removed. They were not carrying the movie it was supposed to go.

Its about the life of a normal reporter who was caught in the in the middle of a big scam that was far bigger than him. Then its just how he tries to play tom and jerry. But ultimately its was happens all the time. There were a lot of non fiction elements to the movie. Few instance mentioned in the movie were relatable to the news that took place. I though it was going to be such of a biopic kinda of a scam. Well. Sadly.

Interesting but predictable

Review of DESPATCH: A Gripping Tale of Crime Journalism

DESPATCH is a captivating thriller that delves into the gritty world of crime journalism, inspired by the life of renowned crime beat journalist J. Dey (Jyotirmoy Dey), who was associated with the Mumbai tabloid Mid-Day. This fictionalized account offers a unique perspective on the challenges and dangers faced by investigative journalists.

The film stands out largely due to the stellar performance of Manoj Bajpayee, whose portrayal of the lead character is both compelling and layered. Supporting actors like Arrchita Aggarwal and Rituparna Sen deliver commendable performances, while character actors such as Haanssa Singh (as Nisha Lodha) and Kabir Sadanand bring depth to the narrative. However, the underutilization of a talented actor like Shahana Goswami in a relatively insignificant role is a missed opportunity.

The screenplay does an excellent job of exploring the struggles of traditional print media in the digital age, highlighting the pressures journalists face to produce authentic yet sensational stories that can dominate front pages for weeks. It also sheds light on the intricate network of informers and the personal risks these journalists take to uncover prime news.

While the film occasionally falters in its execution, its engaging storyline and standout performances make DESPATCH a worthwhile watch, particularly for those interested in the intersection of media, crime, and the human cost of bringing stories to light.

Seriously a very stupid movie

I wonder how a seasoned actor like Manoj Bajpayee agreed to act in such a brainless / clueless dumb movie.

The movie has nothing to offer in terms of entertainment, but for the hero banging ladies at the drop of a hat! - if you call that an entertainment!

The story is wafer thin and has no depth. The movie is so loosely based on the events around the murder of seasoned crime journalist Jyotirmoy Dey, who started his career with The Afternoon Despatch & Courier,

The plotline of the movie is supposed to be filled with tension, but here, we can see the tension only of the face of Joy (Manoj Bajpayee). He is just running around in taxi / mororcycle with his backpack.

The story about a big scam, teeters to a grinding halt, without seamless screenplay.

Don't waste your time in watching this.
