From Starsky & Hutch to Miami Vice, the genre gave us mismatched partners who bickered, bantered, and ultimately brought down the bad guys.

It was escapism at its finest — a world of fast cars, sharp one-liners, and explosive finales.

But over the years, the buddy cop genre has faded from the U.S. small screen.

Don’t worry, though; it’s alive and well — it just packed its bags and went global.

A Brief History of Buddy Cop Glory

The buddy cop formula hit its stride in the 1980s and 1990s, an era when the appeal of Lethal Weapon and Beverly Hills Cop carried over from the big screen to TV.

Shows like Starsky & Hutch and Cagney & Lacey offered variations on the theme, combining humor, action, and, occasionally, a dash of drama.

Fox's crime drama Prison Break ran for five original seasons in the mid to late 2000s and starred several actors with successful TV careers. Seeing the success of serialized shows like Lost and 24, the network had faith in the success of Prison Break. The series is set in prison and stars Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller as imprisoned brothers Lincoln Burrows and Michael Scofield. The former is accused of murder and sentenced to death, while the latter gets himself put in prison so he can break his brother out, believing he is innocent.

The thrills and originality established in Prison Break season 1 earned widespread acclaim. Though later seasons of Prison Break would struggle to return to a similar status, the series still had a strong fan base. The first season of The Acolyte is in the books, concluding with an action-packed finale that saw Osha switching sides to join The Stranger as his new acolyte. The final shot of the two, sees them holding hands and looking out into the ocean, and showrunner Leslye Headland recently revealed that the final shot was influenced by one of David Fincher's classic films, Fight Club.

In an interview with Vulture, Headland addressed many facets about the finale, but revealed how Fincher's Fight Club had a strong influence over how the series unfolded. "A big influence for me was Fight Club. Its about being stuck in institutions and expectations," Headland said. The showrunner would go on to explain how The Stranger was influenced greatly by Tyler Durden, the alter ego of the Narrator in Fincher's classic film.

Fresh off the success of her Star Wars series, The Acolyte, director Leslye Headland has found new agents as she has signed with CAA for representation.

Headland created the series starring Lee Jung-Jae and Amandla Stenberg. The Acolyte reached 4.8 million views in its first day of streaming, marking the biggest series premiere of 2024 for Disney+. Prior to this series, Headland co-created the Netflix series Russian Doll, which garnered 13 Emmy Award nominations in its first season. Her additional television credits include Terriers, Heathers, Single Drunk Female and Dying For Sex, which recently wrapped production.

Leslye Headland, creator of the new Disney+ series Star Wars: The Acolyte, will make her Broadway debut this fall with the Second Stage Theater production of her play Cult of Love. Trip Cullman will direct.

Headland’s play, making its New York premiere, begins performances at the Hayes Theater on Wednesday, November 20, with opening night set for Thursday, December 12.

Cult of Love will be part of the 46th anniversary season of Second Stage, which just won the Tony Award for Best Revival/Play for Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Appropriate.

The company also announced today that its upcoming Off Broadway slate will include the New York premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winner Donald Margulies’ Lunar Eclipse, directed by Kate Whoriskey and starring Reed Birney and Lisa Emery.

Previews of Lunar Eclipse begin Wednesday, October 9, at the Tony Kiser Theater, with opening night on Wednesday, October 30.

When 9-1-1 co-creator Tim Minear signed up on Twitter (now known as X), he chose a telling handle to denote his legacy as a screenwriter and director: @Cancelledagain. “I was sort of infamous for all of my thundering failures over the years,” explains Minear. “Firefly lasted one season, Terriers one season, The Inside one season, Drive went for six episodes. Everything was canceled, so I just called myself ‘cancelled again,’ which actually worked out for me because these are all beloved little cult shows now.”

Star Wars: The Acolyte creator Leslye Headland is currently putting the finishing touches on a four-year journey that started with Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy buying her overall series pitch in the room. At the time, her hook was “Frozen meets Kill Bill,” and now the first trailer provides a few more of the puzzle pieces. Set a century before Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Amandla Stenberg’s mysterious character appears to be hunting Jedi during a time of peace near the end of the High Republic era.

The trailer kicks off with Lee Jung-jae’s Jedi Master urging a group of Padawans to not trust their own deceitful eyes, and perhaps the same can be said of the trailer and the series’ overall narrative. In an age where binge-watching has become the norm, we often find ourselves lost in the labyrinth of multi-season dramas. While these shows can be incredibly rewarding, there's something to be said for a concise, well-crafted story that doesn't overstay its welcome. Sometimes, a short series can be a breath of fresh air, offering a unique perspective and telling a complete story in just a handful of episodes.

I’ve been doing this long enough to remember the days when film folks saw doing TV as a bit of a step down, or a one-time novelty — and even TV folks felt like they were in the minors, waiting for that call to join the movie big leagues. That hasn’t been the case for a while, and I like to needle my film colleagues with the now-established fact that TV is where it’s at. The rise of streaming just cemented that.

It’s still fun, though, to chat with creatives who have spent most of their career in film, and hear about their experiences in working on TV series. Inevitably, they must admit that working in TV was both gratifying — and perhaps the hardest thing they’ve ever done.

“Knives Out” filmmaker Rian Johnson, for example, wasn’t a stranger to TV when he started working on Peacock’s “Poker Face.

Netflix's The Night Agent is an exciting political thriller from the mind of Shawn Ryan. The 10-episode series centers on Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) and Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), a low-level FBI agent and young tech CEO, who become embroiled in a far-reaching, and deadly, conspiracy. The Night Agent is based on a book by Matthew Quirk of the same name.

Another major player in the events of The Night Agent is the U.S. President's Chief of Staff Diane Farr, played by Hong Chau. The Night Agent showrunner answers about the possibility of season 2. Currently streaming on Netflix, The Night Agent is led by Gabriel Basso in the role of FBI Agent Peter Sutherland. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the Disney-backed basic-cable network has canceled the drama based on Octavia E. Butler’s 1979 novel about a young Black woman who is pulled back and forth in time. Showrunner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (Watchmen) is expected to shop the drama from FX Productions as he envisioned a multiple-season run for the series.

Reps for FX declined to comment.

Lyonne stars as Charlie, an effortlessly cool, cheap beer drinking woman with a preternatural ability to solve crimes. After a casino boss seeks her out to use her abilities for nefarious purposes, Charlie goes on the run and gets mixed up in more crimes.

Johnson says that it’s a “how to catch ‘em” rather than a whodunnit as the crime is front and center in each episode.

I spent two years fighting the complications of desperately wanting to recommend AMC’s delightfully weird dramedy Lodge 49 and being generally unable to even describe the show. Minear, who has the longest-running overall deal at “9-1-1” studio 20th Television, is best known for his work on “Angel,” “Firefly,” “Dollhouse,” “American Horror Story,” “Terriers,” “Feud,” “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” and “Wonderfalls.” But of those shows, the ones he personally created are best known for being very short-lived. New York Times bestselling political conspiracy thriller “The Night Agent” will get the silver screen treatment by Netflix. The streamer has greenlit the series for a book-to-tv adaptation, tapping creator Shawn Ryan to executive produce. The show will hail from Sony Pictures Television.

Per the logline, “The Night Agent,” based on the novel of the same name by Matthew Quirk, is a “sophisticated, character-based, action-thriller centering on a low-level FBI Agent who works in the basement of the White House, manning a phone that never rings — until the night that it does, propelling him into a fast-moving and dangerous conspiracy that ultimately leads all the way to the Oval Office.” The novel’s audio version currently holds a 4.2 out of 5 score on Amazon’s Audible platform.

Sony TV is developing an adaptation of the 2005 skateboarding film “Lords of Dogtown” for IMDb TV.

Catherine Hardwick, who directed the 2005 film, will executive produce with Shawn Ryan and Marney Hochman.

“Lords of Dogtown” centered on the 1970s skateboarding scene in Southern California. That film starred Emile Hirsch, Victor Rasuk, John Robinson, Michael Angarano, Nikki Reed, Heath Ledger, Rebecca De Mornay and Johnny Knoxville.

The TV series will be written by Kat Candler and is a one-hour ensemble-drama, centered around a hell-raising teenage girl growing up in the foster-care system. She falls in with a crowd of skaters who idolize the famed Zephyr Skateboard Team, who were portrayed in the film.

IMDb TV is Amazon’s free ad-supported streaming service. The service in recent months has landed the rights to AMC’s “Mad Men” (which it is sharing with AMC in the U.S.) as well as Judge Judy Sheindlin’s upcoming courtroom series.

Clayne Crawford and filmmaker Robert Machoian will re-team on “The Integrity of Joseph Chambers,” a drama about a family man who must learn to hunt in order to provide for his family. The film is Crawford and Machoian’s second collaboration, following “The Killing of Two Lovers,” a marital drama that premiered to smashing reviews at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Neon bought “The Killing of Two Lovers,” and is planning a February release, which will allow it to qualify for awards. Production on “The Integrity of Joseph Chambers” has begun in Alabama.

Jordana Brewster, Michael Raymond-James and Jeffrey Dean Morgan will also appear in the film.

Machoian wrote the screenplay with Crawford in mind to play the lead role. Set in the midst of our current economic crisis, the story focuses on a husband and father, Joe (Crawford) who finds that it’s more difficult than he expected to kill his own food.

Hollywood producers are betting big on the popularity of Resident Evil, with an animated series, a feature film reboot and a live-action TV show in the works. Of course, the more casual viewer’s mind will immediately jump to the franchise spearheaded by Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich, which never found much in the way of critical acclaim but managed to draw in over $1.2 billion at the box office across six installments.

The movies were action-heavy blockbusters with horror and sci-fi elements as opposed to the more atmospheric chills found in the best games in the back catalogue, and the upcoming reboot will be returning to the basics. Director Johannes Roberts has some solid experience in the horror genre, and he’s already intimated that he’s looking to make his Resident Evil a more terrifying and visceral experience.

A new ‘Star Wars’ series, which is said to be female-focused, is currently in development at Disney+.

The series will come from the co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer of the critically-acclaimed Netflix series ‘Russian Doll’, Lesley Headland. Headland will write and serve on the production.

As yet, plot details are not forthcoming but sources have said it will be set in a timeline that doesn’t correspond to any of the current ‘Star Wars’ projects.

A new “Star Wars” series is in the works at Disney Plus, Variety has learned from sources. The series hails from Leslye Headland, the co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer of the critically-acclaimed Netflix series “Russian Doll.”

Details of the exact plot of the series are being kept under wraps, but sources say it will be a female-centric series that takes place in a different part of the “Star Wars” timeline than other projects. Headland is said to be attached to write and serve as showrunner on the series, with the show currently staffing.

Reps for Disney and Headland did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for comment.

There is perhaps no more beloved celebrity in Hollywood then Tom Hanks, so it should come as no surprise that the news that he and wife Rita Wilson tested positive for coronavirus has left many stars shaken.

FX’s Terriers — one of the poster children for Gone Too Soon TV Shows (and the recipient of more than a few votes in TVLine’s Bring Back One Cancelled Show poll) — is finally streaming again after being offline for more than two years.

Russian Doll co-creator Leslye Headland has signed a multi-year, overall deal with Fox 21 Television Studios to create, develop and direct series for network, cable and streaming platforms.

Headland co-created with Natasha Lyonne and Amy Poehler dramedy Russian Doll which is heading into its second season on Netflix. The series was nominated for 13 Emmy awards for its first season, winning two.

Leslye Headland is getting back in business with Fox 21 Television Studios.

The “Russian Doll” co-creator, who worked with the studio on the 2010 FX series “Terriers,” has signed a multi-year overall deal with the Disney-owned studio. As part of the deal, Headland will be looking to create, develop and direct series for network, cable and streaming platforms.

Headland is best known for co-creating “Russian Doll” with Amy Poehler and series star Natasha Lyonne. The series’ first season was nominated for a hatful of Emmys, taking home three, after being handed a season 2 renewal in May.

One of the biggest surprises of the 2019-2020 television season is ABC’s “Stumptown.” The Cobie Smulders-led P.I. drama is somehow — and also quite easily — one of the best new shows of the season; the only series that’s really even challenged it for that position is HBO’s unbeatable “Watchmen.”

The reason this is such a surprise is that “Stumptown” is also a network television procedural, which automatically makes its quality up for debate even more than it would if it were a cable show. For good reason, network television is seen as the land of homogeny, where the same types of stories are told again and again, a point which also lends itself to the procedural genre.

But “Stumptown” is a genuine small screen miracle. It isn’t marred by either trying (and often failing) to be like “Lost” or telling the millionth cop or lawyer or doctor or firefighter story.

FX’s short-lived subscription service, FX+, which offered advertising-free versions of its programming to TV subscribers for an additional fee, is shutting down next month.

A notice on the company’s FX+ website says that it will no longer be available after Aug. 21, and according to FX’s customer-service site, FX+ subscriptions will automatically end on that date as well.

“On August 21st, FX Networks will cease operation of its direct-to-consumer nonlinear service, FX+,” the network said in a statement. “We deeply appreciate every fan of FX original series who subscribed to our service, and we are more optimistic and excited than ever about FX’s future as a key brand supporting the strategic priorities of The Walt Disney Company.”

The FX Plus subscription service is shutting down — another casualty of Disney’s acquisition of most of 21st Century Fox’s assets, and a move coming as FX’s content is set to get funneled into the Disney-controlled Hulu service.

FX Plus will no longer be available after Aug. 20, 2019, according to a notice on the service’s website. Initially launched two years ago with Comcast, FX Plus offered subscribers to the $5.99 monthly service ad-free access to more than 1,400 episodes of FX programming, including “Atlanta,” “American Horror Story,” “Damages,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “The Shield,” “Sons of Anarchy” and “Terriers.” FX Plus later added Cox Communications as an affiliate.

Current seasons of FX Networks’ original series will continue to air on the FX and Fxx linear channels and be available for “limited-time on-demand viewing” in the FXNow app and online at FXNetworks.com through pay-tv subscriber authentication, according to the cable programmer.

FX dug into the house of Lannister and the garage of the Sunshine Cab Company for Gone Hollywood pilot.

What is west of Westeros, Arya Stark asked in the Game of Thrones finale as she headed for desinations unknown. Among other things, Tinseltown. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who played Jaime Lannister, and Jonathan Pryce, who played the High Sparrow, will head west in the pilot for FX's upcoming drama Gone Hollywood, according to Variety.

The series will follow a group of 1980-era talent agents who form their own agency and fly in the face of accepted practices, changing way movies are sold forever.

This will be Coster-Waldau's first TV project since HBO's Sunday night pheonomenon ended. He will next be seen in Brian De Palma's feature Domino, which hits theaters May 31. Coster-Waldau, who will be playing a character named Jack DeVoe, will be joined by Lola Kirke...

John Magaro, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Lola Kirke are among the actors set to star in FX’s ’80s Hollywood drama pilot “Gone Hollywood,” the network announced on Wednesday.

Written by “Terriers” creator Ted Griffin and produced by Scott Rudin, “Gone Hollywood” centers on a group of talent agents in 1980 who defect from an old-guard percentery to found their own, which skyrockets to industry dominance, disrupting the business and changing movies forever.

Magaro (The Umbrella Academy), Coster-Waldau (“Game of Thrones”) and Lola Kirke (“Mozart in the Jungle”) will star in the pilot alongside Ben Schnetzer, Jonathan Pryce and Judd Hirsch.
