According to news reports and the official wikipedia page for this movie, Rebel Moon is the first part of a duology that its producers and director hope to expand into a much larger Intellectual Property. Also, much like the Avatar sequels by James Cameron and Peter Jackson's two Middle-Earth trilogies, the first two Rebel Moon productions have been filmed back-to-back.

Originally, 'Rebel Moon' was an idea that director Zack Snyder pitched to George Lucas and his production company (LucasFilm LTD.) for a potential sequel to 'Return of the Jedi'. However, George Lucas eventually sold his company to Walt Disney Pictures before retiring from film-making himself and the original plans for Zack Snyder's film were scrapped.

While much of the original film's details are shrouded in mystery, one thing is true and that is that the main plot of the film would be inspired by Akira Kurosawa's iconic period epic 'Seven Samurai' where a poor farming community hires warriors to protect itself from invaders and looters. This is ironic, since one of the major inspirations for 'Star Wars' originally was another period epic by Akira Kurosawa: 'The Hidden Fortress'.

It is essentially inspired mainly by Seven Samurai, Star Wars and Warhammer 40,000.

The cast of this movie is extensive and impressive, but so far it appears that only three of the cast members have worked with director Zack Snyder before: Jena Malone, Ingvar Sigurdsson, and Ray Fisher.

Jena Malone has previously worked with Snyder on Batman v Superman and Sucker Punch while Sigurdsson and Fisher had roles in both versions of Justice League.

UPDATE: As of October 12th, 2023, it has been discovered that Ray Porter and Richard Cetrone have also been cast in the upcoming production. Both have played major villains in Snyder's recent productions with Ray Porter playing the lord of Apokalips, Darkseid/Uxas Khan, in the Snyder Cut of Justice League and Richard Cetrone playing the Alpha Zombie leader who is named Zeus in Army of the Dead.
