"Dominique: Bullets, Bluster, and Brain Off - A Masterclass in Predictable Mayhem"

Film Review: Dominique (2025)

Dominique is the kind of action thriller that doesn't shy away from its roots-it's loud, fast, and packed with the kind of relentless, no-frills action that will either have you grinning or groaning, depending on your expectations. This modestly-budgeted film promises exactly what it delivers: a barrage of bullets, an explosion of noise, and a plot as predictable as the sunrise. If you go in expecting a complex narrative or a twisty, cerebral story, you'll quickly be disappointed. But if you're after a no-holds-barred, action-packed ride, then Dominique is likely to satisfy.

The plot is familiar, perhaps even stale, featuring a lone hero seeking revenge in a city rife with crime and corruption. The characters are little more than one-dimensional stereotypes, and the dialogue isn't exactly destined for the history books. But let's be clear-Dominique isn't pretending to be anything it's not. It's a straightforward action film that never tries to reinvent the wheel, but certainly does its best to keep the wheel spinning at full speed.

Critics, as expected, have panned the film for being formulaic and predictable, with audiences on IMDb marking it down for exactly the same reasons: bullets, noise, and a lack of surprises. However, I find myself more generous in my assessment. In a genre that often seems weighed down by pretensions or overcomplicated storylines, Dominique feels like a breath of fresh air. It's unapologetically what it is, and for that, it deserves a little credit. If you're in the mood to turn your brain off for 90 minutes, watch some bullets fly, and enjoy some decent stunts, this film might just hit the spot.

Sure, the acting isn't award-winning, and the plot isn't going to make anyone think deeply, but if you're not expecting Citizen Kane and just want a bit of entertainment, Dominique delivers exactly that. If you happen to doze off halfway through, don't worry-you haven't missed much, but you'll still have had a decent, if unremarkable, time. A perfect choice for when you just need a quick, mindless action fix.

Rating: 6/10-A solid, if predictable, action movie that doesn't promise more than it can deliver.

Deserved better reviews.

Action/violence on the level of a movie from the franchise of "taken" or "john wick." I expected it would be one hand on the popcorn, the other on the fast forward button. But no. The crooked cops, the burned out soldier of fortune, finding a cause worth risking her life. There are twists, you won't see coming.

Fun. Worth giving it a shot. 6.5. It drops a little because its obviously not a big budget, slick Hollywood production. That was a negative, but after 15 minutes, that ceasaes to be an issue. When it ended, I actually wondered if this could find its way to Dominique II? Probably not....but think of all the crappy movies that have seen a 2nd iteration.

She can do better

Embroidered on the real drama of poor Colombians, this film bring some serious issues into question. It's half way between a B series banal and violent flick and a real tension filled, well done cinematic action movie. You may or may not want to watch it, but there's something else that must be noted: Oksana Orlan has a huge potential for dramatic roles. She is very expressive as an actress, it pays to have her in action movies but she can do so much more. The credibility of the story is forced beyond natural, in terms of physics, ballistics and tactical warfare, the human nature is touching the extremes but, hey, this is Columbia and all bets are off. Oksana stays somehow above all this and shines in a strange, promising way. Do they plan a sequel? She would better step on acting, with less shooting. I gave it a 6, in anticipation.

Will watch it again

This movie is as poignant as it is violent. The action will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time while you become attached to the characters. The director really pulled that off. It does leave you wanting to know a lot more about Dominique and her past. I assume this was done to make us want a sequel! The actress is great. Her anger is so genuine that you feel it too. The landscape looked so good on film that I now want to visit Colombia. There are pivotal action scenes that made me wonder how the filming was done so well because I doubt there were tons of effects or cgi. Definitely worth a second watch.

Meh...

Nothing in the movie mattered. You should go do anything else with your time. Literally anything else would be better than the time spent watching this. From beginning to end, nothing changed. Still don't know anything about the protagonist. People died. Nobody cared

There was no character growth. There was no progress. There was nothing worth watching here.

Stories are supposed to have a point. There was no point to this, other than dead bodies. I guess if one counted the bodies hitting the floor maybe there was a tiny point. But that's it.

Did any of the dialog matter? Nope. Did any of the action matter, except to further the body count? Nope.

Pointless violence with pointless death.

4 stars for the potential. Failed in many aspects

This movie had the potential to be a standout revenge thriller, but unfortunately, it falls short in several key areas. The lead actor delivers a solid performance, showing promise in the role, but the film's direction fails to capitalize on that strength. The supporting characters, on the other hand, often overact and can be grating, detracting from the film's overall tone.

The ending is especially disappointing. Revenge movies are defined by their climactic finales, that moment of catharsis and justice, but here, it feels like the filmmakers ran out of time-or budget-before they could deliver a satisfying resolution. The lack of a powerful, emotional payoff is a major letdown for fans of the genre.

That said, there's one bright spot: Oksana Orlan. She shows real potential as an action star, and with a stronger supporting cast and a larger budget, she could truly shine in this genre.

Ultimately, this movie misses the mark, but with a few key improvements, it could have been something special.

Good old styled action fun...

When I stumbled upon this 2024 action thriller titled "Dominique", I was intrigued. Sure, I had never heard about the movie, but there was just something about the cover that worked for me.

The storyline in the movie was pretty straightforward, sort of in the spirit of the action movies of the 1980s and 1990s, where it is one man, well in this case woman, against a large group of highly-trained professionals. I will say that writers Michael S. Ojeda and Oksana Orlan, with the latter also starring in the movie, actually put together an enjoyable and entertaining enough script. I was adequately entertained throughout the course of the 100 minutes that the movie ran for. Sure, the narrative was sort of predictable, up to the end, where director Michael S. Ojeda takes the movie and gives it a rather unforeseen twist. I liked that.

The acting performances in the movie were fair, but leading actress Oksana Orlan sort of put on a performances with a wooden face, showing little or no emotions. I hope that the character was written to be that way, otherwise it was a lousy acting performance. While I was not familiar with actors Maurice Compte and Sebastián Carvajal, they really spruced up the movie with their performances.

There is a good amount of action to supplement the rather basic and straightforward narrative, so that worked out well enough.

I have to say, though, that "Dominique" is a movie that certainly is watchable once, but it has absolutely zero replay vale to it. If you enjoy action thrillers, give director Michael S. Ojeda's 2024 movie "Dominique" a chance if you have the opportunity.

My rating of "Dominique" lands on a six out of ten stars.

Could have been great

This low-budget action/revenge flick could have been great. A female JOHN WICK even. The plot is simple and the bad guys are pure evil, which would be fine if there was more thought put into the action.

Star Oksana Orlan does what she can with a limited script that doesn't give her much to do besides kill people and look exhausted despite being seemingly invulnerable to any serious harm.

There's some decent violence and gore but the CGI gunshot wound spatters look pathetic and fake and take you right out of the film. I hate when producers cheap out and choose that over far more realistic and practical squibs. It always looks cheap and takes the film down a notch.

Overall, DOMINIQUE isn't boring but it could have been so much better.

Oh my god, this It's so bad it's funny

That actress cannot act at all the whole script was stupid. The whole idea of this movie was ridiculous. I mean come on do you guys really care about anybody in this movie at all? Even the stupid family? I just can't believe crap like this still gets made I can't believe any actor would look at this script and go yeah I'll do it.

She disgusting how much bad crap is on TV. I mean the gun fights were so silly and fake. The blood was fake. Everybody was Cliché and overreacting to Everything. It was just so bad. It's like you didn't even care about one single person in this show.

Not even close to John Wick.

Terrible

The plot of Dominique is generic and seems rushed. The script is basic and boring. This movie checks all of the boxes of things that a good action film should have, but the execution is bad. The intimate scene in the beginning is rushed and awkward. The action scenes makes no sense. She shouldn't have been able to use a human shield, bullets go through people. She walks up to bad guys and takes their guns away with no technique, as if they had the strength of toddlers. It seems this movie tried to imitate the gun-fu from better films but didn't try hard enough. John Wick is far fetched, but Keanu Reeves and the choreographers put in a lot of work to make the action convincing and exciting, something the cast and crew of Dominique failed at completely.

A Violent Suprise

I was expecting a simple bloodbath with bad acting and flimsy plot and came away impressed by the story, the filmmaking, and (especially) the acting.

Oksana Orlan may have been channeling her inner Ivan Drago but you can see the warmth beneath her steely facade. The other cast rises to her level, particularly Alanna De La Rossa, who knocks it out of the park as an annoying older teenage sister.

The filmmaking was remarkably slick for what was undoubtedly a micro-budget, shot on location in Columbia. The action sequences were top notch and it definitely delivered on the expected bloodbath.

The surprise was the nuanced script (kudos again to Ms Orlan who co-wrote alongside her director Michael Ojeda), which delivers complex relationships between the sprays of bullets. And there are a lot of bullets... lotsa lotsa bullets. And blood. Lotsa blood. Like a bath-worth of blood. (I'm hoping the sequel is Dominique seeking out talented therapists for some deep trauma work... maybe a medicine journey or some EMDR.)

Actually one of the best low budget action flics around!

I have just watched this!

And I want to tell you people!

If you like action packed movies and you can forgive low budget issues - you will be satisfied!

What is more important in this kind of movies is the main heroine.

This one is really good and fits perfectly.

Lots of blood - actually bloodbath.

Acting is not really perfect.

More to this there are very many poor quality stuff here...... Sound is poor.

Special effects not really fantastic.

Hand to hand combat....you name it...

YET IT IS SO DAMN FRESH!!!!

And more:

you know this kind of movies. You know what would happen yet you watch it with pleasure.

I think this is because of:
  • script
  • characters
  • editing
  • not pretending to be Hollywood stuff - just some cheap flick... with idea....

I loved this movie....

The main heroine is bad, mean and kicks ass. And is so sexy...... in her brutality.

thrilling action and adrenaline-pumping moments.

"Dominique" delivers a fantastic story filled with thrilling action and adrenaline-pumping moments. The pacing keeps you on edge, and the cinematography captures the intensity beautifully. However, while the film excels in excitement, some aspects of realism take a backseat.

For instance, the idea of walking from Guajira to Boyacá in a single day is about as believable as trekking from the Las Vegas desert to Miami in the same timeframe. It stretches logic to the point of distraction, making it hard to fully immerse in the story.

Overall, Dominique is an entertaining ride with solid action, but the unrealistic details leave us scratching our heads.

The female equalizer.

This reminded me a lot of Denzel Washington's equalizer character and how he gets involved in situations that he just happens to witness and takes care of it. The same happens here. We are introduced to "Dominique" in a crashed aircraft with a mysterious crate all chained up. What happens next is next to awesome as she systematically takes out most everyone in her way to attempt to protect a family from a totally corrupt police department and a very powerful cartel, the action is awesome as well as the choreography fight scenes and gun play. Lots of violence, gore, some sexual situations and brief nudity, some foul language, may be a bit too intense for the squeamish, definitely not for young kiddos. Will see again and hopefully there will be many sequels, she makes for a possible female John wick. Nothing questionable, lots of action. You'll love what's inside the crate. Enjoy!

Adrenaline & A** KIcking

This film delivered on the promise of the poster, the proof of concept for an action film. It's an impulse buy at the multiplex, looks cool, you go for it. But we've all been disappointed so many times right? But not here... We get a really talented cast (lead Oksana Orlan really shines) and some great supporting roles too. It's also Action with a capital "A", overplayed at times, yes, but hello, it's an Action Film. I also love that they made the effort to film in Colombia (and use some great Colombian actors!) instead of shooting in Georgia and taking the easy way out. Don't overthink, enjoy!

Awesome Action

" This Film Was Action Packed From Start To Finish " Oksana Is The New Female Action Star, She Brings A Female Version Cross Of Rambo And John Wick. The Plot Was Great, The Crew And Cast Did An Outstanding Job. In A Good Action Film, There Are Four Main Reasons That Makes It Special And Catches Our Attention, That Is Guns, Explosions, Fighting And The Plot Itself. And This Film Had All Four Along With Other Fast Moving Scenes. The Stunts And Hand To Hand Combat Were Also Superb, With Unexpected Twist This Was A Great Edge Of The Seat Movie. I Definitely Give A Strong Recommendation To Watch. Two Thumbs Up!

Heart-pounding, tear-jerking actioner with a great female lead.

Wow! I watched this just to see Chase Coleman, who plays a minor but key role and looks terrific shirtless. However, I was completely committed after the first 2-3 minutes. This is a sniper/revenge film, usually my least favorite genre, but shot or written more from a female perspective. Family drama plus a lot of bullets. I thought the action was overall made more believable than most Hollywood actioners. The acting and family were totally believable. I lost myself into the film, which NEVER happens for me in this type of movie. If you like EXTREMELY STONG violent female leads, see this film. If you like gun play were dozens of evil characters are shot, watch this film. If you like Chase Coleman, watch this film!
