A movie followup to Kidô senshi Gundam Seed Destiny (2004) was first announced in 2006 and the script was finished in 2008. Chiaki Morosawa's health however, had been declining and the film plans sat on the shelf for years. Morosawa's death in 2016 made the film seem unlikely until plans were revived as a part of a multi media project to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the original Kidô senshi Gundam Seed (2002) anime.
This film marks the reunion of music group See-Saw, (members Yuki Kajiura and Chiaki Ishikawa) the first new song by the duo in 20 years.
Trevor Devall who was one of the English voice actors from the original English Dub of Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny returns as the English voice of Mu La Flaga. He is the only voice actor from the original Ocean Group dub to return for this film, as Tom Wayland replaced him for the HD Remaster of both anime series.
