Green Day headlined this year’s Coachella and performed a set that was all punk and extremely rock. The band may not have performed its best set at this year’s legendary music festival, but its political messaging seems to take precedence over the quality of the performance. Frontman Billy Joe Armstrong did not shy away from getting topical and picking sides.
While performing their hit rock song American Idiot, Green Day changed the lyrics to reflect the current political climate of the world and the USA. Apart from talking about the war in Gaza and the affected Palestinians, Armstrong also changed a key lyric to also reflect his opinion on the current President Donald Trump and his policies.

After nearly 40 years, Green Day is still using their music as a megaphone to protest the world’s injustices.
While headlining Saturday at Coachella, the punk band used their 2004 single ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ to call attention to the suffering of Palestinian children amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
“Runnin’ away from pain, like the kids from Palestine / Tales from another broken home,” sang frontman Billie Joe Armstrong in the lyric that was originally, “Runnin’ away from pain when you’ve been victimized.”
Last month, he altered the same track, singing, “Am I retarded, or am I just J.D. Vance?” Instead of the vice president’s name, the original lyric asks “am I just overjoyed?”
The American Idiot artists are not new to making a statement with their music, using the title track from their 2004 album to call out Donald Trump during a 2023 New Year’s Eve broadcast.

The lyric change came shortly after Armstrong once again asserted he’s “not a part of the Maga agenda” while singing “American Idiot.” He also gave a brief speech saying, “Don’t you want Elon Musk to shut the fuck up? Don’t you want Donald Trump to shut the fuck up?”
Also during the “Jesus of Suburbia” performance, Green Day expressed their support for Ukraine,...

Pablo Hasél’s Arrest Ignited Free Speech Protests in Spain. Years Later, the Rapper Is Still in Jail
Pablo Hasél didn’t want to go to prison. But by 2018, the Catalan rapper had ruffled the coiffed feathers of the Spanish monarchy with unapologetic, rebellious music denouncing perceived injustice — so much so that he’d been handed a two-year prison sentence by Spain’s National Court. Although an appeals judge reduced the term to nine months, Hasél still didn’t think it was right. Neither did a lot of people in Spain.
The sentence — for a song, music video, and 64 tweets — was partially for “injurias a la Corona,” or insulting and slandering the monarchy.

“I got this,” Noah Centineo’s rookie CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks tells his boss Walter Nyland who sends him to “go save the day” in the trailer for the upcoming second season of Netflix’s spy thriller series The Recruit, which premieres Jan. 30.
Set to a Korean cover of Green Day’s “American Idiot,” the trailer reveals more about the Season 2 premise about Owen being “pulled into a life-threatening espionage situation in South Korea, only to realize that the bigger threat just might be coming from inside the Agency.”
Nathan Fillion’s CIA Director Alton West warns that “they are going to spill every secret we busted our nuts to keep secret,” with Owen and Co. given “48 hours to stop an all-out war.”
The trailer, which you can watch above, also introduces Season 2 series regular Teo Yoo as Jang Kyun Kim who partners with Centineo’s Owen for some Rush Hour-style buddy action sequences.

Each week, we handpick a selection of stories to give you a snapshot of trends, updates, business moves, and more from around the creator industry. This week, Kai Cenat’s Twitch sub-a-thon has stirred up drama, and the presidential election has sent some stocks soaring.
Creator commotion
The unwitting star of Kai Cenat’s Mafiathon is Halle Bailey’s infant son. The younger half of Chloe x Halle was initially incensed that ex-partner Ddg brought their child Halo onto Cenat’s blockbuster stream, though she later said she “overreacted.” Halle may be ahead of her time; there’s a lot of talk right now about the morality of children’s on-camera appearances.
Casey Neistat’s David Dobrik doc may never see the light of day. Neistat is conflicted about a project that started as a celebration of Dobrik’s career but was complicated by numerous controversies orbiting the former Vlog Squad member.

It’s been 20 years since Green Day’s American Idiot first arrived, and the seminal pop-punk album is still striking a chord with fans worldwide, as evidenced by the title track reaching a significant milestone: surpassing 1 billion streams on Spotify.
The achievement occurred this past week as Green Day is on the road with their “Saviors Tour,” which is not only supporting their new album, Saviors, but celebrates the 30th anniversary of Dookie and the 20th anniversary of American Idiot, with the band performing both albums in full at each stop.

Lyrically, “American Idiot” itself speaks to the turbulent socio-political climate of America in the 21st century, referencing national tension, propaganda, a country controlled by the media, and more. To that end, it’s little surprise that the track has remained a beloved anthem. Now, it joins “Basket Case” as Green Day’s second song to pass the 1 billion mark,...
