his voice

Onyx the Fortuitous (Andrew Bowser) is a loser and a follower of Satanist Bartok the Great. He is excited to be one of five fans selected by Bartok to join him in a ritual to raise a demon.

I don't know anything about Andrew Bowser. Apparently, he is famous for this character. It is a character for specific taste. At first, I like his loserdom. I accept his voice as a part of that character, but that does wear thin after awhile. There is a whine to it that can be annoying. Then something happens to me. I actually started to appreciate his commitment to the bit and felt sorry for the character. I can see both sides of the criticism.

Why are you..talking like THISSSS?

For a horror comedy, the movie really works well, some of the effects are really fun and the story is cheesy and campy enough to land this movie in the SBIG section.

One gripe i have is the way Onyx the Fortuitous talks.

I am not familiar with the Actor so if this is his reagular way of speaking i appologize.

IF it is not. Then oooh boy, is it bad, i dont mind Hammed up performances (its a SBIG movie, ham comes with the cheese)

The actor playing him is not bad, he works well in the style of the movie, hell al the actors give their best and sometimes delicious hammy performances that makes it look a fun friends stage performance on the silver screen.

So at the end of the ride, the movie is a blast to watch as a movie to laugh at and kinda make fun off.

Watched at Arbys

Ive seen Andrew's onyx character before. Searching through youtube I had run across "arbys guy" and found the video mildly amusing. When it comes to comedy, it takes a special kind to get me to laugh. ( not unlike people who claim they don't scare easy from horror movies)

Onyx is very funny and I LOL at many of his lines in this film. The rest of the cast was great and I would like to see where Andrew can take this. The effects were cheesy but worked within the context of the movie. I apologize for the review being all over the place but I recommend this for people who enjoy either Andrew's videos or have an open mind for horror comedy that delivers big on a low budget!

GREAT MOVIE - FUN

This movie was such a cute movie. I can't even describe it. Andrew Bowser who played Onyx the Fortuitous did such an amazing job. He made the movie. I watched this movie in the background while I was working, and it was simple to follow even not watching 100% what was on the screen. It was also nice to see Terrence C. Carson. Who played Mr. Duke. I loved him on the TV sitcom Living single.

This movie is not going to be for everyone. I'm sure some people will not connect with this style of humor, or the character of Onyx at all.

If you like corny dad jokes, 80s movie, people talking strangely then you will like this movie, and I will recommend it.

Campy, cheesy, weird and super fun

I loved this movie. Mostly because I love the Onyx character, and I think the way he is incorporated as a main character in this horror/comedy is fantastic.

This is a grade-A b-movie. Like, it's not good. But I think they knew it wasn't going to be a fantastic movie when making it, so they were able to lean into the punches a little and I think it worked really well.

What are you going to do with a film where the protagonist is viscerally awkward and weird? You're going make it weird and fun as possible! So that's what they did. Decent storytelling, decent acting, good world building, consistent effects, and some clever writing.

Like this is the best outcome anyone can expect from an internet meme character. I'm happy they made this and I want to see more from them. I would casually watch this in show form.

On-par with Tucker and Dale vs. Evil.

Trying way too hard

There's a big difference between saying funny things and trying to say things in a funny way. The lead actor (who I guess is also behind this movie) apparently thinks that if he says his lines in what he thinks is a funny way, that they will be funny.

In actuality, if he'd delivered the same lines completely straight, it might've worked. This is a perfect example of having a great idea, but not having the acting chops to pull it off creatively. I understand the notion of wanting to be the main guy in something that you yourself created, but sometimes you've got to hand over the reins to someone else.

At first I thought maybe he was just putting on this delivery for the opening bit (a taped video), but then it continued when he was talking to his parents, so I gave up on the flick at that point.

Maybe some people will enjoy it, but for me it was just plain hokey.

Fun watch but obnoxious lead actor/character

I watched this without knowing anything about it and found it to be well made and fun with a good cast and great practical effects.

The only thing I didn't like was the protagonist, which is a shame. I understand he's supposed to be awkward but right from the bat he's extremely annoying and very unlikeable, his acting is too much over the top, and the character doesn't improve or develop in any way through the story.

The rest of the cast is not so bad, but feel like they're just in there as a filler.

What really made me watch and enjoy the whole film was Jeffrey Combs and Olivia Taylor Dudley. They are the high points and it's worth watching for the two of them.

This film had a lot more potential, It could have been rated higher if the main protagonist was more likeable (not such a loser), or he developed and grew in some positive way through the story. Or if the actor played it normal/straight, and not like a caricature.

The humor is good for a chuckle, but it's sometimes too childish. If it had been straight or dry humor like in the original Ghostbusters, it would have been amazing.

You'll either love it or hate it but if comedy horror is your niche, you'll probably love it

There is a specific level of silly and satirical that a good horror comedy has to hit while still maintaining a good enough storyline for there to be stakes and characters fleshed out enough for you to care about them. It can be a difficult tightrope to walk.

This hits that level right on the mark. That being said, it's not for everyone. It's for the kind of audience that quotes viva la dirt league skits. If your friends just look at you funny when you do this and enjoyed the latest disney star wars shows, this movie probably isn't for them.

The only reason that I'm only giving it 9/10 is that I felt that the ending was rushed and seemed fairly anticlimactic compared to the buildup toward it. There isn't anything specific I can put my finger on, but it just had a different feel than the rest of the movie, as if the ending fell victim to a budget or time constraint.

This movie is an excellent addition to its genre and I hope you are in the group of people who enjoy it.

Before There Was Autism...There Was Onyx The Fortuitous.

Onyx The Fortuitous is a wonderfully cheesy, low budget, horror comedy, created by Andrew Bowser.

A creator who is best known for his short horror films- and work on youtube- in which he plays a series of hilariously goofy, endearingly annoying, characters...inspired by the likes of Sacha Baren Cohen, Jack Black, and Tom Green.

Meaning, not only did he write and direct this film...he also plays the main character Marcus aka Onyx The Fortuitous.

An autistic fast food worker, who is obsessed with his childhood hero...satanist, Bartok The Great.

Thus, when he wins a contest to visit Bartok's home- with a select group of other individuals- he hops on the oppourtunity.

Unaware that Bartok plans to use them to raise an ancient demon...by harvesting their souls.

Bartok claims they are each the reincarnation of a roleplayer in the story of a grimoire he possesses.

Luring them into his trap, under the promise of immortality.

Until, Onyx unwittingly uncovers the ruse, after witnessing the murder of one of his fellow visitors.

Which puts the rest of the group on a path to play Bartok, before he plays them...

Bowser's characters generally have an annoyingly innocent charm to them...and Onyx- a character he developed for a youtube series in 2020- is no different.

So...seeing him get a chance to work them into a feature length film for the first time, is quite the treat!

Because not only is this a complete and utter cheesefest.

It also has some really cool Henson-style creatures...inspired by some of his favourite horror and comedy icons.

Like the ghouls- which look like a combination of the monsters from They Live! And Mars Attacks!; while the monster-in-a-box seems to act as a reference to the infamous Spaulding Gray.

Is it a masterpiece?

Of course not.

It is, however, a youth friendly horror-comedy on par with the likes of Tenacious D And The Pick Of Destiny, for example.

I, for one, was entertained.

And if you aren't too...then you might be taking life a little too seriously.

Because this is great fun!

6.5 out of 10.

Rough Main Character, but good side characters/special effects.

The Main Character, Onyx is.. well, an amalgamation of all the worst nerd tropes, played up very high. It is unrelenting. There are few good points to his character.

Everyone else is great. Jeffry Combs is having a blast. The secondary characters are fun, and charismatic. The special effects are great, you get some great puppets, and great creatures in there. I wish there had been more practical effects!

The plot is very simple, Markus, who calls himself Onyx the Fortuitous sends in a video to a Bartok, who is a master of Satanism. Bartok chooses him and four others to help him perform a ritual. Onyx and the others start to get curious about the ritual, and the more they find out, the more dangerous it becomes.

It's not hard to follow. The biggest obstacle is how obnoxious the main character is.

80's Throwback with More than Nostalgia

Hubie, everyone.

This movie was a ton of fun. If you're into 80's horror comedy, this is for you. Like a Willy Wonka for Satanists of sorts. I was wondering how the character of Onyx would translate to long form content like this, but it worked well.

All of the performances were spectacular. Especially from Rivkah Reyes and Olivia Taylor Dudley. Everyone knew what kind of world they were building in this movie and they played the parts wonderfully.

This isn't going to be for everyone. I'm sure some folks will not connect with this style of humor, or the character of Onyx at all. I think the people who do connect will absolutely love it. I'm glad Sundance did online screenings so I could catch this early.

Also, any movie that scores Ralph Ineson's amazing voice is always worth a watch.

Gonkers.

GOOD MOVIE - BAD LEAD ACTOR

I liked this movie except for the lead actor Andrew Bowser who almost sinks the movie all by himself. He is also the director and the writer. Maybe he should stick to directing and leave the acting to someone else. Every time a good scene was being shown Mr. Bowser started acting his part and ruined the scene. If someone else had been cast as the lead actor I would have rated this movie a lot higher than the 6 stars I am giving it. The only reason I am giving this movie a 6 stars at all is because of the other actors who are doing a great job in their parts. This movie is entertaining and I wasn't bored one bit. Again it's a good movie with a bad lead actor.

Ruined by the lead characters mannerisms.

This would have been mildly entertaining if it was not for the lead characters silly behaviour. Mainly the ridiculous way he speaks.

I also feel that when a writer, who is also the director and the lead actor makes a movie - that it is bound to fail. I mean who does that?

With nobody other than yourself to give input, that person would need to be perfection.

Alas he is not and the movie fails.

For 600k and for what he did achieve with it, is impressive, as a film it simply does not stand up, mainly because the leads character is just too annoying.

I also see a lot of 9 and 10 star reviews. Let me tell you,.anyone who give this a score anywhere near that, has to be involved in the production or severely biased in some way.

Everything about this movie is 10/10, except the main character.

Really, really liked this movie so it's weird for me to say this but if the main character "Onyx" had not been a thing, or been played by someone else, this movie would have been a solid 10 for me.

It's just great. Great characters (except of course the main guy), great sets, great practical effects, lots of great one liners and visual effects, great music and a solid call back to the old 80s cheesy horror movies.

I had no idea who Andrew Bowser was before I saw this film, or any of the backstory behind the Kickstarter, I came across this movie kind of like grabbing a movie off the shelf at the old mom & Pop video store, it had a cool poster so I checked it out.

If you are an actual fan of Andrew Bowser and are familiar with his work, this movie is probably going to be amazing for you. If you are going in blind, or are reading this review, I would say YES watch this movie if you are into 80's Horror Cheese, the main dude was a downer for me but that's obviously just my opinion. The movie is fun and worth a watch!

Could've been a hidden gem, but his damn voice

Movie had some really cool set pieces and some moments I generally thought were really funny. I love the little horror-comedy Shaun of the dead-esque genre. Had some cool effects and was just a campy good time. But the lead actors voice is so atrocious. Like I don't understand what they were trying to do. Literally everytime he talks it just details the whole story. You can convey someone is a loser without having him talk like that. Just really honestly sunk the film it was THAT bad. When the movie started I thought to myself "surely he's not gonna talk like this the whole time? Like he's gonna become not a loser along the journey and gain confidence and he won't talk like this..." no he talks like that the whole time and ruins what otherwise was a nice fun movie. Give it a chance if you can bear his speaking.

Just one major flaw...

There was a great deal to like about this movie. I came to it quite randomly and when I saw Jeffrey Combs AND Barbara Crampton listed in the opening credits, knew I'd be in for something that would at least attempt to make homage to great classic horror comedies. In that, I wasn't disappointed. I was most reminded of Shaun of the Dead and Army of Darkness, and thought, "This director is spot on!" BUT (and that's a big but) I had real trouble watching Bowser, the actor. Absolutely everything else about the movie was absolute joy, but Onyx himself was a wee bit intense for me, and I found the profanity a bit unnecessary as well. There was a time a kids' movie could discuss virginity (the first "Hocus Pocus" does so) but now it might be a touchy subject. I think kids would absolutely ADORE the movie and the Onyx character himself, and even the virginity plot might sneak through as "never had a girlfriend." I hope Bowser keeps creating but, like Paul Reubens, he might find his crossover audience far bigger and more lucrative than this film permits.

Somewhat mildly entertaining, but it wasn't funny.

It's a bold move to stake your project around a one-note gimmick character. That note NEEDS to land or the entire thing falls apart.

This one completely falls apart.

Neckbeard mall-ninja cringe comedy is completely doable but too many of Onyx's jokes were long non-sequitur hillbilly tangents that were not funny. I felt like I was anticipating something, anything funny to happen until the movie ended.

Bartok was the only character that achieved some level of actual humor. The other characters were barely even attempting comedy, to give space for the comedy star of Onyx, but since Onyx wasn't funny, it was like nobody was doing anything.

It wasn't offensively bad- but it falls into the two worst possible categories for a comedy. A) Not funny, and B) completely mediocre.

For Horror Fans!

Extremely thankful my friend showed me the trailer, because otherwise I would have never heard of this movie. He initially said the trailer made him lose interest, but mine peaked from the use of truly wonderful animatronics.

My friends and I watch a lot of horror films, and especially in the month of October. We couldn't decide on anything actually scary, so I convinced them to watch the trailer, and we all thought we'd give it a shot.

Within the first ten minutes, I knew we'd made the right choice. The lead evoked our childhood and preteen selves, both in a way that was comedically cringe and utterly endearing. Sure, he has a vocal intonation that might not be for everybody, but maybe it's our millennial sense of humour that we were already parroting lines back to each other.

Shout out to the costuming and makeup departments, because the first shot of our ensemble tells you each of their archetypes in a way that blends so well in the universe. You might think that Onyx has a personality that hogs the spotlight, but worry not - casting knew what they were doing. (As an aside, I have never felt so seen and represented before Mack, down to their stupid-but-cute little sunglasses.)

I'm not going to go into the plot, but there are plenty of references throughout the film for horror fans. Not so clunky that it takes away from the plot, but perfectly interwoven into each scene. Very diagetic - even the brief musical interlude, of which myself and my friends were also big fans. Also some unexpected but touching moments of pathos thrown in there, and I'm a huge fan of funny things that surprise you with a bit of a punch to the gut.

Tropes, animatronics, corny jokes - the movie is camp! If you don't like camp, you probably won't like this movie, and I'm definitely not gonna hold that against the movie. Seeing other reviews, I'm just sat here thinking, "Nah. Nah nah, nah. Nah. This isn't a bad movie at all, these people just don't like the genre!" Idunno. Or maybe it just caters more to the millennial sense of humour.

If you only like scary horror, try Caveat. (Another recent watch that I thoroughly enjoyed!) But this was fun, I'm so happy we decided to watch it, and surely it's more entertaining with a group but I won't assume a solo viewing wouldn't also be a good time. I'm probably going to watch it again tonight, in all honesty.

His Voice...

I thought Jeffrey Combs might be the saving grace, but I still couldn't make it past the 20-minute mark.

The actor playing Onyx decided to pattern his speech after a well-known character from Kids in the Hall: Bruce McCullough's Gavin.

He basically does an impression of this character the entire time. It's important to note that the Gavin sketches are only like 5 minutes long. Any more then that, and it's unbearably grating to hear.

I'm a huge Kids in the Hall fan, as I'm sure this actor must be, but d*mn if his sustained impression didn't make the movie completely unwatchable. Genuinely couldn't take it anymore and had to turn it off.

Bot reviews galore

You know the movie sucks when it has to rely on dozens and dozens of reviews by bot accounts giving it a glowing nine or ten star rating.

This movie gets one star for Barbara Crampton and one star for Jeffrey Combs. I'd give it a half star for the goth looking woman if I could because I think she's attractive.

The main character's ridiculous way of speaking starts to wear thin and get on the nerves extremely quickly to the point where you want to punch him in the mouth. It's not funny. He's not funny. This movie is not funny.

That saying about fools and their money is true given that this was Kickstarter backed.

Feels like a Rejected Adult Film from Nickelodeon

Saw this at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival

"Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls" is a story about fledgling occultist Onyx and a group of worshipers attend a once-in-a-lifetime ritual at their idol BARTOK THE GREAT'S mansion. Based on Andrew Bowser's character named "Onyx the Fortuitous", the film is meant to be a throwback of cheesy 80s horror film and fun non-serious halloween film. I haven't seen much of Bowser's work besides his work in "The Mother of Invention" which I thought was pretty good. However, this film was painfully awful and annoying to watch.

It's clear the film is trying to be non-serious but the problem is that the film's humor and writing feels extremely forced as if it was trying too hard to be funny which ultimately ends up being pretty cringy. The story feels like something from Scooby-Doo but instead of being clever, it's filled with unfunny humor, extremely annoying characters and an all over the place scenario.

Most of the humor feels like humor you will find in terrible modern comedies about toilet humor that is annoying. None of the performances were good and were all pretty bad. I can not stand the character of Onyx the Fortuitous and every other character feels like flat out rejects from a terrible Nickelodeon show. It almost feels like I am watching something from terrible YouTuber films like "Space Cop, Smosh: The Movie, Airplane Mode, and Not Cool". The production designs feel cheap, the dialogue is purely awful, and it never was boring but I felt more annoyed rather than bored.

The only good aspect about this film were the special effects especially the uses of puppets and costumes were good. Overall, it was painful and highly unfunny. But better than most Youtuber films I guess.

Rating: D.

It's supposed to be awkward and cringey!!

This movie is TIGHT As a day-one backer, my name's in the credits, so trust me. People hating on Onyx are clueless. He's Andrew's brainchild, and the movie's gold. It's supposed to be awkward and cringey, that's the joke! If you don't get it, you're missing out. Andrew nailed it, and I can't wait for more.

For everyone that is hating on this movie because the main character is "unwatchable" then quit watching movies like this. Go back to marvel. I don't mean to have so much attitude but after reading to many reviews that are giving this a low score cause they didn't like Onyx is frustrating me because he is the HEART of this movie. He is the PLOT. He is the SHOW. He is the reason we backed this movie in the first place. So go and watch the original Onyx videos and then come back and watch this movie. Maybe you'll understand it a bit more. I Dunno.

Vanity project could have used less vanity

I love horror-comedy. Of all the genre mashups, it's one of my favorites, and I'm a sucker for all of them. Well... until now.

This film has a good premise, some funny setups, and occasionally clever dialogue. Not only that, but it's an excellent cast!

Well, almost.

Writer/Director/star Andrew Bowser made a huge mistake casting himself as the lead. Maybe his online bits are popular - and obviously he has a following that helped him fund this thing - but in a movie, he's simply awful. He's not funny, he has no feel for the comedic or dramatic timing needed in a film, and his bit gets old FAST.

Every time a scene gets going - and some start off great - he opens his mouth and ruins it. I wonder if the other actors felt as frustrated with him on set as I was watching it? If so, my heart goes out to them.

Maybe... I dunno, if it turned out his character only talked like this in his videos, or when he met new people? And it turned out he speaks normally when he's more comfortable or alone? Now, at least THAT would be giving us a reason to sit through this annoying creep's dialogue. But no. There's nothing here except the bit. And it's not a good one.

Three stars only for the good setup, promising directing chops, and good cast, all of which were wasted.
