I'm impressed with how well they captured the humour and spirit of the books

I borrowed the comics recently and immensely enjoyed rereading them for the first time in long time. They have such a unique style of humour and wit, and dialogue

To my surprise I noted this new show on Netflix and gave it a crack. I had low expectations.

Colour me deeply impressed with how well they captured the humour and spirit of the books. It's a wonderful piece of work, by toutatis!

It borrows from across the stories and captured all the individual personalities of the village well, without making any massive changes. That's an impressive feat given the comics were written in the 60s.

perfect !

Alain Chabat has done it again! Le combat des chefs is one of my favorite Asterix albums, and it's not only been perfectly adapted but also wonderfully enhanced for animation. The contemporary additions are perfectly in keeping with the original spirit, with subtle references to current events (Caesar could hardly look more like Putin). For me, it's a complete success, including in the animation of the characters, who seem to have stepped straight out of the comic-book panels. A superb piece of work, sublimated by the 5-star cast and remarkable graphics. Thank you for this moment of rediscovered childhood.

Asterix Returns in Triumph: Faithful, Fresh, and Full of Character

"Le Combat des Chefs" is one of the most iconic Asterix albums, and this new adaptation not only captures its essence flawlessly but elevates it with thoughtful enhancements for animation. The contemporary updates blend seamlessly with the original spirit, including subtle allusions to current events-Caesar's resemblance to Netanyahu and Putin, for instance, is unmistakable. For me, it's a complete triumph: the character animation feels as if the figures have stepped directly out of the comic's panels, while the colour palette pays a respectful homage to the 1989 adaptation of this album and Le Devin. It's a superb achievement, enriched by a stellar voice cast and outstanding visual design.

That said, I do feel that recent Asterix adaptations increasingly target a younger audience. Given that the original comic material often carries more mature themes and wit, I hope future projects will embrace that richness more fully. I'd love to see an adaptation aimed at adults-perhaps of Astérix chez les Helvètes or Les Lauriers de César. Or finally, a proper take on Le Tour de Gaule."

Not even Netflix can beat the Indomitable Gauls

Given the track record of Netflix productions lately I was a bit reserved about my expectations, but fear not, the Big Fight is Excellent!

It is probably just recency bias, but I can't recall when had I enjoyed an Asterix story as much. There is plenty of character development and a lot of various setups-payoffs that feel very satisfactory when you get to them. The plot evolves fairly logically with one event leading to the other. We even get a couple of suspenseful scenes of Asterix (competently) fighting without the aid of the magic potion and even Obelix gets a couple high stakes fights.

The animation is colorful and full of energy. There are LOADS of excellent jokes, quite a lot meant rather for the adults (e.g. The Pulp Fiction twist dancing is briefly referenced). It was truly the funniest thing I've seen in a while. Watching the big fight filled me with glee.

I think this was excellent. There still seem to be people capable of producing good Asterix content so I hope we will be getting more like it. Now go Watch it, increase the view count to let the producers know it is good and pretty please make an another!

This needs more recognize!

Wished more people acknowledged that this came out. Asterix and obelix is pretty famous in my country wich yeah is in europe but still.

I haven't read allot of the comics but i have watched a few of the films.

Both the two animated ones and a few of the live action films.

This one is connected to the two animated films wich i both really like.

This one is a mini series but i found to be wonderfully charming.

The animation is great and they also use allot of 2d elements aswell, i like the hero's aswell as villains. Im not going over the plot since its like 5 episodes that are each half an hour so i would be yapping endlessly.

True essence of Asterix

Loved every bit of it. It has the subtle humor, puns, relatable to current times and to top it of the last few seconds conversation between Chief Vitalstatistix and Impedimenta was the cherry on top.

The show creators expanded the story without loosing the essence of the original story. As an Asterix fan, I must say this was the best animation of Asterix so far (12 Tasks of Asterix was my previous favourite).

Animation, Sound design and background score was perfect. The dialogues are witty. A perfect show to watch with whole family.

Thank you Netflix and the whole team. A true tribute to Goscinny and Uderzo.

Sublime

Considering the time it's been since the last asterix and obelix 'movie' This came out of nowhere, But the animation and design from that movie has been stepped up a notch.

Smooth as butter, accurate to the comics with added modern day / retro music, updated name puns and it's all wrapped up in 20 ish min bites, effectively a 2 hour ish movie cut up in to 5 pieces.

Characters are as you'd expect with the classic antics each are known for with a bit of drama mixed in.

I'd say safe for kids unless you think tom and jerry is too violent ;)

voice acting ( for english at least) is on point, everyone feels invested in their character, no phone in's.

The Year Is 2025 AD. TV is entirely occupied by terrible Netflix series. Well, not entirely...

By complete coincidence our household watched this mere days after Mission Cleopatra, the only live action one that "gets it" and masterminded by comedian Alain Chabat, who also brings us Asterix's first proper TV series. Miraculously, this Netflix modern interpretation does also "get it" and is by turns playful, heartfelt and good fun. Not all of it is perfect and alongside the usual awkward mistranslations of French wordplay there also are some structural weak spots but the animation is sharp, the tone is consistent and the whole thing really does feel like a breath of fresh air in the long history of this particularly indomitable franchise. There's a real keen hope that we may see more of these and the completely brilliant bonus 2D "minisode" at the end of the whole thing is pure icing on the cake.

How GREAT is the new Asterix and Obelix mini-series on netflix?!

The new Asterix & Obelix: The Big Fight mini-series on Netflix is a real treat. It's a five-part animated adaptation of the classic comic, directed by Alain Chabat, what he's done with this series is genius!

This version stays true to the heart of the original while adding a fresh, modern touch. The humor is sharp, the animation is beautifully done, and the voice cast fits perfectly. The story follows Asterix and Obelix as they stand against the Roman forces, while their druid Getafix finds himself in trouble *no spoilers*. Naturally, chaos follows.

Watching this took me straight back to afternoons spent in the Hornsby library, pouring over Asterix comics, getting lost in their sharp wit and playful satire. Those stories always had a way of making the world seem a little brighter, balancing clever historical nods with lighthearted humor. No matter how many times I read them, they were a source of comfort and a guaranteed laugh.

This adaptation captures that timeless comic feel, and the jokes remain packed with satirical charm and modern pop culture references. Whether you're revisiting a childhood favorite or discovering Asterix for the first time, this is well worth a watch-Alain and Netflix have done a fantastic job bringing these characters to life!

If you haven't seen it yet, I've provided a direct link here: Asterix & Obelix: The Big Fight

Naturally, I think they've done a bangup job but these are just my thoughts but I'd love to hear what you think of the mini-series and if you think they should they bring out more. What do you think?

Similar to the 1989 film but with added bits

With 20+ other books yet to be adapted, or even completed, it's surprising that this (the first remake) was chosen to be the potential first of many series. There's some good satirical in-jokes similar to the books in both dialogue and character names. Wasn't a fan of the unnecessary and incorrect stuff in the first episode altering what all of us know from the books but newbies won't mind and it's nice to see the village in earlier times. Love the use of well known western songs in the soundtrack. The last episode is great and Netflix have definitely struck gold here. It's not as good as the last few animated films though but I'm excited and happy the untapped resource of the Asterix world has been recognised as missing until now, but let's get some of the books that haven't been adapted next please. And Netflix, if you're reading, 2000ad is also an untapped resource...

Great Retelling of The Big Fight

Asterix and The Big Fight is the second animated adaptation of the story of the same name & is the second Asterix series after the Dogmatix prequel series.

They added stuff that wasn't in the other version and I have to say, they are welcome additions to the story. Especially new character addition, Metadata. Also love how we discovered how Obelix cannot have any magic potion as the effect he gotten from it became permanent .Plus the big fight being a sporting event at the time period is very creative.

Netflix should be the official US distributor for future Asterix content in the mid future.

Not perfect - but definitely on the right track!

66 years after the first comic strip, 64 years after the first comic book, 58 years after the first movie, and 11 years after the first computer-animated film, our favorite little Gaul and his big, fat, strong friend (Obelix is now officially part of the title) are appearing for the first time in the form of a TV series (apart from "Idefix and the Indomitable"). And of course, it had to be Netflix, where else could it be?

The animations are based on the last two computer-animated films. It's quite good, although there's certainly room for improvement here and there, especially in the backgrounds. The plot is reminiscent in parts of the 1989 animated film "Asterix: The Menhir," and thus largely based on the album "The Battle of the Chieftains." Neither the film nor the album are among my favorites in the series, so I was a bit skeptical. That wasn't necessary. With its five parts, somewhere between 30 and 40 minutes, it was all about twice the length of a feature film. Giving it some time didn't hurt. Incorporating some elements from other albums, such as Majestix's liver upset from "The Averner Shield," was a sensible move. A few elements from the satellite town, for example, were also included, but without overpowering the other story. The authors had really put some thought into that.

Sometimes, the story was a bit too bluntly modernized, but ultimately, it was less so than in Uderzo's previous albums. Fortunately, Asterix has become significantly more "feminine," but again without bluntness, but in an appropriate form. The flashback to childhood ("When Obelix fell into the cauldron of magic potion") is also well-done, taking up almost the entire first episode and, thankfully, isn't an end in itself, but rather contributes to the plot. Not every gag works-but many do. Above all, some old running gags have been pleasantly modernized. A highlight is certainly when Getafix, in a daze, plays with his beard and turns it into a hand puppet. And the use of modern(er) music makes sense in many places and certainly supports the plot, which really surprised me.

It could definitely be better. There's still plenty of room for improvement. But this was already very good for a first attempt. After this miniseries, more are welcome.

A Disappointing Departure from the Classic

The 2025 Netflix animated series Asterix & Obelix: The Big Fight, directed by Alain Chabat, promised a fresh take on the beloved Gaulish duo created by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. While the animation is undeniably a highlight, the series stumbles badly in almost every other aspect, delivering a weak, overly modernized adaptation that feels disconnected from the spirit of the original comics. With lackluster dialogue and a heavily overhauled storyline that clumsily forces contemporary relevance, this miniseries is a letdown for fans and newcomers alike.

The animation, handled by TAT Productions, is the one saving grace. The vibrant, colorful CGI faithfully captures the comic's iconic art style, with fluid character movements and dynamic battle scenes that pop off the screen. The visual homage to Uderzo's sketchy artwork is a treat, and moments like the fluorescent bursts of magic potion effects add a modern flair without losing the source material's charm. For animation enthusiasts, it's a technical triumph-but sadly, it's not enough to carry the series.

Where the show falters most is in its dialogue, which lacks the sharp wit and clever puns that define Asterix's humor. The writing feels flat and uninspired, with none of the playful wordplay or satirical bite fans expect. Instead, the script leans heavily on lazy, anachronistic jokes and forced pop-culture references that feel like they're pandering to a modern audience rather than trusting the timeless humor of the original. Characters like Asterix and Obelix, usually brimming with personality, are reduced to delivering bland one-liners that fail to land.

The storyline, adapted from the 1964 comic The Battle of the Chieftains, has been so aggressively reimagined it barely resembles its source. The core premise-Getafix losing the magic potion recipe, leaving the Gauls vulnerable-remains, but the narrative is bloated with unnecessary modern additions. Subplots and characters feel shoehorned in to reflect current social and political themes, but these additions come off as heavy-handed and out of place in the whimsical world of 50 BC Gaul. The inclusion of contemporary issues, like subtle nods to modern politics (e.g., Caesar's Putin-esque portrayal), disrupts the story's flow and undermines the escapist charm that made the comics enduring. Even the childhood flashback episode, while visually engaging, feels like filler that detracts from the main plot.

Chabat's direction, while clearly passionate, can't salvage the misguided modernization. The pacing drags across the five episodes, with predictable plot beats that sap the energy from what should be a rollicking adventure. The voice cast, including Chabat as Asterix and Gilles Lellouche as Obelix, does their best, but the weak script gives them little to work with. The emotional beats, like the exploration of Asterix and Obelix's brotherhood, feel forced and lack the organic warmth of past adaptations.

In trying to update Asterix & Obelix for 2025, the series loses the heart and humor that made the comics timeless. The animation shines, but the weak dialogue and overzealous modernization make this a pale imitation of the Gauls' glory days. Fans of the comics may find it a nostalgic curiosity, but even they'll struggle to overlook its flaws. For a truer taste of Asterix, stick to the classic albums or earlier films like Mission Cleopatra.

Rating: 4/10 - Stunning visuals can't save a dull script and a story that tries too hard to be relevant.

Alain Chabat did it again!

As a French viewer from the generation lucky enough to get to watch 'Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra' in a cinema as a kid in 2002, and a forever fan of the Asterix comics I will be bias about how I view Alain Chabat's work. But no matter! This animated series is a touching tribute to Uderzo and Goscinny's beloved series and while 'Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra' was a very funny, situational comedy using a lot of absurd humour and modern references where Asterix and Obelix often seen standing in the back, are merely a pretext, here, we find the two characters' friendship at the forefront of the plot. The humour, pop-culture/political references are still there, mind you, but they are much more in accordance to the spirit of the comics, a real tribute to them with a real Alain Chabat-touch. The amount of work put into such a series may be a lot, it simply shows; yet I would love to see one more!

The best adaptation it could have

Astérix & Obélix : Le Combat des Chefs is a faithful adaptation to the first few Asterix & Obelix comics, so far with five episodes. It's really the best adaptation this franchise ever got; though the live action movies still have a place in my heart, they simply can't do the cartoony, exuberant slapstick that animation has.

As an absolute sign of respect, these aren't merely condensed into 10 or 20 minutes but a full half-hour like Invincible episodes, so these can probably be considered mini movies. The animation is indeed very similar to that of the A. Film animated movies; still wished it ws 2D, but beggars can't be choosers.

An absolute delight and strong recommendation.

Les combat des chefs - Tres bien

Amazing series. The entire comic series must be turned into many more series of visual treat. Very successful and excellent animation aesthetics as well.

It was like seeing those comics strips come to life and definitely was nostalgic to be taken down that lane. Some are drawing contemporary references, but for me, I don't want for a moment to leave those quintessential memories of imagining these characters come to life as we read these strips.

After Disney burned our memories with epstein and diddy association, I was looking for an oasis to salvage those innocent days and this strip delivers just that. Cannot wait for the next series to release. Cue: Please let it be ASAP.

Work Of Art

I watched Asterix & Obelix: The Fight of the Chiefs and I really enjoyed how the show brought these iconic characters to life. The animation is full of color, the humor stays true to the original comics, and the story is fun for both kids and adults. But I finished it wanting more.

We need new seasons that show the childhood of Asterix and Obelix. How did they meet? How did their friendship begin? What made them who they are today? Knowing their past would help us understand them better and connect with them in a deeper and more human way.

This series could become a modern classic if it explores more of their emotions, memories, and personal journeys - not just their adventures. It would also help future movies have more meaning, because we would know more about the hearts of these two heroes.

As a fan since I was a child, I ask: please continue this story! Give us more, with the same respect and love for the original that made Asterix and Obelix timeless.

Another joyous return to Gaul

As much as I rag on those who want more of the same (be they Star Wars geeks, Marvel geeks, or Human Centipede geeks), I'd be lying if I said I don't always get giddy when there's a new piece of Astérix media coming out. If it's animated, anyway (can't say I was too riveted by the recent live-action movie starring Zlatan Ibrahimovic -- yes, you read that right).

This new show looks at least as beautiful and high-energy as the remarkably cartoony 3D we got in the 2010s animated features (which were done by Mikros Image, the studio that would later do TMNT: Mutant Mayhem and The Captain Underpants Movie). Those films always moved more energetically -- and hilariously -- than we were used to seeing in 3D-animated worlds, and as I see it, it figures that these characters would one day get a Netflix show with the same high-speed animations plus the sorts of textures and stylistic flairs we've seen in the likes of Arcane, The Wild Robot, and the Spider-Verse films (albeit not as often here as I would've liked). Would 3D animation have been quite as fun as it is today without Mikros' work on the Astérix films?

Asterix & Obelix: The Big Fight supplies much of what any good Astérix story should have, including the slapstick battles, with superpowered Gauls pummeling lowly Roman troops with more energy than ever, and the punny names and wordplay -- some of them working in more modern references, e.g. Such characters as Centurion Fastanfurius and a Gaul named Tenmillionclix who changes his name into the more Roman-sounding Tenmillionvius. There are also Marvel references, which may sound eye-rolling but, I dunno, I snickered.

It's especially nice to see Astérix and friends look like their old comic-book and cartoon selves. That may not sound special, since the prior CG films also looked right, but considering what Disney did to their Seven Dwarfs when converting them to a 3D format for their Snow White remake, you never know.

I do have some notes: The show is very clearly based on an Astérix book that didn't even have enough story to fill a feature film (hence why the 1989 movie, which was also a lot more unhinged than this, worked in plot points from both The Big Fight and Asterix and the Soothsayer), ergo we get several dragged-out sequences that also aren't staged very excitingly.

Worst of all, we never see Redbeard and his crew get sunk while minding their own unrelated business. What kind of Astérix story doesn't have that?

Goscinny is smiling from heavens!

I grew up with Lucky Luke and Asterix and I can safely say that I owe my sense of humour to René Goscinny.

To me his witticism and writing is unparalleled.

Jokes in this series (especially the modernized ones) have captured the heart and soul of the deceased master and nothing is harder than modernizing a national treasure like Asterix!

I howled with laughter in most of the scenes. Never a dull moment.

Animation is wonderful and the voice actors are beyond belief! I don't care how good the voice actors in different languages but you have to see it in French. It hits extremely different, trust me.

It is amazing to see that the French are carrying their legacy with so much respect and masterfulness. Your work is appreciated all around the world.

Love and respect from a Turkish man.

Vive la France!

Inaccessible for photosensitive people

Was really excited to see this, but unfortunately the frame rate, flashes and lighting choices made this unwatchable. I had to leave the room and let the kids watch it by themselves which really sucked as I've been an Asterix fan since I was a kid and was looking forward to sharing this experience together, but it was not to be.

Really disappointed, as the quality was so great in every other way and it would have been a great TV show to watch without the flashiness, but these choices make it out of reach for photosensitive viewers. I'm sure it'll be great for hose who can watch it but it gets 1/10 for those with photosensitive disabilities.

Excellent, Hilarious, Good Story

As lovers of the original comics, but not having read them in years, and being acquainted with the terrible attempts at Asterix and Obelix film adaptations, this was an unexpected joy to watch as a family!

We range from 16-24 years and we loved this. We found the English dub to be hilarious. The accents selected were awesome and added to the humour and experience. The quick wit, attention to detail, consistency in story telling, and everything was so so loved. We couldn't stop watching.

If it weren't for a seemingly unnecessary character in the last three episodes (Apothexis), this would be a 10/10. The third episode was a bit of a filler and we found it to be a bit too modern and 'silly' which kind of broke the immersion in the world they had created. But, the rest of the show seemed to keep the 'silliness' to a level which was tolerable and well balanced with the geniuses humour and good plot.

Hoping for many more!

Best adaptation ever!

This is so true to the stories, and yet updated so nicely in the spirit of the originals. It was very clever, with a blend of old jokes, both wordplay and visual, from the original comics, and a nod to modern culture as well. It really took me back to my childhood of reading the books in the 70's, and made me giggle too. Wow! What a great feat, to be both nostalgic and relatable and relevant too. And it was nice to make it a mini series, as each episode was more punchy and focused, especially the opening scenes and titles. I hope Netflix signs off for more to be made; so much better than the live action movies.
