In the hands of a more talented filmmaker, this movie had the potential to become a new martial-arts classic. In Reiné’s, it’s the kind of thing that plays well as an evening’s diversion on Netflix, but doesn’t ever rise above the level of “just another good mid-tier actioner."

Fistful of Vengeance is a movie in duration only; it’s pretty slapdash in terms of its execution, even during its glossy-looking action set pieces.

The best action sequence comes at the end, which bolsters the film's best use of camera movement and editing to highlight the fight choreography.

Without tactical, philosophical or emotional grounding, the battle scenes don’t land with any cinematic force.

Leave this one to fans of the series, because as a stand-alone movie, it’s a dud.

It is glorious to see a predominantly Asian cast, including Asian-Americans, and extended scenes set against a gorgeous Thai backdrop. However, there’s little else to enjoy in this middling martial arts flick.
