Winner of the Golden Lion at the 78th edition of the world's oldest film festival, the Venice Film Festival. The award was selected by a jury led by Parasite director Bong Joon Ho, who would later cast lead actress Anamaria Vartolomei in Mickey 17 (2025).
Anamaria Vartolomei's first nude scenes.
Audrey Diwan chose to shoot the movie in the 1.37 ratio, so that the audience is always focused on the main character, and does not see her as an element of the frame but its center. It also enables the cameraman to follow closely Anne, so that the audience cannot see what will happen to her in advance and experiences her life at the same time as she does.
Writer/director Audrey Diwan first met author Annie Ernaux before adapting her book. She was stricken by the pain she was still feeling while recounting the events, and thought of that often while writing the script.
The film was shortlisted to represent France at the 2022 Academy Awards, but Titane (2021) was chosen instead.
