Temuera Morrison first appeared as Boba Fett's father, Jango Fett, in Star Wars: Episódio II - Ataque dos Clones (2002), and then as Commander Cody in Star Wars: Episódio III - A Vingança dos Sith (2005). In the 2004 DVD release of Star Wars: Episódio V - O Império Contra-Ataca (1980) (originally released in 1980), Morrison provided a voice-over for Boba Fett, who was originally played by Jeremy Bulloch and voiced by Jason Wingreen. Bulloch died on December 17, 2020, just a day before the season finale of The Mandalorian (2019) aired, which included the official announcement of The Book of Boba Fett.
Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian (2019)'s creator and showrunner, soon clarified that the series was its own series, separate from the third season of The Mandalorian. He explained that the spin-off was not announced by Kathleen Kennedy at the Investor Day event because they did not want to "spoil the surprise" of the reveal at the end of "Chapter 16: The Rescue".
In the first episode of The Book of Boba Fett, three real life Boston Dynamics "Spot" robots can be seen in the streets of Mos Espa, covered in a new exterior.
Boba Fett was 10 years old in Star Wars: Episódio II - Ataque dos Clones (2002). This series takes place 31 years later, around 5 years after Star Wars: Episódio VI - O Retorno de Jedi (1983), making him 41. This is the same age Temuera Morrison was when he played Jango Fett in Attack of the Clones. Morrison was 61 at the time of this show's release, making him 20 years older than the character he played, a noticeable difference that was not addressed in-story.
In Season 5, Episode 19 of Parks and Recreation, (2012-2013) Garth Blundin presents his idea for the 7th chapter of the Star Wars saga during his citizen filibuster. What he describes is very close to the opening of Episode 1 of The Book of Boba Fett. This was done on purpose, as confirmed in an interview by Payton Oswald, who played Blundin.
