The film is a prequel to the 2019 film The Wandering Earth, which is based on the short story of the same name by Liu Cixin, who serves as the film's producer.
The film also involves a lot of overseas footage. Due to COVID-19, the crew was inconvenienced to go abroad, so an overseas filming team was set up in four countries: the United States, France, Iceland and Colombia for location shooting. The creative team used live-streaming technology to transmit the overseas shooting images to the Qingdao shooting site for viewing in real time, so that the director could guide the foreign shooting work in real time while taking care of the domestic shooting. With the help of cloud data transmission technology, the material shot overseas can be uploaded and downloaded in real time through the cloud server platform in the form of small files and original filming files, which is convenient for domestic post-production.
The Wandering Earth II live-action studio area than the first 10 times larger, reaching 1 million square meters, equivalent to 126 soccer fields.
